Ol’ Blue Eyes

Increased availability of DNA testing isn’t just helping humankind, it’s also shedding light on the genetic secrets of our canine best friends. A company carrying out consumer DNA testing on more than 6,000 dogs has discovered the genetic variation responsible for giving Siberian Huskies their piercing blue eyes. Intriguingly, the Husky’s blue peepers aren’t due to genetic alterations that have been found in other blue-eyed breeds. Instead, they’re caused by a small duplicated section of DNA close to a gene called ALX4, which plays an important role in eye development in many mammalian species. Carrying just one copy of the duplicated version is enough to cause completely blue eyes or heterochromia (a blue and a brown eye). Although you don’t need a gene test to reveal what colour your pup’s eyes are, the discovery helps to explain the underlying processes of eye development in dogs and maybe their owners as well.

Thinking about the Sergio 7 I am reminded of all the organizations that stood beside us in order to see these boys and girls thrive. In the end, Sergio lost his life to both cancer and a broken heart but we all did our part in teaching him about compassion, understanding and while he taught all of us different things, it was my hispanic heritage that brought us together, helped him to see things differently and opened my eyes to reasons my own father did things the way he did.

Sergio wasn't perfect, it took years of homelessness to beat his addictions and for that I am thankful. My only sadness came from his dying alone in that hospital but that's overshadowed by the joyous relief that his dogs were able to be placed in forever homes. We will think of Sergio and the Sergio 7 often and hope that we impacted their lives as much as they impacted ours.

He’s another chimera/Inquest DNA experiment similar to 9730. Where 9730 is mostly jotun with some canine & saurian influence, Subject 0000-N (“Null”) is mostly ogre and smogscale. A lot less care & attention was invested in Null from the start since the Inquest had to basically re-learn how to do the process at all (due to CoE meltdown & the death of the author). Null wound up being the first success in a long string of failures since 9730′s creation.

Null’s not very similar to 9730 past that, though. Where 9730 learned to turn his fear into aggression, Null’s fear turned into submission.

He’s generally what I call “a good boy who does bad things” & for the most part it’s true. He’s naturally very calm and amiable, but exposure & tampering from the Inquest has turned him skittish & compliant for the most part. He does as he’s told; as much as he hates to do it, he’s far more terrified of defying orders.

Did I ever tell you guys about the English town, Chideock? Okay, so Dorset, Devon and Somerset are historically Protestant/CoE counties but there’s a tiny little village in Dorset called Chideock (pronounced Chid-duck. You say it fast) that is historically Catholic. There’s a sweet little Catholic Church there that still has it’s 17th century bells. There are little Catholic affirmations engraved all over the bells: one of the affirmations simply says “Love God.” Except, whoever engraved it was clearly semi-illiterate because instead, it says “Love Dog.” A Catholic Church that tells us to love our divine little canine companions. Iconic.
