My thoughts on the Bryce, Azriel and Nesta HOFAS bonus chapter...

Disclaimer: as suggested by the title, the following discusses the Walmart HOFAS bonus chapter featuring Azriel, Bryce and Nesta. I haven't read the main text, so it won't feature anything related to that, but there are massive Maasverse and HOFAS spoilers ahead regardless. Please beware.

These are just my initial thoughts, not expanded upon in any substantial way and, as usual, I could always be way off the mark.

Also, yes, fair warning that I'll be mentioning the ACOTAR characters a lot. If that's not your jam, and you'd rather avoid any of the possible implications of the crossover, then I'd give this post a miss. On the other hand, if you're interested in how CC/HOFAS may affect Prythian going forward, please read on.

The Stone Mother song has me 👀 especially as the stone and water were "talking" at the start.

@cassianfanclub and @wingedblooms have already posted about the Stone Mother (here and here); @ladynightcourt3 has found the Phrygian goddess Cybele, also known as the "Mountain Mother," who sounds very relevant.

That being said, am I crazy to think Elain could have been listening in? Is Azriel stone and Elain water? His stone siphons - which Elain called beautiful, did she hear their song, as kin? - and Elain possibly as water? Was she using salt water to boost her powers, or a reflection pool to scry, and keep tabs on her sister and friend?

Or is it the space between linking worlds? Are the old gods talking?

Alternatively, could stone be referring to Nuala and Cerridwen, who are capable of manifesting stone around themselves and others (ACOTAR).

Is this what SJM meant when she said we'd see Elain in "some form" in the next book?

@psychee92 said she wished that SJM had somehow included Mr Brightside, and now I wish the same; even a mention of indie rock. 😭

Josie and Laurel - "He/god will add/increase" "(laurel) trees/victory"? Elain? Lol sorry, but it's either giving gardener, or Elain killing Hybern.

Wraith-like harmonies? After the description of Josie and Laurel's voices? It's crack, but is it a metaphor for Nuala and Cerridwen?

The musical similarities between what Juniper dances to and Prythian's music?!

Azriel's humming/singing made the shadows dance, once more suggesting that shadows dancing is a response to power, not mate bonds

The music Az liked was death metal. Could this link to any sort of metal artefact, like an iron crown for grounding? Or wyrdstone jewellery?

The glass coffin?

"Nineteenth century literature presents the glass coffin as a prison within which sleeping women are frequently mistaken for dead or vice versa." (Source). It's giving Sleeping Beauty (credit to @elriell for the OG SB theory), and a little Snow White.

Check out this tale from The Brothers Grimm, which sounds... suspiciously relevant to Elain.

@cassianfanclub also suggested that it's giving necromancer vibes, and I'd love that for Elain.

Feyre once said she could sleep for a hundred years after coming back from the Prison, right before going to the Hewn City in ACOWAR. After Elain had left the room, and before Feyre went to check in on her to find her "asleep—breathing."

Let's not forget Elain's assistance in rescuing the human COTB, Briar, from Hybern's camp.

Will Elain prick herself while weaving?

I was tired enough that I could barely summon the breath to ask, “Do you think the Cauldron made her insane?” “I think she went through something terrible,” Lucien countered carefully. “And it wouldn’t hurt to have your best healer do a thorough examination.” I rubbed my hand over my face. “All right.” My breath snagged on the words. “Tomorrow morning.” I managed a shallow nod, rallying my strength to rise from the chair. Heavy—there was an old heaviness in me. Like I could sleep for a hundred years and it wouldn’t be enough. “Please tell me,” Lucien said when I crossed the threshold into the foyer. “What the healer says. And if—if you need me for anything.” I gave him one final nod, speech suddenly beyond me. I knew Nesta still wasn’t asleep as I walked past her room. Knew she’d heard every word of our conversation thanks to that Fae hearing. And I knew she heard as I listened at Elain’s door, knocked once, and poked my head in to find her asleep—breathing. - ACOWAR, chapter 27

Azriel specifically said Nesta "beheaded" Hybern, after looking down at Truth-Teller.

This is not Azriel giving Nesta credit for the assassination. If anything he's hiding Elain's involvement.

I've said before, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has done so, but I would expect Azriel to protect his LI with silence, whoever they are.

He had to have been thinking about Elain, who I've theorised could now/soon be known as "The Shadowsinger's Knife" after she became the "knife in the dark" in Azriel's place at the end of ACOWAR.

I'm still looking into the carving of the young girl sitting on the toadstool with the hound sprawled on the ground beside her, as I find it really interesting. My initial thought was that it seemed like a convenient place to drop a mention of a garden-like fairy carving with a hound right after Bryce had quizzed Azriel about his hypothetical mate, or lack thereof (Elain being both heavily associated with plant life, thanks to her "little garden," as well as dogs, after Nesta called her one in ACOSF).

I also wonder if it has anything to do with the Czech tale that amanita muscaria - while psychoactive/toxic - are said to protect from lightning and other ill fortune. If this is correct, it reminds me a little of the markings - wyrdmarks - on the Archeron cottage.

I don't know where Bryce and co were walking, as I have only read this bonus chapter and the prologue, but given it was carved on an underground wall, and I suspect that there are underground portals in at least the Hewn City and the Prison, and maybe the waterways... could it have been for protection against the invading lightning Asteri? Or did the Asteri (Daglan?) put them there to protect against Thunderbirds, or whatever Hunt is?

Maybe Bryce hadn't been sent there by Urd? Who then? Was @silverlinedeyes right all along?

The mention of pleasure halls seems like a call back to Azriel's bonus chapter, but it's also likely that they aren't all brothels (see Rita's).

Azriel listening closely about Nesta now liking being Fae; he could extrapolate her responses to Elain. Maybe she's no longer miserable, and in need of their pity. And maybe she's changed her mind from ACOFAS, when she said to Feyre "I don't want a mate, I don't want a male."

Azriel said "no" to whether or not he has a mate rather quickly. Hmm... the shadowsinger doth protest too much?

It's also potentially important that Nesta said "yes, WE are" curious about Azriel's mate status. Her, Azriel and most of the fandom! 😂

"Okay, okay," Bryce said. "But it'd be cool to know something about your world. Or about you." They were both silent. Bryce asked Nesta, "You have a mate, right?" She nodded to Azriel. "Do you?" "No." Azriel said quickly, flatly. "A partner or spouse?" "No." Bryce sighed. "Okay, then." Azriel's wings twitched. "You're incurably nosy." "I think that's the nicest thing you've said about me." Bryce winked at him. "Look, I just... I'm curious. Aren't you?" Azriel didn't answer, but Nesta said, "Yes. We are." - HOFAS, Bryce, Azriel and Nesta bonus chapter

All in all, while there were no overt mentions of Elain - and really, why would SJM do that in a series that wasn't Elain's own - imo we got the Elain-shaped holes in the text that I was hoping for, and I can't wait to see if there are any more in the full book.

Why Elriel is most definitely a Sleeping Beauty Retelling!

Since this was brought up a few days ago I cannot get the idea out my head that Sarah is basing Elriel’s story on Sleeping Beauty, and now we know she hid crumbs in her other books, alongside a quick browse of her pinterest boards it seems more and more likely! Especially since she loves her retellings.

A daughter was born, and they called her Aurora. Yes, they named her after the dawn for she filled their lives with sunshine. 

Listen well, all of you. The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who know her. She'll walk in springtime wherever she goes!

There are so many parallels between Elain and Aurora, they are both beloved by all, kind creatures who thrive in springtime. Aurora is named for after the dawn because she filled their lives with sunshine, A) tell me this isn’t Elain and B) the meaning of her name;

Elaine as a girl's name is of Greek origin meaning "sun ray or shining light".

Yet another parallel is Aurora believing they still treat her as a child, who does that remind you of?

Oh, dear. Why do they still treat me like a child? 

Even if love is full of thorns, I’d still embrace it. I know that in between those thorns there is a rose worth all the pain.

Could this be any more spot on? We have spoken extensively about Elains, not only willingness to get her hands dirty but the pleasure she derives from creating something beautiful from her labour. If this isn’t a metaphor for Azriel and their future situation I don’t know what is... 

This is very important, it keeps getting brought back up in text to show us Elain is going to fight through the bad to get to what she wants. Her hands might bruise and bloody in the process but she will to do it to enjoy the fruits of her labour.

Which leads me to why even further than a Sleeping Beauty retelling I think it will be Elain saving Azriel and breaking a curse/spell. Let us look to SJM’s pinterest board shall we!

These are just a few of the SB reminiscent pins she has saved, one of the more recent ones in the bottom right. Notice it is the girl saving the man, tell me you do not get immediate Elriel vibes from that, the roses, the colours.

There also seems to be a lot of cursed/chained art too, I definitely think something is going to happen to Azriel that Elain has to save him from, my best guess would be Koschei. 

Elain’s story thus far has heavily emphasised on choice, as we have seen through her interactions with Lucien and their bond overall, hence why I think it will be her making the choice to save him rather than him coming for her.

He has already saved her, it is time for her to shine. It would also grant her the opportunity to explore her own agency, and not what is expected of her.

 A ray of hope there still may be in this, the gift I give to thee. Not in death, but just in sleep, the fateful prophecy you’ll keep, and from this slumber you shall wake, when true love’s kiss, the spell shall break.

I think that it is interesting considering she is a seer, that Sleeping Beauty has so many references to visions, fate and so on, after the Azriel POV where we are shown he clearly believes it is fate that three sisters would all fall for three bothers.

Almost like it is... Fate. 

This will be the ultimate moment where Elain gets to decide her future and potentially follow her own fate. Not to mention we know the Cauldron loves Elain and gifted her with her abilities, could this be another tie-in, gifting her the ability to wake/heal Azriel? 

But see the gracious whim of fate - why, 'tis the self-same peasant maid, who won the heart of our noble prince but yesterday. She is indeed, most wondrous fair, gold of sunshine in her hair, Lips that shame the red rose, in ageless sleep, she finds repose. The years roll by, but a hundred years to a steadfast heart, are but a day. And now, the gates of a dungeon part, and our prince is free to go his way. Off he rides, on his noble steed, a valiant figure, straight and tall! To wake his love, with love's first kiss, and prove that true love conquers all! 

Love’s first kiss? Could this be why she didn’t allow them to kiss in the hallway... Anything is possible but the parallels are certainly interesting at this point you can’t deny! 

Also here are a few more little crumbs she could have been planting through the series, the colours we most see Elain in are pinks and blues and the most run along joke through the movie is her dress being changed from one colour to the other... Nothing major but certainly interesting.

These were by no means the only references to her wearing those colours I am just trying to be brief. 

Not to mention Roses really took a bigger role in ACOSF in regards to associating them with Elain, while she certainly had past references to them before but adding in her fathers gifts and Azriels gift both being roses. Hmmmmmmm.

There was a few more little things but I would love to hear everyone else’s thoughts!!!! If not SB what retelling would you think? I am a die hard Hades/Persephone fan so I am sad that is already been done because LBR they are perfect for it hahah

I read your post about an elriel book being sleeping beauty influenced with evidence from sjm’s Pinterest, and I looked at her Pinterest and she has two boards made 4 years ago, which is when she was brainstorming storylines for the new books I think, titled Hades and A Faraway land. Could be random boards, but the faraway land one has A LOT of sleeping beauty pins that fit with your theory and the other reminded me of nessian so... Im a gwynriel rn but I like discussing other theories and ships

Hey! A few things, boards can be made years ago and still add new things too, her ACOTAR one is always changing you can see all her newer ones up to a redhead with short hair and the brightest blue eyes, and look how Vassa turned up in acosf!

Some are new and some are older, they will be at least three years old because it’s taken three years just to have one book come out LOL

Not to mention Sarah already confirmed that she started planning the Elain book during ACOMAF when Elain and Nesta came back on the scene so yes they will be olddddd, shes been planning it for years! 😁✨👏🏻 So idk seems very possible to me wooohoooo

🥀Sleeping Beauty Retelling + Elriel  Part One  🥀

If you haven’t already read the first part you will need too as this is just an add ons/summary of the theory.

I did some research in to Koschei and discovered the following;

“In other tales, Koschei can cast a sleep spell that can be broken by playing an enchanted gusli.” 

A sleep spell? Almost like one that occurs in Sleeping Beauty, I don’t think it is a coincidence that she has inordinate amounts of SB art reference on Pinterest and she introduced Koschei who is known for casting curse, and who ENTRAPS a love interest.

“The most common feature of tales involving Koschei is a spell which prevents him from being killed.  [...] Usually he takes the role of a malevolent rival father figure, who competes for (or entraps) a male hero's love interest.”

The more and more you deep dive in to the theory the more things align.

Originally I had found four pictures but as I went further down when I wasn’t in a rush the more I found. She has countless SB imagery, whether that is like the above, or faeries, roses, spinning wheels etc... 

The second image was pinned four times.

“He whispered in her ear, “They say your sister Elain is the beauty,”

Both Elain and Azriel are considered to be the beauties of their circle, so realistically it could be either, as I said last time I would love for it to be Elain who saves him.

“In the gloom of the cottage, there sat a large spinning wheel, cracked and dulled with age. And before that ancient spinning wheel, her back to me, sat the Weaver.”

I think they already touched upon him waking her from murky state she was in post Cauldron. 

“But Azriel nodded. “You knew,” he said to Elain. “About the young queen turning into a crone.”

Elain blinked and blinked, eyes clearing again. As if the understanding, our understanding … it freed her from whatever murky realm she’d been in.”

“Nesta said, “Then you will die.” Azriel only repeated, rage glazing that stare, “I’m getting her back.”

So I think they will bring it full circle but having Elain wake him from a curse/spell, and save him. It would bring their whole relationship full circle beautifully and would cap of her ARC of choosing her own path and exploring her own choices.

I think there are a few images that give me that vibe for sure! Going back to the theory of the 8th Court it could be easily linked that he gets stuck down there with them, and when she saves him she frees the other members of the court alongside him. A lot of these theories easily tie in to each other to be fair.

In summary:

Their names mirroring each other.

The sheer amount of Aurora/Elain parallels (Light, Roses/Thorns, Being treated like a child.)

Elain Pink/Blue Gowns      [Colour Theory] [8th Court/Dusk Court]

Prophecies/Fate Parallels

Aurora’s alia “Briar Rose” & Elriel rescue a woman called Briar in ACOWAR + the constant rose imagery for Elain

“Sword of Truth”   &    “Truth-Teller”

In conclusion I am more and more convinced that Elriel are a Sleeping Beauty retelling and Koschei will curse one of them and until SJM says otherwise I will die on this hill.

Hi! I just saw some people saying that Elriel sleeping beauty theory is basically debunked because SJM doesn't like the movie.. but wasn't she talking specifically about the disney version of the movie? Plus Throne of Glass was literally inspired by the Cinderella soundtrack so I don't see how SJM not liking disney's sleeping beauty leads to the theory being discredited?

Hey bub! I mean it doesn’t at all, she doesn’t like the movie? Okay so? but she has been pinning tons of Sleeping beauty art, specifically with the tag. So at the very least she appreciates the art or story in general and considering her books are based on very loose retellings it is truly circumstantial thought that it debunks anything lol

Also the SB theory is just that, a fun theory based on parallels are people really going to the effort of debunking it?? LORD have mercy.

Hi! Hope you're doing well ☺️ thank you for all your theories and thoughts. I'm pro Elriel and Elaine, but I love that you don't hold any animosity towards people who ship them with other people (I just don't see the point y'know, to each their own)

I'm sorry if you've already answered this, but do you have any thoughts about what the deal that Papa Archeron made is? I've really been thinking through the whole sleeping beauty theory, and I agree that it fits.

So I wonder, because I think if it was their mother she would 100% give one of her kids to Koschei, Elain or Feyre but not Nesta. But their dad, although not father of the year, is an honest good person. So I wonder if he would make a loophole in the same way a bargain can be worked around. And do you think his deal will be relevant to Elain's or Vassa's story (because I guess she sort of is the unofficial honorary 4th daughter? 🤔).

If the deal is in Elain's book, I wonder if it could somehow go: "my daughter or my daughter's lover will have to do this for you, and if she doesn't, one of them will fall asleep forever. Only true loves kiss can awaken them".

Of course not, someones love of a character or ship does not make them any less worthy of basic decency and respect. I wish the fandom could be a lot more understanding of each others preferences but ehh it is what it is... I completely agree to each their own. 

I don’t believe I have. Ohhh but how interesting I hadn’t thought about it or the connection to my Sleeping Beauty theory but that certainly is interesting. I could see them connecting/adding some ties & or parallels between Elain and Vassa stories, especially if Vassa/Lucien is to take over the next book/future books it would connect us to her more. 

Oh could you imagine the heartbreak, the tension. IMAGINE ELAIN SETTING OUT FOR TRUE LOVES KISS TO AZRIEL. ICONIC.

For a retelling for elriel Id rather have a gender bent Sleeping Beauty than Helen of Troy. Im just being a nerd but having studied the Iliad and Aeneid Helen and Paris are def not a paragon of love. In fact Helen and Paris individually are problematic and the exact opposite of who Id want Elain and Az modeled after. And I dislike romanticizations of Helen and Paris relationship but thats again me being a nerd. But Sleeping Beauty has more room to be twisted interestingly and appropriately

All the retellings will be loosely based anyways but I understand what you mean, in regards to HOT.

But I have always been here for gender bent Elriel x SB, Like her being the one who goes to save him and gives him tlk because it would give her the opportunity to choose her own fate and him to get to see her choose him for himself and his self deprecating self.

So yes I am down for that!

I don't feel that she trashed it by any means lol She literally pinned it all over her pinterest, she clearly likes the vibe or she wouldn't have even if she didn't enjoy the animation... I am sure here are plenty more tales they resemble we've talked about Helen of Troy retellings etc!

Elriel – Azriel POV. Azriel reminisces that he did not duel for Mor because she did not choose for him to do so. A Blood Duel can only occur if Elain and Azriel choose each other, and fight to stay together against anything/anyone trying to tear them apart. What if Elain wields Truth-Teller to fight Koshchei or Beron to free Azriel? He will finally accept the truth. True Love is the most powerful bond that supersedes any other imposed curse/bond.

i definitely think there will be a very distinguished and precise moment where she has to make a choice, about who and what she wants for her life. And we know who that is going to be, and I am sure it is going to be a heart-wrenching scene for us and for Azriel...

Especially if we get a True Loves Kiss/SB theme, ahhhhh would be so epic!

Omg I just saw you post about elriel being a retelling of SB and I would like to start off by saying that I 10000000000000000% agree with you. ALSO I NOTICED SOMETHING ABOUT ELRIEL. I'll start: Elain gets a badass Mulan hair chopping off scene. Nothing on Sarah but I feel like it's so rare that a female character has short hair. I can barely manage my medium length poof mop, so I can't imagine it's fun in a battle 😌

Right lowkey I love the SB theory and her saving him from a curse but if we were to take it like, idk, one step darker lets say Azriel dies. 

Elain pleads with Koschei and makes a deal that brings him back and maybe she has to sacrifice something... IDK, the bond? Maybe she gives him half the years she was suppose to live, OR if you’ve watched OUAT were Snowing have that amazing moment where snow breaks her heart in half and gives it him to come back to life, because it was always his anyways and YEAH unlikely but!!!

Yes I did! And there are so many that actually specifically say SB, so I don’t think there is much doubt that she was certainly saving a lot of them ♡ I think there is a very high chance that it will be Elriel, as you know! Wohooo!
