GALIBIER CHALLENGE

A St-Michel de Maurienne, le 5 juin 2022

2eme édition pour cette cyclosportive et découverte pour moi ! L’épreuve a pour particularité d’offrir une arrivée au sommet du col du Galibier quelques jours seulement après son ouverture à la suite des dernières opérations de déneigement de la partie sommitale. L’évènement se déroule sur 2 jours avec 2 parcours gravel le samedi, le dimanche voyant proposer la grimpée sèche Télégraphe + Galibier et la cyclosportive comportant 115km et 3350m D+, le chrono s’arrêtant donc au sommet du Géant des Alpes pour un retour en descente tranquille jusqu’à St-Michel de Maurienne.

Très hésitant sur ma participation avec des prévisions météo très pessimistes pour le week-end, ce n’est qu’au dernier moment (jeudi soir) que je prends mon dossard voyant ces dites conditions s’améliorer avec notamment un dimanche matin qui devrait rester beau ! Et à 8h45 à St-Michel-de-Maurienne pour le départ il fait effectivement un temps estival, presque chaud et ensoleillé ! Peu avant j’aperçois quelques-uns de mes camarades de routes : Nicolas Ougier, Julien Sauvigné, Julien Gaillard, Jean Luc Chavanon ou Alexandre Lavocat avec qui je discute entre ligérien !

Après un départ neutralisé pour sortir du centre-ville, je suis en 1ere ligne et 2 coureurs du team RCS assurent un bon tempo sur le faux plat menant à la première difficulté. Peu avant j’accompagne une 1ere offensive sans conséquence et nous abordons la montée de la Fusine (les 3 derniers km à 6%) : déjà sur un gros tempo, Julien S. met une bonne attaque : bien placé j’y vais sans réfléchir imité par Nicolas et un 4eme homme. Après quelques instants, je me retourne et surprise nous avons fais le trou à 4 ! Nico et Julien sont très actifs, je tente un ou 2 relais mais trouve le rythme bien soutenu. Dans la descente d’Orelle un 5eme homme nous rejoint et de retour sur la D1006 les relais s’organisent immédiatement pour foncer sur St-Michel ; c’est full gaz jusqu’au pied de la 2eme difficulté : le col de Beau-Plan (11,2km à 6,3%).

Peu avant le pied on aperçoit un contre qui semble se rapprocher mais on entame ce col ente gros tempo et seuil ce qui fait que ça ne rentre pas. Avec des passages à 5w/kg voir plus, un gars lâche prise et nous voilà 4 mais pour peu de temps : on fait l’essentiel du travail avec Julien et on finit par s’isoler : tous les 2 avec un niveau très proche l’un de l’autre on sait qu’on peu aller loin et on collabore sans rechigner. On fait alors une bien belle montée sur ce col méconnu et très calme (pas vu une voiture !). Un « replat » vers Beaune permet de souffler avant un dernier km plus difficile et c’est parti pour la descente que j’ai vu très technique en consultant le parcours. Je laisse Julien faire le guide, c’est propre, sans risque et sans perte de temps ; nous voilà de nouveau à St-Michel-de-Maurienne où je peux récupérer un bidon auprès de mes parents et nous comptons 4’ d’avance sur un groupe d’une quinzaine de gars (avec 2-3 coureurs intercalés).

Reste alors 35km, pas les plus simples avec tout d’abord le col du Télégraphe (12km à 6.8%). On continue de bien rouler avec Julien même si mon camarade n’est pas à 100% avec notamment des douleurs au dos. Du coup c’est moi qui fais de plus en plus le train au fil du col : en gestion 320-325W ; je m’étais fixé de tenir 300W sur ces 35 derniers km (descente Valloire comprise). On n’est donc pas mal et on nous annonce 3’40 d’avance à l’approche du sommet. On a alors environ 5km facile jusqu’à Valloire où on se ravitaille et souffle un peu ; malgré la faible circulation 6-7 voitures font barrages avant l’entrée de la station mais motos et voiture ouvreuses toutes sirènes dehors nous dégagent le passage ! La pente reprend ses droits pour le col du Galibier (18km à 6.6%).

Dès la rampe des Verneys je tente de repartir sur 5w/kg (alors que la puissance moyenne est retombée à 294W depuis St-Michel), relâchant un peu car ça devient compliqué pour Julien et on a encore intérêt à rester à 2 pour les faux plats qui suivent. Très volontaire Julien me relais en direction de Bonnenuit où la pente reprend : de nouveau je tente de reprendre mon rythme entre 300-320W et Julien lâche prise ; il reste 13km ! Les longs bouts droits jusqu’à Plan Lachat ne passent pas si mal même si une certaine lassitude me gagne ; je profite d’un dernier passage plus facile pour couper un peu l’effort et me ravitailler. Viens le virage à droite, et les pentes qui n’offrirons plus de répit jusqu’au sommet ; étonnamment je maintiens encore 300W voir plus sans être dans le dur et j’aperçois Julien en contre bas avec un coureur ; à ce moment je ne sais pas si c’est un concurrent de la grimpée qui tente de s’accrocher ou si c’est un homme revenant de l’arrière. J’estime mon avance autour des 2’ à cet instant ; rien n’est fait ! Quelques lacets plus haut le vent se fait sentir et gros coup de moins bien ; je me bats à présent pour juste tenir un bon 4,3 w/kg même si la FC reste à bon niveau. De plus je vois clairement que c’était bien un coureur de notre course qui était revenu sur Julien ; c’est Benjamin Favre-Taylaz et il vient de s’isoler se mettant à ma poursuite. Quelques instants de doute surtout jusqu’aux Granges où j’ai toujours du mal ici puis passé ce secteur je me rends compte que l’écart semble se stabiliser ; à 3km du sommet, malgré le vent toujours défavorable, je sens que ça va le faire ; je ne faiblis plus et conserve mon avantage en maintenant 290-295W : J’ai même le temps de bien savourer dans la partie finale où les murs de neige ne sont malheureusement pas au rendez-vous cette année.

Je termine victorieusement en 3h07’14 ; il m’aura manqué une petite dizaine de W sur le segment Télégraphe-Galibier par rapport à ce que j’espérais mais il faut aussi prendre en compte notre échappée, non prévue ; ça reste solide ! Benjamin termine 2eme en 3h09’39, un écart de 2’25 qui confirme que je n’ai rien perdu sur les derniers kms, Julien conservant la 3eme place en 3h12’35. Un immense plaisir sur ces derniers kms, limite j’aurai bien continué un peu plus ! En tout cas voilà un format de course intéressant, court avec du dénivelé et l’absence de vallée. L’organisation est au top ; podium protocolaire au sommet au fil des arrivées avec remise des lots au moment du repas sans attente ; un repas de qualité, couleurs locales avec notamment les crozets accompagnés de diots savoyards. Encadrement, sécurité, bénévoles souriants et n’hésitant pas à nous encourager : vraiment que du positif pour cette jeune épreuve qui espérons-le perdurera un moment !

Mardi 21 juin : MUSIQUE

De la croix de Toulouse à Briançon, le bivouac surplombe Briançon et les constructions Vauban qui entourent l'ancienne ville. Descente de 2 heures et journée de repos le temps de visiter et de préparer la suite. La ville est le point de convergence de cinq vallées dont la Durance, la vallouise, la Clarée ou encore du Guil qui mène vers le Queyras vers lequel je me dirigerai demain.

C'est aussi un point de départ reconnu par les amateurs de vélo avec le col du Galibier, de l’Izoard, et le terrible Granon franchi hier.

Fêtes de la musique ce soir, temps très couvert. J'attends la pluie avec impatience 🥵.

Demain, direction Brunissard, une belle étape, difficile, mais mais mais… demain soir… Champagne et séquence émotion 🥂

Tour de France Stage 12 Preview

The Route: 165km and 4,650m of vertical gain. Riders will be warm-up on rollers for the start as it’s straight up the Col du Lautaret and to the Galibier although it’s a climb that starts gentle on a big road before getting steeper and steeper, especially after the turning at the Lautaret. The HC point at the top is big goal for anyone with an interest in the mountains competition.

The Finish: the famous 21 hairpins of Alpe d’Huez. There are actually 23 to the finish once you include the extra two bends once inside the ski resort. It’s 13.8km at an average of 8.1%, but the main climb is consistently a steep 9-10%. The climb is regular and the famous hairpin bends matter, as they’re engineered and flat so that tourist coaches can pass with ease and so offer the cyclist a change in rhythm. As an engineered road it’s also got large rock walls to reflect the heat making it more of a furnace and the temperature is raised further by the dense crowds. The slope eases into town and there’s a final bend to the left and then the 220m finishing straight.
