The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) released its 2021 "hate map" with an updated list of 733 organizations it brands "hate groups" on Wednesday. The list still includes many prominent conservative advocacy groups and a Christian ministry that has sued the SPLC for defamation in a Supreme Court appeal challenging New York Times v. Sullivan (1964).

The 733 number represents a decline from the 838 "hate groups" the SPLC reported last year.

The SPLC defines a "hate group" as "an organization or collection of individuals that – based on its official statements or principles, the statements of its leaders, or its activities – has beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics. An organization does not need to have engaged in criminal conduct or have followed their speech with actual unlawful action to be labeled a hate group."

SPLC KEEPS CHRISTIAN GROUP ON ‘HATE MAP’ 9 YEARS AFTER TERRORIST ATTACK

Critics have claimed that the SPLC brands mainstream conservative and Christian organizations "hate groups," placing them on a list and a map with truly hateful organizations like the Ku Klux Klan. The "Intelligence Project," the SPLC division that monitors "hate groups," began as a project to monitor the KKK and other White supremacist organizations.

In 2019, the SPLC fired its co-founder, Morris Dees, in the wake of claims of racial discrimination and sexual harassment that traced back decades. Amid this scandal, a former staffer came forward, claiming that the SPLC uses its "hate group" accusation to exaggerate hate in a fundraising scheme to "bilk" donors.

The 2021 "hate group" list includes many conservative nonprofit organizations, branding them "anti-LGBT hate groups," "anti-Muslim hate groups" and "anti-immigrant hate groups." The list includes Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the Family Research Council (FRC), ACT for America, the Center for Security Policy (CSP), the American Freedom Law Center (AFLC) and D. James Kennedy Ministries (DJKM).

In August 2012, a terrorist targeted FRC in Washington, D.C, planning to shoot everyone in the building and put a Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich by each victim's head. The shooter opened fire, striking a security guard, who successfully tackled him until police arrived, preventing the intended massacre. The shooter, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison on charges including terrorism, told the FBI that he found FRC on the SPLC's "hate map." The SPLC condemned the shooting, but it has kept FRC on the "hate map."

The SPLC has faced multiple defamation lawsuits over its "hate" and "extremist" labeling. In 2018, the SPLC paid $3.375 million and issued a groveling apology after branding Muslim reformer Maajid Nawaz an "Anti-Muslim Extremist." The Supreme Court is considering whether to take up DJKM's defamation lawsuit challenging the "hate group" accusation.

The SPLC has also faced criticism for its large endowment, which had $529,801,832 in 2019, and for offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

"DJKM proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the truths of the Bible," David Gibbs, DJKM's attorney, told Fox News Digital in a statement. "The ministry has sued SPLC for defamation, libel, and slander because we are not a ‘hate’ organization, and our case is currently before the Supreme Court to decide whether the Times v Sullivan standard should be reconsidered."

"We believe that greater accountability will create more civility in public discourse, and SPLC’s hate map is dangerous and intended to destroy organizations which they arbitrarily decide to include," Gibbs added. "If every church and ministry with similar Biblical beliefs were included, it would at least be complete, but SPLC selectively targets some organizations for destruction for reasons known only to them."

"The SPLC so-called ‘hate map’ is accurately titled," a spokesperson for AFLC, a Judeo-Christian law firm in Michigan, told Fox News Digital. "It is nothing but a listing of progressives' hatred of any person or organization that disagrees with their radical sociopolitical agenda. And being a hateful progressive organization is profitable in this day and age."

"Any non-profit that hides hundreds of millions of dollars in secret off-shore bank accounts is in reality a money-laundering criminal enterprise dressed up as a non-profit," the AFLC spokesperson added. SPLC brands AFLC an "anti-Muslim hate group."

"The SPLC has perfected the art of smearing their opponents in a way that defies all sense of logic and objectivity," Brigitte Gabriel, founder and chairman of ACT for America, told Fox News Digital. "Not only are those they often target not actually hateful, but often, actually fighting against hatred and standing for true human rights."

Gabriel, whose organization the SPLC brands an "anti-Muslim hate group," said she founded ACT for America "after the tragedy of 9/11 because I am a survivor of terrorism." She said that after radical Islamic terrorists bombed her home in Lebanon in 1975, she determined to "fight hatred and evil and stand up for the defenseless no matter who they are and what their religion is."

"The SPLC realized long ago that selling hate was very lucrative to their bottom line," Gabriel added. "They not only named ACT For America as a hate group, they even went so far as to list 48 chapters of our organization as 48 different hate groups at one point." The 2021 list has 22 "hate group" entries for ACT for America.

DEMOCRATS CELEBRATE SPLC ANNIVERSARY, IGNORE RACE, SEX, FUNDRAISING SCANDALS

Gabriel noted the 2019 scandal, claiming that "the same organization that projects itself as the sole arbiter of who can and should be considered a hate group, is in fact itself, a hate group, starting at the very top of their organization." She called the organization "an insincere, untrustworthy, slanderous, money-sucking machine" and called on "corporations, government agencies and the media" to "find a more honorable, objective and trustworthy source of information when it comes to identifying ‘hate’ in modern-day America."

Don Woodsmall, interim president of the Center for Security Policy, pointed to the 2019 scandal and the FRC shooting.

"The SPLC leadership’s own history is one of racism, misogyny and spreading hate, including an extremist attack on the Family Research Center," Woodsmall told Fox News Digital. "The notion that haters of the truth can be fit judges of who is or is not a ‘hater’ is preposterous, and the sooner people stop taking these far-left loons seriously the better."

The SPLC did not respond to an after-hours request for comment regarding the criticism.

TRIAL / NÄCHSTER TITEL FÜR DEN SERIENMEISTER Nach seinem sechsten Rang zum Abschluss der WM-Saison im italienischen Pietramurata und Gesamtrang neun in der Königsklasse TrialGP hat Franz Kadlec am Final-Wochenende in der Deutschen Meisterschaft erneut seine Ausnahmestellung im deutschen Trial-Sport untermauert. Der 20-Jährige aus Reichersbeuern holte sich zum vierten Mal in Folge den nationalen Titel und gewann dabei auf seiner GasGas wieder einmal jeden einzelnen Wertungslauf. Förderkollege Max Faude (18/Sindelfingen) fuhr auf die Plätze vier und zwei und belegte damit in der Deutschen Meisterschaft den dritten Rang.

MOTORRAD / STARKER GAST-AUFTRITT AUF DER WM-BÜHNE Jan-Ole Jähnig hat seine Saison mit einer gelungenen Premiere auf der WM-Bühne abgerundet. Der Deutsche Meister der Supersport 300, der in diesem Jahr auch starke Leistungen im ADAC Northern Europe Cup gezeigt hat, durfte mit der neuen KTM RC 390 R für die WM-Saison 2018 im spanischen Jerez in der 300er-Klasse der Superbike-Weltmeisterschaft WorldSBK außerhalb der Wertung an den Start gehen. Nach Platz 13 im Qualifying zeigte der 16-Jährige aus Lehndorf im Rennen eine Aufholjagd bis auf den sechsten Rang, der Rückstand zum Sieger betrug gerade einmal 0,6 Sekunden. “Was für ein Rennen! Ein Ergebnis mit dem KTM wirklich sehr zufrieden ist und das große Hoffnungen für das kommende Jahr weckt”, sagte Jähnig. “Es hat mir echt Spaß gemacht, mich mal mit den Jungs aus der WM zu messen, und natürlich hoffe ich, 2018 die komplette Saison in der Superbike-WM in der Klasse SuperSport 300 bestreiten zu können.”

KARTSPORT / VIZE-TITEL IN DER DEUTSCHEN JUNIOREN MEISTERSCHAFT Nach dem dritten Gesamtrang im ADAC Kart Masters hat sich Hugo Sasse (13/Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach) den Vize-Titel in der renommierten Deutschen Junioren Kart Meisterschaft (DJKM) gesichert. Beim Saisonfinale auf dem South Garda Circuit im italienischen Lonato fuhr Sasse in den beiden Hauptläufen jeweils als bester deutscher Fahrer der Junioren auf die Plätze neun und sieben, was ausreichte, um mit 190 Punkten und sechs Zählern Vorsprung den zweiten Platz in der Meisterschaft zu behaupten. Geschlagen geben musste sich Sasse am Ende nur dem Niederländer Kas Haverkort, der auf insgesamt 221 Punkte kam.

FORMELSPORT / PLATZ ZWEI IN DER ROOKIE-WERTUNG BEHAUPTET Jannes Fittje hat seine erste Saison in der European Open Serie als zweitbester Rookie abgeschlossen. Nach dem Einstand mit dem italienischen Team RP Motorsport in Monza hatte der 18-Jährige aus Waltershausen/Gotha beim Saisonfinale in Barcelona mit Balanceproblemen und einem übereifrigen Gastfahrer zu kämpfen. Die beiden siebten Plätze in den Rennen reichten aber dennoch, um Rang zwei in der Rookie-Meisterschaft erfolgreich zu behaupten. Im Gesamtklassement wurde Fittje Fünfter. “Zusammenfassend bin ich mit meiner Saison sehr zufrieden. Ich konnte viel lernen und habe mich seit Beginn an der Spitze etabliert. Leider gab es auch einige Rückschläge, die haben mich aber noch stärker gemacht”, sagte Fittje. “Nun gilt es nach vorne zu schauen und 2018 wieder anzugreifen.”

RALLYE / ALS GASTSTARTER KNAPP AM PODIUM VORBEI Marijan Griebel hat nach dem Gewinn der U28-Europameisterschaft seine Erfolgssaison mit einem Gaststart beim Saisonfinale der Deutschen Rallye-Meisterschaft ausklingen lassen. Bei der ADAC 3-Städte-Rallye steuerte der 28-Jährige aus Hahnweiler erstmals einen Peugeot 208 T16 R5 vom Team Peugeot Deutschland Romo und fuhr als Vierter mit Co-Pilot Alexander Rath nur um 1,8 Sekunden am Podium vorbei. “Für Samstag früh hatten wir mit den Reifen gepokert, was leider nicht aufging. Ich hab mein Allerbestes gegeben mit dem Löwen, aber Hermann Gassner Junior war am Ende einen Tick schneller”, sagte Griebel. Dem ehemaligen Förderpiloten Fabian Kreim genügte der zweite Platz, um sich bereits zum zweiten Mal in Folge den Deutschen Meistertitel zu sichern.

SEMINARPROGRAMM / ANGEBOT VON PIRELLI UND ZF Eine Gruppe von Förderfahrern nahm an Seminarangeboten von Reifenhersteller Pirelli und dem Schweinfurther Unternehmen ZF teil. Bei Pirelli stand unter anderem die richtige Reifennutzung auf dem Programm, ZF zeigte beispielsweise verschiedene Möglichkeiten der Fahrwerksabstimmung auf. Auch das Thema einer Ausbildung bei Pirelli und ZF wurde den Teilnehmern vorgestellt. Ziel der ADAC Stiftung Sport ist es, neben der erfolgreichen sportlichen Karriere auch die große Bedeutung einer beruflichen Ausbildung der Förderfahrer hervorzuheben.

EINLADUNG / VORSTELLUNG DES FÖRDERKADERS 2018 IN ESSEN Auf der Essen Motor Show wird am 1. Dezember der neue Förderkader der ADAC Stiftung Sport für 2018 vorgestellt. Im Rahmen des Preview-Tages präsentieren sich alle von der Stiftung unterstützten Motorsportler bei einem Pressetermin auf dem ADAC Stand in Halle 3. Die Talente stehen im Anschluss an die Gesprächsrunde für Fotos und Interviews zur Verfügung . Beginn der Präsentation ist am Freitag um 16.30 Uhr.

EHEMALIGE FÖRDERPILOTEN / TRIUMPHFAHRT IN DER DTM Der ehemalige Förderpilot René Rast hat beim Saisonfinale auf dem Hockenheimring seinen ersten DTM-Titel gefeiert – und das gleich in seiner ersten kompletten Saison in der Tourenwagenserie. Der Audi-Fahrer war mit 21 Punkten Rückstand auf seinen Markenkollegen Mattias Ekström in die beiden letzten Rennen des Jahres gegangen, krönte sich dann aber wenige Tage vor seinem 31. Geburtstag mit einem sechsten und einem zweiten Platz zum Champion. Als zusätzliche Auszeichnung wurde Rast wegen seiner bisherigen erfolgreichen Motorsportlaufbahn auch zum ADAC Motorsportler des Jahres gewählt.
