Dragondrums
I don't really know how this is supposed to be the third in a trilogy - I understand it was marketed as the Harper Hall trilogy, but Dragonsong and Dragonsinger are a clearly linked duology that might as well be one book, and then Dragondrums is book with a different protagonist that nudges itself back into the political complexities of Pern.
I did really enjoy it, for all it was structurally all over the place. It started more like a YA coming of age like Menolly's story, but it didn't end that way.
I was pretty neutral on Piemur overall, but I did enjoy his adventures. Some of the bullying scenarios reminded me of Kel's struggles in the Protector of the Small quartet by Tamora Pierce. I'm glad that part didn't get dragged out too long, though... as I was saying in my Dragonsinger review, I'm just not super interested in school stories at this point.
I think I expected Piemur to do more drumming overall, but the second half of the book was more adventure shenanigans. They were certainly amusing and I enjoyed myself. But as the focus and POV went to adults, I definitely found myself caring a lot less about Piemur and his survival story, and a lot more about what the adults were getting up to.
Overall, these three books were easy, enjoyable reads with a lot to recommend them and nothing I can complain too much about. I've really enjoyed spending time with characters who are not dragonriders, it rounds out Pern. Although, I will say, I am interested in getting back to dragons too! But fire lizards are just as wonderful.
8/10

Well that was pointlses. 90% of that book was complete drivel. Lierally nothing was going on for 90% of that book. What a fucking waste of time.
And now it says on the last pages that there was another one published in 2011 called Dragonrider, which isn't showing up on the wikipedia page.
anyways let me compare the list on the wikipedia page
Dragonflight (Web archive)
Dragonquest (Web archive)
The White Dragon (Web archive)
Dragonsong (Web archive)
Dragonsinger (Web archive)
Dragondrums (Web archive)
Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern (Web archive)
Nerilka's Story (Web archive)
Dragonsdawn (Web archive)
The Renegades of Pern (Web archive)
All the Weyrs of Pern (Web archive)
The Dolphins of Pern (Web archive)
Red Star Rising (IDK, this one's weird)
The Masterharper of Pern (Web archive)
The Skies of Pern (Web archive)
Dragon's Kin (Web archive)
Dragon's Fire (Web archive)
Dragon Harper (Web archive)
Dragon's Time (Web archive)
Sky Dragons no? (Web archive)
Dragonsblood (Web archive)
Dragonheart (Web archive)
Dragongirl (Web archive)
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall (Web archive)
A Gift of Dragons (Web archive)
Dragon's Code (Web archive)
so I still actually need to read:
Sky Dragons (Web archive)
A Gift of Dragon (Web archive)
Dragon's Code (web archive)
IDK how I managed to skip them...whoops.
pro tip, these books are filled with ableism, misogyny, racism, and all kinds of bullshit. Do not spend money if you plan to read them. Borrow them from the web archive or your local library.
Edit: Okay, I have no clue why the books are listed in this order on the wikipedia page, because Dragon's Time is set after Dragongirl.....what the fuck. So don't trust this order for when you should read them.
Edit 2: By the way, if anyone wants to make a list of the books in their actual proper reading order, you should be able to just copy the line for each book here and paste it into a new post and the link should still work so you don't have to do that all over again.

I always skip Dragondrums because I don't care about Piemur and then get hit with the double brick of him having a girlfriend and Menolly having a son in All the Weyrs of Pern

Another random one from the collection: the Colin Saxton edition of Dragonsinger (Sidgwick & Jackson, 1977).
Sariel's Guide to Pern has a whole page dedicated to him (here), and while it's hard to find images of his work online now the old Pern Museum did have the colour version of this artwork.
It's only available on the Wayback Machine now: check it out here.

It's much easier to find photos of his cover art for Dragondrums (here), which was originally created as a poster for the World Science Fiction Convention in 1972 by Anne.

dragondrums makes me mad because it is the incitng incident for many many injsustices taken agajnst menolly as a character and it mischaracterizes piemurs reputation for plot contrivance BUT. i still liek it. (microcosm of my relationshiip with the whole series)

Rules: in a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you.
I was tagged by @sparrowmoth !! thank you my friend, I’m always happy to talk about books
1. Frankenstein: the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley
2. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielwski
3. The Earthsea trilogy by Ursula K Le Guin
4. Piranesi by Susanna Clark
5. Dazzling Brightness by Roberta Gellis
6. The Shifter series by Shelly Laurensten
7. The Protector of the Small quartet by Tamora Pierce
8. Dragonsong, Dragonsinger and Dragondrums by Anne Mccaffrey
9. The Scholomance trilogy by Naomi Novik
10. Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice

My opinions on renegades this reread:
Overall much tighter than I remembered, despite the two plotlines being largely unrelated for the most of the book they’re independently pretty strong.
Getting insight into the lives of the trader caravans and holdless is super interesting, and leads to a lot of general worldbuilding. Unfortunately Aramina has literally zero personality which is a shame because she was interesting in the Girl Who Heard Dragons. Thella is honestly an awesome character, she’s both sorta an interesting example of the way women function on pern and delightfully evil (now when do we get to see her and Kylara interact? Evil sisters ftw).
Even more fun is Piemur, Toric, and Sharra. I find Piemur’s narration wildly entertaining, and I love seeing more of Sharra in her Dragondrums realm as opposed to her White Dragon realm. She’s better before Jaxom starts describing her. Insight into the day to day operations at southern hold is fun too. Toric is an excellent character imo, and this book gets soooo much farther into the politics around the southern continent that twd just brushes on.
It does fall apart at the end a little, when things start to pick up at Landing. Any of the sections, especially before atwop, that are just a bunch of random characters hanging out at Landing who really only are there because Anne wants to mash them all together, are honestly a little silly. Idk I thought they were super fun when I was younger but now I just wonder why no one is doing their real job.
The last section also completely throws a way the focused lens of the rest of the book in favor of the “how many people can we cram into this one scene without developing any characters” style that atwop is in. It works for the action that’s happening but it’s jarring when you’ve just read a whole book that’s not like that.
The Piemur/Jancis situation literally just appears at the end of the book because of COURSE we can’t end without pairing him off with someone. That being said I can’t hate it because woman smithcrafters are awesome
On to all the weyrs…
