Pride Month 2022 - Scottish football referees Craig Napier and Lloyd Wilson come out as gay
Tumblr media
Two referees have come out as gay in an attempt to change the culture of Scottish football. Craig Napier and Lloyd Wilson become the first openly gay participants in men’s Scottish football since Justin Fashanu, who played for Airdrie and then Hearts in 1993 and 1994, several years after announcing his sexuality.
Napier, who took charge of 10 top-flight games in Scotland in the 2021-22 season, spoke about his sexuality in a video on the Scottish Football Association Twitter account.
“We need to see the climate change so that people do feel that they can be their true self and live happily and comfortably in their own skin, and that needs to then transcend into football,” he said.
Tumblr media
Wilson, who referees in Scotland’s lower leagues, talked about his sexuality in a video on the YouTube channel of the mental health charity Back Onside.
Asked why he was speaking publicly now, Wilson said: “I think really the reason being that this has been a horrific journey, to be honest. A journey of maybe 17 years of living a life that I didn’t want to live, living a lie, living the way that other people maybe wanted me to live or that I thought other people wanted me to live. And probably dictated and directed in many ways by football.”

Openly LGBTQIA+ Celebrities
These are celebrities who have recently come out as LGBTQIA+ or whom I’ve recently learned about or whom I hadn’t mentioned in previous posts of this type. Needless to say, this list is highly arbitrary and incomplete.

Eureka O'Hara (drag queen)
V(anessa) Pappas (business person)
Gina Pareño (actress)
Anna Paul (TikTokker)
Byron Perkins (athlete)

Continuing the tradition from my old blog (which has been unceremoniously deleted by tumblr without much of an explanation why) I’m doing daily posts during June to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride by showcasing openly LGBTQIA+ celebrities and various content about or created by LGBTQIA+ people such as music videos, characters on TV shows, movie trailers, …

Debut of the Day: On this day in 1967, Yvonne Craig (1937-2015) first appeared as Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl in Stanford Sherman and Oscar Rudolph’s ‘Batman’ episode "Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin" aired on ABC.
In January 1967’s Detective Comics #359, Barbara Gordon’s modern Batgirl first appeared in Gardner Fox and and Carmine Infantino’s “The Million-Dollar Debut of Batgirl!”. In the same year, actress Yvonne Craig brought Barbara’s Batgirl to life for the first time in the television series “Batman”’s first episode of the third season "Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin".
The Penguin (Burgess Meredith) plans to gain total immunity from the law by kidnapping and forcing to marry the Gotham City police commissioner’s daughter, Librarian Barbara Gordon (Yvonne Craig). As Commissioner Gordon (Neil Hamilton), Chief O’Hara (Stafford Repp), Bruce Wayne (Adam West) and his ward Dick Grayson (Burt Ward) try to pay ransom for the return of Barbara, Penguin only wants marriage or he threatens to hurt the Commissioner. Agreeing to marriage in order to protect her father, Barbara changes into her secret vigilante guise as Batgirl and plans to take Penguin and his henchmen down. When Batman and Robin go to The Penguin’s hideout to rescue not only Barbara but an also kidnapped Alfred Pennyworth (Alan Napier) mistaken for the wedding’s preacher, the Dynamic Duo are placed in a deathtrap that only their new costumed ally can help with their escape.
Craig's Batgirl, who would be a reoccurring character for the remainder of the series, stood tall with the male dominant Dynamic Duo as the smart, beautiful, independent ally that became an overnight symbol of female empowerment to young girls and women watching in this late 1960s era. Yvonne Craig broke the mold of the definition of a superhero inside and outside of comic books, which led the way for other female actresses to put heroes on the big and small screen.

Magda Eriksson: Blackpool’s Jake Daniels has given me hope for the next generation of gay male footballers
The bravery of Jake Daniels, who has come out as gay at the age of 17, will help others to feel less alone
By Magda Eriksson
I will begin this month’s column with a confession. It may be the off season but I don’t actually enjoy being off all that much. In fact, I think I’m addicted to training. Let me explain. As a footballer I am so used to a routine of always training that when I break it, I start to feel sluggish without that release of adrenalin and those endorphins. In fact, my ideal holiday is getting up in the morning, training and then having the rest of the day to decide what I want to do.
Immediately after the season ended, I had one week completely off. For the first few days I was still exhausted from the FA Cup final, with extra time and the whole emotional experience of that game. Then, from the second week, I began doing some exercises in the gym again.
I’ve got a gym programme which the strength and conditioning coach at Chelsea has provided and, with an eye on July’s Women’s Euros, I also have conditioning guidance from our Swedish national-team staff. Both sides have been very open and understanding. The Sweden squad is announced on Tuesday and assuming I am on the list, I should be in good shape when the squad come together on 20 June.
This last week I’ve also been doing football work with Pernille [Harder] here in Stockholm. I am doing the UEFA B coaching licence back at Chelsea so it was fun planning our own sessions and thinking about different things that can benefit our positions. It says a lot about what football nerds we are, though I do feel lucky too. We were doing some one-on-ones drills and for me to come up against one of the best attackers in the world on my off season is quite a luxury!
I contacted my childhood club, Enskede IK, to get permission for us to use their pitches. The funny thing is that in Sweden, most pitches are open to everyone and one day we had to share the space with lots of kids. You had Pernille and me doing our exercises … and all these children shouting, “Are you Magda?”
This has been my first stay at home since right after the Olympics last August. After a tournament you are so tired and I just walked around like a zombie. Now I feel refreshed and am trying to enjoy every minute. I’m godmother to two of my best friends’ children – they’re both 18 months old so hopefully they can now remember my face.
I’ve also had time to think more about Jake Daniels, the young Blackpool footballer, and the significance of the step he has taken by coming out as gay. I am so impressed by his bravery in coming out as an active gay male footballer at the age of just 17.
It is one thing if it you are a retired footballer or you have already been out privately for a long period of time; the fact he has felt able to take this step at 17 gives me hope for the next generation. I will be interested to see if he now wants to take on the role of a spokesperson – and that is a big responsibility – or whether he simply wished to tell the world he’s gay and then play his football. That’s for him to decide.
I’ve read that he has a mentor talking to him – a former player he had contacted – and this shows the importance of having people to talk to. Hopefully the next person can reach out to Jake, in turn, and this will create a snowball effect. Only this week we’ve seen two Scottish referees, Craig Napier and Lloyd Wilson, come out and this representation – with gay people in different roles in football – will help contribute to an accepting environment. I imagine if you’re a young gay referee who sees this news, you now have less reason to feel alone.
I’ve also been encouraged by a recent meeting Pernille and I had with Rio Ferdinand to talk about homophobia in sport. I got a sense that he really wanted to help. He’s a straight, male ex-footballer with a huge platform and he genuinely wanted to hear how he could make life easier for other people and this matters as a lot of people listen to him and look up to him.
Ultimately, every little step contributes to normalising something that for so long was seen as weird, disgusting and even criminal – all these stigmas which have created a sense of pressure inside every young teenager who realises they are gay. We’ve all had that feeling that “I’m not normal” yet now, as more and more people talk about it, the more normal it becomes. That said, the fact Jake Daniels has made headlines all over the world shows it is still a big thing. My hope is that there’ll come the day when it doesn’t make the news at all.

57 years ago today...
"Batman" premiered on ABC TV, January 12th, 1966. The series quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Children were able to watch it as a straight adventure series, while adults could appreciate it's camp sensibilities and dead-pan humor. The series had a colorful pop art style that was unlike anything else on TV. The series also had a huge impact on sales of Batman comics, as well comic books in general, and helped launch Batman into his current status as the most popular comic book character of all time.
The series was originally intended to be an hour long, but ABC only had two half-hour time slots available, so the episodes were split in two. Which the first part of the Episode would leave our Dynamic Duo in a cliff hanger for the BATFAN’s to stay tuned into the the second part of the story and wonder how their Heroes will escape from the rogues gallery of villains
Batman ran three seasons 120 Episodes and the
series spun-off a motion picture in 1966 featuring most of the TV cast.

The other things which made this Live Action TV Series Great was the Bat gadgets such as the Ironic Batmobile which was designed and built George Barris using 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car he had purchased from Ford for $1.00. Ford had used it for many years to promote "the car of tomorrow"
And Mr Barris had only three weeks and $15,000 (US) to turn it into the Batmobile, which included adding a Ford Galaxy chassis
Even to when people see the Original TV Batmobile it turns heads it’s the most Famous car from TV and film History
This past last year we lost the legend Batman himself Mr Adam West 9th June, 2017 at the age of 88
I was so grateful to had meet Mr West while attending LA Comic Con 2016 I was able to have a few laughs with the Man himself who was a kind and friendly gentleman it only lasted a short time meet and greet but I will never forget it as I Met My BATMAN
Mr West will live on as he made TV History and worldwide fans young and old and he will always be in our heart

The Florida Gators have vastly improved its recruiting strategy ever since the departure of former head coach Dan Mullen. After the arrival of Billy Napier, the future of Florida football looks promising, especially in the eyes of experts at ESPN. Staff writer Craig Haubert composed his top 50 recruiting programs…

RKO Radio Picture's Unique Horror Genre and how Cat People (1942) Drew on Studio Talent
Julia Merolle
After having watched Cat People (1942) this week, the genre of horror has grown popular from Universal Studios, as we saw last week with the 1930s. RKO Radio Pictures was a film company that was created in 1928 and was one of the main film studios during Hollywood’s Golden Age, which was between the 20s and 60s. Due to the success of many Universal horror films, RKO decided to create their own horror films, Cat People being one of them. Cat People was unique to RKO Radio Pictures’ studio style because it brought up important aspects different from most horror films. For example, in the film, women aren’t believed in society and even when they reach out for help, they are told they are insane and over-dramatic. An example of this is when Irena tells Oliver her husband and Dr. Judd, her psychiatrist about her problems, yet they push them off.
Additionally, this film does a great job of showcasing how women are treated in society when trying to get help. For a movie made in 1942, this was the most progressive thing about it, which I applaud. I believe that for this reason, this drew on many studio talents such as Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Tom Conway, Jane Randolph, and Jack Holt as the main characters in the film Cat People. This also drew on a supporting cast of Alan Napier, Elizabeth Dunne, Elizabeth Russell, Alec Craig, Dot Farley, Theresa Harris, and Mary Halsey. When relating the film Cat People to RKO’s unique style, it was important because RKO had originally focused on musicals in the 1930s but due to seeing the success of horror from Universal Studios in the 1930s, they decided to create their own low-budget horror films with producer Val Lewton. This then brought RKO into the realm of horror and film noir, which were a part of RKO’s unique style of the 1940s.
Something else that was important about Cat People this week was that this film was at the time of the Hays Code, which I discussed in my post about Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein last week. The importance of the Hays Code when relating it to Cat People, was that it didn’t follow some of the rules that it originally prohibited because it wanted to make it safe to the public. For example, in Cat People, Oliver and Alice were obviously more than friends, even though Oliver was married. Another point is that Irena was technically the villain since she turns into a cat, even though she is the main character and according to the Hays Code, we aren’t supposed to sympathize with the antagonist. As I mentioned last week, the Hays Code was overall just ridiculous because it set very strict guidelines. Luckily, Cat People got by the Hays Code because of its message about women and how they are treated in society, which shows how RKO was ahead of its time, even though it is now defunct.

Super Rugby: Richie Mounga to depart Crusaders after 2023
Richie Mounga and the Crusaders kick off their 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season against the Chiefs on 24 February at Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch. Memberships are available now. Mo’unga debuted for the Crusaders on 27 February 2016, facing the Chiefs at home and scoring 13 points. He made the starting line-up for the rest of the season.
“This team has given so much to me as a rugby player and as a person, and in return I’ve always wanted to give my everything to the team both on and off the field, to help us succeed, and to be the best environment for players,” Mo’unga said.
Asked about his star first-five’s departure after the 2023 season, Crusaders Head Coach Scott Robertson said Mo’unga was “a special man”.
“If there’s one player that continues to leave their mark on this team, that’d be Richie Mo’unga,” Robertson said.
“Through his performances in the biggest games, the biggest moments – he stood up, which Crusaders do. He’s a special man, a local boy, pride of the community, and there’s no doubt about it – Richie can play.
Richie Mo’unga outlines his reasoning for signing a three year contract with Toshiba, and leaving the All Blacks post World Cup. Understand the deal is worth close to $2 million per year, making him one of the world’s highest paid players https://t.co/KVdJa4nucS
— Liam Napier (@liamnapiernz) December 26, 2022
“When Richie is on, the team is on. He brings out the best from all the players. For me, he is one of the most influential Super Rugby players ever – how he plays the game, his ability to score points consistently year after year in those crucial moments.
“The biggest thing for me with Richie is how much he cares about the team and the club, about the players he plays with and the people he plays for. He means a lot to the Crusaders and we wish him all the best. There’ll be a time to properly say goodbye to him at the end of the season, but for now we’re all focused on the job in front of us.”
