Fig and apple pie with pecan-cardamom crust. The figs and the apples were both foraged, which is always fun. Smells super good !
It was supposed to be in a pie tin, but I had 3/4 of a pound of figs rather than the half pound the recipe called for. And then needing to scale the recipe complicated the already confusing situation of reading while dyslexic. So I largely gave up on reading, and this is more inspired by the recipe than anything else, but here it is nonetheless: Fig, Apple, and Walnut Tarts. Anyway, it ended up too big to fit in a pie tin, hence the cobbler dish.

Many, many thanks to all of you who participated in Elder Cats Appreciation Week! I cannot express the extent of my appreciation for those of you who participated, both big and small, every day or just one or two. It was wonderful to see a variety of new content and positivity for the older cats, and look at all the different ways you all contributed. This was so much fun and I hope to do this again sometime in the future!
I do encourage you that, in spite of the appreciation week being over, to continue playing with these characters and including them in your stories and HCs and fun - to reflect on why they are often left out/reduced to singular and otherwise flat roles/antagonized either due to their inherent age, or argued younger because they’re more “well liked” over others.  At the end of the day, the goal of this week was to shed some light and appreciation on characters that are often neglected in fandom, and the best way to continue that work is to open yourself further to those you may not otherwise consider. Even just a little bit. That’s how we continue to broaden our horizons.
Happy days to all <3
#anyway yeah - thanks for coming into my world for a little while <3#oldiesweek#extemporize back chat#i have two more art pieces that i was late in producing that i will be posting soon in makeup - unfortunately my jobs made it#so that i didn't have enough time for all of them - but i will not neglect them <3#i feel a little guilty but also i need to come to the realization that i produce the majority of content for these cats anyway#i also encourage you into looking into senior and adult cats in your area that may be in need of homes over their kitten counterparts#should you have the means to care for them#and - if you have older people in your life who you care for - to educate yourself on the current state of the elderly where you live#elder people are amongst the top neglected portions of the population in North America#1 in 10 individuals in these groups have reported abuse and neglect#10% of Canadian seniors are victim to crime every year with the number rapidly growing#and covid *severely* increased some of these statistics in cases of casual verbal abuse and violence#that the theatre and performance world greatly under values older actresses especially unless they are within a prime of diva-hood#and remember though it may seem far away - someday you will no longer be in your teens and twenties#your life does not end when you are 30 40 50 and beyond#opportunities in your life should not be limited as you age - your *worth* should never be limited or affected by your age#because if there is nothing else i hope people step away with it's education#anvil-y? yeah but some anvils need to be dropped

People will really be like “yeah lockdowns hurt our kids and we’re dealing with everything from speech delays and other developmental problems to behavioral problems and learning disabilities made worse but oh them catching something with the lethality of a common cold would be worse and even though the lockdowns didn’t stop the spread they were necessary and we were so brave”

Did my monthly check of my grad school email and found that the exhibit I made as my capstone project that never was actually made because of covid is being made by the museum I interned at and it’s gonna be installed at a nearby library and I should be happy all the work I put into it will be shown but that exhibit caused so much trauma I frankly would like it to be burned to the ground and scrubbed from my memory forever

Good morning!! I just realized a couple of days ago was the 2nd anniversary of my completion of my Draw Every Day for a Year challenge and!! I feel so proud of myself for completing that!! Especially when most of it was during the year of 2020!
That year was so hard and I struggled so much, but having that anchor of trying to improve and focusing on something that could push me day to day through quarantine was so instrumental in getting me to the better future that I'm in right now. When I think of how, even though I was in the darkest spot of my life, I was able to buckle down and do something that was important to me, I feel so so proud of myself.
That feels like the best version of me, and it shined when I was in such a dark place. A daisy sprouting up through the sidewalk. And knowing that I did that makes me feel so good about myself! It makes me feel like I can do anything as long as I believe in myself!

I do not care about Amber Heard or Johnny Depp, but that Twitter screencap floating around, saying that the attention/parody videos/memes of the trial are a plant to rile up MRAs before midterms? Very much in the "touch grass" department of posts.

Covid Update, USA, late December 2023: Buckle up, folks.
Tumblr media
Takeaway from his (very informative) thread:
Wastewater counts are obscenely high right now, belying the official case numbers. Considering that we've stopped collecting or reporting most COVID data, wastewater is the best way we have to judge the actual infection rate now.
We are currently seeing ten million new infections a week, and can expect that to greatly increase within the next three weeks.
If you've stopped masking, please start again, for your own safety and the safety of your community. Many hospital systems are already trending toward being overwhelmed right now; let's do what we can to lighten their burden.
Avoid unnecessary gatherings where possible.
Ventilate your spaces well (this is a good time to build that Corsi-Rosenthal box you were thinking about! I made one, it's great).
And just from me, personally--now's a good time to reevaluate casual habits. I've been careless, again, about touching my face. Time for me to knock it off!
This is a period where we need to act with more care. Not a time to panic, but a time to be more cautious.

Cat in the Hat:
"The German Health Minister gave an important update on the Covid situation yesterday.
I’ve written up the section of his speech from the video below for easy reading.
It’s immensely refreshing to see a government minister warning of the harms of Covid in such a transparent way."

Prof. Karl Lauterbach
Health Minister, Germany
4 December 2023
"This second (long Covid) round table was very interesting, lasting three and a half hours. It serves as a unique forum for dialogue among scientists, researchers and those affected by long Covid, facilitating the exchange of ideas.
There are many new findings about long Covid. Not all of them are good news. One piece of not-so-good news concerns the fact that long Covid is actually still a problem for those who are newly infected. One estimate that has been put forward is that the risk of contracting long Covid now, even after vaccination, is around 3%. Now you may say, "that's not such a big risk" , but there are tens of thousands of people who are repeatedly affected in a short period of time. And so, the long Covid problem has not yet been solved.
We have also established that there really are many subgroups of long Covid and that we do not yet have a cure. And it was clearly pointed out that we are also dealing with problems here that will challenge society as a whole, because vascular diseases often occur after long Covid. Throughout Europe, we are currently seeing an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in the middle-age group - from 25 to 50. This is associated with the consequences of Covid infections.
We also very often find cognitive impairment in older people. And one participant pointed out that it may well be like the Spanish flu, where 20 years after the Spanish flu there was a significant increase in Parkinson's disease and probably also dementia.
This is something we must pay attention to, as the past infection afiects how the immune system in the brain functions, as well as the brain's blood vessels, potentially increasing the long-term risk of these major neurodegenerative diseases. This is why we need to conduct very intensive research. This research has played a major role.
What is the overall assessment of the situation now?
We have to be careful. Long Covid is not curable at the moment. We also know that over 40% of those who have several manifestations of long Covid, for example, five or more, still have symptoms after 2 years, so it doesn't seem to heal spontaneously. We also know that those whose symptoms are more pronounced at the beginning are less likely to heal.
So some of what we know from the demographics of long Covid has been confirmed, and we now know more precisely which mechanisms in the brain, but also in the blood vessels and the immune system, are responsible for this. Professor Scheibenbogan will explain this briefly later.
At this point, I can only say the following - this is particularly important to me:
First of all, long Covid is a disease that stays with us and that we cannot yet cure. And we are seeing an increasing number of cases as the waves of infection continue to affect us.
Secondly, Covid is not a cold - with a cold, you don't usually see any long-term effects. You don't see any changes in the blood vessels. You don't usually see an autoimmune disease developing. You also don't usually see neurological inflammation - these are all things that we see with long Covid. Therefore, one should not assume that Covid infection is just a common cold. It can affect brain tissue and the vascular system, and we still lack an effective treatment, making these studies crucial.
Significantly, we know that the risk of long Covid decreases when you're infected but have been vaccinated. That's why it's concerning that only 3 million people have been vaccinated with the new, adapted vaccine. That is a very bad result.
Please protect yourself from severe infections.
Please protect yourself from long Covid.
Currently, the danger posed by Covid is indeed being underestimated. Nothing is worse than infecting someone at Christmas who then becomes seriously ill and may not fully recover."

Things I've learned from getting covid for the first time in 2023
I wear an N95 in public spaces and I've managed to dodge it for a long time, but I finally got covid for the first time (to my knowledge) in mid-late November 2023. It was a weird experience especially because I feel like it used to be something everyone was talking about and sharing info on, so getting it for the first time now (when people generally seem averse to talking about covid) I found I needed to seek out a lot of info because I wasn't sure what to do. I put so much effort into prevention, I knew less about what to do when you have it. I'm experiencing a rebound right now so I'm currently isolating. So, I'm making a post in the hopes that if you get covid (it's pretty goddamn hard to avoid right now) this info will be helpful for you. It's a couple things I already knew and several things I learned. One part of it is based on my experience in Minnesota but some other states may have similar programs.
--------
The World Health Organization states you should isolate for 10 days from first having symptoms plus 3 days after the end of symptoms.
--------
At the time of my writing this post, in Minnesota, we have a test to treat program where you can call, report the result of your rapid test (no photo necessary) and be prescribed paxlovid over the phone to pick up from your pharmacy or have delivered to you. It is free and you do not need to have insurance. I found it by googling "Minnesota Test to Treat Covid"
--------
Paxlovid decreases the risk of hospitalization and death, but it's also been shown to decrease the risk of Long Covid. Long Covid can occur even from mild or asymptomatic infections.
--------
Covid rebound commonly occurs 2-8 days after apparent recovery. While many people associate Paxlovid with covid rebound, researchers say there is no strong evidence that Paxlovid causes covid rebound, and rebounds occur in infections that were not treated with Paxlovid as well. I knew rebounds could happen but did not know it could take 8 days. I had mine on day 7 and was completely surprised by it.
--------
If you start experiencing new symptoms or test positive again, the CDC states that you should start your isolation period again at day zero. Covid rebound is still contagious. Personally I'd suggest wearing a high quality respirator around folks for an additional 8-9 days after you start to test negative in case of a rebound.
--------
Positive results on a rapid test can be very faint, but even a very faint line is positive result. Make sure to look at your rapid test result under strong lighting. Also, false negatives are not uncommon. If you have symptoms but test negative taking multiple tests and trying different brands if you have them are not bad ideas. My ihealth tests picked up my covid, my binax now tests did not.
--------
EDIT: I'd highly suggest spending time with friends online if you can, I previously had a link to the NAMI warmline directory in this post but I've since been informed that NAMI is very much funded by pharmaceutical companies and lobbies for policies that take autonomy away from disabled folks, so I've taken that off of here! Sorry, I had no idea, the People's CDC listed them as a resource so I just assumed they were legit! Feel free to reply/reblog this with other warmlines/support resources if you know of them! And please reblog this version!
--------
I know that there is so much we can't control as individuals right now, and that's frightening. All we can do is try our best to reduce harm and to care for each other. I hope this info will be able to help folks.
