My condolences and thoughts are with Chris Gauthier's family at the moment after he passed away on Friday aged only 48.

The signed photograph above was a present for an interview I did about his life from being born in my hometown to becoming an actor in Canada. We exchanged a lot of emails, and Chris was the most jovial, bizarrely humoured, genuinely nice guy.

I even met his mother and had the pleasure of her visiting for tea. She was incredibly proud of all her sons, and my thoughts are with her, his wife and children & all those who knew Chris & our mourning his loss.

In 2017, the best moment of this game was when Chris’s son got a goal and Chris, who was on the sidelines, turned to the audience and yelled “THAT’S MY BOY!!!!”. It was just wonderful, real and I loved it. He His personality was big, gregarious and fun. He was friendly to the fans both in person and online. He was passionate about things he loved and what he believed in, and spoke his mind. He definitely loved his family and my heart breaks for them. Chris will definitely be missed.

In my opinion, Mr Smee is one of those characters that has a perfect casting record. Every actor who's played him has been entertaining to watch, while also putting their own spin on this classic character.

And that was certainly the case with Chris Gauthier in Once Upon a Time.

Like most characters, this version of Mr. Smee did start out quite different to how we're used to seeing him, but he was still recognizable as our dear Smee. Warm, funny, morally grey, quite a bit anxious but very loyal to his captain. It was always great to see Smee come back periodically over the series.

It's very sad to hear news of Chris Gauthier's passing. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. But thank you, Chris, for being our Mr Smee. It was a pleasure to see you in this role.

Chris Gauthier (January 27, 1976 – February 23, 2024) Actor best known for his roles as Neville in Need for Speed: Carbon and William Smee in Once Upon a Time.

Gauthier had a recurring role on the SyFy Channel series Eureka, as Café Diem owner Vincent. While filming the final ten episodes of season three of Eureka, he also filmed the 2009 CBS Mystery Event Harper's Island, in which he appears as Malcolm Ross, and in Freddy vs. Jason as Shack. His biggest claim to fame was in Smallville as Winslow Schott aka Toyman. He battled both Clark and Oliver, as well as set up Marionette Ventures aka The Legion of Doom. (Wikipedia)

This one hurts. Chris was one of the kindest and sweetest people. Especially to the fans he met at cons. He was so friendly and his personality was larger than life. I always loved seeing him. He hung out with fans, and was just a normal guy. He was passionate about what he believed in on Twitter, and didn’t hold back. I appreciate him as a person, actor, and family man. He will definitely be missed.

I love my photo ops with him, and the one I don’t have a digital for is the one that is my favorite of all the con photos I have ever taken (like how I look). And finally when he was signing my embroidery he didn’t want to “ruin it” by drawing the face he does in signatures, and I begged him to treat it like how he normally signs things, thankful I did. Because now I have a piece of him that I can treasure from the years of seeing him at Once Upon a Time cons.

I am sending love to his family and friends during this time. He was definitely cherished among the fans of Once, and he had an impact on us all. May he rest in peace 💜.
