personally i think every time they go to the bar after the benders and Sam leaves first, Dean panics internally a little bc he can't go through that again, and next time what if he's too late? he tried to make sure sam never left alone but sam started getting real moody about it so dean gives him his freedom and maybe just secretly keeps his phone gps on at all times.
