Black Sails has been described as Game of Thrones with pirates

If Black Sails kicked off in 2020 instead of 2014, it certainly would have thrown fuel on the raging fire that was TikTok’s sea shanty obsession. The reality is that this TV series aired on Starz from 2014 for four seasons, coming to a close in 2017. So why is everyone talking about it now, a decade after it began?

Black Sails is coming to Netflix very soon, triggering its fans to emerge from the woodwork and promote the show online. ‘I am SO excited for people who’ll be watching this show for the first time,’ one user wrote, with many others recommending the series to fans of Game of Thrones. With House of the Dragon still a few months away, here’s why you should tune into Black Sails this month.

What Is Black Sails About?

Black Sails transports us back to 1715 – aka the Golden Age of Piracy. Set in New Providence, an island in the Bahamas, we meet the feared Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) who brings a new younger crew member into the fold (‘Long’ John Silver, played by Luke Arnold) as his crew continues to fight for survival and negotiate their space on the island.

Is Black Sails Based On A Book?

Black Sails was written as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island (1883).

Is It Based On A True Story?

While Black Sails isn’t based on a true story, it does trace real events. The first season focuses on the hunt for the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima, a real ship that sank in 1715 near Fort Pierce in Florida (where it still lies). Season two traces the fallout of Urca de Lima’s treasure being stranded in Florida, strictly guarded by Spanish soldiers while pirates prowl the shores. The subsequent third and fourth seasons then look at the war for the control of New Providence between the pirates and the British Empire – a la Pirates of the Caribbean.

Likewise, some of the characters are based on real people. Real pirates fictionalised in the show include:

Was Captain Flint A Real Pirate?

Captain Flint is a fictional character who was first created by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure Island. He has since appeared in multiple works of fiction, including A. D. Howden Smith’s Porto Bello Gold (1924), John Drake’s Flint and Silver (2008), Pieces of Eight (2009) and Skull and Bones (2010), and J. M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy (1904).

Where Was Black Sails Filmed?

Black Sails was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, mainly inside at Cape Town Film Studio. Because the real city is so different today than it was in the 1700s, Nassau – the capital of the Bahamas, located on New Providence island – was built from scratch in a studio over a period of four months, as were two large water tanks to house the series’ two ships. Some scenes were filmed outside in and around Cape Town when new terrain was required, but most of the series was filmed on set.

James Pleiades "Jim" Hawkins, also known as the "Rogue Warrior of Montressor", is the only son of Sarah Hawkins, the proprietor of the Benbow Inn, and one of the first off-world members of the Autobot Resistance. Jim is a very adventurous, rebellious, and caring young lad. At first, Jim is stoic and guarded, but as time goes on, he begins to open up, and in the end, he becomes a much more open, confident and happier young man, bearing a side that is very brave, selfless, strong-willed, independent, and loyal to his allies. He is also friendly and willing to help strangers, especially if they are injured or lost, showing that he's kind and compassionate towards animals. He is also shown to be fun-loving, a jokester, sarcastic, mischievous, charismatic, and a bit of a dreamer. He is also usually honest, yet quite private, and hardly ever lies; he only lies if he feels that he really has to, but can also be very sweet, innocent and polite, and cares greatly for his allies and will protect and defend them from anything and anyone. Jim is also very forgiving, shown when he forgave Silver for his antagonistic actions, particularly when Silver chose to save Jim's life instead of Flint's treasure, also allowing Silver to sneak away in lieu of outing him, showing that Jim has completely forgiven Silver and accepted him as his friend and father-figure again. Ultimately, even with his few flaws and his bad-boy exterior, Jim has got a heart of gold and refuses to embrace the typical greedy and ruthless pirate life like his pirate enemies. He's also very intelligent for a lad of his age (as in so intelligent that he is very skilled in mechanical engineering, showing this when he was able to build his own solar surfer all by himself at age 8 and he was able to fix up the late Captain Flint's spaceship in just a few minutes, come age 15). He is also pragmatic and logical, more than people give him credit for. Despite his great intelligence and pragmatism, he can do very stupid and reckless things, but regardless of his reckless side, Jim can be very cautious and serious if the situation presented itself. He likes playing around with Morph, but he can get annoyed by the little floating pink blob of mischief sometimes, and the same can be said for B.E.N., who gets on Jim's nerves fairly often, especially when B.E.N. talks too much or touches Jim too much. Nevertheless, Jim does consider B.E.N. a good friend and a useful sidekick (also, Jim learned to accept B.E.N.'s hysterical and annoying habits somewhat and even enthusiastically hugs B.E.N. back when B.E.N. hugs him for saving everyone from Treasure Planet's destruction). Divergence: After Jim saved everyone, they landed on another world: Cybertron. Dr. Doppler mentioned that most of the Cybertronians died out after the Earth War of 2006, but Jim always wanted to see it. They make planetfall, but Jim and Silver realize that they crossed into another reality, upon being fired at by the Decepticons. It wasn't until an unlikely alliance of characters brought Jim and the others to Nova-Terria, an amalgamation of worlds, using Montressor's technology to operate as computers, phones, everything. The others make themselves at home, with Jim using a Solar Surfer he created out of junked-out parts and a Crystallic Fusion Power-Cell, which he realized was just a giant battery. He often runs into a spot of trouble with the Decepticons, so much so that Team Epsilon, with Pursuit in command, saves him, but Jim does take some Decepticon tech and repurposing it for the Autobots, because he knows now: the war's still going on...and he's just been drafted into it, to save ALL realities. (Note: This is my sort of AU, and I'd not like anyone stealing ideas from me.)

Silver is braced for the transformation, and so he manages to maintain his composure, though when the pressure of fingers against his skull becomes the sharp flex of talons his knees go weak. Huge, bat-like wings erupt from Flint’s back, and horns sprout above his temples; by the time it's over, he has grown to at least half again his normal size. His face is still more or less his own, but his eyes are decidedly reptilian, and they watch Silver warily.

“Oh, hello,” Silver murmurs, soft and soothing, determined not to be ruled by his fear. “Aren’t you magnificent?”

Flint’s lips pull back to reveal sharp, gleaming teeth; he gives a warning growl.

“None of that now,” Silver says, holding his ground as he would with a skittish animal. “You aren’t going to frighten me away. Did you not think I knew what I was asking for?”

I mean there’s a whole video floating around on tumblr where OFMD fans call this man a terrorist LOL Does whatever it takes- literally whatever it takes- to push his agenda. Even if (in his opinion) it is overall for the good of the crew, he will cut anyone down to get there. Literally kills a man in a fist fight in the first episode. Had the worst sex I’ve ever seen on TV. Pushes Billy over board multiple times. Lies about the pig being cooked to save Silver from the crew.

look this man is destroying everyone around him including himself and is such a character. he's stringing along his fuck buddy into thinking that they can have something more together one day simply because he likes the attention, he's trying to sabotage his friend's first serious romantic relationship because he's obsessed with beating him in everything, he's manipulating his friend's new boyfriend into having sex with him for that same reason, he's trying to convince his other friend to sleep with the first friend because he knows the other friend has feelings for the first friend and he wants to get the first friend out of the way. it remains to be seen if he actually likes any of his friends or if they all just simply hang out together because they're all gay and met early on in college.

Flint looks up at the man from where he’s sat at his table with his crew members, his grip on his glass tightening at the piece of parchment in his hand. If looks could kill, Vane would be six feet under right now but the bastard is practically indestructible. A term used by many to describe Flint, as well. A fitting one, at that, considering all they’ve been through and survived. As have many others. Billy. Silver. Some even thought them immortal.

Far from it. They just knew how to fight and survive.

The voices quiet down after Vane challenges Flint, capturing the attention of almost everyone in the tavern, even those that have beautiful women seated on their laps. Because what could be better than witnessing THE rivalry between these two captains?

He downs the rest of the drink and slips out of his chair, standing straight as he keeps his eyes on Vane that continues to keep his distance. He’s waiting. Hoping Flint accepts his challenge, as made obvious by that annoying smirk on his goddamn face. “You seem to think I won’t succeed in taking it. Wouldn’t exactly be the first time, would it?” He taunts him in return before he makes his way towards the stairs. “How about we attempt to talk it over first like grown men? Think you can handle that, Charles?”

BANG.

Vane’s back roughly collides with the door, slamming it shut before Flint’s lips are on his without another word. He kisses him hard and deep, tongue demanding entry into the other’s man mouth and moaning when he finds his, tasting the mix of whiskey and cigar on his tongue. He holds him against the shut door, hands fisting his shirt and only letting go so they could sneak underneath, groaning when warm flesh meets the tips of his fingers. “This what you wanted me to take?” He questions after pulling his lips back, dropping his head, then, to attack his throat. Wouldn’t be the first time Vane challenged him in public like that, especially for this purpose. They had to keep the act up, after all, if they didn’t want this part of them exposed. Though they were allies, they still had their moments of rivalry. But behind closed doors? They fucked. They were intimate. Unbeknownst to everyone else which is how they wanted to keep it… for now.

Thus the room they were hiding in, across the tavern, doing far more than talking it over. Nothing of the sort, really. Not with Flint’s mouth kissing and biting at his throat and his hands sliding further up his chest, nails already leaving angry red marks to match the ones on his neck, though he spent no more than a second with each bite to ensure they would fade quickly. Disappointing, really, because the thought of Charles Vane walking back out there wearing bite marks of James Flint made him feel powerful. And oh, it turned him on so much more. Made evident in the way he presses against him with a growl, letting him feel the raging erection between his legs while feeling his own.

the more I read about Black Sails as a workplace comedy the more I like to imagine James ‘what does the crew think of me, Billy?’ Flint in a kind of undercover boss scenario. He shows up in a bad wig like “Hi, my name’s Clint, I’m a new carpenter’s mate. So anyway, what do you guys think of the captain?” and everyone knows it’s him and plays along except Muldoon who keeps insulting Flint to his face
