MEDIA ADVISORY
NEW: COVID19 variant of interest JN.1
Geneva, 19 December 2023 -- Due to its rapidly increasing spread, WHO is classifying the variant JN.1 as a separate variant of interest (VOl) from the parent lineage BA.2.86. It was previously classified as VOl as part of BA.2.86 sublineages.
WHO advises people to take measures to prevent infections and severe disease using all available tools. These include:
-Wear a mask when in crowded, enclosed, or poorly ventilated areas, and keep a safe distance from others, as feasible
-Improve ventilation
-Practise respiratory etiquette - covering coughs and sneezes
-Clean your hands regularly
-Stay up to date with vaccinations against COVID-19 and influenza, especially if you are at high risk for severe disease
-Stay home if you are sick
-Get tested if you have symptoms, or if you might have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or influenza
For health workers and health facilities, WHO advises:
-Universal masking in health facilities, as well as appropriate masking, respirators and other PPE for health workers caring for suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients.
-Improve ventilation in health facilities

We're still in a pandemic, and it's getting worse. Get your bivalent booster, avoid crowded events if possible, and fucking give a shit about disabled people. WE don't have the luxury of pretending COVID is over.

WEAR A FUCKING MASK
Your usual reminder that COVID ISN'T OVER!! Please wear a mask whenever you're in public, lest you wish to join us long COVID folk who are permanently disabled in such a way that not only do our doctors not believe us, but we will NEVER get help for it.

Man. It really sucks how well aware I am that I need more social interaction, especially with the state of my life and mental health.
I sure would love to join a craft group! It would be great to just go hang out at a library! Would love to be able to easily visit with friends!
Unfortunately, the government has decided to continue to downplay the continuing pandemic, so no one masks or otherwise takes precautions, and I have to just. Not do anything ever again to keep me and my family safe.
No one has actually said it to my face yet, but I get the feeling more and more every day that a lot of people think I’m like. Doing this to myself, by refusing to lower precautions. And I keep sharing info about how bad COVID is and no one is listening. So. Ya know.

as someone whose been infected with covid multiple times im fucking running out of patience with being surrounded by people who refuse to mask, test themselves, or even stay home when showing symptoms treat me like my cautiousness is annoying to THEM.
sick of hearing “oh well if anyone was feeling sick i’m sure they won’t come” ITS FUCKING AIRBORNE
sick of being patronized for not wanting covid a fifth time.
even by people close to me, who care about me, who know the way covid has ravaged my body and brain. as if it’s not fact that people with No Symptoms At All are capable of spread. that’s pre symptomatic and asymptomatic. (If you think you haven’t been infected and you haven’t been testing yourself it’s entirely likely you’ve had an asymptomatic infection) That you’re most contagious 2-3 days before and after your symptoms begin. That it can take up to 14 days for symptoms to appear, and in that period you can pass on covid.
absolutely sick of peoples selfishness and unwillingness to even CONSIDER doing the bare minimum to even slow the spread? to even test before large gatherings? to give a shit at all?
while the rest of us are suffering through long covid or extreme isolation because leaving their home may kill them? anyways i don’t expect anyone to really read this i’m just feeling so tired and scared and left behind… i’m going to go broke because a decent set of masks is only found online for upwards of 50-60$ in my area.
fuck.

I'm home from work, infected with covid-19, yet again. As an immune compromised person, I'm starting to think covid is in love with me. This is my third infection this year alone.
I'm at the point in my infection where I'm getting worse. The old phrase "it gets worse before it gets better" comes to mind whenever I have covid.
I feel like it starts off mediocre, then you start to feel it and you're like "man this sucks"! That's when covid laughs and hits your harder.
I'm at the stage where my ears are half way plugged. It's becoming increasingly difficult to hear anything. I can't smell anymore, but I can still taste. Though taste is numbed. Nothing is like so delicious anymore it stands out. Everything kind of tastes just average.
My lungs have been burning for days now. But I haven't had a cough until today. Considering I still barely have a cough, that tells me it's still going to get worse.
My fever is so bad I'm drenched in sweat! I continuously randomly fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Due to my fever I'm having fever dreams. Shaking in my sleep even.
This isn't fun, I'm struggling with this infection. My immune system is having a rough time kicking it out.
Once again, they've put me on Paxlovid. The medication used in treating high risk patients, such as myself, for covid-19.
I'm writing all of this, even if no one reads it. Because I personally like to look back at where I was during certain times. Also, for those who do read, and are a part of my spooky community here on tumblr, just know you can probably expect me to posting more this upcoming week, as I will be stuck in bed.
And finally, because I am immune compromised. I have multiple autoimmune diseases as well as a ton of other chronic health conditions. It personally upsets me when people talk about how the pandemic is so called "over" or how covid is "irrelevant" now.
That is so far from the truth. In fact, covid is worse now than it ever was when we were on lockdown. The virus is also stronger now. It's learning to beat our vaccines. Which is why new ones keep immerging.
It's a deadly virus that's constantly mutating, it spreads at a rapid rate, especially during this time of year.
I tell you how my body is handling the virus, even before it hits its peak, so hopefully some more people can understand why this virus is dangerous. Why we must protect the vulnerable like myself. And even everyone for that matter.
One single covid-19 infection leaves life long health implications. We're already seeing it play out.
This virus was supposed to be far more complex than we understand. Please don't take it lightly and don't make jokes. Please take precautions when out in public and remember. The pandemic isn't over.

People talk about, "The Pandemic" when they really mean the down and following year.
It's wild as hell how you can tell folks don't give a shit about disabled people when everyone is coughing on a train while taking about, "yeah, during the pandemic"
likes it's not still going on

Last time I got covid it severely worsened some underlying chronic illnesses I had and my life will never be the same again. So many horrible things have happened to me because of those disabilities. I’m so terrified about what’s going to happen this time. I’ve been taking every precaution for four years now, and I’m fucking tired of these things happening to me because people refuse to mask. Please, please, wear a mask.

Cat in the Hat:
"The German Health Minister gave an important update on the Covid situation yesterday.
I’ve written up the section of his speech from the video below for easy reading.
It’s immensely refreshing to see a government minister warning of the harms of Covid in such a transparent way."

Prof. Karl Lauterbach
Health Minister, Germany
4 December 2023
"This second (long Covid) round table was very interesting, lasting three and a half hours. It serves as a unique forum for dialogue among scientists, researchers and those affected by long Covid, facilitating the exchange of ideas.
There are many new findings about long Covid. Not all of them are good news. One piece of not-so-good news concerns the fact that long Covid is actually still a problem for those who are newly infected. One estimate that has been put forward is that the risk of contracting long Covid now, even after vaccination, is around 3%. Now you may say, "that's not such a big risk" , but there are tens of thousands of people who are repeatedly affected in a short period of time. And so, the long Covid problem has not yet been solved.
We have also established that there really are many subgroups of long Covid and that we do not yet have a cure. And it was clearly pointed out that we are also dealing with problems here that will challenge society as a whole, because vascular diseases often occur after long Covid. Throughout Europe, we are currently seeing an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in the middle-age group - from 25 to 50. This is associated with the consequences of Covid infections.
We also very often find cognitive impairment in older people. And one participant pointed out that it may well be like the Spanish flu, where 20 years after the Spanish flu there was a significant increase in Parkinson's disease and probably also dementia.
This is something we must pay attention to, as the past infection afiects how the immune system in the brain functions, as well as the brain's blood vessels, potentially increasing the long-term risk of these major neurodegenerative diseases. This is why we need to conduct very intensive research. This research has played a major role.
What is the overall assessment of the situation now?
We have to be careful. Long Covid is not curable at the moment. We also know that over 40% of those who have several manifestations of long Covid, for example, five or more, still have symptoms after 2 years, so it doesn't seem to heal spontaneously. We also know that those whose symptoms are more pronounced at the beginning are less likely to heal.
So some of what we know from the demographics of long Covid has been confirmed, and we now know more precisely which mechanisms in the brain, but also in the blood vessels and the immune system, are responsible for this. Professor Scheibenbogan will explain this briefly later.
At this point, I can only say the following - this is particularly important to me:
First of all, long Covid is a disease that stays with us and that we cannot yet cure. And we are seeing an increasing number of cases as the waves of infection continue to affect us.
Secondly, Covid is not a cold - with a cold, you don't usually see any long-term effects. You don't see any changes in the blood vessels. You don't usually see an autoimmune disease developing. You also don't usually see neurological inflammation - these are all things that we see with long Covid. Therefore, one should not assume that Covid infection is just a common cold. It can affect brain tissue and the vascular system, and we still lack an effective treatment, making these studies crucial.
Significantly, we know that the risk of long Covid decreases when you're infected but have been vaccinated. That's why it's concerning that only 3 million people have been vaccinated with the new, adapted vaccine. That is a very bad result.
Please protect yourself from severe infections.
Please protect yourself from long Covid.
Currently, the danger posed by Covid is indeed being underestimated. Nothing is worse than infecting someone at Christmas who then becomes seriously ill and may not fully recover."

Hey loves, new COVID variant that appeared about three weeks ago, BQ 1.1 has violent vomiting and diarrhea symptoms, think dysentery. It escapes vaccines so far and is especially dangerous for people with depleted immune systems, especially cancer patients who apparently can take a drug that makes them especially sensitive. Wear a fucking N95 / FFP2 mask and wash your hands regularly.

Went to UPS today, a nice man held the door open for me as I left, and I thanked him for wearing his mask. (He was the only one I saw who was.) I think I'll start doing that.
