Why do the Cardians need blood? Is it a dietary preference or something else?

It's actually due to a mental condition that all Cardians have - without a single pint of blood in their systems, they start losing their minds.

It's a gradual process, at first there's not much of a change between the mentally unstable Cardian and a normal Cardian. However, like with all mental conditions, it takes time. And this 'bloodlust' usually happens within two weeks after the user stops taking blood.

Eventually, the bloodlust takes the memories of the Cardian, making them forget things that they said or done recently. Eventually it starts taking their memories of family - how to speak, how to function in society, and their friends and family. They become feral, unable to communicate, and so needy of blood that they wither away from lack of other nutrients.

Hemmo, surprisingly, is part of a generation of Cardians that do not suffer from this issue. He often goes for four weeks without drinking blood, and has to be reminded that he 'needs' it. Yet it seems more and more Cardians born don't need to drink as much, or as often as their older relatives. Is there something Lady Carossa's lying about?

The Cardians say that their planet, Cardia, was condemned due to lack of animal variety. However, it's this is knowledge from Lady Carossa herself, and she has lied to people in the past...
