To the end of the world
So in the last chapter of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal: The Life and Career of Two Tennis Legends, Sebastian Fest asks a bunch of tennis greats past and present one question:
“Imagine that the end of the world is coming but that you still have the chance to put together one tennis match that has never been played before nor ever even considered. You’ll decide; you’ll give shape to the match of all matches, and then calmly enjoy it while everything else comes to an end. What would you pick?”
There are a lot of interesting answers:
Moya picks Rafa vs Kuerten at Roland Garros: “I would love to know what would have happened with Kuerten and Rafa, both of them in their prime at Roland Garros. It would be really dramatic. I do think that Rafa is on top because of what he’s achieved, because the mobility in his legs is more explosive and he would have cornered him. Guga, in his prime, had a lot of shots.”
(Awww Carlos loves his little brother)
Mats Wilander picks Fedal: “I’d like to see Roger Federer defeating Rafa Nadal in the French Open final. There would be my all-time best match.” Wilander isn’t put off by the comment that that particular match never ended with Federer victorious. “It didn’t happen, but it would still be my dream, because that match, in terms of tactics, is the best match I could imagine. It would be because of everything that Federer would have to do to beat Nadal on clay. His choice and execution of shots would have to be perfect. And even if his tactics and execution were perfect, he would barely win, 6-4, in the last set.”
Bjorn Borg picks Fedal: “I never missed a match between Nadal and Federer, maybe just one or two of the ones they played. They each force the other to give their best. That’s the kind of tennis that you want to see, not just as a spectator but as a former player. I like to see how they go into it, the tactics, how they can give it their all.”
(Awww grandpa Bjorn loves his tennis sons)
Pete Sampras picks Federer vs Nadal 2008 Wimbledon: “The match between Rafa and Roger at Wimbledon, when it was getting dark. It was passionate.”
Novak picks himself vs Rafa to play or Nadal-Borg to watch: “Just to watch or also to play? If I could choose both options, I would love the idea of a match with a half-clay and half-turf court, like Roger and Rafa already played once. I would make it half clay and half turf, and I would play against Rafa.” And if you were just a spectator? “I would want to watch a Nadal-Borg. That would be fun.”
But then there’s this:
During that same week, Nadal is asked the same question in Monte Carlo. It’s the end of an interview, and the Spaniard’s first reaction is uncomfortable. “Uff...I have no idea, man.” But a second later he changes his mind. “I would choose to play, not watch, because ultimately I love to play and I love the feeling of complicated matches. There are many great champions, but after all we’ve been through together, I would play against Federer.”
Awwwww Rafa that’s so sweet <3 <3 <3.
And then there’s this:
The question is presented to Federer in 2014 during the Paris Autumn. His choice is different from Nadal’s and Sampras’s; he would rather see his trainer (at the time) in a final that never was. “It would be Edberg against someone...probably against Sampras at Wimbledon, simply because he was my idol when I was growing up and I would love to see them play again on the Wimbledon central court.”
Federer then hears that, on the last day before the end of the world, Sampras would want to watch a Nadal-Federer, and that the Spaniard would also want him on the other side of the net just before Armageddon. His reaction is notably “Swiss.” “Interesting...it is maybe because we have a great contrast of style and personalities which make up for great matches.”
NO ROGER YOU DOOFUS, IT’S BECAUSE YOU’RE HIS TENNIS SOULMATE.

Hard For Me To Get A Grasp Of It : Swiatek Surprised On Joining 100-week Club As World No.1
Tumblr media
Iga Swiatek: Iga Swiatek, the world No.1, recently reached the milestone of becoming the ninth player to spend 100 weeks at the top of the WTA rankings. Reflecting on this achievement, the Pole expressed her surprise, saying it’s hard to "get a grasp of this milestone" because it happened so fast.Among the select group of nine players who have spent 100 weeks at the summit of the WTA rankings, Swiatek stands as the fifth youngest after Martina Hingis, Monica Seles, Stefanie Graf, and Chris Evert to achieve this feat at the age of 22 years and 326 days "Honestly it’s hard for me to get a grasp of it because it happened so fast,” Swiatek said of joining the 100 club. "It’s pretty crazy. I never expected to be in that position. Actually, staying at the top of the game for so long is something that really makes me proud," Swiatek said in a Madrid Open pre-tournament presser on Tuesday. "I think we made some tough decisions sometimes. I have good people that are guiding me and helping me so for sure I wouldn’t be here if I would do it by myself and I’m really grateful that everything led to that. The four-time Grand Slam champion first took over the top spot in April 2022 when Ashleigh Barty retired from tennis and has remained at the summit ever since, except for an eight-week period last season when Aryna Sabalenka replaced her. "As you know, especially last year, getting back to No.1 was a big deal and it happened in an unpredictable way, so I’m just proud of myself that I could cope with all the pressure that comes with that. But overall it’s kind of fun," she added. Swiatek will reach the milestone 749 days after first ascending to World No.1 -- the fourth-quickest player to reach 100 weeks following Graf, Evert and Seles, according to WTA stats. Arriving in the Spanish capital, Swiatek is celebrating her 100th week as the world No.1. Having been a runner-up in Madrid last year, she will kick off her campaign against Wang Xiyu of China. The three-time Roland Garros winner started her clay season with a semifinal showing in Stuttgart last week, where she lost to eventual champion Elena Rybakina in three sets. However, she remains unfazed by her defeat to Rybakina, emphasizing that she never takes her victories for granted, whether on clay or any other surface. "Well it puts you back on the ground but on the other hand I never felt like I am taking these tournaments for granted because still, you know, I lost here last year and I lost in Rome. "We’re competing really against the best players in the world so it’s not like you’re going to win every tournament. Even though it is my favourite surface, it doesn’t mean that my tennis is going to be perfect," said Swiatek. As Madrid welcomes the best players in the world for its two-week tennis extravaganza, the sport bids farewell to a future Hall-of-Famer in Garbine Muguruza, who announced she is officially hanging up her racquet on the eve of the tournament. Swiatek has been a long-time fan of the Spanish former world No.1 and took time to pay tribute to Muguruza. "When I was younger I was looking at her achievements when she won Roland Garros and Wimbledon, I was thinking maybe she’s going to be my favourite WTA player. Because I always liked Rafa (Nadal), but I never really had anybody on the WTA to follow. Garbine was actually one of them for a while and then I started playing on tour so it was pretty weird to be fangirling about anybody," revealed Swiatek. "I’m still trying to understand tennis on grass so hopefully I’ll also be able to do it one day and maybe Garbine can help me a little bit with that, I’ll ask her,” the 22-year-old said with a smile. Swiatek hopes she can one day match the Spaniard and add the Wimbledon title to her resume. "I’m still trying to understand tennis on grass so hopefully I’ll also be able to do it one day and maybe Garbine can help me a little bit with that, I’ll ask her,” the 22-year-old said with a smile," Swiatek concluded. Rafael Nadal withdraws from French Open due to injury, says 'next year is my last year'
Tumblr media
CNN  —  Rafael Nadal will miss the French Open for the first time since he made his debut in 2005 after the 14-time champion announced on Thursday that he has withdrawn from the tournament due to injury, adding that “next year is my last year” in professional tennis. The Spaniard suffered a hip injury during his second-round Australian Open defeat to Mackenzie McDonald in January and initially said he hoped to be fit again within six to eight weeks. However, in an update posted on social media on April 20 and then again on Thursday, the 22-time grand slam champion said his recovery process was taking longer than anticipated. Nadal also revealed that he will be away from the court for the next “few months” as he continues to recover, meaning the 36-year-old will also likely miss Wimbledon. “My ambition is to try to stop to give myself an opportunity to enjoy next year, that’s probably going to be my last year on the professional tour,” Nadal told a press conference at his Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Spain. “That’s my idea, even then I can’t say 100% because you never know what can happen – but my idea and my motivation is to try to enjoy and try to say goodbye to all the tournaments that have been important for me in my tennis career during year, and just try to enjoy that, being competitive and enjoying being on the court, something that today is not possible.
Tumblr media
“I really believe, if I keep going now, I will not be able to make that happen. I don’t know if I stop if I will be able to make that happen, but I know the chances are much higher.” The ‘King of Clay’ said he intended to return for the Davis Cup Finals, which get underway in September. Nadal has lost just three times at the French Open since his victorious debut appearance in 2005, undoubtedly one of the most dominant records in all of sport. In 2009, he suffered one of the biggest upset in tennis history after losing in the round of 16 to Robin Söderling, before being beaten Novak Djokovic in 2015 and 2021. In 2016, Nadal withdrew ahead of his third-round match against compatriot Marcel Granollers due to a wrist injury. Nadal has not played since the Australian Open and in March dropped out of the world’s top 10 for the first time since 2005. “Rafa, we can’t imagine how hard this decision was,” Roland Garros wrote on Twitter.” We’ll definitely miss you at this year’s Roland-Garros. Take care of yourself to come back stronger on courts. “Hoping to see you next year in Paris.” Source link Read the full article
