New lookbook for our eldest Walsh child, now in the 1900s! Now a bit older, Edeline has started wearing colors she prefers over her mother's obsession with pink and blue, especially green, her new favorite color. Her clothes are more functional than decorative as a result of starting school.

When Edeline began medical school, she learned she was not the only woman in the program. In fact, she was one of two women in the program. Like Edeline, Penelope Hamilton’s husband was also a doctor, and now that the war was over, she’d returned to her medical studies.
Tumblr media
“What do you think of this illness going around?”
The blonde shrugged. “I don’t know. I am afraid that it will have grave effects if it indeed is as deadly as the papers are saying. My mother has written and said my father has caught a cold, but she think it’s only a cold.”
Penelope frowned. “Let’s hope so. I fear my mother has caught it. She is so ill that she cannot even leave her bed. My husband and I are caring for her day and night.”
“Be careful,” Edeline muttered.
Tumblr media
Shortly after, Penelope began to cough, so violently that she stopped walking, trying to contain her fit as Edeline tried to calm her friend, nearly jumping back in shock when she checked her forehead. She was burning up. Penelope’s face was suddenly clammy, pale and she started coughing before collapsed to the ground.
Edeline, terrified, fell to her knees as she began to yell for help.

1890s lookbook for the eldest Walsh child, Edeline! As the daughter of upper-middle-class parents, Edeline wears nice clothing and dresses, not having to worry about getting dirty from farm chores, etc. She is dressed by her mother (hint the pinks and blues lol) and has not yet found her style, so she is often wearing very feminine clothing.

Edeline MacGregor (Nee. Walsh) on a picnic in the Scottish countryside, March 1919
Tumblr media
Edeline Rose MacGregor (Nee. Walsh) was born to Peter and Rebecca Walsh in 1892 as their firstborn and older twin to brother Alexander, born twenty minutes after she. She was raised in her hometown of Newcrest, proudly taking her duties as eldest sister seriously becoming a sister to brother Byron and sister Giselle in 1895 and 1900 respectively.
As a teenager, she became enamored by romance novels, not caring about her future until Giselle's near death by diphtheria, she discovered her passion for helping others and decided to become a doctor, though this was met with resistance from her parents at first.
She attended the London School of Medicine for Women for her undergraduate, graduating in the spring of 1915 after taking time off to care for her ailing grandmother. At college, she met the Scottish doctor and communist Montgomery MacGregor, and it was love at first sight.
After the outbreak of World War I, she and Montgomery became engaged, and after her graduation, she became in charge of training nurses for the VAD program, marrying her beau summer of 1915. After the end of the war, she and Montgomery sold their home and moved to Edinburgh, where she began to attend the University of Edinburgh to complete her medical degree and open a practice with her husband before succumbing to the Spanish Flu.
Edeline was a gentle soul, and always strived to look at the positive of things, even if her jealousy (especially at her brothers when they were teenagers) caused her to be brash in some of her choices. She never lost the romantic idealization, often reading Jane Austen along with her medical textbooks.
She is survived by her husband Montgomery, mother Rebecca, brother Byron, sister Giselle, mother-in-law Janet, and sister-in-law Elspeth. She had no children.

Captain and Mrs. MacGregor on their wedding day, August 1915
Montgomery and Edeline MacGregor married in a simple yet elegant church ceremony in Edeline's hometown during his leave. Out of fears of tensions between Montgomery's communist friends and Edeline's parents, they chose to have a party in London with all their political friends before he returned to the front.

April 2nd, 1919, Edinburgh, Scotland
Tumblr media
Montgomery’s father had died only hours after Byron arrived at the MacGregor home days prior. He hadn’t known the late Mr. MacGregor, but he felt for the family. He couldn’t imagine how they felt.
Montgomery was devastated, aimlessly wandering the house or sitting and staring at the ground. His mother had recovered, still weak, but would live. Edeline on the other hand… Byron didn’t know. Some hours she was well enough to speak and sit up, others she would have violent fits, coughing up blood.
“She won’t live,” the Scot whispered.
Byron swallowed. “You’re giving up hope?”
“No. Her body is exhausted. It’s a miracle she’s lasted this long. She knows it too.” He blinked tears from his eyes. “She won’t last the night.”
Tumblr media
He, Montgomery, and Elspeth sat quietly. It was an odd thing, holding vigil. They were waiting for his sister to die. All he could think of was Alexander’s death, how unsettling his last breath was, the way he sunk into the cot, skin yellowed. Dead people didn’t look asleep. They just looked dead.
Tumblr media
Then the door banged loudly. Elspeth looked incredulous.
“Who is knocking at 11 at night?”
Byron stood. “I’ll see,” he muttered after one glance at Montgomery. The poor man couldn’t move.
To his shock, Rebecca and Giselle walked through the doorway, dressed in black.
“Mama? Giselle?”
Rebecca nodded. “We took the quickest train.”
He stared at both of them. Why were they dressed in black? Why did Giselle look so sullen? Why did his mother look as if the light had disappeared from her eyes?
Tumblr media
“...Why are you dressed in black, Edeline is not yet dead. How is father? Has he reco-” He broke off, staring at the tears in his mother’s eyes. “No,” he gasped, feeling faint, tears pooling in his eyes. “No, don’t tell me-”
Rebecca took her son in her arms as he began to cried. “He passed peacefully,” she soothed. “I was holding his hand.”
Byron couldn’t think. He couldn’t breathe. Memories of his father ran through his head and the thought of being the only male Walsh in his family was horrifying.
“My fuckin’ God!” A shrill voice screamed, ruining the moment.
Byron and Rebecca stepped back, stunned by the voice. Giselle looked blindsided by the language.
“That’s Elspeth,” he muttered, panicking seizing his body as he rushed toward the stairs. “Something’s happening.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rebecca screamed the moment she opened the door. Edeline was seizing on the bed, violently hacking blood, staining her nightgown and bedsheets. Montgomery was crying and yelling, begging her to stop as Elspeth stood spellbound, too bound by shock to move. Giselle began to weep, looking away from her sister’s body, and Byron wept, unsure of what to do, still desolate from the news of his father’s death. No, Edeline couldn’t die. Lord, no. Please.
And then all was still.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Byron blinked and he saw Montgomery falling to his knees and sobbing into the bed. He blinked and stared at Edeline’s blood-covered face and chest. She was dead.

Lookbook for the teenage Edeline! She has come far from the pinks and blues her mother dressed in and still refuses to wear outfits that are mostly pink. After discovering how much she loved green, there was no going back, though Rebecca didn't mind at all—her eldest look beautiful in the color. As before, her upper-middle-class upbringing reflects in her clothes, especially as she will attend finishing school away from her family.

February 15th, 1914, Oxford, England
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shortly after Byron’s 19th birthday, he received a telegram from his parents. At first, he assumed it was late birthday wishes, but as he read the letter, all the color fell from his face, and his throat closed.
His grandmother was on her deathbed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everyone was standing outside of her bedroom when Byron finally arrived home in various states of grief. He looked at his family, unsure what to do or say.
Edeline, who seemed the most composed, looked at her brother. “Go in there. She doesn’t have long.”
He only nodded and opened the door to his grandmother’s bedroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rose was lying on the bed, eyes closed. She looked so much weaker than the last time he’d seen her, which had been Christmas. Carefully, he shut the door behind him and knelt next to the bed.
“Hello, Granny.”
Rose opened her eyes to her youngest grandson. “You’re late.”
He chuckled. “I know. I’m sorry.”
“And here I am, dying. To think my husband died in the room next to this, my younger son died in the bedroom across… which became you and Alexander’s room.”
“I suppose such things are life.”
She frowned as he placed his hand over hers. “I would have liked to have seen you, Alexander, and Edeline graduate university.”
“I wish so too.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Granny?” Byron whispered, tears pooling in his eyes.
“What is it, my dear?”
“I have a confession to make.”
Rose let out a deep sigh. “I suppose I should hear it. I am on my deathbed.”
He swallowed. “...Well, you know how Mama and Papa named me after Lord Byron?”
“Yes. I objected to it when they first told me.”
He couldn’t help but chuckle in the face of tears. “...I am a bit like him after all.”
“You’re a poet?”
“No. No…. I mean in terms of…”
“Sex?”
He blushed, his face growing hot. “...Yes,” he whispered, looking down.
Rose almost looked amused. “I told your parents it would be a curse to name you after him, though I suspected something after the way you went on about that friend of yours at Willow Creek.”
He felt shameful.
“Byron.”
He looked into her eyes.
“Be careful, darling. You’ll break your parents’ hearts if you get into trouble or if they find out. All the great writers, poets, and artists tended to be peculiar. I know you’ll amount to great things, Byron.”
“You’re not disgusted?”
“I’m dying, dear. What’s the point?”
Tears spilled onto his cheeks. “I am going to miss you so much, Granny.”
“I will too,” she whispered, laying her head back and closing her eyes.
He watched her take two more breaths before she stopped, her body sinking into the bed and her hand going limp in his. Byron stood up slowly, wiping the tears from his face to tell his family that their grandmother was dead.

Byron, Edeline, Giselle, and Alexander in their parents' foyer, Summer 1915
Shortly before Alexander had to return to the front, Edeline to London, and Byron and Giselle to school, Peter and Rebecca had their four children pose for a portrait.

Summer 1913, Newcrest, England
Tumblr media
Summer came again to Newcrest, and all the Walsh children came home for the summer. As Rose grew weaker, the less alone time she had to herself. She loved that her grandchildren were spending every waking moment with her, Edeline even temporarily dropping out of school to be with her. On the other hand, she wouldn’t have minded a moment’s peace, alone. But she supposed it was what happened when you were dying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Edeline surprised the rest of her family by introducing Montgomery, who came down from London with her. Peter and Rebecca were shocked, having no idea their eldest daughter was seeing someone to begin with (she wouldn’t dare admit that they lived together) Rebecca warmed up to him very quickly, finding the fact he was a doctor agreeable as an income (they didn’t need to know he was a communist.) Peter was less than sure. His daughter had been seeing him for over a year and hadn’t told anybody? It seemed very strange.
Tumblr media
Though as the days passed, Peter’s opinion of Montgomery improved, finding him to be well-educated and kind, even if some of his remarks made the Tory Peter uncomfortable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Giselle enjoyed the summer especially and having turned 13 in May, she felt like nothing could ever go wrong… other than her grandmother dying. She and Francesca spent every day with each other, whether it was going to each other’s house or swimming at the local pond not far from their houses—something she went lengths to keep secret from her mother, who would lose her head if she learned of her youngest daughter's outdoor activities.

June 1915, London, England
Tumblr media
Spring quickly came, and Edeline finally graduated from the London School of Medicine for Women. She was the salutatorian, and her teachers had encouraged to enroll at London University to finish her medical degree, but duty called, and when a job of training volunteers to nurse was offered, Edeline quickly took up the assignment.
Tumblr media
Unlike other VAD women, she was being paid since she was in charge of them all, in charge of training the women, being the only one with academic medical training. It was bloody, grueling work, but she found herself enjoying it, feeling important to be useful. It kept her mind off her worries about her fiancé and brother, about the horrors of war, and her impending wedding

Second Lieutenant A. Walsh in uniform before leaving for France, August 1914
Alexander almost instantly signed up for the Army, his internship with his father long forgotten over God and country. Peter and Rebecca supported his entering the war while Byron and Giselle were indifferent.

Captain M. MacGregor, M.D and Miss Edeline Walsh’s engagement portrait, August 1914
Montgomery and Edeline shortly announced their engagement after Montgomery was told he was to be sent to the front lines as part of the Medical Corps. He had no interest in fighting, but he wasn’t stubborn enough to outright refuse—he could already go to prison for being a communist, he didn’t need to give another reason for his arrest.

Mr. Alexander Walsh, his parents, and younger sister at his graduation from Liverpool University, June 1914
Alexander graduated from Liverpool University with a degree in pre-law, on set to intern at his father’s firm and take the bar, rather than continue to law school as his father and grandfather had not gone.
Tumblr media
Mr. Byron Walsh, elder sister Miss Edeline Walsh, and her beau Dr. Montgomery MacGregor at his graduation from Exeter College, Oxford University, June 1914
Unfortunately for the Walshes, Byron and Alexander’s graduations were on the same day, meaning only Edeline and her partner Montgomery were able to attend his, London being much closer to Oxford. Byron graduated at the top of his class with degrees in linguistics and philology. The fact his parents weren’t able to come didn’t bother him much, considering he was staying on at Exeter for his dual master's degrees in linguistics and philology. In his free time, he’d taken up a part-time job translating books for international publications and translating foreign books into English.

Late November 1918, Edinburgh, Scotland
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It made Byron very glad to see his sister. He hadn’t seen her since Alexander’s funeral, and it was nice to see her in a joyful context. The war was over!
“Oh, you’ll love Edinburgh, Byron,” Edeline said the moment they stopped hugging. “It’s so beautiful and full of history. And I think it would fit perfectly with your obsession with languages and dialects.”
“It’s not an obsession.”
“You wrote one of your master’s thesis on how forced social isolation affects languages and accents. And how many languages can you speak again?”
“Seventeen.”
Elspeth looked shocked. “Really?”
“I’m a polyglot. I can speak English, Welsh, Gaelic, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Latin, Greek, Hungarian, Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Old English, and Hebrew in varying degrees of fluency. I also can read and translate Aramaic and Akkadian, but my speaking isn’t wonderful. Currently learning Irish and Common Britontic.”
 “...Why?”
“I’m a linguist and philologist. My specialties are language histories of the British Isles and Babylonia. Eventually, I’d like to learn the early forms of Irish.”
“My brother has always been a genius when it comes to languages."
Tumblr media
Although Mr. and Mrs. MacGregor were his sister’s in-laws, he didn’t really know them, and the fact they had invited him to stay before returning home was touching. The cottage was small but homely, and he understood why Edeline and and Montgomery had sold their London townhouse for Scotland. Beginning in the spring, she would finish her medical degree at the University of Edinburgh while Montgomery was going to set up a clinic for the poorer people of the city with some of his friends from school.
Tumblr media
He was happy for his sister, of course he was. But he felt lost. Most of his adult life was spent in school or at war. He didn’t know what he wanted with his life. Sure, returning to university to obtain his doctorate had been in the back of his mind, but what after that?
