Williamson Mound Archeological District
U.S. Route 42
Maud, OH
The Williamson Mound Archeological District is an archaeological site in the southwestern part of the state of Ohio. Located east of U.S. Route 42 on the western edge of the Wetherington Golf and Country Club north of Maud, OH, in West Chester Township, Butler County, the mound appears to have been the work of peoples of the Hopewell tradition. Although a small hole was dug into the top of the Williamson Mound at some point before 1972, the mound remains in premium condition. It sits atop a ridgeline above an intermittent stream in a rural part of increasingly urbanized Butler County. As one of the best preserved Hopewell mounds in its region, the Williamson Mound is potentially a significant archaeological site. For this reason, it was listed with the National Register of Historic Places in May 29, 1975.

A Morning Hike At Hopewell Lake In French Creek State Park
A Morning Hike At Hopewell Lake In French Creek State Park
I  awoke early on Friday during my stay at the historic  Inn at St. Peters Village in Chester County. And, after a cup of coffee, I  decided to hike around  Hopewell Lake in nearby French Creek State Park. After a  10 minute drive through beautiful farm country I arrived at the lake shortly after sunrise.  The rising sun  and some high cirrus clouds created a spectacular scene over Hopewell Lake.…

Chessie
Sea serpents-large reptilian creatures that surface briefly then disappear back into the deep-have been reported off the coast of Virginia for centuries. However, of late, attention has been focused on a serpentlike creature in the Chesapeake Bay named Chessie.
Reports of a large snakelike animal seen in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries made the news in the late 1960s. Then in 1978, a retired CIA employee, Donald Kyker, reported seeing four Chessies about seventy-five yards offshore. His neighbors, the Smoots, also saw the creatures. In 1980, no fewer than four charter boats-carrying twenty-five-people-observed Chessie. All witnesses generally agree that the creature appears to be twenty-five to forty feet long, a little less than a foot across, dark, with no limbs, fins, or distinguishing details on its oval head.
Chessie, whatever it is, seems to get around. In March 1980, a Richmond resident saw it in the Appomattox River near Hopewell, which is farther inland than previously reported. The woman had gone to Hopewell with her husband for dinner at the Harbor Light Restaurant, beside the river.
In a letter to a Richmond newspaper she wrote, “I got out of my car and looked up the Appomattox River. . . . Something caught my eye. . . .We watched as it got nearer. . . .It had a . . . long, undulating body.” She added that she had not said anything, “for for of being ridiculed.”
She said the creature was “the most fascinating thing I ever saw.” It had a dark, snakelike body with a reptilian head that matched those from sightings near the bay.
On May 31, 1982, an opportunity came to document these strange sightings. Around 7:30 p.m. that night, Robert and Karen Frew saw one of the animals in a bay at Love Point, near the mouth of the Chester River. Grabbing his videotape camera, Frew taped the long, dark, serpentine form swimming just a hundred feet away. The creature was seen cruising along toward a group of swimmers, before diving beneath them and reappearing on the other side of the swimmers. The two minutes of videotape clearly showed an animate object.
Soon after, Michael Frizzell and the Enigma Project became involved in investigating and documenting reports of the Chesapeake Bay sightings of Chessie. On August 20, 1982, the Enigma Project was able to get the Frew videotape for an audience with George Zug and other scientists at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History.
“After thoroughly examining the tape,” Frizzell reported, “the scientists, although intrigued by what it apparently depicted, were unable to reach any conclusions about the ‘inanimate’ object shown. The videotape’s quality was simply not good enough to allow such a determination.”
Then in 1994 and 1995, to totally confuse the picture, a male manatee that had wandered far from Florida was positively identified as it traversed the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. What did the authorities decide to name it? Chessie, unfortunately. The manatee was outfitted with a tracking device, and as its seasonal movements into northern waters were confirmed, reports of the bay’s mysterious serpent-the original Chessie-dramatically diminished in frequency.
Could some of the original Chessie cryptid sightings be of out-of-place manatees? Of course they could; but the manatee, a gentle, aquatic mammal eight to fourteen feet long, looks like an overweight seal, not a thin, serpentine creature.
