DETECTIVE GRIMOIRE : V FOR VALEDICTORIAN, coming 20XX!

with summer fast approaching and graduation a mere week away, the growing excitement at chumbridge college had quickly morphed into anxiety when that year's valedictorian, victoria valentine, is found dead in the campus's grand auditorium. grimoire and sally are called in to get to the bottom of things, but will they be able to successfully navigate the secrets of the storied campus and the complex interpersonal lives of its students & staff? perhaps, the keen eye of a certain junior detective could help with that...

finally finished up the character line-up for my dg fancase. coming up with 10 unique character designs was one hell of a challege, but i had a lot of fun creating these guys! i'll try sharing more about them soon, (probably after a rest my hand for a lil bit lol)

V FOR VALEDICTORIAN character introduction :

VICTORIA VALENTINE, the valedictorian & victim.

after dragging my feet on finishing her chara intro, here's some more info on victoria! the basic idea behind her design was "60's girl-next-door meets elle woods & cher horowitz." it's a bummer that she's not really present in the story because i ended up liking her a lot, too bad she got caught up in something much bigger than what she thought it was.

Victoria Valentine, Also known as Vic

The Valedictorian of Chumbridge College’s Postgraduate Class, known for being a kind-hearted and passionate person who was extremely active in campus life and local outreach projects. She was about to graduate with a Masters in Law.

Found dead at 6:26 in Chumbridge College’s Grand Auditorium by Georgie Grover, hung by one of the stage curtain’s counterweights.

According to her partially recovered Valedictorian speech, she was going to expose someone on campus. Who this was exactly is still unknown.

Her father was a former business partner of Hugh Henly, but was convicted of accounting fraud and embezzlement 6 years ago. Her mother left him not long after his conviction and Victoria hadn’t had much contact with either of them since.

Harris was one of Victoria’s closest friends, having known each other since childhood, as well as her #1 academic rival. The two also dated for a brief time, which ended in a nasty fight, but had since reconciled.

Angie was Victoria’s roommate and closest confidant. Having met in one of their undergraduate classes, the two had become extremely close friends and were rarely seen apart. Though, it seems their relationship was a bit deeper than just friends.

Recently, she had been seeing Dr. Conrad to help mitigate some of the stress related to her role as Valedictorian.

For some reason, she seemed very concerned about J.B.’s safety lately.

Like Drew, she had a very strong sense of justice. Due to this, she intended to work as a Civil Rights Lawyer after graduation.

According to Harris, while Victoria was always well-intentioned, she had a bad habit of getting overly involved in other people’s business (whether they wanted her to be or not.)

V FOR VALEDICTORIAN character introduction :

J.B. DECKER, the librarian.

here's the next character intro with j.b.!! honestly, i think she's my favorite out of the whole cast design wise. she's just so much fun to draw for me.

i haven't started on her intro yet, but the next character i'll be sharing is our victim, victoria valentine!

Justine B. Decker, Also known as J.B.

Chumbridge College's Chief Librarian who is known for keeping meticulous care of the Library. Has been working in the position for a little over 6 years, having previously worked as an assistant librarian while attending Chumbridge for her masters.

Generally well liked by students and staff due to her polite nature and cordial personality. She also isn't afraid to be straightforward with others when needed. Describes herself as an "open book."

Legal guardian of her niece, Drew. Gets exacerbated by her antics, but clearly loves and cares for her deeply. They have no other living relatives so they're the only family either has left.

Her brother and sister-in-law were both killed in a breaking and entering gone horribly wrong 3 years ago, the culprit was never found and the case has since gone cold.

Fairly familiar with the victim as she was a frequent visitor to the library, especially as of the past few months. Victoria may have been concerned for J.B.'s safety, having been the one who suggested that Georgie escort Drew and her when they leave campus for the night.

Dr. Conrad was one of her brother's college friends and seems interested in getting to know her better outside of work, the feeling isn't mutual.

Big fan of mystery novels and enjoys reading them in her spare time.

Writes as a hobby, using the journal she carries with her to jot down ideas and draft out her stories. Isn't very confident in her writing so she's pretty apprehensive about sharing it with others. The currently story she's writing is a murder mystery, revolving around a cold case.

Likes bad puns.

V FOR VALEDICTORIAN character introduction :

DREW DECKER, the junior detective.

i FINALLY finished the first two character introductions for my fancase so now i can actually share them in full! (ya'll can probably see why they took so long now ha ha...)

i had to start with my faves of the cast so here's some more info on drew! i'll be posting j.b.'s character intro next.

Drew Decker

A precocious young girl who aims to become a world class private detective one day. She is the first person Grimoire & Sally encounter at Chumbridge and eventually becomes an essential ally during their investigation.

Drew takes her goal of becoming a detective very seriously and gets agitated when others make light of her aspirations, especially when they make assumptions on her motivations.

Her ability to pick up on small details most miss, strong sense of justice, and compassionate heart are all great traits for a detective to have, but her bullheadedness and tendency to run blindly into situations could definitely lead to trouble.

J.B. is her aunt and legal guardian after the passing of her parents. The two have always been quite close, but Drew sometimes worries that she causes too much trouble for her aunt (despite trying to avoid doing so.) She respects her a lot, but does question her terrible sense of humor.

While she does miss her parents a great deal, she tries to avoid dwelling on their absence too much. Their unsolved murders are one of the things that motivates Drew to become a detective.

Not having anyone to watch her after school, Drew hangs around Chumbridge’s Library while she waits for her aunt to finish work. (It’s not uncommon to see her exploring the rest of the college, but don’t tell J.B. that.) As a result, she’s pretty familiar with a lot of people on campus.

She was pretty familiar with the victim and got along with her very well, as Victoria seemed fond of Drew. She often asked her how her days at school went and would even help her with her math homework. Drew notes that the brooch Victoria always wore was nowhere to be found at the crime scene.

Drew is not the Little Girl Grimoire is familiar with, but the two seem to be connected somehow.

Despite frequently getting in trouble at school, her grades are nearly perfect. Math is the only exception, it’s a major weak point of her’s.

Likes to draw, often doodling whenever she can find a pen and paper.

Hey, this is gonna sound incredibly random, but could I perhaps get a close up of Victoria's room from the character sheet?

The little picture of her room from the character sheet but on it's own, basically?

After seeing it I've been thinking about doing something similar for my own oc's because I think it's a very simple way of designing interiors but also very effective... Like you get a clear idea of what the room looks like but it's not hyperdetailed which makes it far easier to draw.

I know that I can just zoom in myself but a higher quality version would make it easier, if it's not a bother to you.

sure, i actually had to scale the full sketch down a bit to have it fit on victoria's character sheet so here's the higher quality version of it (+ the grand auditorium background i did for her info sheet. )

however, i do wanna give credit where it's due — these were my attempts at imitating catherine unger's environment design work on tangle tower, i referenced her work heavily while drawing these. i highly recommend checking out her work instead, especially the concept art she did for the game's locations.

( using freya's room as an example bc it's one of my favorite locations in the game. )

one of my favorite features of tangle tower is that it has an art gallery in the main menu where you can get some insight on the game's visual development and there's a whole section of it dedicated to every single location featured in the game. if you don't wanna play the game, you can also access the concept art + final designs of each location by checking out the detective grimoire wikia. the visual development for this game is so freaking good and has inspired me a lot, please give it a look!

Ok! Let’s hope this works!

Two days ago I posted some doodles for a Detective Grimoire fancase I thought of. I’ll introduce one of the characters along with explaining the general plot more.

MEET FINLEY TENDERHOOKS

(yes I know they were already posted with the initial art dump, I just really like them, ok?)

Finley is a waiter at the (currently unnamed) casino and club that the case takes place in. They used to be an orphan that lived outside of the casino until the owner decided to take them in and eventually give them a job there. Everyone at the casino treats them like either their kid or younger sibling and if anyone treats them badly then they’ll take care of them.

They’re a very jumpy person, on edge most of the time. Nervous and anxious about every little thing.

Finley’s favorite post-shift activity is drunk karaoke. They’re not great, but it’s always charming and sometimes other people join in. His best friend and pseudo-brother is the prizefighter of the casino, Chaz. They always like hanging out and Finley is often cheering Chaz on from the crowd while he fights.

So there’s that. I’ll try to give a synopses later.

I’d love ideas for the casino and case name, please.
