I was rewatching the download and saw how Cluebert is the angel on the tree lol
Okay they talk about it in the commentary but the special light on Cluebert during Role of a Lifetime, the fact that Scrags' dad gave him Cluebert as a substitute companion, and the use of the phrase "Paw-Paw," like animal paws, is just... woof. That's like thirty essays on Scrags right there.

What if the members of the Solve-It Squad didn’t go their separate ways after Cluebert’s murder? What if they held onto each other? And miracle of miracles, actually got therapy? To escape from the pain and cynicism of canon, I present to you We Got Some Work to Do Now, an AU where Mayberry’s kid detectives don’t grow up to be quite as fucked up.

Want an actually good (and good natured) adult parody of Scooby Doo?
Try “The Solve It Squad Returns” a stage play about a gang of former teenage sleuths reuniting to solve the case that got away…
I believe they also produced a sequel over zoom during lockdown, but I haven’t watched it yet.

ok ok ok
new crack ship
Scrags x Curt Mega
hear me out!
This is almost entirely based on two facts: 1. Spies are Forever and The Solve it Squad exist in the same universe 2. Scrags and Owen Carvour are both played by Joey Richter.
But also, they have both lost someone close to them and deserve somebody who helps them heal from the trauma.
Now imagine the following scenario:
One of the Solve it Squad's mysteries happens to be related to the same organisation/person/something, as one of Chrt's missions. They don't immediately run into each other and whem their paths eventually cross, they don't interact, the squad just runs past Curt or the other way around. But when Curt sees them more specifically when he sees Scrags- of course, he instantly recognises his face. Curt doesn't understand. Owen? Did he somehow survive their last encounter? Did he trick Curt and only faked his death? Is he secretly behind whatever mission Curt is currently on?
Curt starts investigating and makes contact with the squad. They work together to solve both their mystery and Curt's mission. At first, Curt only treats this alliance as a way to get behind what's up with Scrags and him looking like Owen, which is why he makes sure to spend a lot of time with him. He realises pretty quickly that Scrags can't be Owen, but he stays with the squad until the end of the investigation because even if he won't admit it, he enjoys their company - especially Scrags' of course.
Curt is pretty annoyed by the squad's inability to stay focused on the mission and how unprofessional they act, but he actually fits in with their chaos quite well, and once he gets used to it, this less strict environment takes off some of the pressure from him. Meanwhile, Scrags really appreciates working with someone who actually takes their job seriously for once. (Scrag's history with the fbi plays into this somehow)
Of course, they end up bonding over their shared trauma of loosing the person/dog closest to them and forming this close relationship with somebody who really understands their pain helps them to fill the holes Owen/Cluebert have left.
The long game would not be for Curt to join the solve it squad, but rather to become a recurring character. The solve it squad just occasionally collaborates with Scrag's spy boyfriend now.

Recently watched 'The Solve It Squad' with a friend of mine and this was basically how he found it:
Was so surprised by the dirty jokes
"Wait... How old are they?"
Gagged by the fact they're middle schoolers
"I hope Cluebert dies" *Cluebert dies* "Wait what"
Very shocked about the squad breaking up because of it. "Cluebert was a Scrags thing, obviously. So why would any of the other team be affected?"
Laughed at the fact Scrags voice was so high pitched despite him being in his 30s
Had to explain to him that when Scrags and Keith put their arms up, they're resting their arms on the van. "Oh.. weird."
"GWEN HAS A HUSBAND AND KIDS?"
So disgusted by Gwen's reaction to Keith. "Bruh you have a HUSBAND."
"Wtf is Esther a druggie?" "OMG SHE'S DOING HEROIN."
This man really didn't like Keith and Gwen's relationship.
Lost his mind at the part about the hotel being covered in jizz.
*Nod your heads like you speak English!* "YOOOOOOOOOO" He loved Scrags after that, supporting the voice of reason.
Kept laughing at Brian playing so many different characters
By this point, he thought Esther was hilarious
"Why are Esther and Keith in the gym?" "Looking for clues." "Ya, I know. But it's such a weird pairing." Obvs he didn't want her hanging around him. BECAUSE I CAN NOT EMPHASIS HOW MUCH THIS MAN HATED KEITH.
Made an announcement he likes Esther after she leaned on Scrag's shoulder to encourage him to do the sandwich trick.
Dead silent during the sandwich trick. Like, watching in silent awe and confusion.
"DAMMNNN" When Scrags yelled at Gwen and Keith. Mans was cheering him on.
When Keith got kidnapped, he admitted he had no clue who the killer could be.
He really didn't want Scrags to feel bad after yelling at Gwen and Keith. "STICK TO IT. YOU'RE RIGHT."
"WHAT THE HELL AM I WATCHING?" During the big chase scene.
Biggest eye roll when Gwen stepped forward and said she felt like the odd one. "Oh SHUT UP."
In the end, he said he hoped Scrag's wouldn't return to the squad cause he's the only normal one.
He enjoyed it tho and seemed a little interested when we watched the Grunch trailer.

Ohhh I love a character study, and I LOVE Keith and Scrags, so... Let's call this one fair game!
Tumblr media
“Please… Just leave me alone.”
Those five words caused the start of everything. When the last of the footsteps faded off into the distance, leaving him with the slowly growing patch of mud on his knees, that was just the start. Benji Scragtowski- awkward, sensitive Benji- had just been left alone. Without his best friend, or any of his friends, for that matter. When he asked, they gave him space, but he never asked for them back, and so they never came.
He was fourteen, at the time. They were already in high school. At this point, everyone already had their friendship groups. That’s why he spent a good portion of the remaining half of the year completely alone.
Keith would talk to anyone, and because he managed to insert himself into that many social situations just by being himself, he had good, solid friends in a matter of days. Gwen had never had a problem, not even when it was just the four of them. She had a whole network of fallback options, and within a few weeks, it was like she’d never had a part in the squad at all. Esther had appeared to get used to their life alone, but even they ended up with a small clique of their own after a few months.
But Scrags should’ve seen this coming. He was a loner before the squad, it seemed only right that he would continue to be a loner after they broke up. At least Esther was kind enough to acknowledge his presence once in a while. That was something.
He finished that year still reeling about what had happened. In the space of what was really only a few hours, he’d literally lost everything he’d built up over years. The four of them were supposed to be cool together, at least until the natural end of it all, when they weren’t kids anymore. The problem with that was that they still were. So the ending wasn’t natural, no matter how much the others wanted to pretend like it was. Sometimes, his mother would ask him how his friends were. He didn’t have the heart to tell her they all disappeared when Cluebert did.
All he had left of the life he used to have was the element of mystery. It’s what kept things exciting, knowing that there was so much out there that he just couldn’t understand, it still intrigued him as much as it always had. Even if he’d lost a bit of the spark for it, and most of his entire motive for pursuing it had gone, there was still nothing that interested him more.
That notion carried him all the way through high school, when he decided that, if that was really something he was serious about, then he may as well make a career out of it. And he really wanted to continue this dip into that kind of life as much as he could.
The criminal justice course he’d chosen out in the middle of nowhere wasn’t quite the excitement he’d promised himself, but the day he got accepted into the FBI made all of that a little more worth it.
He was twenty-three. Benji Scragtowski- studious, hard-working Benji- finally had prospects, a real job, and a chance at being happy again.
What he still didn’t have was a best friend. Connections, sure, and people he would consider “friends” in varying degrees of the word, but nothing concrete. He had to let go of the past at some point, but that was an impossible ask for someone like him.

Keith had never been particularly observant by any means, but he found himself guiltily watching Scrags after the squad broke up. He was the last to leave him behind, sparing enough glances behind him to tell him he really didn’t want to let this thing go. Part of him wanted Scrags to catch his eye, but the opportunity came and went, and Scrags didn’t look at him once.
He thought he had three people he could confide in about the rather catastrophic death of Cluebert, but the truth of the matter was that Keith had been a coward. He’d never mentioned the fact that he didn’t actually care whether Cluebert was alive or not.
When everyone left, he was fifteen. Keith Swanson- brash, overconfident Keith- Had managed to wreck everything he had and couldn’t even admit to his mistakes. There had never been more of a worse friend in the history of the world.
After beating himself up over that for a while, he decided that the best course of action was just to distance himself as much as possible, and hopefully the feeling would go away. That, or Scrags’ grief would fade out enough that the two of them could reconnect, without having to bring those old scars back to the surface.
That never happened.
By the end of sophomore year, he’d been accepted into a small network of people, but none of them were really close friend material. Not as much as Scrags had been, anyway. Besides his crush on Gwen that lasted him throughout the entire duration of the squad itself, he’d always been the closest to Scrags. The two of them were on a certain level that he just couldn’t reach with the others, and that brought them closer.
At least, in his eyes.
Maybe that wasn’t the case for Scrags… After all, he’d not chosen to make a move to salvage the friendship they had. Neither of them did. And Keith had to be honest with himself, it probably looked like he’d moved on way too much. Like he’d gotten way too comfortable with this new life. Like he’d let go.
It got to the point where the only time he saw him was in passing periods. He’d grown up a lot, seemingly different every time Keith saw him. In only a year, Scrags became a completely changed person. Way taller, way more reserved… Keith couldn’t help but wonder whether things would’ve been a little different if they had stayed together.
One thing he was admittedly happy to let go of was the whole mystery shtick the four of them had going on. He could never get his head around it, it was always just a matter of getting things done and moving onto the next thing. For him, that was always how things had been, a constant need to move on to the next thing.
He wasn’t going to college, he’d decided that a long time ago, but he started overhearing more and more people talking about their options. All he knew for certain was that he needed to get out of Mayberry.
“Hey Keith, you were friends with that guy Scragtowski, weren’t you?”
Keith nodded, sure of that much at least. People talking about their options and where they were going from high school had made him feel a little uneasy for reasons completely unknown to him, but the mention of Scrags did nothing but make that feeling worse. “Sure. Why?”
“Heard he’s going to do some criminal course or whatever, all the way out in Boston!”
Boston?
Keith felt his face fall. If Scrags was all the way out in Boston, then there was never going to be another chance to speak to him, to try and make things right.
And there never was.
Years passed, and Keith’s plan of not knowing what he was doing paid off just fine. It was perfectly normal for a twenty-four year old man to have no kind of future, or friends, or any kind of life... Right?
... Right?

Thinking about how Solve It Squad Returns is all about Scrags learning to become his own Cluebert, and How the Grunch Cribbed Christmas is all about him learning to become his own dad. And, like, that's good. It's good that he's healing and surrounded by people who inspire him to do so. It's great that he's learning to fill and plaster all the gaping holes in his life. Again and again and again.
It just really sucks that he has to.

I’ve been on a binge all yesterday and today. Just watched Solve It Squad, How the Grunch Cribbed Christmas, Holy Musical B@man! and Me and My Dick all for the first time. And I’m dropping my short reviews:
SIS/HTGCC are definitely worth the watch, tons of fun. I feel the need to put Scrags in a jar and shake him around a little bit. Depressed sad little man. (The way my jaw dropped when he explained how Cluebert was a replacement for his absent father HELLO 😭) Esther is great, their whole fucking with Christmas song was great. I thought the drug thing would get old but they find so many ways to keep it interesting. Keith is silly as fuck you go king I hope you get laid one day but please move on from Gwen girlie🙏 And uhh I don’t remember a thing about Gwen whoopsies. I’m working my way through the livestream episodes right now, I adore how cartoony it all is.
HMB! I probably have to rewatch I was multitasking. But whatever tf Batman and Superman had going on was great. Loved the way Batman and Robin were more of a brothers dynamic than father-son. I am once again amazed by how Joe feels so different in every role. Jeff fucking killed it he was made to be a joker-type beat mf. (tbf I tend to like Jeff a lot I think he’s great). But yeah this was fun. Will probably watch again eventually.
I cannot tell you wtf happened in MAMD but uh????? I am… once again amazed by how Joe feels so different in every role. The whole show was weirdly charming? I was expecting to enjoy the more crass humor since that’s just how I am but yeah the whole story was more captivating than I expected?? I very much enjoyed it. By far the funniest joke was the main guy just being named Joey Richter 😭 one big bullying session fr fr the Heart really went for his ass with his line about the jaw. …Yknow if I had a nickel for every time Joe and Joey played different parts of the same character I’d have two nickels???? Which really isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
With this, I believe the only Starkid/TCB musicals I haven’t seen (not counting side shows or things not staged) are A Very Potter Senior Year and ANI. I’m happy to talk about any other show if anyone would like to discuss but I’m expecting this post to be lost to the void lmfao I just needed to get my thoughts out!

"a dad can get you a dog to be there for you when he's not around... Leaving you with no one after that dog is... gone..." This really does put Clueberts death into more perspective and make it more tragic. Scrags dad wasn't around and wasn't there for him. His dog died. And everyone in the Squad left and went their separate ways. He was so completely alone. He had no one to comfort him about his dog dying. He had no one to comfort him about all his friends leaving. He had no one there for him.
