We have been Betrayed, Backstabbed, Bamboozled: The Future of Elysian Eclipse
So, if you are active on our Discord, you know that EE is made in the Unity Engine and the CEO just decided to massively fuck over all the devs who are using it...
Callum Upton made a great video explaining the situation:
youtube
But it gets even worse!
Unity since defended themselves, saying that these fees are only affecting 10% of their customers, because of the $200k and $1m thresholds, so Indie devs don't have to worry about that.
…which isn't true:
Unity Plus
They aren't only introducing these fees but also changed the regular pricing plans! They just removed "Unity Plus" which is the lowest tier and costs about $50/month per dev with taxes. This is what most indies use. The next higher tier costs QUADROUPLE that amount and is also required to remove the universally loathed "made with Unity" splash screen. Oh! And if you have the personal tier, you won't be able to use Unity offline anymore! It now needs to do a license check every 3 days to function!
Unity's Ad Service
The fees will hit devs that do free-to-play mobile stuff especially hard, since they still have to pay the fees even when the players don't buy anything, meaning they could end up owing Unity more than they make in income. But what's this? If you use Unity's advertising service for your game, you will get a discount on the fees! The majority of mobile games run on Unity, meaning they are trying to monopolize the mobile ad market with this!
Publishers
Elysian Eclipse has caught the interest of a really big studio and publisher, who is considering to handle the marketing and publishing for the game. They are obviously planning to make the game come out big with sales, going beyond Unity's thresholds. But since the game is made in Unity, they probably now have to reconsider that carefully, since that would cause a massive amount of fees with Unity's new pricing model. So any game using Unity is now an instant turn-off for publishers, also massively hurting indie devs who don't reach that income threshold yet.
Tumblr media
What will happen now?
So, Unity can't be trusted anymore and should be seen as a major threat to us and the gaming industry. Even if they walk back on some of these decisions, what has been said, has been said. They showed that they don't care about destroying thousands of games, as long as it nets them profit, so who knows what they are going to do next?
I will pause the development of Elysian Eclipse and release the Patreon demo, including all the prototypes like Aquatic Stage for free today. I canceled my subscription and it will run out next year, so Unity isn't getting a single cent from my games anymore.
Unreal Eclipse?
In the meantime I'll focus on improving my C++ skills, so I can work more effectively in Unreal Engine 5. Unreal is the current industry leader, offering much better solutions for graphics and performance for 3D games. It is also partially open source and completely free until you reach $1 million in revenue.
It is unlikely that I will be able to just translate the game from C# to C++ and port it over, since it is using a lot of engine-specific features. This basically means, we will start from scratch... I can't tell yet how much work this will be or in what ways the game will change.
But one thing, you can always be certain of: I will NEVER BETRAY MY DREAM. I will finish this project, no matter who or what stands in my way. I hope you will continue to support me on this journey.
That being said,
FUCK JOHN RICCITIELLO!!
Fucking cunt.

[Prototype Profile] Kokonoe
“Adept at crafting components, traps, and high-tech weaponry including rockets and lasers. She is proficient at weaving an escape-proof net of destruction on the battlefield that deals devastating damage.”
Time to take a look at what Kokonoe will be capable of in Entropy Effect! As with Hibiki, I'm not very familiar with playing as or against Kokonoe, so if any of you play her I would love to hear your thoughts on what we see in this video!
It's been a few days since my last Entropy Effect post, so we've gotten a lot more information about the game. I haven't decided how much of the game I'll cover, so I'm not sure what to share here... if you have any opinions on that, please do share with me!
Now, onto her gameplay.
The first thing I noticed was that her attacks look very elemental- though this may just be in my head. The first moves they show us in this video include this watergun-looking weapon that sort of reminds me of the freeze ray in her Armament No. 3 "Absolute Zero v.4.32" (236C.)
Tumblr media
We also see her wielding fire, more generally through the explosions caused by her rockets, but also as a part of her Armament No. 9 "Aerial Powerdrive: Solid Wheel v3.37" (236B) which has been brought over for her Entropy Effect kit!
Tumblr media
I guess Kokonoe's always been a bit of a subtle elementalist fighter, I just never realized it! I always associated her with her rockets and gravitons pretty exclusively. It's a cool thing to notice as a small connection between her and all the elemental magic Nine uses. I like it.
Speaking of returning moves, we also see her Armament No.5 "Banishing Rays v3.10" (22A/B) being used during her more advanced combos.
Tumblr media
Each character showcased in these promotional videos so far has had a unique character skill shown off as well. At first glance, Kokonoe's seems to be her Exceed Accel, Armament No.11 "Full Metal Heavy Weapon v2.05."
Tumblr media
However, the animation only includes the "rocket launcher strapped to her back" half of the attack, and it's aerial version only recreates the rockets, without the launcher.
Tumblr media
The name of this ability in Entropy Effect is Armament No.11.1 v2.19 "Furious Decimator Avalanche." I really like this! It shows an attention to detail from the EE team that I appreciate; sampling the BB Armament No.11 move for part of the attack, creating a whole ability/skill inspired by it, and naming it as if its another iteration of the weapon that Kokonoe's testing/experimenting with.
We're definitely 3/3 with wins for the dev team on remixes of character's movesets with these skills, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to see what else they come up with.

Tank Man, I've seen several sources claiming that the Brazilian Army is looking into modernizing and restarting the EE-T1 Osório tank project. What are your thoughts on the vehicle itself? And what do you think the supposed modernization program should focus on?
Tumblr media
One of the sources: https://www.zona-militar.com/en/2024/03/10/the-brazilian-army-will-refurbish-the-prototypes-of-the-ee-t1-osorio-tank/
I have no idea how credible this is, btw, but it seems interesting to discuss nonetheless.
The tank seems like it would have been a decent competitor for the time, competing alongside tanks like the T-80 or the Early Leopard models or the original M1 Abrams. It boasted a pretty capable level of equipment at an extremely competitive price for the time.
Any prospective modernization program should be focused on the same things that later developments of the Abrams, Leopard, and T-80 have. Namely, those being improvements to active and passive armor, weaponry, and C4I equipment. In fact, I would recommend that the EE-T1 take nearly the same modernization path as the T-80, given their similarities.

The Co-Worker, Elise/Elijah/Eli Mergersa (El-eeze/Eh-lie-jah/El-ee Mer-ger-sa) (all versions nicknamed Ellie) [F/M/NB]: They’re your closest co-worker, and live in the same company-provided apartment as you. You probably wouldn’t call them your friend, but their presence at the office does provide a familiar comfort. Ellie is naturally calm, but not indifferent. Their logical persona is what probably got them hired. Order matters to them, but only because it benefits everyone live peacefully, and definitely not because they're scared of authority figures such as, let's say, Orenic.
If on the romantic route: Friends to Lovers (theme: trust, reliance)
Appearance: Ellie is 187 cm/6 ft 2 in tall. They are of Ethiopian descent (Oromo people). Their eyes are a dark brown. They have a rich, earthy brown skin tone. Their hair is often worn naturally; Elise’s afro scrapes her neck while Elijah and Eli’s afro is just above their ears. They have a solid body with a little bit of a chubby tummy, and despite being tall, they're light on their feet.
The Scientist, Tarali Bhujel (Ta-ra-lee Bu-jyal) [F]: She’s one of the few that knew about your existence. All Tarali's ever known is Orenic—after all, her parents worked for them, and that's what prompted her to become a scientist. Although not ignorantly stubborn, Tarali has firm beliefs she lives by, and truly thinks that her work is important. You heard her walk into your office, and you'll never forget the determined clicks of her shoes.
If on the romantic route: Strangers to Lovers, slight Enemies to Lovers (tensions ooh)
Appearance: Tarali is 173 cm/5 ft 8 in tall. She is of Nepali descent. Her eyes are a dark brown. She has a warm, russet-brown skin tone. When she smiles, Tarali has deep dimples. Her hair is a wavy black, reaching down to the waist. She often wears it up (in a bun/claw clip). Tarali has pierced ears; a simple earlobe piercing. She has a soft body type, and legs that make her look taller than she actually is. She has a faint, thin healed scar on her right hand from a bicycle accident when she was 9.
The Other, ??? [F/M/NB] (B2): They’re like you, in the sense that they are literally made by the same company. Not much is known about them.
If on romantic route: Strangers to Friends to Lovers (theme: kinship, first love)
Appearance: B2 is 178 cm/5 ft 10 in tall. They look of Turkish descent. Their eyes are a light brown. They have a tanned, cool beige skin tone. B2's caramel brown hair is slightly wavy, and in a time of bad judgement, cut it into a mullet-type style that reaches down to their collarbones. They have straight, toned body type. Orenic wasn't very creative with their android models before you.
The Spy, Haesoo Shin (Hae-soo Shin) [M]: He’s also working for Orenic, but he’s got a secret. Haesoo is part of an organization that seeks to stop whatever scheme Orenic has planned before the whole company goes downhill. His demeanor toward you is cold, but he seems to get along with the other employees just fine. You saw him once, leaving work, and he was chatting lively with some girl, too. What's his problem?
If on the romantic route: Enemies to Lovers (read: lots of regret tm)
Appearance: Haesoo is 183 cm/6 ft tall. He is of Korean descent. His eyes are dark, dark brown (appears black). He has a warm ivory/beige skin tone. Haesoo keeps his straight, black hair short, and its fluffyness is often kept back with gel (although most of the time, it doesn't work). He has a lean muscular body.
The Haywire, Ángel Valletta (Ahn-hel Val-le-tah) [NB] (A1): They’re also an android, but they’ve gone rogue. As the very first prototype of the project, Angel's seen a lot more and knows a lot more than they should, and they plan to use it to their advantage. In fact, you probably wouldn't know Angel was robotic if you happened to pass by them in the street. Have fun trying to figure them out.
If on romantic route: Strangers to Lovers (idiots in love psssst)
Appearance: Ángel is 170 cm/5 ft 7 in tall. They look of Colombian-Italian descent. Their eyes are a dark hazel color, although sometimes it looks green, depending on the light. They have tanned, olive skin with slight freckles. Their curly hair is cut to their shoulders, and layered. Angel has a tattoo of the name “Maria” beneath their left collarbone. Their body is rectangular, much to their dismay, and is very average.
All characters above are set to be in their late 20's (Ellie, Tarali: 28, Haesoo: 29) to their early 30's (Angel: 31, B2: 30).
All romance routes have elements of Forbidden Love.

top, left to right: Haesoo, Tarali, Angel, B2 (for all versions)
bottom, left to right: Elijah, Elise, Eli
Please keep in mind that these are not accurate representations of their faces, and many details (scars, hair, etc) are left out (Artbreeder is limited and tedious to use). These portraits are just vague pictures of what they may look like + to provide skin tones. In addition to these portraits, please also use the text descriptions above to help visualize the characters' appearances.

Making light work! Researchers create synthetic methane using only the sun - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/making-light-work-researchers-create-synthetic-methane-using-only-the-sun-technology-org/
Making light work! Researchers create synthetic methane using only the sun - Technology Org
A UNSW-led team have developed a process that turns CO₂ into a cleaner and greener form of methane that could reduce reliance on natural gas that fuels climate change.
Engineers at UNSW have developed a way to produce a synthetic fuel from carbon dioxide using only sunlight. The research team’s process involves utilising light and heat to induce a reaction which creates synthetic methane from CO₂.
Their research, published in EES Catalysis, could help to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
“Methane is the major component of natural gas and is already widely used as a source of fuel, but it is also a powerful greenhouse gas. Creating synthetic methane using only the sun’s natural resource is a cleaner and greener alternative for use in heavy transportation, shipping, and other specific industries where gas usage is essential,” Dr Emma Lovell says.
“By employing specific catalysts and support materials, we have demonstrated a new pathway for visible light to drive the conversion of CO₂ into methane. This not only contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions, but also adds value to the captured CO₂ by creating a valuable chemical product.”
Led by the team from the School of Chemical Engineering, Professor Rose Amal, Dr. Priyank Kumar, Dr. Emma C. Lovell, Yi Fen (Charlotte) Zhu, Associate Professor Jason Scott, Dr. Bingqiao Xie, and Dr. Jodie A. Yuwono, their work not only tackles environmental concerns, but also leverages renewable energy to power the conversion process.
The greater impact: what this all means
“Being able to directly use sunlight reduces the costs required for energy generation to facilitate the reaction. This alleviates one of the major challenges in the pursuit and application of CO₂ derived fuel, which is contingent on the availability of low-cost, low carbon energy inputs,” PhD candidate Zhu says.
The transformation of waste CO₂ into synthetic fuel creates a circular fuel economy. This means it creates a closed-loop system addressing environmental concerns and lessening reliance on fossil fuel extraction. This approach fosters sustainability by reusing carbon emissions and mitigating impact on the environment.
Affordable energy generation also plays a crucial role in this process as the direct and efficient utilisation of sunlight offsets power consumption and associated overhead costs for the reaction. This leads to reduced production costs for synthetic fuel, making it more economically viable and accessible.
Finally, the diverse chemical applications of this research extend beyond fuel production. The team is currently applying the findings to visible light-assisted CO₂ conversion into other high-value chemicals, potentially impacting a wide range of industries, from fuel production to pharmaceuticals. This versatility highlights the potential for broader innovations and solutions stemming from sustainable energy research.
“One of the most promising aspects of this research is its potential impact on industries like fuel production, cement manufacturing, biomass gasification and pharmaceuticals. I would say it represents a more sustainable fuel alternative by closing the carbon loop,” A/Prof. Scott says.
“In terms of converting the CO₂ into value-added products, this represents a much cleaner alternative than products which currently rely on fossil-fuel derived precursors for their manufacture.
“Looking ahead, we are already envisioning a new future direction.”
That direction could be an expansion of the range of carbon-based products that can be synthesised from CO₂ with high selectivity, and secondly, designing and constructing larger-scale prototype systems capable of demonstrating the light-assisted approach on an industrial scale.
“The biggest challenge lies in being able to effectively introduce the light into a larger-scale system to illuminate the particles completely. We are exploring methods such as harnessing sunlight to drive multiple phenomena simultaneously, like solar-thermal alongside light assistance,” A/Prof. Scott adds.
“Currently, we are conducting experiments at the lab scale, aiming to advance to demonstration/prototype scale within approximately a year. Following that milestone, our goal is to transition to pilot scale and ultimately to commercial/industrial scale.”

Head-to-Head: PHP vs. Java - Which Language Reigns Supreme?
Tumblr media
Head-to-Head: PHP vs. Java - Which Language Reigns Supreme? The debate between PHP and Java has long been a topic of discussion among developers, with proponents of each language advocating for its superiority in various aspects of web development, enterprise applications, and system architecture. In this head-to-head comparison, we'll delve into the strengths, weaknesses, and use cases of PHP and Java to determine which language reigns supreme in the world of software development.
Overview of PHP:
PHP, initially created as a server-side scripting language for web development, has gained widespread popularity for its simplicity, flexibility, and ease of use. Here are some key considerations regarding PHP:
Simplicity and Ease of Use:
PHP is renowned for its straightforward syntax and easy learning curve, making it accessible to beginners and experienced developers alike.
Its scripting nature allows developers to embed PHP code directly into HTML, enabling dynamic content generation and server-side processing.
Web Development Focus:
PHP is primarily designed for web development, with built-in features for processing form data, interacting with databases, and generating dynamic web pages.
It integrates seamlessly with popular web servers like Apache and Nginx and databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite.
Vibrant Ecosystem:
PHP boasts a vibrant ecosystem of frameworks, libraries, and tools that streamline web development tasks and accelerate project delivery.
Frameworks like Laravel, Symfony, and CodeIgniter provide robust MVC architecture, routing, ORM, and other features for building scalable and maintainable web applications.
Overview of Java:
Java, renowned for its platform independence, scalability, and robustness, is widely used for building enterprise-grade applications, backend systems, and large-scale distributed systems. Here are some key considerations regarding Java:
Write Once, Run Anywhere (WORA):
Java's WORA principle enables developers to write code once and run it on any platform that supports Java, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and various mobile devices.
This platform independence is achieved through the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which provides a consistent runtime environment for Java applications.
Scalability and Performance:
Java offers scalability and performance advantages, making it suitable for building large-scale enterprise applications that can handle high volumes of concurrent users and transactions.
Its robust type system, memory management features, and multithreading support contribute to improved application performance and responsiveness.
Enterprise Integration:
Java's extensive ecosystem and enterprise-grade features make it well-suited for integrating with existing systems, middleware, and enterprise solutions.
Frameworks like Spring Boot, Jakarta EE (formerly Java EE), and Apache Camel provide comprehensive support for building enterprise applications, RESTful APIs, and microservices.
Head-to-Head Comparison:
Performance:
Java generally offers better performance and scalability compared to PHP, especially for large-scale enterprise applications and systems with high concurrency requirements.
PHP's performance has improved over the years, but it may still lag behind Java in terms of raw processing power and efficiency.
Developer Productivity:
PHP's simplicity and ease of use contribute to faster development cycles and rapid prototyping, making it suitable for small to medium-sized web projects.
Java's verbose syntax and boilerplate code may require more time and effort upfront but can lead to more maintainable and scalable codebases over the long term.
Ecosystem and Tooling:
PHP has a robust ecosystem of frameworks, libraries, and tools tailored for web development, with a focus on simplicity, flexibility, and ease of use.
Java's ecosystem is broader and more diverse, catering to a wide range of use cases, including web development, enterprise integration, mobile development, and big data processing.
Use Cases and Project Requirements:
The choice between PHP and Java ultimately depends on the specific requirements, scalability needs, and performance considerations of the project at hand.
PHP may be a better fit for small to medium-sized web projects, startups, and rapid prototyping, while Java shines in large-scale enterprise applications, middleware, and mission-critical systems.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, both PHP and Java have their strengths and weaknesses, making them suitable for different types of projects and development scenarios. While PHP excels in simplicity, ease of use, and rapid development, Java boasts scalability, performance, and enterprise-grade features. The choice between PHP and Java should be based on the specific requirements, project goals, and scalability needs of the application, ensuring that developers choose the language that best aligns with their project's objectives and long-term vision. Ultimately, the language that reigns supreme depends on the context of the project and the priorities of the development team.

[Prototype Profile] Hibiki Kohaku
"A nimble assassin who wields daggers and throws darts, adept at launching surprise attacks from behind. He is capable of dismantling enemies with a flurry of rapid strikes."
I'm delayed in posting this, and at the time of writing, they already have a showcase for Mai up on their YouTube too! It looks like we may get one 'Prototype Profile' video a day for a little while. Look forward to it!
I wish I was more familiar with Hibiki's playstyle so that I could better analyze and compare his movements here. If you're more familiar with playing (as or against) Hibiki, please share your own thoughts in a reblog!
Further analysis under the cut.
I think I see some similarities, but I'm unable to properly articulate them. I think the fast-paced combat with the focus on mobility makes Hibiki a good fit for this style of gameplay in general.
I am a little disappointed by what I don't see- for example, I didn't see any reference to Double Chase, his Drive (D attacks.) I feel like that's a missed opportunity. However, like I said, I'm not particularly familiar with Hibiki's kit at this time.
I do recognize some of the cross-over moves in his animations that remind me of Shadow Dance "Hidden Phoenix" (632146C.) At the very end of the video we also see an attack reminiscent of Black Thunder "Nue" (632146D) that looks pretty cool. The moon that appears reminds me of his Astral too, but the motions don't feel the same to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like the shuriken ring attack he has going on, called Oblivion Glaive in the trailer; reminds me of his Piercing Feather (236A>A.) One of their variations seems to pursue the enemy, which I like as an addition to Hibiki's toolkit. We also see his iconic corvid motifs when he uses this new move.
Tumblr media
--
This video also shows us few of the game's enemies. We see enemies that look like Ikaruga Ninja, which we've seen in previous trailers. When hit, they seem to glitch out, supporting my understanding that the characters we play as and fight against are some kind of hologram or projection utilized by the real robotic inhabitants of the EE world. Or maybe it's some kind of simulation? When Hibiki's attacks hit the ground, even that seems to have a small glitch effect. In hindsight, I never did a post my analysis of the game's trailer, did I??? Whoops...
Tumblr media
We're also introduced to this original robotic-looking enemy. It, too, glitches when hit. In this shot you can also see the distortion to the ground from Hibiki's attack.
Tumblr media
--
I have some conflicting feelings about the game that I've discussed in a previous post. I still feel frustrated that the game doesn't even have its own damn artwork, for example.
But there's no denying that the actual gameplay visuals look great, and the combat looks quick, snappy, and fun. I'm excited to see more!

Publication drawing on contrasting elements. Has a fairly sculptural element- hardback cover creates spaces not just for printed pages but also for empty space. Means that the publications fit together as the sum of multiple parts, changing the way the reader both understands and interacts with the publication.

Embossing. Playing with how imprints can introduce 'blank' (uninked) space. In this particular example the extensive embossing across the page really brings out the texture and tactile nature of the photos placed to it.
I'm interested in how embossing could be used to create new shapes, emphasise/ change how the reader reads certain words.
Underneath is an example piece of card that Charlotte embossed using a scalpel as an example, and then an attempt I made at embossing with some letterpress letters. The print didn't exactly come out as I was hoping for (I didn't really want the outline of the lead pieces to embed as they did, and also putting the letters through the bookpress transferred some of the paint still on them which I was trying to avoid!) However I did still really like how the embossed typeface looks. I think I might try to work on this idea a bit more by having this typeface laser-cut and turned into a stencil I can emboss with.

"Because the pages are fabric the viewer has to turn and straighten them with care, making the book a slower read despite the simple text."
Considering 'user experience' of the book as part of the intentional design decisions made in prototype/ outcome development. Really like the idea of a book that pushes the typical expectations of what one looks life. Seems like a very tactile and sensory experience reading through the publication.

Embroidered text on clothing. As clothing unfolds it reveals more and more text from a poem. Makes for a very engaging and explorative piece- clothing feels like it hold personal stories and struggles.
