I finally got around to reading 338. And though the chapter is mostly building towards whatever is going to happen next, I found it really enjoyable to read. 

The parallels that Asta can see between Hino and Clover are a wonderful way to introduce Asta to arguments such as “we’re not so different”, which I suspect could help with his relationship with Ichika (I mean “relationship” in the broaded meaning of the word). 

But also having someone without mana as the shogun is sure to give Asta a boost in spirit and motivation, because Ryu is a living proof of it being within his reach. 

Also, I’m going to assume that “Ryuya” is Ryu’s last name, because Ichika addresses him as “Lord Ryuya”, which would be, in the context more fitting to be “Lord [Last Name]” than the very familiarly intended “Captain Yami” (I say familiarly intended, because it’s been assumed that “Yami” was the first name, rather than last name). And similarly, Ichika is being addresses as “Lady Yami”. 

I’m also loving the fact that they’re using a word such as “yōjutsu” for magic in Hino, because it gives... a kind of a sense of realism, because all terms shouldn’t be universal. 

My biggest issue, honestly, is Asta being able to understand Hinoian. 

I understand that it’s far easier from a narrative point of view to just take this approach, but unless Tabs makes a claim such as “we put a spell on you as you were being transported, so that you can understand us”, him being able to understand Ryu and Ichika, doesn’t fly with me. And even if Asta was being put under a spell like that, they could still use different words (such as “yōjutsu”) for magic, because words don’t always translate, even if you could come up with a word to replace it with. There can be a lot of nuances lost in a translation. 

I do love Ichika though. She’s a little firecracker!

Chapter 338: Goodnight, Sweet Prince

Even though Helena's estate was only two minutes away, Michael managed to extend the trip significantly. Her company was intoxicating to him, and he intended to make it last as long as possible, though finally he had to deliver her home.

“Thank you for driving me home, Michael,” Helena said as the prince walked her up the steps to her front door. “It was nice to talk a little longer.”

“Yes, it was,” Michael said, stopping and turning to face her. “If you don’t think me too bold, I’d very much like to see you again.”

Helena looked down, hesitating, and Michael’s heart fell.

“I don’t know if that’s wise,” she said, softly.

Michael turned away, confused.

“But we were getting on so well,” he said. “Or at least I thought we were. Was I wrong?”

“No, we were … we are,” Helena said, sensing his hurt. “And I must say, I’ve grown quite fond of you, Michael. It’s just that – you being who you are ….”

Michael hung his head.

“Look, Michael,” Helena went on, “I’ve always been a very private person. But you and I both know that, were we to start seeing each other, I would soon find myself at the center of a media circus.”

“I can’t deny that,” he said, turning to face her. “And as much as I’d like to say the press would leave you alone if I asked, we both know that’s not true. But I would hope that the connection we both feel would make it worth the sacrifice.”

“Perhaps it would for most people,” Helena said, sadly. “But I have never had any desire to live in the spotlight. In fact, it is a place I find not only uncomfortable, but terrifying.”

Michael nodded and turned to leave. He’d made it down the first flight of stairs when he turned.

“Please, Helena, at least promise me you’ll consider it,” he said. “The press doesn’t seem to know I’m here, so until I return to Weston, we have time to explore things … get to know one another better. Don’t you think we owe it to ourselves to at least give it a chance?”

Helena looked down at Michael’s face and softened.

“Very well, then,” she said. "We'll give it a chance."

Okay, I love this little combo move that they can perform together now. Even if it did totally wreck both of them. Life and Death Companions indeed.

I was a bit worried that Joonghyuk, who's already felt pretty useless multiple times in the past compared to Dokja, was going to feel even more useless if Dokja could just use his new story to be him whenever he felt like it, and I love that instead we see Dokja not trying to be the protagonist like he was reprimanded for by the Fourth Wall (in fact Dokja himself actually specifically says "as always, the protagonist was the last to attack" before leaving things to Joonghyuk) but instead the reader who's able to bridge all of the protagonist's different tales.

And, speaking of which, it's interesting that the Joonghyuks inside of the story (inside of Dokja in a way) are almost sentient? Like it mentions some of them being envious and others gloomy and finally they find one who appears interested. I took that to mean that particular Joonghyuk was interested in helping them. Like, that version was able to chose? idk

Either way, the fact those Joonghyuks could see them and understand what was going on in their story is another thing that seems to be showing that the stories themselves are alive (and often sentient to some degree). Which is cool in general, but also makes me think of the Fourth Wall, which may or may not literally be the sentient form of TWSA. Or at least "the largest fragment" of TWSA?
