Ever since I first found out he was specifically down on this performance, I've been bummed about it because the film remains my overall favourite of his movies.

Although I've been bingeing interviews lately and it seems like he was just massively down on and dispirited about his entire acting career in 2006 when he said this, so maybe he'd look at it differently now. I know he was in a bad place at the time, but I'm sad how depressed he seemed. He offered to reimburse Henry Rollins for having seen Walking Tall and like... that movie is fine, honey. It's crap, but it's serviceable standard Hollywood action crap and he is one of the better things about it. He's funny and natural and helps a lot to carry the film by single-handedly creating one (1) believable, dynamic relationship in it, which it badly needed since the Rock is fun to watch but can't act and never has chemistry with anyone. When Rock movies work it's because he has co-stars who can bounce off him so well you can't tell he's immobile. Anyway.

Like I was blathering about in my post about his career, a lot of the reason I like Grand Theft Parsons or think that it works well is that this is one of the few times Knoxville was cast perfectly, in a part which instantly makes sense with him in it, and by someone who clearly understood him as a screen presence. Kaufman is a shady character, but we're meant to love him and see him as basically good. He's maybe an anti-hero at best in his life in general according to the film, but his intentions in this story are purely noble. It's a wild stunt anecdote on the surface that's actually a touching statement about brotherhood and loyalty; there's a lot of warmth underlying the comedy. As our hero, Kaufman is a messy guy using cheek and charm to con people for a questionable but good-hearted cause.

Which, you know, right in the wheelhouse of what Johnny is great at. The film is not working against his charisma or asking the audience to buy an image of him they're not seeing, it's using his magnetism to sell the character. Seeming miscellaneously dodgy but very likeable, bullshitting his way both into and out of trouble with affected confidence, drifting through bizarre adventures with a laissez-faire attitude, and reacting to hysterics with wry sarcasm are all totally natural on him. He excels at this tone, he's in his element. Rough edges with a heart of gold is an archetype that fits him like a glove. Playing a jack of all trades and a savvy underachiever who seems like he could have conquered the world if he would just get his shit together also gels perfectly with the gung-ho, half-cocked energy he always gives off.

He also has a quality of slight world-weariness as Kaufman which gives proceedings a pathos that really brings the movie together as the lowkey and ultimately very sentimental black comedy that it is. There's a subtle sweetness to his performance that allows you to believe in the spiritual purity of this insane mission. I fully think it wouldn't have come out nearly as well with Hugh Jackman, whom he replaced last minute. It's no masterpiece, it could certainly have stood to develop its characters a lot more and vastly tighten up its pacing, but I like it a lot. It imparts the warm nostalgia of memory even though it's set before I was born.

#trivia I enjoy: the jacket he's wearing is the real Phil Kaufman's real jacket worn during the actual events depicted in the film #which explains why it's too small bc Johnny is about a foot taller than the real guy #(who has a cameo at the end of the film)#I just like knowing that idk #johnny knoxville #grand theft parsons #I just typed a whole essay in these tags about why he's better as a lead and why he wasn't cast as one more often #and tumblr fucking ate it I'm so upset right now #punchline: literally the only times he was cast a romantic figure or a figure of desire was in films directed by women and this says it all #unless you count A Dirty Shame which I don't and also John Waters is not typical and should not be included in the sample #it is a tragedy and a crime he was never in a romcom as the lead guy #they put fucking Dane Cook in a romcom!#this & the Ringer are his only lead roles (Daltry Calhoun he is not the lead- June is- but that was also good casting and good use of him)#but yeah all those profiles about why is this incredibly handsome charismatic man out endangering his life and getting covered in sick?#he should be a movie star!#and then he became a movie star and they were like 'we can't cast him as the object of desire he's the gross dangerous wacky guy'#something something leading man masculinity under threat bc of 'humiliation' stigma something somethig this is why they don't know he's hot #the woman who directed Daltry Calhoun and the woman who directed Rosy understand that he is hot #men acknowledge that he is handsome but do not understand that he is hot #and this masculinity shit is the real stigma from jackass that held him back not not being taken seriously as an actor #anyway I don't know what the point of this post is- I lost it somewhere in my struggle to get the video clip working #it probably should have been about how he is in fact much better as a lead than as a sidekick #he actually has a kind of gravitas and a compelling quiet to his presence that works way better in lead roles #there's a stillness to him on screen that's typical of classic leading men #he feels slightly out of place in funny sidekick roles #and he's consigned to them mostly for bullshit reasons men should explore with their therapists

Daltry Calhoun

CAPÍTULO SESSENTA E DOIS(ÚLTIMO CAPÍTULO)

Era começo da primavera em Ducktown. Faltando poucos dias para o casamento, um casal vai para a casa de Lucy e ao tocar a campainha, a empregada se aproxima, abre a porta, falando:

— Bom dia, podem entrar. Vocês desejam alguma coisa?

— Queremos ver a Lucy, ela está?

— Sim, quem são vocês?

— Queremos que ela mesma vê a gente, diga que é uma surpresa.

— Tudo bem, vou avisar para ela, venham comigo para a sala de estar.

Depois de deixar os dois na sala, a empregada vai para o escritório de Lucy e fala:

— Lucy, tem duas pessoas que querem te ver e parece ser uma surpresa.

— Eles não disseram quem são?

— Não senhora.

— Digam a eles que já estou indo.

— Está bem, com licença.

Na sala de estar, a empregada avisa:

— Pessoal, a Lucy já está descendo.

— Obrigada.

Lucy desce as escadas, vê o casal e diz:

— Bom dia, o que vocês desejam?

Os dois se viraram e ela percebe que são os seus pais, andando um pouco mais rápido, Lucy diz:

— Mãe, pai, que surpresa vocês por aqui.

Jolie, mãe da Lucy a abraça:

— Como você está?

Lucy depois abraçando o pai James:

— Está tudo bem, tudo muito bem, pensei que vocês estavam na Itália ainda. Eu mandei o convite de casamento, ainda falta uma semana para o casório.

— Filha, nós estávamos lá sim, mas estamos aqui para te contar uma novidade.

— Novidade? Me conta logo.

Jolie pega na mão da filha:

— Filha, nós vamos morar em Ducktown depois de tantos anos. Vamos estar perto de você sempre.

Lucy fica surpresa com a notícia e com os olhos cheio de lágrimas, abraça os dois:

— Eu nem acredito, parece que é um sonho, vocês juntos comigo, finalmente, estou tão feliz.

— A gente também filha.

Na casa de Daltry, ele recebeu também a visita dos seus pais que vão morar em Shinetown para ficar mais perto do filho.

Mandy por sua vez, se formou em publicidade e agora vai passar um tempo com o pai e em breve vai trabalhar em uma agência em Nova River.

O casamento foi planejado na seguinte forma: são poucos convidados, apenas 80 pessoas, os arranjos são simples, eles decidiram que não queriam muito luxo, apenas algo simbólico para comemorar.

Faltando dois dias para o casamento na igreja, o casal foi para o cartório oficializar a união. As testemunhas foram os amigos mais próximos do casal: Joe o mordomo e também amigo e Santiago, melhor amiga de Lucy. Após assinarem o papel, o juiz definiu os sobrenomes de Daltry Calhoun Charles e Lucy Mary Charles Calhoun.

Após de sair do cartório, o casal organizou um almoço para a família e amigos mais próximos, em certo momento, Daltry se levanta da mesa e começa a falar:

— Senhoras e senhores, eu quero um pouco da atenção de vocês.

Todos ficam em silêncio e olham para o Daltry.

— Então, como vocês sabem, muita coisa mudou por aqui, eu nunca imaginei conseguir tanta coisa por pouco tempo, é uma honra de estar na minha terra natal e fazer tudo o que eu tinha planejado quando cheguei. Essa cidade nunca mais será a mesma, estamos crescendo e vamos crescer cada vez mais, é a nossa meta. VIVA DUCKTOWN!

Todos os convidados levantam os seus copos e falam:

— VIVA!

Daltry continua:

— Mas hoje também é um dia muito importante para mim. Hoje sou oficialmente casado com a mulher que eu tanto amo, Lucy Mary.

Todos começam a aplaudir e Lucy que está no lado dele sorri e se levanta. Daltry fala:

— Lucy, você me mostrou tantas coisas boas, você é das poucas que me entende tão bem, conhecemos há tanto tempo e a gente já se deu bem logo de cara. Naquele momento eu já sabia que eu estava apaixonado pela pessoa certa, obrigada por tudo meu amor.

Lucy abraça Daltry e dá um beijo em sua bochecha e depois começa a falar:

— Obrigada Daltry. Hoje sou uma mulher realizada estando ao seu lado e hoje tenho a certeza que você é o meu grande amor e prometo que eu nunca irei te deixar e vou te apoiar em todos os momentos, obrigada por me amar Daltry.

Todos batem palmas e Santiago se levanta, pega o seu copo e diz com voz alta:

— VIVA OS CASADOS!

— VIVA!

Daltry fala:

— Mas eu não posso esquecer de algumas coisas, uma delas é a Cindy, mãe da minha filha, apesar das coisas que ela fez comigo e com outras pessoas, saibam que eu a perdoei por tudo. Ela sofreu muito para cuidar da minha filha e sempre vou agradecer pelos cuidados que fez durante o crescimento da Mandy. E espero que ela saiba que nós a amamos e estamos com muitas saudades. Mandy minha filha, saiba que estou muito orgulhoso de você, sou muito feliz em saber que sou um pai de uma menina tão incrível, minha futura publicitária, meu amor maior, agora estarei sempre ao seu lado e saiba que irei te amar como a sua mãe te amou, nunca estará sozinha, estarei sempre contigo, te amo muito. Um brinde para a Cindy e Mandy.

Todos se levantam e sobem os copos e depois aplaudem novamente.

— Agora vamos comemorar porque o casamento religioso está chegando.

Faltando um dia para o casamento, Mandy vai para Nova River visitar a sua avó na prisão. Lá ela vê a avó e diz:

— Vó? Sou eu a sua neta, Mandy.

Joyce não era mais como antes, mais envelhecida, com os cabelos brancos se aproxima da neta e diz:

— Meu amor, você está aqui. Estou tão por você estar aqui. Cadê a minha filha?

Mandy pouco confusa:

— Você não sabe?

— De que?

— Já faz quase um ano que ela morreu.

Joyce começa a chorar:

— Morreu? Mas quem matou ela?

Mandy começa a lembrar que antes de visitá-la, o responsável pelo presídio disse que a Joyce ficou com demência após a morte da filha e às vezes ela pergunta por Cindy e quando respondem que morreu, começa a chorar se culpando.

— Acho que a senhora já sabe.

— Por favor, eu não sou nenhuma assassina. Eu não queria fazer isso. Me perdoe, me perdoe, me perdoe filha.

— Vó, você magoou demais as pessoas, não sei se vai entender agora, mas saiba que eu não irei te visitar muito, estarei trabalhando em breve e espero que você aprende algo depois de tanta coisa.

— Meu amor, não vá embora assim, por que a pressa?

— O meu pai vai se casar com a Lucy amanhã e eles querem que eu volte logo para os últimos preparativos.

— Daltry vai se casar?

— Sim, finalmente.

— Ele finalmente conseguiu o que queria, eu realmente perdi tudo. Agora entendo o que eu poderia ter feito quando aquele homem me abusou, hoje estou aqui, passando o resto da minha vida nessa cadeia.

— Vó não pensa assim, estarei com você e caso queira alguma ajuda, pode me avisar.

— Agradeço a ajuda, mas eu quero ficar sozinha, estou bem aqui e não quero sair daqui nunca. Pode ir agora, a gente se vê em breve.

Mandy dá um longo suspiro:

— Tudo bem vó, faça o que quiser. Até logo.

— Adeus meu bem, fala para minha filha que estou com saudades.

Santiago vai na casa de Lucy e a encontra próximo do lago sozinha, ela grita:

— LUCY?

Lucy se vira e fala:

— Oi Santiago, estou indo aí.

Lucy se aproxima e abraça Santiago:

— Oi, que bom que você veio.

— E aí? Está nervosa para o casamento?

— Um pouco, nem acredito que vou casar com alguém que eu tanto amo.

— Pode acreditar, você será a noiva mais linda do mundo.

Lucy sorrindo timidamente:

— Só você mesmo Santiago para me aliviar um pouco. Você é como a minha irmã que eu nunca tive, só tenho que agradecer por sua amizade.

Santiago abraça novamente Lucy:

— Amiga, eu sempre fico emocionada com as suas palavras, isso é muito importante para mim, eu te amo muito e só desejo felicidades para você e o Daltry e quem sabe algum filho depois.

Lucy sorrindo:

— Ainda é cedo pensar em filho, quem sabe, não é mesmo?

— Eu entendo, tudo no nosso tempo. Agora vai descansar porque amanhã é o grande dia.

— Já vou, realmente amanhã será um grande dia.

Era manhã, dia ensolarado. Tudo pronto para o casamento, Mandy e Santiago eram as madrinhas de casamento e estavam na casa de Lucy para se arrumarem, elas iriam usar vestidos longos na cor rosa claro.

Lucy estava com um vestido de noiva branco no estilo de princesa, com pouca renda, mas não tão volumoso na cintura para baixo, decote ombro a ombro, longo véu e pequena tiara na cabeça de brilhantes, pronta para casar.

Mandy encantada com a noiva, fala:

— Lucy, você está maravilhosa.

— Obrigada Mandy.

— Pode ter certeza que você é uma das noivas mais linda que eu já vi.

— Agradeço muito de verdade.

Santiago também diz:

— Realmente Lucy, você está linda. A minha equipe fez um bom trabalho.

— Obrigada pela sua equipe pelo bom trabalho, você me deixaram do jeito que eu queria.

— Agora vamos porque eu não quero que a noiva chegue atrasada.

— Vamos sim.

As meninas entraram no carro a caminho da igreja. Na rua que fica a igreja, estava lotada de gente, curiosos, repórteres e fotógrafos, todos estavam de olho no noivo e na noiva. Daltry chega primeiro ao lado do pai, mãe e seu mordomo(amigo) Joe, há poucos convidados como era combinado e um pouco nervoso, fala com o pai:

— Está acontecendo, parece um sonho.

— Filho, já deu tudo certo. Olha, parece que a noiva chegou.

O padre se aproxima e fala em alto som:

— A NOIVA JÁ CHEGOU.

Daltry com um leve suspiro:

— Ela chegou.

Todos os convidados olham para a porta de entrada da igreja, era Lucy ao lado do pai e atrás estavam Mandy e Santiago segurando o véu que a cobria o rosto.

Lucy começa a sorrir para os convidados e olhando para o Daltry, que fica emocionado com aquela beleza na sua frente, ao se aproximar dele, seu pai James dá a sua mão para o Daltry e fala:

— Cuide bem dela.

— Pode deixar, vou cuidar muito bem dela.

James levanta o véu da filha e depois se afasta, o casal fica de frente ao padre. Ele começa:

— Bom dia a todos e sejam bem vindos para a casa do senhor. Hoje celebramos o união de Daltry Calhoun e Lucy Mary.

Depois de falar mais algumas palavras, chegou o momento da aceitação, o padre diz:

— Daltry Calhoun, você aceita como esposa Lucy Mary?

— Sim, aceito.

— Lucy Mary, aceita se casar com o Daltry Calhoun?

— Sim, eu aceito.

— Agora podem colocar as alianças.

Daltry coloca a aliança no terceiro dedo da mão esquerda de Lucy e depois fala:

— Eu Daltry Calhoun, te recebo como minha esposa e prometo ser fiel, te amar e respeitar na alegria e na tristeza, na saúde e na doença, todos os dias da nossa vida.

Lucy também coloca a aliança no dedo de Daltry e diz:

— Eu Lucy Mary, te recebo como esposo e prometo ser fiel, te amar, e respeitar na alegria e na tristeza, na saúde e na doença, todos os dias da nossa vida.

Após mais declarações do padre, a cerimônia se encerra com a seguinte fala:

— Eu vos declaro marido e mulher, agora o noivo pode beijar a noiva. Que Deus os acompanhe.

O casal fica de frente a frente, depois se beijam e todos da igreja começam a aplaudir. De mãos dadas, eles saem da igreja com chuva de arroz e os curiosos moradores de Ducktown batam palmas para o casal, agora estão oficialmente casados do jeito que tanto queriam. De carro, Daltry e Lucy vão para o salão de festas comemorar o casamento religioso. Durante a festa, chega o momento em que o casal fala com os convidados:

Daltry começa:

— Bom dia a todos, eu quero agradecer pela presença de todos nesse momento tão especial em nossas vidas. Saibam que hoje tenho a total clareza que estou com a mulher que tanto amo.

Daltry pega na mão de Lucy e a beija, ela sorrindo, diz:

— Bom, eu só tenho que agradecer também pela vinda de todos aqui. Pode ser até pouco sim, mas é o suficiente para comemorar a nossa felicidade. E estou muito feliz por estar com alguém que eu tanto amo.

O casal se beija e todos os convidados batam as palmas. O cerimonialista chama o casal:

— Agora é o momento de todos dançarem, inclusive os casados.

A maioria das pessoas vão para o meio do salão e começam a dançar a música At Last de Etta James. Juntos dançando, Daltry diz para Lucy:

— Eu te amo para todo sempre.

— Eu te amarei para todo sempre.

Após o final da festa, Daltry se aproxima de Mandy e diz:

— Minha filha, amanhã irei partir para uma pequena lua de mel com a Lucy, vou ficar alguns dias longe daqui, mas daqui a pouco volto.

— Tudo bem pai, só quero a sua felicidade ao lado da minha segunda mãe.

— Segunda mãe?

— Sim, eu sei que não é uma substituta da minha real mãe, mas tenho um grande carinho por ela.

— Eu entendo meu bem, olha, se precisar de algo, você pode me ligar.

— Ligarei quando for preciso.

Lucy se aproxima e fala com Mandy:

— Oi Mandy, gostou do casamento?

— Foi tudo lindo, você realmente estão felizes e só tenho que agradecer pelas pessoas incríveis que eu conheço.

Lucy abraça Mandy e diz:

— Se quiser morar com a gente, você pode, faz parte da nossa família agora.

— Sim, é claro que vou morar com vocês. Muito obrigada, eu amo vocês. Agora aproveitam o momento, nos vemos em breve e pode deixar que vou me cuidar.

— Eu confio em você filha.

— Nos vemos logo, se cuida.

O casal entra no carro que está todo enfeitado na parte de trás e todos acenam enquanto o veículo vai para o caminho da casa de Lucy.

Na casa do lago, como Daltry chama carinhosamente, eles entram e vão diretamente para o quarto e Lucy coloca os mãos os ombros dele e ele a abraça na sua cintura, se beijam e dizem juntos:

— Eu te amo.

Novos dias, novos momentos

Era 1970, no dia que fazia dois anos de casamento quando Lucy chega no escritório de Daltry e com os olhos cheio de lágrimas fala:

— Daltry, tenho algo para dizer.

Daltry um pouco apreensivo:

— Você está chorando, o que houve?

Lucy respira fundo:

— Eu estou grávida. Vou ter um filho com você.

Daltry coloca as mãos no rosto e depois sorri:

— Meu amor, agora está explicado aqueles fortes enjoos.

Lucy se aproxima de Daltry e o abraça:

— Sim meu amor, eu realmente estou grávida.

— Será muito bem vindo e saiba que eu já amo ele.

Nove meses depois…

Na casa de Lucy, deitada na cama do quarto, se recuperando do parto, ela apresenta o bebê para a mãe e diz:

— É um menino lindo, não é mãe?

— Sim filha, a vovó já ama demais ele.

Daltry entra no quarto e diz:

— Olá pessoal, como está a minha mulher ao lado desse filho tão lindo?

Lucy dá um beijo no Daltry e depois fala:

— Estamos muito bem.

— Saiba que estou muito grato pelo nosso filho.

— Eu sei meu bem, nunca imaginei em ser mãe, mas ele veio em bom momento, estou muito feliz por isso.

— A Mandy vai ficar muito feliz em ver o seu novo irmão.

— Vai sim, ela terá uma nova companhia.

Mandy já estava com os seus 20 anos e trabalha em uma agência de publicidade em Nova River, mora junto com uma amiga depois de ficar um ano na casa de Daltry, ela tirou um momento para ver o bebê, e lá, entra no quarto de Lucy e diz:

— Quero ver esse bebê lindo.

— Está ele, vou passar para você.

Lucy entrega o filho para os braços de Mandy e ela diz:

— Ele é muito lindo, um bebê iluminado, serei a sua melhor irmã.

— Estamos todos iluminados nesse momento.

— Eu nunca pensei que você seria mãe Lucy, mas de qualquer forma estou muito feliz por você.

— Obrigada meu bem, as coisas acontecem e a gente nem espera.

Mandy pergunta:

— Qual é o nome do bebê?

— George, em homenagem ao homem que me ajudou a tornar o que eu sou hoje.

Daltry se aproxima de Lucy e Mandy colocando as mãos em cada uma e diz:

— Quem diria aquele homem jovem, ainda descobrindo sobre a vida, morando no interior, teria tantas coisas ao longo dos anos. Pode ter certeza que hoje estou mais feliz do que nunca, eu realmente encontrei a minha felicidade. E vocês mulheres, tem o meu carinho, admiração e todo respeito. Amo muito vocês.

Lucy e Mandy falam:

— Também amamos você.
