PREVIEW: STARS ON ICE AT ROGERS ARENA - MAY 18, 2023
Tumblr media
It will be an evening to remember. The Canadian finale of Stars On Ice returns to a familiar venue in Rogers Arena on May 18, and it will mark Kurt Browning’s final date on the tour - albeit on home soil, as Browning will be joining the U.S. portion shortly after to complete his swan song. The most consistent performer on the Canadian tour, he is leaving behind an unmatched legacy.
Elvis Stojko will be joined by fellow Canadian icon Patrick Chan, who is returning to the tour for the first time in four years. Chan, known for his artistry and elegance on ice, will be rivaled (only in the friendly kind, of course) by American Jason Brown. In April, Brown captained Team USA to gold at the World Team Trophy in Japan. Doing their part to capture the team title, Alexa Knierim & Brandon Frazier had a pair of first place skates to end their spectacular season.
Tumblr media
The graceful Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier, a favourite of ours’ to capture, and two-time national champion Madeline Schizas will round out the Canadian contingent. Returning from last year’s tour, two-time U.S. Champion Alissa Czisny, and four-time Japanese Champion Satoko Miyahara.
After perusing social media, we know there will be programs to “To Build a Home” (The Cinematic Orchestra), The Backstreet Boys, “Brand New” (Ben Rector) and Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).”
We are always impressed by the slick and emotive choreography that showcases the skaters’ skills, in jumps, lifts, energy or speed, likely a combination of the qualities that make these skaters elite. Both individual and ensemble routines will fill the ice, and we can’t wait to see the programs live, with crowd interaction as a given!
The tour offers discounts for seniors, CAA members, Entertainment Books holders, groups of 10+ and family/kids (12 and under with the purchase of one full-priced adult ticket). It’s the perfect opportunity for an outing with friends, family and community groups!
For further information and promotions details, visit their official website and purchase your tickets through Ticketmaster.

Csoi Crafts - Badge/ Pin
I made a pin! Inspired by our dearest @csoisoi 💕 I wanted to make a Daleth pin for Goemon and had no idea how to do it. I thought I'd use cardboard and that's when this precious post dropped in!
A few words about CSoisoi: An amazing person in the fandom (mairuma and more) who is both a talented writer and artist, their interpretations on characters or events in the manga has an aesthetic quality ❤️ personally, just meeting them has enriched my fandom experience and I really wanted to post this when they're around (but like Purson, Soi soi is currently missing 😔) ok going forward
So I went ahead and followed the instructions to make my very own pin! The way it's made is so fun to do and with each step I grew amazed!
So first of all, I gathered all the materials according to soi soi's instructions.
1. safety pins, glue gun, clear nail polish, scissors and pictures I want to turn into pins 🥰
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Taped the tape onto a plastic container lid and made two bases with glue gun. Rectangular shape for badge and circle for the other one which is special. Then I placed the pin on the glue. I hope I did it right.
Tumblr media
3. When the glue hardened I peeled off the tape and turned it around. Then I pasted the pictures onto the tape. Cut off the excess tape and glue. Back and front:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Finally, applied clear nail polish on the pictures and Wabam! 😆 Pins!
Tumblr media
They're not as perfect as the ones Soi soi made. Though the front looks good (they're print outs) the glue at the back looks uneven but I'm so proud of them, they're thick and wouldn't get damaged. I thank Soi soi for posting this valuable craft idea. It felt like doing a summer camp activity!
Goemon is happy ❤️ It looks so good on him 🥰
Tumblr media
So am I ❤️
This is a doll representative of me. I bought it from the place that feels to me like magic street (m!ik).
Tumblr media
What more should I say? If I'm happy today, this is why 🥰 I'm glad that this amazing person (Purson 😆) is here and inspired me to do this fun and worthwhile activity. ❤️ May God bless you abundantly Soi soi and may others also try it out and experience the joy of creating pins 🥰

this series is absolutely wonderful and so funny, if you're looking for a humor fic with theatre-kid zuko and azula redemption, this is the fic!

Day 29: Exhibition Program
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
Just soo much fun! I love how they say for touring shows they always want to have a program that’s just for them and is fun and they get to dance. They love their more emotional programs too but they love having that balance and fun creative outlet and entertaining an audience with something not so serious in theme. I also love hearing Scott describe the song and the dance- T loves Marvin Gaye and so of course scootie will love dancing with her to one of her fave songs- anything to make her happy, and as always sneaks in a back front door brag for how amazing T is while demeaning himself (oh scootie pattotie 🥲🤦‍♀️). And you can so see how happy they are. Not to mention the CRAZY tricks, superb skating skills and star power. This version from worlds is particularly endearing. During the practice they are obviously trying to remember it as it’s the first time they are performing it, presumingly having learned it over the previous summer maybe or sometime earlier in the season. It’s cute to see T taking the lead in the practice and then also in the performance kinda coz Scott.. doesn’t know what he’s doing 😄 in the most adorable way. You can see their personalities shine in a way that kinda takes you back to them as kids from an audience perspective- we know them as these incredible athletes who are oly and world champions and can perform anything and everything to supreme quality, but getting to see them just have fun, as T would say much later (post retirement) that the giddy joy they had dancing together as kids learning dances and playing characters, she kinda lost the excitement in that until they made their comeback. But this program here I think you see a little bit of it and I hope they did to. Overall it’s just so pure to see two best friends doing what they love together. That is the basis of everything about them and in this dance it is maybe the most obvious 💙
OH! And let us not forget the return of the Pink Floyd split slide/lift 💯

Hi! I wondered if you might post something about the top T&S dances casual fans might not know about (deep cuts, lol). As a newer fan, when I came upon "Into the Mystic" I was so excited and felt like I found something really special. I wonder what your faves and/or specific performances of those more 'hidden' performances might be. Thanks as always for helping us enjoy the T&S fandom. : )
Oh, I’m really going to struggle with this, lol. Because I was a fan for so long and because I was an obsessive fan, none of their programs seem like they might be unknown, to me. I mean, you say Into the Mystic and while I am genuinely happy that you were so excited to discover it, it wouldn’t occur to me to list it as something that would be unknown. (This is not intended to diminish you at all - I have had many of those discoveries myself, as have anyone who is new to or you know, not obsessive about, a subject. Those discoveries are awesome and exciting and should always be celebrated.). When I stop and think about it, Mystic was only skated during Stars on Ice and a show in China (IIRC) so I suppose it would be rather one of those ‘deep dive’ performances. At the time, it was known as being the program that VM choreographed in Scott’s kitchen, so it has it’s own fandom fame lol.
Probably the more obscure programs, to me, are the ones that VM were ‘required’ to skate to, because of an expectation in a show that they were performing in; because of that, there are often few to no recorded versions of the program, and I often don’t think much about them, as a VM skate, because they were not something VM themselves chose to skate to. And yet, they are rarely ones I tend to remember as there isn’t a lot of ‘connection’ to it - they didn’t choose the music, choreography will be recycled in bits and pieces from other programs, and there often isn’t an ‘official’ recording (television or streamed) and if we were lucky there is still fan recordings.
Instrument of Peace, in Shall We Dance On Ice 2010, skating to a live performance by The Canadian Tenors, fan camera. (There are television-filmed versions of this and the next, but particularly this one was interrupted by shots of the singers, so the fan cam is the way to go.)
youtube
The debut of their short dance, with filler where the Golden Waltz would be, at Shall We Dance on Ice 2010, fan camera.
youtube
Let It Snow, Winter Dreams on Ice. A wee local show, after Tessa’s surgery in 2010.
youtube
Good Kisser, Skate Niagara 2015, fan camera (while it was a VM-planned program and it was officially shown on camera for CSOI, the smaller venue and the close up camera and just that extra rawness of a brand new program make this my favourite version).
Ballet program, Festa on Ice 2008.
Valse Triste, Stars, Stripes and and Skates 2006 - another competition program debut during a show.
youtube
Prince, Stars on Ice 2017; they shifted their competition SD into an exhibition piece and it was seen only during CSOI; the competitive season would have had this as an exhibition, but with Gord Downie’s death, VM created Long Time Running instead.
Shine, Shine my Star, Moscow show in 2014, directly following the Sochi Olympics (they didn’t even go home and they seemed so tired lol).
And finally my ultimate favourite obscure: What’s Love Got to Do With It, Skate Niagara 2016. It was a ‘we’re in competitive shape’ masterpiece - showcasing plenty of new tricks and musical nuance and difficulty while emphasizing their improved showmanship after a couple of years of exhibition work. And of course, its own fandom-famous back story of locking eyes, knowing they had to skate to this while in a pub in Scotland, and a hint of the making-of this program in a CBC story, plus a the dopamine hit of them announcing their Comeback right before this debut.
youtube
Chills for me, every time.

I think the core audience for skating shows outside of the Olympic seasons are general skating fans who are attending CSOI (or SOI) as a brand almost and will be happy to see whoever is put in front of them. Of course having a big name like VM or Nathan Chen in the US would bring more casual fans but I tend to think that the casting doesn’t matter a whole lot as the people who go every year won’t mind seeing the same folks over and over.
I was never a big Weapo fan when they skated competitively but they are a good show skating team. They tended to be strong in lifts and that plays well in the show programs. I’m sure the Canadanes would be excellent too and would love to see multiple dance teams rather than so-so singles skaters honestly.
That said, as long as CSOI is the dominant brand, it’s not likely another show will be able to supplant it. I mean even VM could only sell out one tour immediately following major viral success/fame. (I know the fandom likes to blame the drop in sales for RTR on personal drama, but the fact is that there isn’t a sufficient audience to support 2 tours annually, and CSOI was earlier in the year and the established brand — I went to both in 2019 and RTR was a far better show — better skaters, choreo, music etc., but it wasn’t enough. If anything, it shows what an anomaly the success of TYCT was.)
Maybe IAM needs to consider branching out to do more virtual shows or something?
I think most of the current line up are good show skaters including WeaPo (though I will say that having seen them during TTYCT I only enjoyed one of their programs), I just think that for many years SOI and CSOI truly gave representation to competing skaters and watching the current seasons where 90-95% of the CSOI line up have been (very) retired skaters just makes me sad for the current skaters, many of whom are some of the top in the world.
It is true that in North America there's barely room for skating shows in general, and only CSOI is barely surviving (emphasis on barely). TTYCT sold amazingly as well as CSOI 2018, both were close to sold out in many cities, but it makes perfect sense considering the success the Canadian delegation had in PyeongChang, they had a lineup completely made from World champions and Olympic medalists, it was incredible. RTR sold not as well but it also made sense and as you said it had nothing to do with made-up personal drama or how it was promoted, it was a tricky time in the year and skating is not as big and most of the lineup was international (which tbh was amazing and for me a much better line up) which also might have been tricky for some viewers. Either way, having successfully produced two tours probably showed TS that the market is limited and that it's more effort than it's worth and I totally not blame them for it.
Bottom line is that CSOI is basically the only remaining show in Canada and them having a lineup that is so disconnected from the current skating field just disappoints me.
