Specialist species such as the Pallas’ cat manage prey populations in their habitat. They can also be ideal indicators of ecosystem health, according to research.

Small cats face big threats: Reasons to save these elusive endangered species

The fishing cat is a wetland specialist but also shows adaptability. Researchers in Sri Lanka have studied a population living in Colombo’s urban area for several years. Making such specialist species the face of at-risk habitats could bring wider conservation benefits, experts suggest.

Efforts are underway to understand if the Northern tiger cat should be split into distinct species. In Colombia, Juan Camilo Cepeda Duque, of the Andean Tiger Cat Conservation Alliance, describes the local species (known as the Andean tiger cat) as a “free colleague” for farmers living in the vicinity of forests because the animal helps control pests.

Panthera, an NGO, is researching how bobcats regulate mountain beaver populations in Washington state, U.S. It could be the case that foresters can greatly benefit from having these cats around, says researcher Wai-Ming Wong. But data remain scant: Only one ecosystem services study has been conducted on the species.

Meet the sand cat (Felis margarita). This small, solitary feline inhabits arid regions—including Africa’s Sahara Desert and parts of Asia. Built for desert life, the thick soles of this cat’s paws allow it to walk on scorching sand during the day and cold sand at night. In parts of its range, daytime temperatures can soar up to 124° Fahrenheit (51° C) and then plummet to 31° Fahrenheit (-0.5° C) by night. The sand cat is also a “fearless snake hunter” known to pursue snakes (even venomous vipers) for a meal.

The fishing cat.
Known for its ability to catch fish, it also quacks like a duck. Loss of its wetland habitat is a principal threat. Because it frequents human-dominated landscapes, including urban areas like Colombo, Sri Lanka, retaliatory killings, or roadkill are other common threats. Pollution of waterways and climate change also put the species in peril.

Monday mood? The rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus). Known as the “hummingbird of cats,” this species is one of the world’s smallest felines, reaching weights of only 3.5 lbs (1.6 kg). Primarily nocturnal, this cat uses its large eyes to hunt under the cover of darkness. It can be spotted in parts of Southeast Asia including India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. Creature Awaits #211
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Tumblr media
(Another awesome photograph from the talented Cloudtail the Snow Leopard, (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0))
The Bush Dog
Scientific Name: Speothos venaticus
Region: Primarily northern South America reaching up a bit into Central America
Size: About 22"-30" long (~57cm-75cm) with a roughly 5"-6" (~12.5cm-15cm) tail
Interesting Notes: These adorable wild dogs live and hunt in packs, feeding on various mammals and birds, even large ones such as rheas, capybaras, and peccaries. Their packs revolve around a primary pair surrounded by their closest relatives. The primary pair breed and the other members help take care of the pair's young.
