LESHY AND HIS YELLOW CAT, OTTO ARE TAKING OVERRRRR

Just picture this absolutely chaotic evil worm creature that everyone in the cult groud just naturally steers away from since he arrived. Eating their crops, tearing up monuments and decorations, hissing and baring his teeth at anyone who got too close.

And eventually he meets this yellow cat that goes into a full investigation to find out who is eating his crops only to realize that bush worm cryptic was the culprit.

Our dear Otto was never much of a fighter, but he figured it was better tl be on the worm’s nice side. If he even had one at all so, instead of just grabbing his shovel and bonking this dude away, he gave him some veggies.

First few times he definitely had to pull his hand back quick or the mf would’ve bitten it off, but they eventually got used to each other.

Leshy started being more mindful of what he ate and about messing up the crops, and Otto could focus better when it came to his farming and being useful in his community.

Probably evolves into a feral worm guard dog situation for Otto, but ayyy he got his pal and a nice day, he’s fulfilled.

Leshy likes his smell. Cat-y and earthy. Warm. Its nice, he likes it. Easy to recognize, easy to find.

They get along just fine 🙌✨

The font that is used in the Heat poster appears to be off one of those Dymo label printers. Back in the day they looked like this:

Not quite as intimidating as a Colt or a Beretta but you get the metaphor. In fact if you pay close attention to any Mann film you will notice just how much thematic belaboring is done on language, communication, categorization, the technologies and bureaucracies that mediate their application. The physical spaces and situations in which information gets exchanged. Even the very granular stylistic idiosyncrasies (vocabulary, slang, tone, intonation, gesture) that differentiate how individuals perform talk.

One of the things that jumped out at me when I watched Heat for the first time is that Vincent uses some bizarre slang terms that have no indexing in ordinary speech or trade jargon, e.g. "large-type" and "regular-type." Nobody really remarks upon how out of place these descriptors are considering he works for the LAPD and not a print or publishing company. They're far from the only examples of what I've started referring to as "Mannologisms" — irruptions of recurrent dialogue-weirdness or not-quite-rightness that I think most viewers either don't notice or write off as irrelevant. But I believe they are very significant in the subtextual gestalt.

You may recall that Mann hates the S-word and I suspect it's his own heritage and knowledge of history that makes it especially repellent to him. So much of Heat is secretly about the implicit violence of binary classification, insider/outsider, normative/degenerate, winner/loser, and the zero-sum games we perpetrate in order to enforce these boundaries. I keep thinking about Wittgenstein's notebooks, Otto Weininger and "self-hatred," fin-de-siècle antisemitism and the smears deployed against Jewish artists in Western Europe: That we are biological and civic aliens lacking the volkisch spirit with which to produce original and authentic works of true creative genius; that with our cold, calculating, parasitic minds we are capable only of replication, mimicry, a detached and destructive analysis that can only annihilate whatever culture it seeks to understand and represent. I think about the uproar in the 60s and 70s about a "Jewish Literary Mafia" allegedly controlling publishing/academia in the US (it's not quite what it sounds like). And it becomes hard not to envision Neil and Vincent as allegorical embodiments of the artist as author and critic.

This is the fragrance that put us on the map in ‘08. A strange combination that used to be made with a homemade tincture of herbs, citrus peels, and flowers. As I was learning how to make perfume, I experimented with many older methods. This helped me to understand the aromatic relationships between plants themselves. There is no better way to learn a skill than to just start doing it. That is the ethos of Cowboy Grass. Though it is strange, it was immediately a hit.

Cowboy Grass is a play of contrasts. The freshness of bergamot with the dustiness of thyme. The medicinal notes of clary sage and basil against the softness of rose otto. And ultimately the dry peanut wood crackle of vetiver against the warm amber of benzoin.

Cowboy Grass evokes the American West.

The landscape is filled with grasses, herbs, and shrubs that were used as medicine, food, and ritual for thousands of years. It is impossible to describe just how big the Wild West is.

When I first drove across the country on tour with a band in college, I remember one plant kept getting all over the front of our van. It was blowing everywhere that year. I found out later it was clary sage. I was shocked to see real tumbleweeds, the Rockies, the deserts, etc.

Clary Sage is at the heart of Cowboy Grass. An herb once used for “fissures of the eye” or some ancient horrific malady, clary sage is pungent, whitish green, fresh and powerful. It can be pulled in many directions. In CBG the green grass notes are expanded upwards towards the top of the fragrance intersecting the rosewood-bergamot’s red woody freshness. The grass effect is modified at the bottom where a rich mapley accord of vetiver and amber reside. The expanse of grasslands almost sacred to an American.

Cowboy Grass is dirty-leathery. Not the warm aristocratic leather of drawing room sofas, but rather the saddles worn and ragged from years of use by riders who transversed the West. Perhaps there’s even a nod to the ashy-oily scent of an antique Colt 45 revolver strapped within the seat. This may be what Mick smells like when he whines out the chorus in "Torn & Frayed" (part of the Stones epic "Exile on Main Street"–a masterpiece of American musical idioms).

Side note. One time an Italian man who is influential in the beauty industry told me that Cowboy Grass smelled nothing of Cowboys.

Screen and stage veteran Jered Barclay passes away at 91

Jul 28, 2022 20:15 IST Washington , July 28 (Always First): Seasoned stage and film actor Jered Barclay, who appeared in vaudeville and provided voiceovers for the animated television series Smurfs and Transformers, has passed away at the age of 91. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Barclay died Saturday in North Hollywood from MDS Leukemia, actress Myra Turley, his longtime friend with whom he performed in the two-person play A Tantalizing, directed by Harvey Perr, announced. Barclay began his nine-decade career in 1934 at the age of three, appearing in vaudeville with Judy Garland, Shirley Temple, and Sammy Davis Jr. He was also a director, photojournalist, and acting coach. At age 6, he started acting on the radio. At age 12, he travelled with the Clyde Beatty Circus, and at age 14, he made his theatrical debut. The Seattle native moved to Los Angeles after receiving a B.A. in drama from the University of Washington. He appeared in three episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Otto Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour (1961), as well as Roger Corman's 1958 sci-fi fantasy film War of the Satellites, in which he played John Compo. In movies like Rawhide, Bonanza, Cheyenne, Bronco, The Dakotas, Lawman, Colt.45, and Gunslinger, he played Jerry Barclay. Then, in 1962, he relocated to New York to take the stage in two plays by Edward Albee, Jerry in Eddie Parone's Zoo Story and a young man in Alan Schneider's The American Dream. Alongside James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons, Barclay played Meff in James Saunders' Next Time I'll Sing to You in 1963. On Broadway, he also played Deuperret in Peter Weiss' Marat Sade and Ludwig Max von Kupfer in John Osborne's A Patriot for Me. Barclay provided voiceovers for several animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera, including Foofur, The Little Rascals, Challenge of the GoBots, The Dukes, The Kwicky Koala Show, and The Smurfs. In The Transformers, he furthermore portrayed Cerebros.
