Researchers redesign class of polymers naturally created by living microorganisms
They've been called "dream" plastics: polyhydroxyalkanoates, or PHAs. Already the basis of a fledgling industry, they're a class of polymers naturally created by living microorganisms, or synthetically produced from biorenewable feedstocks. They're biodegradable in the ambient environment, including oceans and soil.
But there's a reason PHAs haven't taken off as a sustainable, environmentally benign alternative to traditional plastics. Crystalline PHAs are brittle, so not as durable and convenient as conventional plastics. They cannot easily be melt-processed and recycled, making them expensive to produce.
Colorado State University polymer chemists led by Eugene Chen, University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry, have created a synthetic PHA platform that addresses each of these problems, paving the way for a future in which PHAs can take off in the marketplace as truly sustainable plastics.
Chen and colleagues report a new class of redesigned PHAs, readily accessible via chemical catalysis, in the journal Science.

Colorado State University wants students to know that if they are "affected by a free speech event," they are not alone. There are resources available. They can get help.
That's according to a sign spotted on campus by a coordinator for Turning Point USA, a conservative student group. The university confirmed that the sign is real. It reads: "If you (or someone you know) are affected by a free speech event on campus, here are some resources…"
The resources in question are phone numbers and websites for the Dean of Students, Office of Equal Opportunity, CSU Health Network Counseling, Ombuds (for CSU employees), Multicultural Counseling, Employee Assistance Program, Vice President of Inclusive Excellence, Victim's Assistance Hotline, Bias Reporting hotline, and several others.
Those last two provide means for aggrieved students to summon the campus authorities to investigate their alleged mistreatment. CSU's bias reporting form asks that submissions include identifying details—including identification number, phone number, and residence hall—about the perpetrator so that school officials can track them down.
The university did not respond to a request for comment, but provided the following statement to Fox News:
"CSU is committed to Free Speech as both a legal protection and a foundation of the robust debate that is core to higher education," a spokesperson for CSU told Fox News in a statement. "We also recognize the power of speech to impact people deeply, and we are committed to supporting all of our students. The sign is a list of some of the many resources available to our students. It is not related to any event in particular, but rather is intended to share resources knowing that protected speech will always, and must always, be part of higher education."
By suggesting that one student exercising free speech rights should prompt another student to fill out a bias incident report, the university is undermining public confidence in its commitment to the principles of the First Amendment—principles that CSU, as a public institution, is bound to follow.
The sign is already being widely mocked in conservative news media for playing into the delicate snowflake stereotype about modern college students. But sometimes, the shoe fits: Universities should not feel the need to offer investigative resources to students who were merely "affected by a free speech event."

Here’s the insidious part, though. Not only does the sign normalize emotional fragility, but the resources offered are biased towards reporting the speaker, not improving the resilience of the listener.
It also functions as a warning. It’s not just located in the student health center, offering resources to the few who may “need” them. It’s positioned prominently in a main thoroughfare, a literal signpost, so that everybody - whether students, faculty or guest presenters - knows that anyone can sic the Bias Response team, Equal Opportunity, the Dean of Students and/or the Vice President onto you if your academic freedom is troubling... to them.
“When we crucify criminals the most frequented roads are chosen, where the greatest number of people can look and be seized by this fear. For every punishment has less to do with the offense than with the example.”
--  M. Fabius Quintilianus, Declamationes, No. 274 (first century)

" #ColoradoStateUniversity hurricane researchers are predicting an extremely active Atlantic hurricane season in their initial 2024 forecast. The team cites record warm tropical and eastern subtropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures as a primary factor for their prediction of 11 hurricanes this year.
The #CSUTropicalWeatherandClimate team is predicting 23 named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. "

Chemists tackle the tough challenge of recycling mixed plastics
Plastics are everywhere in our daily lives, but not all plastics are created equal—far from it.
Take, for instance, polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic used to make soda bottles and clothing fibers. Then there's high-density polyethylene, from which shampoo bottles, milk jugs and cutting boards are derived. Don't forget polystyrene for packaging, or low-density polyethylene, which gives us cling wrap and grocery bags.
All of these are plastics, which are the most widely used types of polymers—macromolecules made of repeating units of small molecules called monomers. Post-consumer plastics are almost always collected as a mixed stream of waste, and products are often manufactured from two or more types of plastics.
The bad news is that these items, though all "plastics," are chemically and physically incompatible, and there's no good industrial method for reusing or re-processing them into other useful products. That's why most of those "recyclables" you're throwing into bins every week are going to a landfill. Even after careful sorting and separation into individual plastics, mechanical recycling usually yields inferior products, termed down-cycling.

Western spotted skunk lying against rock near cactus, ca. 1965
35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Mustelidae; Genus: Spilogale; Genus species: Spilogale gracilis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 23-34 cm; Identification: The Western spotted skunk is mostly black with variable white spots and stripes on its body; Habitat: Wastelands, brush, wooded areas; Diet: Omnivore: rodents, birds, eggs, insects, fruit; Reproduction: While mating occurs only during the late summer, females give birth either year-round or only in the spring depending on their location. Implantation of the fertilized eggs is delayed, followed by a four-month gestation period. On average, 4-5 young are born at a time; Social Structure: The skunk, as a general rule, is not a social animal; but the spotted skunk is more social than other skunks, and it will share dens in the winter; Behavior: Spotted skunks are nocturnal. Although they are mainly terrestrial, they will sometimes take shelter in trees. If threatened, a skunk will stamp its front feet, raise its tail, and walk with stiff legs. It will then spray a foul-smelling substance, aiming for the attacker's face; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: A skunk's spray can cause intense irritation of the eyes and temporary blindness. Their aim is accurate up to 2 meters. Rabies is commonly carried by skunks in the United States.

It’s already early May and that means it’s getting close to the start of the North Atlantic Basin tropical cyclone season.
If you live on or relatively close to the coast of the North Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, or the Caribbean Sea, this is a good time to become reacquainted with how to deal with tropical cyclones. The link above provides an excellent set of reminders.
Every day during the hurricane season I visit the official NOAA site. Getting accurate information is essential in an era of disinformation.
National Hurricane Center
If you’re looking for a general forecast for the 2023 season, the go-to place is the Colorado State University Hurricane Seasonal Forecasting site. It’s ironic that a landlocked Mountain state has a university known for it’s tropical weather expertise, but the CSU team is top notch.
Here is their extended-range forecast issued on April 13th.
If you want the TL;DR forecast that isn’t over 40 pages long, here is what they predict for 2023.

So it looks like a slightly below average season in terms of activity.
But even a low activity season can bring destruction. The 1992 Atlantic season had just six named storms – but the first of those was Category 5 Hurricane Andrew which made landfall both in Florida and in Louisiana.
