Note
A teen!dad jess. He has a best friend from New York (she can have a name or it can be Y/N, you can choose) (they are endgame, jess never had feelings for Rory but she has feelings for Jess, it won't go anywhere) Jess and his best friend have a kid, they co-parent (whether they are dating already or in the future is up to you) Jess gets sent to Stars Hallow, she ends up moving to stars Hallow to, to be close to Jess and so their kid can be with him too (she is emancipated, plus Jess knows she's coming because they keep in contact) if anyone reading this would like to turn this into an actual story, I'm totally down for reading it :) if you choose this request, I look forward to reading it. Thank you!!

pairings — teen dad! jess mariano x y/n
warnings — none!! (unedited tho so…)
word count — 2.9k
a/n — i’m not the biggest fan of how this turned out (feels lowk out of character even tho i typically write jess best bc i am him), but i LOVEDDDD this plot. i plan on making a part two if that’s something you guys would want!! also dad! jess is my fav (as you guys know) so to have him be bowie’s dad??? FUCKING LOVEEE.
BEING SENT TO STARS HOLLOW was worse than one would imagine. especially for jess mariano, a kid who'd been taken from his hometown and placed in a small apartment above a diner with an uncle he hardly knows. this would be enough to drive one mad, one could presume. but to make matters worse, he was leaving behind his son.
the moment liz danes found out her sixteen year old son had gotten a girl pregnant, she freaked out. as any mother would do. but liz wasn't just any mother, she was (to put it lightly) a whack-job. so she spiraled when she figured this one out. what happened when liz danes spiraled you may ask? who was there for her? her sane big brother, luke.
the practical idea seemed to be sending jess to the quaint down of stars hollow. a place where liz grew up, where she knew luke would keep an eye on him. where she also knew he couldn't cause any havoc. and his world wouldn't become corrupt like hers, being a teen parent.
the months of the pregnancy was difficult to be away. y/n was just a girl he'd met at a party, he was sick and tired of his mother's new boyfriend's hurtful words. y/n was going through something similar and they decided they'd lean on one another one night. until three weeks later when she called jess asking him to coffee, and surprising him with something much more. y/n was scared, as any pregnant sixteen year old would be. being without jess didn't help her case.
the teenage boy didn't let the separation get to them however. his nights sneaking out were spent at a phone booth in the middle of town, talking to y/n about everything and anything. his breaks at the diner were calling to ask about doctors appointments. sure, she had just been a girl he'd met at a party. but the emotional bond of a baby knitted the two together. they were scared kids, they had no one but one another. so they became much more than kids who once went to a party. they were friends.
when y/n went into labor, jess ran out of school like his life depended on it. hoping into his car and speeding back to new york. luckily making it so he could see his son born just in time. his first time meeting his son was only his fourth time seeing y/n. the fourth of many, many visits. stars hollow became less and less entertaining to him as time went on. especially after coming back almost two weeks after his son was born. the pranks, the stealing, the teasing around with this girl rory... it wasn't anything to him. he missed his son, he missed the woman who had his son. jess mariano wanted to be with his family. because for the first time in his life, he had a family. someone loved him, and he loved someone.
"1984 is the most overrated 'classic' book i've ever read," rory gilmore smiled at jess with a teasing look. now, almost a year after his son's birth, jess mariano was nearing eighteen. his adolescence was coming to an end (although it did when the stick turned pink). the toying around was still very much in his nature. hence the conversation with the good girl in a pink sweater.
"nu uh, it's a classic. you can't just hate on 1984," jess counters while standing behind the diner's countertop. the diner was slow, despite it being around the early afternoon and a sunday. which is why two teenagers were sharing false opinions like it was bible. he didn't like her — he was sure of that. ever since bowie mariano was born (guess who named him), jess's feelings had become aware. the love he felt for his son was prominent in his everyday life. unlike anything he'd ever felt before. it was hard for him to even imagine ever having feelings for someone. not when being a dad was his number one priority.
"you're just saying that," rory laughed at his words once more. her late night talks with her mother about jess seeming to not be recalled. the ones where lorelai stressed to rory what jess was going through as a teen parent, something she knew all too well. especially being away from his kid. in her eyes, he was a christopher who'd left his rory. lorelai didn't exactly want her daughter involved with that. but it was hard to resist when he kept giving rory that james dean look. matched with the leather jacket and the book references.
"when are you going to see bowie?" lorelai asked the teenage boy, attempting to remind her daughter of his priorities. jess didn't see this as a question with ulterior motives. he knew lorelai had a deep understanding of him, whether she'd like to admit it or not. "soon, hopefully."
"is y/n liking her new place?" luke questions genuinely from lorelai's side, being reminded of jess's child's mother who he'd grown fond of. "it's kinda hard to like a place where you're crashing on your friend's sofa bed." jess scoffs, being reminded of his friend's condition. when y/n had first gotten pregnant, jess was aware of the darkness in her home. especially when she freaked out to him one night. the first time they opened up to one another. she was too scared to tell her dad about the baby, knowing he'd hurt her.
less than two years later, y/n was emancipated. working a part-time job in the city. where her friends helped watch bowie when necessary. along with (hesitantly) liz, whenever jess made sure she was sober and had an okay boyfriend. it was a lonely life: just like jess's.
"that poor girl," lorelai commented with a sympathetic look making jess's stomach twist. he hated thinking about the living conditions of his family, he hated thinking of being apart from them. but when he did, he couldn't stop. which is why that night, when luke came upstairs to the apartment after closing, jess stopped him to have a serious conversation. "can i talk to you?"
luke searched his nephew's face for sincerity once he heard those words. curious if this was gonna be a 'steely dan sucks' conversation or an actual serious one. a rare option for the teenage boy. "yeah, what's up?"
there was a deep expression anguished on jess's face as he sat at the table. he was clearly unsure how to put his words, which was prominent in his eyes. "i... i can't be away from bowie anymore. i can't let y/n live in that shithole. they're my responsibility."
luke heard his nephew's words clearly. he agreed with every word, a sigh erupting when he processed the stress his teenage nephew was experiencing over this. "where are you going with this, jess?" the diner owner questioned with a calm tone. he still wanted the best for his nephew. he still wanted him to finish high school and start a worthy life. one he didn't want to be started by running off to new york and working to provide for his family. "i need to be with them one way or another. i can't be away from bowie, i can't do that to my kid. i can't be my dad."
"you're not, kid. you're nothing like jimmy, i'm telling you that right now. you would do anything to be with bowie and that proves you're better than him," luke explained before letting out a sigh and nodding his head. "you're a good guy, jess."
a conversation continued throughout the night until the two finally came to a conclusion. or at least luke did. taking matters into his own hands, he picked up the phone once his nephew hit the pillow. a hushed tone rushing into verses of explanations until it all made sense.
the next morning, jess mariano woke up like any other day. not too long after he woke up he went down to the diner to get started on work. his thanksgiving break had begun, so his monday would be spent annotating a new book for his son in between rush hours. it was when two familiar faces entered the diner that he hardly glanced up, noticing the gilmores immediately. "hey jess, how's it going?"
"well, i'm not bleeding or anything so..." jess shrugged towards the woman while he scribbled in a final note for an older bowie. rory kept her eyes on him while luke handed the two mugs of coffee. he had something in his head, especially when he kept glancing out the window every few seconds. "that's good," lorelai nodded before turning to luke.
"what are you reading now? more jane austen?" rory teased while eyeing the boy and taking a sip of her warm coffee. his eyes didn't dare look up from her while he shut the book, "uh huh." he nodded with a thin lipped smile. rory noticed the children's book in his hands and grinned, "didn't know you were that behind. that makes sense with your book taste though."
"this is bowie's, i'm just writing some stuff in the margins for him for when he learns to read," jess shrugged without noticing the sudden change in demeanor when he mentioned his son. the baby had never been to stars hollow. jess also rarely brought up his son to anyone, especially stars hollow-ers. miss patty and babette already whispered about the rebellion enough as it was. he didn't need to add to it by opening up to people who didn't care about him. "oh... that's sweet," rory forced a smile before sinking down into her seat. she felt shorter.
jess picked up the coffee to begin to refill a few cups throughout the diner. his stance was interrupted once the diner phone began to ring, luke noticed this quickly. it wasn't long before he grabbed the coffee from jess's hand and hardly offered to do refills for him instead. jess knew luke was up to something but hesitantly took the phone call, "luke's."
"nice greeting," a voice echoed on the other side making jess's infamous smirk spread across his face. y/n. "well, i thought i'd ask you to marry me. but i was worried our meat supplier was on the other line," jess teased into the phone while his hand went in his pocket. he subconsciously turned around so his back was to the rest of the diner. wanting to be alone with y/n, as if that was possible through this.
"thought so," y/n hummed with an obvious smile. "hey, bowie's missing his dad."
"is bowie's mom also missing bowie's dad?" jess asked with his typical teasing tone towards his friend. "bowie's mom may be. but she doesn't exactly want to give him the satisfaction of that. bowie's dad is very cocky," y/n says through the phone while luke spots something through the window and smiles.
the sound of the bell was a familiar one. reminding the people in the diner that someone had arrived. jess was so used to it now that he didn't bat an eye typically, but this time he glanced around his shoulder for a moment. his eyes glancing back at the figure stood infront of the door. jess's brown eyes locked on them for a second as he dropped the wired phone and bolted past the counter to them.
stood before his eyes was y/n and bowie. the eleven month old was in her arms with a pacifier between his lips. y/n wore a smile while she placed her phone in her pocket with a free hand. she was engulfed in jess's scent immediately as he threw the two into his arms. cigarettes, cheap cologne, and coffee erupting comfortably into her. "hey, watch out i have a baby."
jess ignored her words, but lightened his grip on her while taking bowie out of her arms to hold him. "bowie, hey..." his voice trailed off as he held onto his son. he was interrupted with emotion by being with his son once again. because as much as fatherhood was something he never wished upon himself, ever desired whatsoever, it had turned into the best thing that ever happened to him.
"hi kid," luke greeted the teenage girl while walking over to give her a side hug. he turned his attention towards jess who was hugging his baby with a grin he hadn't seen in awhile. "i thought about our talk last night, jess. you were right."
jess glanced over at his uncle before looking back at y/n with a smile. which shocked even him, because a smile was not something he'd done while being in stars hollow. "so..." luke's voice trailed off while he gave the floor to y/n. who took it and looked at jess, "i think bowie needs to be with his dad... and his mom."
the group shared a few looks, mixed with confusion and happiness. "i asked lorelai for a favor, y/n and bowie are gonna stay at the inn for a few weeks. until you guys can figure out a place." luke started with a nod. "you're gonna be eighteen in a few months, you're gonna graduate in a few months. i want you to do that, jess. so, i brought you some courage... as cheesy as that sounds."
jess looked between the two for a moment before sharing a nod with his uncle, as if a thank you in their own language.
"hey, i'm lorelai. it's nice to meet you i've heard so much about you. we seem to have a lot in common," lorelai interjected as she walked over and introduced herself to y/n. y/n knew her fair share of scoop of the town. her daily phone calls to jess were hardly just baby talk. she'd spent a lot of them telling him to go out with lorelai's daughter, who seemed good for him. but every-time... something was holding him back. "yeah you too, i'm y/n. thank you for everything, by the way. you really didn't have to let me."
"c'mon we're moms, we help eachother out. we can be like desperate housewives. but with no men," lorelai smiled while giving y/n's hand a squeeze. "oh! this is my bowie, rory."
"hey," y/n greeted with an awkward wave towards the other teenage girl who still seemed in shock by the situation. she forced a smile and waved, "hey."
the dispute was a lot more awkward than y/n could have hoped. but a sense of envy had taken over the both of them as they reflected on past or current relations with jess. an awkwardness that washed away quickly when y/n’s eyes locked back on jess and her son. a favorite sight of hers.
“c’mon,” jess nodded towards y/n while she took the baby out of his arms. he grabbed her bag and placed a free hand on her back, mumbling goodbyes before exiting the diner with his two. the three took the scenic tour towards the inn. bowie cracking a million smiles at the tons of birds in sight. the two teenagers reciprocating the action with shared giggles at the baby’s happiness.
the moment they entered the room, jess sat down with bowie to let y/n unpack a little bit. while the two caught up on unspoken things. “so… that was rory,” y/n says suggestively while unpacking her toiletries in the bathroom. jess was sprawled out on the bed with bowie in his arms, playing superman. he turned to her once she erupted from the bathroom and took a seat beside him. “that was rory.”
“she’s pretty,” y/n nodded with a small smile. in an attempt to be polite about jess’s possible love interest, yet he seemed hardly interested when bowie was around. “i guess,” jess shrugged before holding bowie back up in his arms. “have you asked her out yet?”
“i’m not too focused on that,” jess answered while clearly wanting the conversation to be done. y/n only smiled at the sight of the baby, gently rubbing his back. jess’s eyes locked onto her once more. watching her look at bowie with all the love made his eyes gleam. the way her smile spread with love, only made his heart beat faster happily. “thanks.”
y/n glanced over to him at his word, furrowing her eyebrows gently while she looked into his eyes. “for what?”
“for being here, i guess.” he mumbles while turning back to face bowie and bring him closer to him, the baby resting his head on jess’s chest. y/n smiled at the sight while leaning into the pillow, happily watching the two. “of course.”
so, the two laid back into the bed. smiling at the sight of their baby falling into a comforting sleep. followed by y/n minutes later, at a moment of peace. finally having someone she trusted with her baby so she could peacefully have a break. jess shut his eyes to the sound of the light breaths of both his favorite people. never having felt something so perfect once again in his life.

ok so jimmy mariano is like the worst character ever, but we do need to be grateful to him for one thing (sigh, i know) and that is jess’ name. so jess mariano is an incredible name, right? it just sounds cool. jess having his dad’s last name at all makes little sense but it does sound better on him than danes. also his first name. we know based on later events in the series that liz’ taste in names is questionable at best so we can assume jimmy picked out jess. so i guess what i’m trying to say is thanks for your one contribution to society jimmy.

Curious things about the Gilmore Girls pilot that the fandom has probably mentioned 1000 times, but that I just picked up on on rewatch:
Rory and Lane talk about Lane's parents, plural, in their first conversation (so I guess they were open to the idea of writing Mr Kim in at some point, and then never did).
Christopher is said to have his own company, an internet startup in California (a weirdly specific thing to be linked as a parallel between Christopher and Logan by the writers of S7, considering they chose to otherwise deviate from the "Logan is Rory's Christopher" narrative).
While throughout the series for as long as Rory is under 21, a point is made that her grandparents never make her an alcoholic drink on Friday night dinner, Emily does give her champagne to drink here.
As much as we usually focus on Emily as the main person alternatively freezing or poking Lorelai, in the pilot it is Richard who, not only does not contribute to trying to make the first Friday night dinner nice (by bringing the newspaper in), but also the one to attack her (calling the Independence inn a motel, bringing up Christopher and telling Rory that her being clever is probably her taking after her dad, etc) while Emily tries to de-escalate things, and then he falls asleep.
While it is true that ASP had a weird attachment to Christopher, you get the sense that, whatever her thoughts later in time, the pilot does firmly set up Javajunkie by the whole "Lorelai noticing Luke looks nice when he dresses up a bit" thing at the end of the episode.
That does not deny how much of an anomaly Jess is in the big scheme of things. Because the Lorelai triangle is Luke-Lorelai-Christopher since early in the show, and Rory's equivalent there clearly is Dean-Rory-Tristan that was to be Logan. Not that Dean ends up being like Luke, but they do try for a while (the infatuation, the bracelet and the car trying to show that he can do things with his hands, even a certain literary interest to mirror the way in which both Luke and Lorelai manage businesses...), and he definitely fits the mold of a certain CW jock high school sweetheart the heroine will end up with once she comes around because he's always been there for her (like Harvey from Sabrina the Teenage Witch). Certainly Jess morphs into a Luke-like figure, but this and his evolving closeness to Luke seem more like a nice plotline the writers stumbled upon than something that really belongs in the bare structure of the show (I cannot think of a single sort of father-son relationship that isn't tense and adversarial and ending in betrayal, of the few we have in it). Besides that, I think there is a point to the running joke of the kissing cousins for Rory and Jess after AYITL in this direction. You don't really plan for an uncle-and-nephew-marry-mother-and-daughter as endgame in anything outside a comedy that isn't a period drama. This is all to say, lovers and haters, I don't think we appreciate enough the impact Jess Mariano's existence had to break the show from the mold.

A series of scrapings and rustlings against your window woke you from your slumber. You stirred and frowned, curious about the provenance of the noises. There were often raccoons and other wild animals coming to your yard at night, but this didn't sound like a wild animal.
Half awake, you turned on the night lamp and got up to check, pulling the blinds and seeing Jess standing outside your window.
He raised an eyebrow and a smile curled at the corner of his lips, seeing you through the glass of the window. It was mid-November so it must be cold outside. Too cold to be standing in a denim jacket.
You unlocked your window to let him in. ''You could've used the door, you know,'' you said in a hushed voice as he got in, knowing your mother was asleep down the hall. If she knew you had a boy over in the middle of the night, she'd be livid.
''At this hour? I doubt your mom would've let me in.''
You rubbed your face to wake up and glanced at the alarm clock on your nightstand. "It's 2am, what are you doing here?"
''I sleepwalk at night,'' he replied simply. ''Did I ever told you?''
''Very funny.''
''You don't believe me?''
''I doubt people who sleepwalks think to put on their jacket and boots before going out.''
Jess grinned, dropping his act. ''Were you sleeping?'' he asked, taking notice of your absence of reading glasses and rumpled clothes.
You hummed as Jess cupped your face gently, caressing your cheek.
You shivered under his touch. ''Your hands are cold,'' you pointed, making you wonder if he had been out all night or if he came straight here. Jess had a habit of staying out late, reading on the bridge or around town.
''Really? I didn't notice, Captain Obvious.'' He tucked your hair behind your ear before kissing you, the taste of his lips, a little dry and chapped from the autumn weather, helping wake you up. You reached to tangle your fingers in Jess' hair, gently playing with it while you kissed.
Jess was so sweet and loving he was with you. It's like he was a completely different person. Love did him good.
He trailed his lips to your cheek and neck, making you smile. If it hadn't been this late, you would've thought he wanted his kisses to lead to something else, but they were innocent.
''Jess, stop it. We'll wake my parents.'' You pushed him away gently, but kept your hands on him.
''You said I was cold.''
''I said your hands were cold. Not your lips.''
He rested his hand on your waist, brushing over the band of your pajama bottoms. ''They're cold too. Warm me up.'' You slipped away from his hold, walking toward your door. ''Where are you going?''
You turned the small button on the door handle.
''Does that mean I'm staying for the night?''
You didn't say anything.
Jess shed his jacket and boots and moved to your bed, pulling you with him. He laid his head on your pillow and sighed, the warmth of your blankets feeling nice over his cold skin.
You turned off the night lamp, plunging your bedroom in the dark.
''My dad came to the diner tonight,'' Jess confessed after a moment.
When you said you wanted him to open about his emotions and communicate better, you didn't mean dropping bombs like that. It was great that he had told you instead of keeping everything bottled. It wasn't quite what you meant, but perhaps he didn't know how to say those things, or he was embarrassed to be vulnerable.
Jess' father was a heavy subject. All you knew was that he had abandoned Jess and his mom when he was little. He never talked about him - or rarely.
''That's why I was outside. I didn't want to go back, in case he was still there.''
''How long were you outside for?''
''A few.''
''You should've come to me. Or told Luke. I bet he would've kicked him out if you told him you don't want him there. Luke cares about you. And, he probably hates the guy too for leaving you and your mom.''
Jess stayed quiet. The conversation was over.
You snaked your arms around his middle, hugging him. It was a small gesture, but you knew it would mean a lot to Jess.
''Kiss me again,'' he whispered in the darkness.
''No. It's time for bed. We have school in the morning.''
It was almost 3am and your alarm was set for 7. You were going to be so tired tomorrow - well, today.
''Just a good night kiss. I won't be able to sleep without one.''
You gave in.

Kirsty Gilmore x Jess Mariano ✤ Run Away With Me
Showtunes Series: Run Away With Me — Romeo is calling for Juliet, ready, set, you’re ready, let’s go
When Jess climbed out the hospital window, respecting Kirsty’s desire to keep he and Lorelai apart, he made her promise to call him.  He expected her to check in, to ask where he’d gone and to let him know that she was okay.  He didn’t expect her to call him in tears, telling him that her mom had invited her dad to visit despite Kirsty begging her not to tell him.  “I can’t be here anymore,” she’d told him, the words desperate but not untrue.
When Kirsty called Jess, she’d only been planning to confirm that she was home and — mostly — okay.  She hadn’t expected to break down in tears when he’d asked how she was, to tell him that her fractured ankle had killed her shot at a Broadway role, or to confess to how desperately she wanted to be away from Christopher, away from her mother.
Neither of them had anticipated that Jess would drive up from New York, knocking on her window in the middle of the night with an offer of freedom, an invitation to get in the passenger’s seat of his car and just... leave.
And they definitely hadn’t expected that she would say yes.
wow another kirstess au i’m almost shocked

A Truman Show Star
PART FORTY-ONE OF THE DO YOU SEE HER FACE? SERIES
Pairing: Jess Mariano x Original Character (Ella Stevens)
Warnings: major discussions of parent death/death in general, plentiful pop culture references
Word Count: 5.5K
Summary: Ella goes to the little blue house for the last time.
Wringing her hands to keep herself from biting her nails off, Ella trudged up the front steps to Luke’s. Luckily, her old parking spot was open. It made her remember evenings when she’d come straight from visiting her aunt in New Britain. How safe the diner had always made her feel. A refuge from school and home alike. Her heart ached, traveling back into the past for just a moment. She couldn’t think of one second since her father’s death that she’d felt the least bit secure. Hopefully, Luke’s would help at least a little. But a strange, uneasy surreality flooded her as she entered the diner’s warmth. Life had gone on without her there. She noticed small changes to the place she had spent most of her youth in, slight differences in paint color, placement of certain mugs on the back display shelf, even new menus. At least the ‘No Cellphones’ sign hung behind the counter, as it always had. Ella doubted it would come down until Luke was long dead.
She didn’t take off her coat, and tried not to make eye contact with anyone for too long. Miss Patty was busy with her mid-morning tap class, Ella knew, and Babette wasn’t in sight at the diner either. Kirk must’ve been at work too. In fact, the diner was nearly empty, the transition between Friday breakfast and lunch creating a lull. She hopped up on a stool at the counter, right in front of the coffee machine. Luke was making a fresh pot, his back to her. He turned around once he had finished, coming to face her. For a moment, Ella felt a wave of relief at the sight of him. His baseball cap, his red flannel, his worn jeans. Luke hadn’t changed nearly at all over the course of her entire life. But then, an unwelcome thought about what she would do in the event of Luke’s death intruded her mind. Soon, she wouldn’t be able to think of anyone without picturing them six feet under.
Luke’s eyes widened at the sight of her. “Hey, Ella, are you okay?”
“Yeah,” she shrugged, fighting the urge to have any bit of emotion cross her features. “I just came to get my stuff out of the old house. Fiona’s putting it on the market pretty soon. At least, she says she is.”
“Oh,” he said, nodding. “You want something?”
Ella shook her head after a moment of thought. “No, thanks. I just wanted to stop in, since I was on my way by.”
“Alright,” Luke said, averting his eyes.
“What?” she asked, eyebrows raised in suspicion.
Luke sighed. “Jess called me this morning.”
Swallowing dryly, Ella breathed in a deep breath. “Did he?”
“Yeah.”
“He’s not coming, is he?” she asked. At some point on the drive, it had occurred to her that he might follow her to Stars Hollow, continue the conversation. But just the idea of seeing the hurt in his eyes was enough to make her stomach do a flip. She wasn’t ready to keep talking. Maybe she never would be.
A joyless smirk appeared on Luke’s face. “He told me you might ask that. No. He’s still in Philly. He just wanted to let me know you were coming, make sure you got to town safe.”
“Okay,” she said, again forcing down all her feelings, her face solemn. “I take it that’s not all he told you?”
“No,” he said, as Ella raked an anxious hand through her hair and once again tried to keep her nails away from her teeth. After a shot pause, Luke continued, trying to catch her eyes once more: “Listen, kid, it’s all gonna be okay.”
“That’s convincing,” she said with a humorless chuckle.
Again, he sighed, weary and frustrated. He readjusted his cap on his head. Eyes doing a quick scan of the diner, he found the other customers, all at tables, not listening, enjoying their food. “I know you don’t scare easy. And I know how angry being scared must make you.”
She rolled her eyes, and all of a sudden she looked just like a teenager to Luke. A teenager with no mother and not much of anything to go home to. No matter how annoyed she could make him, he cared about her more than he cared about himself.
“Don’t listen if you don’t want to, but I’ve lived a lot longer than you, Ella,” he began, curmudgeonly as ever. “Believe me, I know what’s gonna be okay and what’s not gonna be okay. And you are gonna be okay.”
“Sure,” she said, dejected but trying her best to go along with his advice session.
Luke sighed again. “Look, my mom died when I was a kid too. And then, when my dad died, I went a little bit nuts too. I spent thousands of dollars I didn’t have to open this place up. But eventually, things felt normal again. And look at me now.”
“Oh yeah,” she said, mocking. “You’re the most well-adjusted person I know.”
“Shaddup,” he scolded her affectionately. “I have no doubt in my mind that this will pass, and you’ll go back to your life just fine.”
She only nodded half-heartedly.
“Ella?”
“Yeah?” she asked, finally venturing to face him fully again.
“Jess loves you. You’re the thing he loves most in the world, as far as I can tell,” Luke said.
She swallowed harshly, looking away from the momentary eye contact she had held with him. For a second, she was worried she would cry, but she bit the inside of her cheek and focused on the pain instead of the sadness. “I know, Luke.”
At that, he decided to let it go. He’d never been the best with emotional, soul-searching chats in the first place. He smiled a bit at her in a way he hoped was reassuring. “You wanna come over for dinner tonight? Lorelai’s gonna bite my head off if I got to see you and she didn’t.”
“No, I can’t just show up like this and then eat your food,” she said immediately.
Luke only scoffed, watching as a customer began approaching the register. “You know you’re not getting out of it, kid. Dinner’s at six.”
Before she could reply, he went over to ring up some townie Ella could barely recognize. She wanted to protest further, but knew she didn’t have the energy for an argument with Luke. And, she had to admit, she couldn’t think of anything better than seeing Lorelai. For some reason, she had a deep, sorrowful longing for the Gilmore woman’s warm hugs and kooky way of approaching life, at just the mention of her name.
“Fine,” she said, as Luke came back over to grab the coffee pot and do refills.
Luke gave an affirmative grunt in response. Apparently, the conversation was over, and neither Luke nor Ella were particularly upset about that. She slung her purse back over her shoulder, hugging her peacoat around her a bit tighter as she prepared to go outside. As she passed Luke on the way out, she stopped in her tracks for a moment.
“Hey Luke?” she said.
He looked up expectantly.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he replied, voice sincere, though his face barely softened a bit.
.   .   .
The sun would soon start to set. She looked out her old window, a view of tree branches and golden clouds. The sight made her remember the day Jess had taken her to the Met, showing up at her window. And other days, when he would climb in and her small room felt like the whole world, made special for just the two of them. Swallowing harshly, she sat down on the old carpet, back against the wall and one leg crossed over the other. On the right wall, she could still see the remnants of the last mural she’d painted through the fresh white color. The realtors hadn’t taken kindly to the artwork, Fiona had said, letting Ella in, showing her the room, and promptly leaving to go stay the night at her new apartment. She’d given Ella a kiss on the cheek before going. Ella had smiled, despite the lipstick stain she knew Fiona’s bright pink lips left. She was glad Fiona was getting away, wasn’t getting stuck. Not like Ella herself was. She focused on her breathing for a moment, and she could have sworn the room still had the faint scent of lavender candles.
She’d carved out more time than necessary to pack everything up. When she’d first moved to Lane’s, she’d only left her closet full, and a few odds and ends in the attic. Clothes she would be donating, childhood drawings she would be throwing away. The photo album was the only thing she was surprised to find. She’d forgotten about it. Maybe simply because she’d wanted to forget about it. It was the only thing she hadn’t managed to fit in the three cardboard boxes which now sat in the corner of the otherwise empty room. All she had left to do was load everything in her car and drive to Lorelai and Luke’s for dinner. And she would never see the little blue house again. No matter how much she’d disliked living there, she couldn’t shake the small part of her which wasn’t ready to lose it, let it go. Even if she’d known for a while the house would soon be gone.
Before she could think better of it, she grabbed the photo album from where it sat next to the boxes. She could have squeezed it in if she tried, but she didn’t want to risk breaking it. It was of her, her life. Her family. Her mother had made one for each of her children, adding to them all the time. A project left unfinished after her death. They’d gone away with the rest of her belongings. Had she not gone up into the attic, Ella probably would have assumed it had been thrown out years earlier. But there it was.
She ran the pad of her finger over the words on the front cover gingerly. Eleanor Mary Stevens. Heaving a deep sigh, she opened it and flicked through her early years. Her mother on the day Ella was born, long blonde hair and hazel eyes, a tiny baby in her arms. Another one, with her grandmother holding her as a baby. Ella felt for a chain around her neck without noticing. She flipped through a few more pages, and had to stop when she came across the photo of the whole family on her thirteenth birthday. The second to last before her mother’s death. They were all crowded around the small kitchen, the walls behind them painted a distinctive shade of peach. Ella’s smile was wide and naive, a big cake with candles about to be blown out sitting before her on the round table. The table where she and her father had sat for weeks, drinking, after her mother was gone. Her mother had blown up balloons, decorated a birthday banner, invited Julie and her family down for a small little surprise party. Thirteen was an important one, her mother had said. A whole new phase. It was Julie who had taken the picture, urging the five of them to squish together and fit in the frame. Ella’s mother looked arguably happier than Ella did. She’d always gone all out for birthdays.
But Ella’s mind didn’t take long to wander to the hours following the picture being taken. The dinner when her father had raised his voice over something she didn’t even remember. Ella had been feeling brave and confident, newly a teenager and high off the fanfare. She’d tried to interject, calm her father down, restore the light mood. She should have known better. He didn’t hit her, didn’t lay a hand on her. He’d yelled instead. Ella could tell, though, that he’d wanted to smack her. She could recognize how red his face got, and the particular way he spit out his words through gritted teeth. He was just so angry, for no reason at all. She hadn’t let him see her cry, of course. Later, after they’d all slunk to their rooms for the night in awkward, pained silence, she’d wept into her pillow. She never knew whether her mother had heard her, or whether she’d just sensed something was wrong. Ella could still hear the soft knock on her door, her mother’s gentle voice as she walked in.
.   .   .
“Hey, apple pie,” Sophia began, shuffling into Ella’s room and closing the door silently, carefully.
Turning on her side, facing away from her mother, Ella rolled her eyes at the nickname. She’d been stuck with it for years, since she was a little girl and was obsessed with helping her mother make holiday pies. She couldn’t help but be embarrassed by it, even when it was just the two of them. It made her feel like a kid in overalls, not a girl who was just about to start eighth grade. She was practically in high school, after all.
Frowning at her daughter’s silence, Sophia came over and sat on the edge of the bed. She stroked Ella’s messy hair. Ella tried to hide her sniffling, but was unsuccessful. Her mother was the only person she ever really openly cried in front of.
“Will you look at me?” Sophia asked, feigning a happy smile. They both knew the day hadn’t been exactly what either of them wanted.
Though she huffed in frustration, Ella sat up against the wall behind her bed, hugging her knees to her chest and wiping at her cheeks and nose. Sophia’s face softened at the sight of Ella, and she gave Ella’s knee a squeeze. Despite Sophia’s valiant attempts to get her to talk, Ella didn’t meet her eyes and remained quiet. She was struggling to stop her watery hiccups.
“You know he doesn’t mean it,” Sophia said.
Ella shook her head. Her voice was raw and unstable when she spoke. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“No, you didn’t,” Sophia agreed.
“And it’s my birthday,” Ella continued, new tears beginning to roll down her cheeks.
“I know,” Sophia sighed, willing herself to remain positive. It wasn’t the first time she and Ella had had this talk. “Look, Ella, he’s had a hard life. Sometimes...he just doesn’t know how to handle it when he feels angry. He loves you so, so much.”
Scoffing harshly, Ella finally turned to face her mother. “Sometimes it’s kinda hard to tell.”
Looking down, Sophia nodded. “He’s working on it. Baby steps, okay? I’m sorry about today. Tomorrow, I know he’ll make it up to you.”
“Okay,” Ella said tiredly. Weeping had made her feel exhausted. She just wanted to go to sleep.
“Hey, I’m serious. Perk up,” Sophia said sternly, though Ella knew she was just teasing.
Ella gave a weak smile. “Okay. I’m just tired. You’re right. Today wasn’t so bad, anyway.”
Sophia’s smile grew. “Yeah. It was nice to see Aunt Julie, right?”
Tugging anxiously at the ends of her hair, Ella nodded. “Yeah. Good surprise. Thanks for the party, mom.”
“Sure thing, apple pie,” Sophia said. She kissed Ella good night and rose from the bed. Before she left, she gave Ella’s shoulder one last squeeze. She pointed to the candles alight on Ella’s desk. “Tomorrow will be better. I know it will.”
Snorting a laugh, Ella let her smile become just a bit more genuine. She repeated the saying she had heard her mother utter about a thousand times as they gardened together. “Mmhm. Lavender is for luck.”
“That’s right,” Sophia said with a chuckle, shooting Ella an affectionate wink. Then, she padded back out into the hall and shut the door behind her.
.   .   .
Startling at the sharp ringing of her cell phone breaking her from her reverie, Ella gasped slightly. She snapped back to the present, shutting the photo album and placing it back atop the nearest box. She leaned back against the wall, frazzled, not bothering to look at the caller ID before answering. Breathing out slowly, she blinked back the shine from her eyes.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Ella,” Mabel greeted her through the line.
“Oh, hi,” Ella said dumbly, not expecting her call. Not that they didn’t talk on the phone regularly, because they did, but they also usually saw each other frequently. A cold call was a bit out of the ordinary.
“Are you feeling any better?” Mabel asked, and Ella could hear her take a quick inhale. She was probably smoking. Usually, Ella would accompany Mabel on her smoke breaks when they were hanging out, so she wouldn’t have to stand out in the cold all alone, even if Ella had been resisting the habit with relative success since the night after her father died. “I just wanted to check in. Jess said you were still too sick to come to dinner tonight.”
She cleared her throat. Apparently Jess hadn’t let them in on whatever was going on. “Oh, yeah. Thanks. I’m okay. Just still on the mend, I guess. How are things over there?”
Biting the inside of her cheek, she listened as Mabel told her about the fight Chris and Matthew had gotten into over where to order takeout from. Leo had also gotten involved, apparently. Mabel laughed as she spoke, and Ella missed the sound. It was not the first time she had considered what she would be giving up if she and Jess broke up. Chris and Matthew were his business partners. She would be the one who was iced out. And she couldn’t blame any of them for it. But she was suddenly homesick not for Stars Hollow, but for Philadelphia. She missed hours spent discussing Tennesee Williams on Mabel’s couch, or playing Leo’s keyboard while he messed around with some new song and asked for her help with an accompaniment, or mocking Chris about his sweater vest obsession and receiving some witty jab in return, or debating with Matthew about the best way to achieve world peace when drunk and hopeful. Another wave of regret and sadness washed over her. She had found a new family, despite her best efforts not to.
“Alright, I’m gonna head back inside. I’m freezing my ass off out here. Do you want me to bring you up and put you on speaker so you can say hi to the guys?” Mabel asked.
“Um, no, that’s okay. I’m probably just gonna head to bed. Will you…” she began, hesitating before she continued. “Will you tell Jess I said good night? I’ll probably be asleep when he gets back.”
She couldn’t remember the last time they had spent a night apart. And she couldn’t shake her worries about him, if he had a nightmare, if he had a panic attack. Would he call her? She knew she wouldn’t be able to get back in time to help him. Concern bubbled up in her throat, but she swallowed it down. At least he was with everyone at Truncheon, having takeout. Friday nights were takeout nights, after all.
“Will do. I’ll talk to you soon, okay?” Mabel said.
Ella sighed out through her nose. “Yeah.”
“Okay, love you. Get better, please.”
Biting harder on her cheek, Ella tried to ignore the smile she could hear in Mabel’s voice. She could see exactly the expression Mabel had at that moment.
“I’ll try,” Ella said.
.   .   .
Sipping her water while Lorelai drank her red wine, Ella felt her skin buzzing with nerves. Since the remodel, the Gilmore house looked completely different to Ella. The changes hadn’t been especially big, just some new wallpaper here, a fresh decoration there. But she missed the little things only she and the other people who had been in the right place at the right time could remember. There were no longer pencil marks in the guest room’s closet wall from when Rory and Ella were practicing their signatures. Dreaming of the days when they would be signing autographs, Rory a famous journalist and Ella a famous artist. She missed the reddish stain on the kitchen ceiling from when Lorelai had dropped a bottle of ketchup at just the right angle and the condiment had spewed up in a stream. They were there in her memory, but gone in her reality. Everything had changed, and she had hardly noticed until it was all different. It was too late.
“So, Michel finally made the exterminator sign this contract he drew up, promising no mouse would ever be found on the premises again,” Lorelai said, finishing her saga of a mouse recently wreaking havoc at the Dragonfly.
Ella snorted halfheartedly. “Well, I hope for the exterminator’s sake it’s not legally binding.”
“Don’t worry. I’ve already mysteriously lost it,” Lorelai said with a conspiratorial wink.
Laughing along with her, Ella let her eyes linger on the red wine as Lorelai brought it to her lips. She didn’t want it, not really. But she knew how much better she would feel if she drank it, if she could get her thoughts to quiet down for just a little while. The thought made her grip the edge of the table momentarily, before it passed. She missed the feeling of Jess’s hand in hers, squeezing it, reassuring her. And then anger rose up inside her for missing him. Lorelai cleared her throat, breaking Ella from her daze.
“Oh, sorry,” Ella said, flushing with embarrassment.
Lorelai’s brows furrowed in concern and she sighed, preparing to finally address the elephant in the room. They hadn’t really discussed anything serious over dinner, keeping the conversation light while they ate some chicken made by Luke. He’d gone to bed a few minutes earlier, the night darkening past nine. The next day saw early morning deliveries and he had no intention of being sleep-deprived for a Saturday shift. Besides, Lorelai had formed the game plan before Ella even came over, after Luke told her why Ella was in Stars Hollow in the first place. She’d known the girl long enough, and through enough, to have an inkling of how she dealt with things.
“Sweetie?” Lorelai said.
Ella hummed, tilting her head at Lorelai in askance.
“What’s been going on with you?” Lorelai asked earnestly, a sympathetic glint in her sparkling blue eyes.
Chewing on her bottom lip for a moment, Ella looked down into her water. Then, she looked back up with tears stinging her eyes. And her words came out in a husky, rough whisper. “I don’t know.”
Lorelai nodded. “That’s okay, Ella. But you can’t ignore this. I know you want to, but I just don’t think it’s gonna work this time.”
“Why not? It’s worked so well in the past,” Ella said with a sardonic laugh, sniffing and trying to blink back her tears. She willed herself not to cry in front of Lorelai. She would not be a woman in her mid-twenties crying over a boy with her friend’s mother. Not even if the boy was the love of her life.
“But has it?” Lorelai asked doubtfully.
Taking in a deep breath, Ella swallowed thickly. “I just...I don’t want to lose him.”
“If you break up with him, I’m pretty sure you’ll lose him, sweetie,” Lorelai said, her tone hushed with gravity.
“Well, obviously, I know, but…if I have to lose him, then at least it’ll be on my own terms,” Ella continued, feeling squirmy and embarrassed speaking to Lorelai so openly. She had confided in Lorelai in her teen years, but for so long Jess had been the only one to hear about the inner workings of her mind.
Lorelai nodded, thinking.
“I’m just...I’m so fucking mad,” Ella admitted, shaking her head. She scoffed at herself, at how childish her own words sounded.
“Why?” Lorelai asked simply.
“Because when my mom died, it just ruined...it ruined everything. It killed my dad, it killed my brothers. She...it ruined everything,” Ella said.
Frustration brewed in her gut as she spoke. She didn’t want to be mad at her mother. It wasn’t her fault she had a heart condition. It wasn’t her fault she died. But, for whatever reason, Ella couldn’t help the sick rage in her stomach. If her mother hadn’t died, her father wouldn’t have started drinking again, maybe. And then he wouldn’t have crashed his car. And she wouldn’t have felt so terrified about Jess. She wouldn’t be so utterly exhausted, so drained from the grief. And it was easier to be mad at her mother than at the whole world.
“But it didn’t kill them,” Lorelai insisted. “And it didn’t kill you. You’re allowed to be happy, Ella. You are.”
Bottom lip trembling, Ella looked away from Lorelai. “No.”
Lorelai sighed heavily, hoping to make her see. “Not everything in your life is going to be a beginning and an end. You deserve a middle. Let yourself have a middle.”
Ella blew out a shaky breath, but didn’t speak.
“You told me at Thanksgiving that you had everything you wanted. And I saw it. I saw you there with Jess, with your art. You can have that. Don’t stop yourself from having it because you’re scared and you don’t think you deserve it.”
Ella’s stomach did a flip and she fiddled with her hair to keep herself from crying. Somehow, Lorelai had always been able to get to the root of her problems, to see things as they were. Maybe it was because both of them had grown up earlier than other people. Biting at her cheek, Ella let her mind drift back to Jess, to the way he made her feel. She had been in love with him for so long, she didn’t remember what it felt like not to be. To not instantly feel at home when she heard his voice, to not relax at his touch, to not feel her heart fluttering each time he smiled at her, like she was still sixteen.
Sixteen. She’d been mixed up then as she was now. And she had gotten herself through it on her own, but she would have been lying if she said Jess didn’t help. Jess showed her what it was to live with intensity again, with passion. To let herself feel the deepest things and not be afraid. Her mind wandered back to her walk over to the Gilmore house a few hours earlier, as the January sun was setting. The air was freezing, but it felt only right to walk, since she’d just been inside the little blue house for probably the last time. For old time’s sake. She’d left her key on the kitchen counter. She didn’t know the next time she would be back in Stars Hollow. She wanted to say goodbye to the town, in case she didn’t get to later. Passing over the bridge, she’d spotted two red cardinals flying around in the dusky light of the evening. One was chasing the other, and then they would switch. A lively dance. They were so vivid against the dull blanket of winter. They reminded her of the way she was with Jess, the way they were together.
Sniffing again, Ella nodded. She locked eyes with Lorelai, sincere. “Okay.”
Lorelai let a soft smile across her lips, and pressed a kiss to the top of Ella’s head as they said goodnight.
.   .   .
Driving so early in the morning, with Stevie Nicks on the radio, made her feel like she should be smoking a cigarette. Usually, it would take Ella less than four hours to make it back to Philly from Stars Hollow. But the frigid ice made the roads slick, and she was forced to go much slower than normal. Her lips were bluish with cold as she bit at her nails, the cloudy sky lightening to a murky pink. It was half past five and her eyes were heavy, but her body was wired with energy. After her chat with Lorelai, Ella had made a decent effort to actually get a good night’s sleep. She just couldn’t get Lorelai’s words out of her head, and her thoughts of Jess. She’d started up her Station Wagon just a little after midnight.
A middle was something she hadn’t considered. Truly, she hadn’t. She felt so silly. But it hadn’t occurred to her that she and Jess were just beginning. Their middle was coming. Maybe sooner than she had realized. For so long, she had been expecting the worst, even when she wasn’t. It was always there, in the back of her mind, whispering at her not to let her guard down, not to get comfortable. Not to feel love. Ella knew she couldn’t change overnight, and she felt like she was going to throw up just thinking about facing her fears. But Jess was right, as much as she hated to admit it. If she worked hard enough, she could feel better. She knew she could.
So, there was a scribbled note left on Lorelai and Luke’s fridge and she sat bleary-eyed in her driver’s seat. As she pulled up in front of the apartment building, small flurries began to fly down on her windshield, glistening in the muddled sunlight. She trudged up the stairs, trying to stay quiet in her dirty snow boots. But her feet seemed leaden in her exhaustion and she felt bad for her neighbors. She bit at the insides of her cheeks as she ascended the stairs with her suitcase in hand. Tears were welling in her eyes, and for once, she couldn’t bring herself to hold them back. She let them drip down her cheeks, which had just begun to pink up in the warmth of the building.
When she got to the door, she fumbled with her keys, her hands shaky. At first, she had the instinct to knock, before she remembered it was her own house. She didn’t know what was wrong with her. So much, she thought, and then let a bitter laugh slip from her lips. She really was exhausted. Just before she could stick her key in the lock, the door opened for her. Jess stood on the threshold, disheveled. His hair was mussed up and she could tell he hadn’t shaved in a few days. Soon, he’d have a full beard. His eyes were reddish and she could tell he had just woken up.
She swallowed dryly, dazed. She was aware she was still crying, but hardly knew why. She dropped her suitcase next to her, and her keys jangled to the ground as well. She raked both hands through her hair and sniffled.
“Hi,” she began, her voice weak and watery. “How’d you know I was here? Am I the star of the Truman Show or something?”
He shrugged, letting a sad smirk cross his face and then fade immediately. “I heard you.”
She furrowed her brows. “Well, you should’ve brought a bat or something. What if I was a murderer?”
Again, the joyless smirk. “I was in the kitchen making coffee and you laughed. I could tell...it was your laugh.”
“Oh,” she said, nodding. She scoffed self-consciously. “Yeah. I didn’t really sleep and I guess I’m kinda punch drunk. But I um...I just...had to come home.”
“You did?” he asked, keeping his voice even. If he sounded too hopeful, then he might be hopeful. And he couldn’t have that. But she’d said she would be back on Sunday, and it was only Saturday morning. Surely, that had to be a good sign.
“I did,” she said, then her face crumpled and she uttered a little whimper. She looked down at her shoes, stomach swirling with embarrassment. Then, she looked back up to face him and sniffled again. “I was just really fucking scared. I’m sorry, Jess.”
His face softened and he nodded, watching as she put her head in her hands to hide her face. Silent sobs overtook her.
“I know. I know,” he said gently, then wrapped her up in his arms.
She cried into his chest.
“It’s nothing for you to be sorry over, alright?” he said, leaning back slightly and taking her face in his hands. “It’s okay.”
“But it’s not okay!” she exclaimed, pulling away from him, speaking earnestly through her tears. “I can’t believe I said I wanted to leave! I’m such a fucking coward. We said we would always try, and I wasn’t fucking trying! And I’m just-”
“Eleanor, honey, just take a deep breath,” he said, running his hands up and down her arms in an attempt to relax her. “We can figure this out. You and me.”
“But you don’t have to-”
“Hey, Daria,” he began calmly, taking her suitcase and her keys from the floor beside her, “just come in and get some sleep. We’ll talk about it when you wake up, okay?”
She eyed him for a moment through a blurry, watery haze. “Do you promise?”
For the first time all morning, his tiny smile held the hint of something pleasant. “I promise.”

Gilmore Girls
Tumblr media
Jess Mariano
Sarcastic, intelligent, hard headed, troubled, witty, caring. Played by Milo Ventimiglia, Jess was in my opinion, the best love interest that Rory had. He was complex but also very simple in that he liked very few things: Rory, books, his uncle Luke (even when he pretended not to), and being independent.
Jess made a lot of mistakes as kids do, but he was basically punished for even the tiniest thing, by the people of Stars Hollow.
His first appearance on the show explained briefly that his dad had never been in his life & his mom was flighty & clueless. He was getting into some trouble- as kids who grow up in such situations do. His uncle Luke takes him in.
Immediately after meeting Jess Lorelai doesn’t like him. She finds him rude of course but instead of acknowledging the fact Jess had zero structure, no guidance & no one to talk to for the first 16 years of his life, she just acts like he was a criminal or something. She tells people she doesn’t like him so then her cult (sorry, townspeople of Stars Hollow) believe it too and no one even gives him a chance.
Jess picks up on this because he’s not an idiot. Since he’s not used to knowing how to deal with conflict (let alone anything else) he just became determined to ignore them & take care of himself.
When people approach him, knowing how they felt about him he gets stand-offish.
Meeting Rory he can see she was intelligent as well as beautiful & is impressed that she wasn’t a sheep like the rest of the town. So he really likes her, hoping to be with what he felt was the only tolerable person in town.
As we get to know him we realize that Jess took care of himself & gained his knowledge purely from books. He learned some life lessons from them but clearly it isn’t enough.
Luke guides him in the best way. He let Jess be himself, they argued, he gave him advice & Jess acted out out by it but he stayed. Season 3 we see he even joked around a few times with him. And when Jess was being a jerk, Luke called him on it & tried to put an end to it.
We find out that Jess was with Shane (and it’s implied about other girls) because that’s the only type of girl who will give him the time of day. But he starts to realize that Rory might like him...and when they do get together he’s actually happy.
It’s the first time we really see him happy.
Tumblr media
Jess shows progress when he starts dating Rory. He grows. He makes an effort to be more respectful of other adults, particularly Lorelai. He also shows actual interest in her friends.
When Rory was dating Dean & they had that impromptu dinner - Jess, Paris & Rory- Jess genuinely seemed interested in being nice to Paris & even potentially being a friend to her to.
He also seemed on good terms with Lane though they didn’t hang out.
Jess gets a job at the diner to help Luke out. He didn’t have to. He could have ignored Luke if asked to help. But he didn’t. Then he got a job at Walmart. He liked being able to take care of himself & get a jump on his adult life.
When he arrogantly assumes he could just write a few tests to graduate- and realizes he flunked out - he’s devastated. He knows he could easily have passed if he had just gone to class & that he royally screwed up.
Knowing he would disappoint Luke upset him. Luke’s rule was he had to go to class or he’d be kicked out. As he’s from an unstable background he probably believes Luke would actually send him away. His uncle likely would send him to New York but show up hours later to drag him back....as Luke wouldn’t let Jess ruin his life. Jess probably assumed even Luke had his limits.
Tumblr media
However, the biggest upset about not graduating high school was not being able to take Rory to prom. He knew she’d be devastated but he couldn’t deal with how she’d feel about the fact he didn’t graduate. Instead of trying to deal with it (as he’s still a troubled kid) he runs away.
Jess finds his father in California & despite the fact the man tells him repeatedly that he can’t stay with him, Jess pleads with him & ends up staying so he can get on his feet.
He really was looking to find out who he was & why he was screwed up...like he had to understand why his dad was screwed up first.
It does seem to help give him perspective & to not be so angry.
The tough love relationship with Luke though was the best thing for him & we can understand that by seeing him in later seasons. He’s mature, enlightened & has a good relationship with his uncle Luke.
Jess goes back to Stars Hollow briefly & thanks his uncle. Gives him his number (reaching out & showing he wants to be in his life). He apologizes & wants to pay him back for everything. It’s heartwarming to see.
Tumblr media
As a boyfriend Jess was obviously flawed in a few ways, particularly how jealous he’d get. If Dean was around, Jess likes to point out he was more intelligent & that he was a better intellectual equal for Rory. They also got into some fights. He tries to walk away a couple times but not always.
The difference though between his & Dean’s jealousy is that Jess never got scary angry. He did slip a few times & we saw how stupid he was about fighting but he never intentionally scared or hurt Rory.
There was a scene where he was getting handsy at the party then got upset when Rory wouldn’t sleep with him...but he had stopped himself from hurting her. It was still messed up & one of his main reasons for leaving town. He was ashamed & wanted to make sure he didn’t hurt her ever.
I think his leaving was good though. He needed to leave. For himself & for Rory. It was needed so they could both grow.
Eventually he realizes his mistakes & his feelings for Rory but it doesn’t fix what was broken. That’s one of the reasons why I love their story. He still loves her even though he gets nothing out of it. It also feels more...real.
I also love how after he professes his love, he knows it was too late & they were broken. But he doesn’t revert back to who he was because he had changed. Later we see he became a writer/poet & is getting his life together.
Tumblr media
Jess even went to Yale & asked her to runaway with him. He was being the romantic he always read about. Unfortunately it didn’t happen but the rejection helped fuel his creativity.
Rory clearly had feelings for him but she didn’t trust that he wasn’t going to do something like leaving. She tells him she loves Logan but it felt almost...premature at that point. He tries to talk sense into her because Logan was immature- even more that Jess was when he met her. Plus he didn’t like what he saw in how Rory was treated (she wasn’t put on a pedestal like everyone else in her life had done in the past).
Rory didn’t understand Logan wasn’t interested in a monogamous relationship like she was then was being petty & jealous. She used Jess to try to get back at Logan. Jess was smart enough to see through it. I felt really bad for him because she knew he loved her.
Tumblr media
Jess was hated from the start by nearly everyone in the show. A jerk, hoodlum, criminal etc...labels people gave him but he ended up as the most well rounded, evolved character of the series.
I hated how Emily was angry because of the dinner with him & Rory. But that wasn’t his fault. He was on his best behaviour. Rory pushed, pushed, pushed about his black eye. She insisted on delaying dinner even further to confront him about it. He was tight lipped (due to embarrassment) & she didn’t believe him when he said it wasn’t a fight. They argue then he ends up leaving because she pushed him away...it wasn’t intentional but he felt attacked & very uncomfortable. I’m not sure anyone else would have stayed. Lorelai wouldn’t have. She’d been know to up & leave too.
However, in the Gilmore Girls universe, everyone on the planet thought bailing on someone was charming for Lorelai & unconscionable for Jess. A double standard that always annoyed me.
Year in the Life even got Jess right though. He was a nice addition & we got to see how far he came. He gave Rory really good advice but he also was shown as mature & a good person. Though I think a quick mention of all the books he’d written would have been good...and a little tidbit or two about what else was in his life. Did he travel? Have a career? A dog? Girlfriend? I wanted more.

PART THREE
in the SINGLE DAD SERIES!
pairings — older! jess mariano x fem! reader
word count — 2.3k
summary — in which jess mariano meets a woman in a bar…
a/n — i missed writing this series 😭 anyways this was kinda boring so iM SORRY!! i wasn’t planning on including a love interest but yk. anyways pls request more from this series because i truly love it. also don’t forget that i quite literally did not reread this at all so if it sucks then. well. fuck you.
A BAR REBRANDED FROM A SANITARIUM was an odd place for a bachelorette party, right? You'd think the fact that mental patients died in such an area would affect the liveliness of the now bar. But the darkness was hidden within the red velvet carpeted booths. Ones that looked like they hadn't been changed in decades — so there was a safe chance a serial killer's ass sat with yours decades later.
A group of six women sat around a dimmed booth. Party hats and wild attire matched their adolescence-like cheers. You would have thought they were the patients by their chilling screams. The one girl who watched over the other five, with her arms crossed as she watched her little sister unpack glittery bags with candied undergarments in them. As if that made them any more tasteful...
She watched with a tired expression, not exactly hiding how uninterested the party scene was for her. They'd just spent two and a half hours at a four and a half star restaurant that her sister's soon to be sister-in-law booked them a reservation at. She had to pay for a singular breadstick. She felt like some rich dick who went to the club... much like her grandparents. The group then spent the next hour in a club, before moving next door to the bar. The bar was a sectioned off area that lacked the loud party music and dancing area. But the classy atmosphere only matched the rich-kid her sister was marrying.
Her sister was twenty-one years old marrying her college boyfriend. She couldn't help but be envious. Not because her sister was getting married or that she had a "college sweetheart". But rather the idea that her sister was given a relationship from the universe. A man willing to marry her so badly that they couldn't even wait until graduation. They had to get married mid-semester and spend their spring break as their honeymoon. At some rich family villa of his, which would soon be her sister's... you can see why she lacked excitement yeah? It was selfish. She was the first to recognize it. But her sister had never shown any interest in being wed until she was at least twenty-six. She was one of those people with the plans. The ones who carried around their planners like they'd just solved world peace.
Her sister wasn't making a mistake... or at least she didn't think so. Or it didn't seem so. Her soon to be brother-in-law was a respectful guy. But he lacked any awareness in how the girls had grown up. They didn't have a house filled to the brim with white tiling and gold accent pieces. He didn't understand how she spent her whole high school career working her ass off to help her mom pay for the cost of living of their family. Maybe that was a deal breaker for her... but not her sister.
So, she stand here now twirling her glass as she watches her sister smiley scold her college roommates for gifting her a set of lingerie. Sometimes she wishes she'd gone to college. But this was not one of those times. She'd excused herself to walk over to the bar once more, looking for away to espace from the 'bride babe' headbands.
The bar wasn't exactly crowded but she lacked the room to comfortably move. But the group of men taking up the space, moved swiftly as she approached. Her bodycon dress seemed like a simple motivation. One she was not giving into. "Another, please, thanks." She told the bartender who shot her a nod and added it to his mental list. The group of young men (who acted like they'd never account for that title) slowly filed away as some approached her group. She didn't waste any time leaning against the bar as she waited. Desperately wanting to down a shot.
To her direct right, a man balancing a whiskey sour. He was tilting it as he glanced up at her, noticing her eyes locked on the drink being made. She was drop-dead gorgeous, which caught his attention like no other. He knew he shouldn't even be thinking that when a woman was supposed to be the last thing on his mind. But everything about her caught his attention. Which he'd never been good at comprehending, wanting to seem like such a tough guy. When in reality, he had a heart of surprise.
"Old fashioned?" He asked aloud when he noticed the bartender handing her the drink. Her eyes didn't even dart toward him as she remained where she stood, taking a sip of her drink. "I'm partial with a good bourbon myself," He spoke curiously. As if wondering if she'd take the bait. Her eyes finally caught his as she glanced in his direction, taking a sip of her drink without leaving his eyesight.
Boom.
He watched playfully with deep eye contact, his finger tapping his drink. She placed her drink back down on the counter and remained in the same spot. "Meeting someone?" Jess asked. He didn't want the cliche bar meet like he'd read in so many of his books. But this would be a one-time thing, right? If she even obliged. "More like hiding from someone." She spoke as she leaned onto the counter her gaze adverted to watch the bartender work. Jess didn't take his eyes off of her as he found them roaming, interested in what he was seeing. "Your ex? Bonnie or Clyde?"
She looked back over at him for that one giving him a look. He only watched her with a smirk falling on his lips, he liked her. "The sorority sisters," She matched his energy right back as she tiredly glanced over at the group of girls who hardly noticed her disappearance. They were now loudly laughing over a severely unfunny joke. Something about some girl in their dorm buying her boyfriend $500 pants that were ruined in a day. A humorous idea, lacking a reason for a 360 laughing circle.
"They aren't no Helen Keller," One two many drinks led to this disastrous joke. Her eyes squint slightly at the poor joke, holding in a laugh. He, too, had to wince. "I am drunk." No, you're not, Jess. You just suck at picking up girls. Probably because your only influence is trapped within book pages.
"Okay be honest, how bad am I doing here?" He asked aloud something he'd typically never do without a few drinks in his system.  She bite down on her bottom lip as she pretended to think. "You're digging yourself a hole, pal. A ditch." He didn't waste any time nodding fairly as he finally lost his eye-sight glancing down at the bar before looking back at her. Jess crossed his arms and leaned onto the counter. She admired his approach which was shown when she took a seat beside him, her knees a few inches away from being pressed against the side of his thigh. Her attention was diverted to a book beside his drink. "On The Road?"
The man glanced down at his choice of literature before looking back over at the girl seemingly impressed. He watched her glance back over at her group which he could already tell was not her scene. "So what are you doing here?" Her lips finally revealed, her eyes still trapped on his while he raised his drink to his mouth. A sip was a dry term for what he took as he finally lowered his beverage revealing a smirk that had fallen on his lips. "Who's your favorite Beatle?"
The woman's face remained the same, noticing the direct change the man-made in the conversation. "None," She quipped with a straight look like she was inspecting him for something. He was quick to understand she was a bright one. Her face, like her name, and her starry eyes were bright and memorable -- almost so that he had to examine her for flaws. Her cheeks only added to her appeal so he moved his attention to her messy hair which had clearly been an asset he was interested in. So, she was perfect like that. Transcendent if you will. "Everyone has a favorite Beatle, 'ya got Ringo then Le-"
"I don't." She cut him off like her duty. As if she owed him the power of not having to repeat four known names. He licked his lips at this with a firm nod eyes darting across the room. Her thoughts remained on his intentions. He didn't seem like a bastard or anything... his looks overpowered the rights for that. "Y'know, lad, if you just told me what was on your mind we could move on from this insatiable eye contact."
Jess nodded at her words with her head falling on her hand. "My girl... my daughter," He corrected when he realized how his choice of words could further affect their conversation. "Her Mom suddenly came into her life. Now Alice, my daughter, is all over her. When she wasn't there the past fourteen years of her life... so for all of it." He spoke aloud, despite if whether she was listening or not. "The woman's a madman... a hookup when I was seventeen and miserable over a breakup and my Dad. It's unfair."
The woman listened to every single word intently. Her bad night seemed glorious at this moment as she watched him huff and turn toward her, half expecting her to dart at the mention of his messy situation. "That... sucks. I mean that really fucking sucks." She told him with sincerity ghosting her voice. Her words were something he needed to hear. Jess was finally grateful he opened up for once in his thirty-one years of living. "I'm Y/N by the way... if I know something personal about you, it's only fair you know my name."
"Jess," He responded while sticking out his hand with a thin-lipped smile. She matched his expression while shaking his hand firmly. The two pulled away hesitantly as Jess seemed to spark back into his almost-cocky demeanor. "So, tell me why you're sat over here with me. It's only fair, y'know." He cocked with a tilt of his head. Y/N was quick to nod at his words as she messed with her hair. "You looked really depressing, miserable actually."
He chuckled at her words as a genuine smile took over his face. "Haven't we learned to not beat around it with one another... tell me. I'm listening."
"It's dumb." She seriously told him before sighing, knowing he wouldn't give up. "The guy my sister, the one with the candy panties, is marrying is just... not for her. And if I try and tell her she gets pissed off at me. So it's safe to say I'm not exactly in the mardi gras mood here." Y/N looked over at the group once more.  Jess was quick to react despite the lack of emotion shown on his face. His features mute. "She looks like a kid."
"She is," She agreed before sighing. "Well, she's twenty-one. But that's still a baby— I mean come on, when I was twenty-one I would have laughed in my boyfriend's face if he proposed to me. She has her whole life ahead of her and I don't know..."
"If my daughter came home from college and told me she was engaged I would go Hulk Hogan on the guy's ass." Jess reassured her of her sanity with his words. Somehow two emotion-lacking people shared their pressures in sensibility prose. Which both recognized and swore off by their drinks. Which was no excuse.
His words were almost unheard as the bachelorette party began to cheer once more, followed by the sound of the club next door. Jess pressed his lips together before letting out a puff of air. "Let's get out of here," He told her... although his words were a prominent question that he was awaiting her answer for. Her drink balanced in her hands at his words with an unreadable expression. "Bold move."
"Life's too short to be shy," He shrugged with his confident look and his eyes practically undressing her mind. Her eyes remained lost in his for a moment before a dry chuckle escaped her lips. "Trust me, I wanna. But as older sister... I gotta watch out for those annoying girls. Emphasis on annoying.”
"Responsible and admirable," He spoke with a nod while taking the final sip of his drink. "But unnecessary... we'll go somewhere quiet for a bit. I swear you'll be back here in an hour and a half." He was persistent which she easily saw coming. "Yeah? And where's that?"
"I own a publishing company. We have this bookstore downstairs that's closed... quieter than a goddamn J.K. Rowling lovefest." Jess started continuing to attempt to charm her enough for her to stay as his company. "We can have a coffee and talk nonsense. I can promise you you'll be back here by midnight because I need to get home to my kid by midnight. My Uncle won't stay up any later."
His demeanor changed while he attempted to convince her. He was full of truth and warmth while he anticipated her next move. Which he so desperately hoped would be spending the rest of the evening with him. "Is the 'I own a company' thing supposed to impress me?" She hinted at with a gentle smirk, one he matched instantly. "You haven't seen anything yet."
"And why should I come with you?" She was just playing with him now. "First of all, you wanna get the hell outta here. Second of all, you wanna have some fun which I'm willing to give you. It's your game."
"Let's go," She stood up with him quickly following as he threw on his jacket and walked behind her. Jess's arm threw around her, they walked closely together. And it was safe to say... Jess and his parental problems were just an afterthought for about an hour and twenty-nine minutes.

You know, with all the fan fictions on this site I think it’s crazy that no one has written something about Jess Mariano’s long lost tv series. Like what happened to him after he left Stars Hollow? Does he still talk to his dad? Why did he move to Philly?

some thoughts on jess & rory (but mostly jess)
Can I just say that Jess Mariano has possibly THE most believable and satisfying character arc on Gilmore Girls? He starts out as, quite frankly, an abrasive jerk. He’s surly, unpleasant, and has no earthly idea how to handle his emotions- or other people’s, for that matter. But we as the audience are understanding to an extent, because 1) we experience something of his softer, better side through his interactions with Rory and 2) we know a lifetime full of turmoil (absentee dad, drug-addled mom struggling to get clean, revolving door of would-be stepfathers) went a long way towards making him in to the difficult character that he is.
We know there’s a sweet, intelligent guy buried beneath Jess’s rat’s nest of issues. Will we ever get to see that guy survive and thrive, though? That’s the question haunting his arc from the get-go. In early seasons, the answer appears to be a definitive “not right now,” which imo makes him a very frustrating character. He has so much potential! And yet he’s so failing to live up to it, instead squandering the (many, generous) chances he’s offered and leaning into his issues.
The last we see of him as Rory’s boyfriend, Jess has backed himself into a corner and as a result is angry, scared, and completely at a loss as to how he should deal with the situation. He’s unwilling to work with Luke, unable to communicate with Rory (or anybody, let’s be real). Is it surprising that, upon burning all his nearest bridges, the kid who is told to get lost when he screws up too badly, the kid whose instinctive response to difficult situations and emotions is to shut himself down and other people out- is it really surprising that he chooses to bail?
Not surprising, no- but not excusable, either. Jess will never be a good guy unless he learns to deal with his baggage, mountainous though it may be. He’s at the age where it’s high time for him to start. We, like Rory, hope that his cruelly impromptu exodus will end up being a successful journey to find himself. And the best part about Jess is that it is! But to the show’s credit, it isn’t presented as something instant or easy, so that we can readily condone the horrible thing he did to Rory and to Luke.
We see the ways in which he hurt the two of them, and we see that he’s still an emotionally-stunted jerk in his next few appearances on the show, albeit one who has awakened to the fact and is starting to do something about it. Jess ambushes Rory out of nowhere, loudly proclaiming his feelings for her in one of the most selfish, abrasive ways possible- but he’s at least sorting through his emotions rather than packing them away, making an effort to communicate rather than simply shutting down. He snarls at Luke when trying to steal back his car, and later grouches his way back to Star Hollow for his mother’s wedding- but he’s at least opening his hermetically-sealed heart a crack to the people who love him most. Jess is still not a good guy, by any stretch of the imagination, but he is clawing his way towards goodness, even if he’s still obviously terrible at it.
By the time he makes his final appearances in the series, Jess has truly become a good guy. Is he a perfect guy? No, not by a long stretch. But he makes an effort to resist Logan’s hostile needling, even if he succumbs to bitter barbs in the end; he calls Rory out on her actions at a time where she’s desperately in need of it, although in an unnecessarily aggressive fashion that’s admittedly driven by Logan’s aforementioned behavior, and even has the presence of mind to soften his tone when he registers how upset she is. And when he realizes Rory is using him to get back at Logan during Truncheon Books' open house, his last moment in the original series, he keeps his (completely justified!) anger in check to bid her a bittersweet farewell. Not to mention his actions earlier in the same episode, where he embraces Luke and Luke's daughter and pays back his uncle in heartfelt appreciation of all Luke did for him.
Jess Mariano begins his time on Gilmore Girls as a bitter, angry young man incapable of communicating his feelings or participating in healthy relationships. He ends it having done a complete 180, not without difficulty, not without effort, but with the appropriate amount of fits and starts it takes to grow into the upstanding, even admirable character he remains in the revival. What's so interesting to me is that Rory Gilmore's arc, the arc of the girl who is his love interest and catalyst for his own transformation, is very nearly his arc in reverse.
While Jess drags his own self kicking and screaming to the top in terms of personal and professional growth over the course of Gilmore Girls, Rory spends that time sinking lower and lower. The girl who once determinedly stuck to the course of academic success in spite of hostile high school classmates and a rocky start, grades-wise; who famously turned a deliberately dull assignment about pavement into a page-turner; who climbs onto her ex-boyfriend's roof to apologize for her bad behavior during their relationship- where is this girl by Season 6, let alone the revival? She's certainly not the girl we're seeing on screen.
That girl is completely different. She's stolen a yacht and dropped out of Yale after receiving possibly the most nicely-delivered, well-meaning critique around; embarked on an affair with a married ex; and attempted to cheat on a later boyfriend out of revenge. Her self-absorption, inability to rise to the challenge, and penchant to carelessly trample over other people's hearts is only more acute in the revival. All of the drive and compassion that made young Rory so lovable to audiences and to Jess are all but gone from her character by the time we see her last- coincidentally (or not), by the time we witness Jess demonstrating those traits in spades.
I think we're meant to see this as a chance for Jess to return the favor, to inspire Rory to grow in goodness as she once inspired him. I also think we're supposed to view this development in a positive light. But given that Jess's underlying issues arose from a lifetime of abuse and neglect, whereas Rory's arose largely from years of being coddled and spoiled, I can't help but feel the situation is more than a little unfair to Jess.
And yet: "There is no justice in love, no proportion in it, and there need not be, because in any specific instance it is only a glimpse or a parable of an embracing, incomprehensible reality. It makes no sense at all because it is the eternal breaking in on the temporal. So how would it subordinate itself to cause or consequence?" (Marilynne Robinson, Gilead)

top 10 L/L fics!!
OK, I am going to amend this to my top GG fics overall since @savvyliterate also asked.
I can be pretty picky with fanfiction. I don’t like angst that wasn’t in the show (didn’t ASP give us enough angst for a lifetime?) and I can be really touchy with the way Luke is handled, especially around the time of Partings. I’ve read my share of “well, he deserved it” fics and they really pissed me off. For that same reason, I almost never read fics that were written when the original series was going on. I also can get kind of antsy about fics where Lorelai angsts out about not being married because as we all know after seeing the revival, she went in the opposite direction for a long time. (But hey, how could we know that, right?)
OK, that said, here are my favorites
Holidays and Happenstance by enserio - This is a Lit fic that’s based on the interactions Rory and Jess have at various family happenings between 2007 and the revival. So far there are four sections and we’re up to 2009. I kept trying out Rory-centered fics for a while and couldn’t find any I really liked, so I was really glad to enjoy this one as much as I did. It’s very well done and there is some quality shade thrown at ASP. Though if you already crush on Jess Mariano, the third chapter may put you into overdrive.
Waltzing With Digger by @dollsome-does-tumblr - The crackship you never knew you wanted. Christopher and Digger become a couple and for some reason it works. I think we are all better served if Christopher finds something to occupy his time, anyway.
The Stars Hollow Wi Fi War by @savvyliterate - Finally, Jess’s mysterious comment about Luke not giving him the wi fi password for six months in AYITL is explained! This is a fun fic with lots of townie interaction, plenty of cute L/L moments and excellent use of Jess as a supporting character.
what are you afraid of, making it better? by @dollsome-does-tumblr - This an AU fic where instead of Emily accepting it when Lorelai tells her the wedding isn’t happening in 7.21, she demands to fix things. This was the first AU fic I read and it kind of opened my eyes to the other stuff that was out there, since I usually prefer stuff that doesn’t stray too far outside of canon. This really was an improvement on the utter crapfest the show forced on us, and it’s 100% what should have happened instead of what we got. Plus, Anna Nardini and Emily have a bitch-off that is simply glorious.
Reconciling by HandfulofBarbie - There are a ton of fics out there where Luke and Lorelai talk out the issues regarding April and Christopher that led to their break-up, finally come to peace with it, and get married and have babies approximately 5 minutes later. This is by far the best of them, and it does make me a little wistful things didn’t exactly work out this way.
Seven Weeks by mags68 - This fic has almost mythical status in the fanfiction world, and it deserves it! It stays fairly close to canon, with the slight caveat that Luke and Lorelai did end up seeing plenty of each other while he was stuck in Maine. High quality smut here.
The Heart So Hollow by @savvyliterate - This is an AU where Luke’s never opens because Luke is a hotshot baseball player instead. He hires Lorelai to keep Taylor’s grubby paws off of his dad’s hardware store (thus financing Rory’s Chilton tuition) and much bickering and flirting ensues. It’s very fun and luckily he’s still a down home culinary god, so we’ll see what happens.
I Will Always Love You and Thanks for Christmas by @meags09 - These are my favorites in a series of song fics that take place at various points in the series. Thanks For Christmas is the best Luke centric fic I think I’ve ever read, especially since it takes place during the much-undervalued Forgiveness and Stuff.
Lorelai In Wonderland by @meags09 - Lorelai wakes up mid season 5 with no memory of the last two years. Cute twist at the end, and Luke is definitely swoon-worthy in this one.
I Know We Only Get Better by Valhalla and The First Nine Years Of Marriage (Before Marriage) by Bimadabomi - These two fics are a series of one-shots that try to fill in the gaps in the L/L relationship between the series finale and the revival. I think they both do an excellent job of laying out why exactly their relationship developed the way that it did.
Good At Dating and Defining All In aren’t included in here because I haven’t finished them. Maybe they eventually will be.
Fics that have not yet been written but maybe need to be:
I’d kind of like a fic that goes into detail on the April/Christopher stuff that so derailed L/L during the original series and yet still has them deciding on the relationship status that was established in the revival. I’d like something a little different than the immediate marriage-and-kids resolution that we know now didn’t happen.
I’d also like a fic in the speculation based on this thread that the real reason Jess and Rory hadn’t seen each other in the four years before AYITL is because something sexual happened between them. Make it happen, people. Bonus points if Lorelai makes Deliverance jokes.

GG: Repeating Histories
After watching both Gilmore Girls, and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, I came up with a theory that might just be accurate. Before you judge my conclusions, just think about it.
WARNING: SPOILER ALERTS
Rory wants to be like her mother.
During Rory’s Chilton Graduation, she says “As she guided me through these incredible eighteen years, I don’t know if she ever realized that the person I most wanted to be was her.” Personally, I believe this was a foreshadow to Rory’s pregnancy in A Year in the Life. Similar to her mother, Rory is witty, beautiful, and romantically indecisive. Rory has closely analyzed her mother’s decisions, and mimicked them in one way or another. Specifically, Rory has analyzed her mother’s romances, and unknowingly copied them.
Logan Huntzberger & Christopher Hayden
History Lesson: Christopher and Lorelai are Rory’s parents, who have had a roller coaster of romantic affairs. At first they were high school sweethearts who neglected to use a condom, and after Christopher’s first proposal, they broke up. Christopher then became the dead-beat dad who was only seen during holidays, or spontaneous visits to Stars Hollow. They almost got back together during Sookie’s Wedding, but knocked up his then girlfriend Sherry. Christopher came back into Rory’s life when he had gotten richer. Christopher then became a one night stand that lead to a brief marriage and quick divorce. ( I hate Christopher and Logan with a passion tbh)
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Logan is Christopher’s parallel. Just like Christopher and Lorelai, both pairs are drawn together various times.  Both Baby Daddies were afraid of commitment until the Gilmore Girls whipped them into shape hence their premature proposals. Both come from privileged families, and played the ‘rich bad boy with a good heart character’. When Logan meets Christopher, they compare all the schools that they’ve been expelled from. A little known fact, both Christopher and Logan were adored by Emily & Richard, and were used in many of Emily’s schemes in the girls’ love lives. I think Rory may have realized their many parallels when she visited her father during the revival, knowing that Logan would run away from this commitment. If A Year in the Life gets another season, there has to be more in the cards for Logan & Rory.
Dean Forester & Max Medina
The first set of lovers for the Gilmore Girls, these men broke down the walls the Gilmore Girls had put up. (Quick History Lesson: Max and Lorelai were engaged before breaking up, and then dating briefly after they broke up. Dean and Rory dated for about two years during their high school days, and then briefly during Rory’s first year at Yale.) All in all, both relationships ended as a result of them growing apart. Both viewers and characters knew that Max and Dean were not permanent fixes to the growing needs of maintaining a Gilmore Girl. To be completely frank, I thought that Dean and Max’s characters were to simple to be endgame for Rory and Lorelai.
Luke Danes & Jess Mariano
History Lesson: Luke Danes was the longtime best of Lorelai, father figure to Rory, and Lorelai’s endgame. Luke and Lorelai dated for about a year, until Lorelai proposed. The couple was engaged for lightyears, as a result of Luke’s daughter popping up. They broke up as a result of Lorelai’s affair with Christopher, and reconciled during the series finale. The couple gets hitched during the last chapter of A Year in the Life. Jess and Rory were quick enemies once Jess appeared, but their hatred grew into a flirty friendship after sharing a couple tutoring sessions together. The couple shared their first kiss at Sookie’s wedding while she was dating Dean, and got together many weeks later. The two dated during the entirety of Rory’s senior year at Chilton, but then abandoned her shortly before her graduation. When he re-appeared during Rory’s Yale days, he confessed his love to her and offered to run away with her for the summer. Rory declined, and continued her affair with the married Dean.
Geez, that was a mouthful.
Luke and Jess both played the ‘small town hottie’ character, and waited patiently for their Gilmore Girl. Both men have a temper, and complicated relationships with their families. Both are stubborn, and can never seem to shake their love for the Gilmore Girls. Jess and Luke are in love with the girls for the majority of the series, and during A Year in the Life. I personally think that Jess will eventually be Rory’s husband if my parallels are correct.
Repeating History
In conclusion, Rory replicated her mother’s love life pretty closely. One thing hasn’t been determined, the love life that will follow once Rory’s baby is born. These are only observations and predictions.
