Frances Hardinge - Island of Whispers
Illustrated by Emily Gravett
This is, in the most literal sense, a ghost story.
Milo lives on an island where the dead will stick around as dangerous ghosts if they aren't helped to move on. His father is the one who ferries them to the island of the dead, assisted by his brother. When his father is killed Milo must make a trip by himself to ensure that the dead can move on.
It's a story about death and grief, and love and memories, and how being soft can be dangerous but also worth doing. It's a story about the danger of ghosts and a powerful but grieving man and greedy magicians. There are rules that must be obeyed to stay safe on the journey to the island, and although they are quite arbitrary, they are followed in a consistent way that makes them believable in the context of the story.
A lovely novella with illustrations in a style that suits the tone of the book. Recommended.

'Island of Whispers' by Frances Hardinge and illustrated by Emily Gravett
One of my auto-read authors!
The two books I've read so far from Hardinge have been amazing ('A Face Like Glass' and the excellent audiobook of 'Cuckoo Song'). I'm looking forward to making it three for three with 'Island of Whispers'!

10 Cats by Emily Gravett
Ten curious and expressive cats tip over three cans of paint and make a mess!
Tumblr media
Skills
Background Knowledge: Counting and number identification: help your child point out and count the specified cats on each 2-page spread (such as 3 cats with stripes). Have them identify the numbers.
Also, color mixing: red and yellow make orange; blue and yellow make green; red and blue make purple.
Vocabulary: The words for colors and numbers. Also, point out and discuss the differences between the dots, blotches, spots, etc. in the illustrations.
Practices
Talking: Talk with your child about what is happening in the pictures. What is each of the cats doing? What is happening on the last, wordless, 2-page spread?
Talk about how the mother cat is carrying her kitten. This can lead into a discussion of how different animals carry their young (The board book Mommy, Carry Me Please! by Jane Cabrera, has many good examples.)
Extend the book with color mixing!
Allow your child to use washable finger paints to mix colors. This facilitates the early literacy practice of writing!
Another way to mix colors is to have the colors “walk” from one cup to the next as in this fascinating activity:
Walking Colors
You will need six clear cups, water, and red, yellow and blue food coloring.
Fill three of the cups half full with water. Add a drop of red food coloring to one cup of water, a drop of blue to another, and yellow to a third.
Leave the other three cups empty.
Tumblr media
Arrange your cups as shown, alternating the cups with colored water and the empty cups.
Cut a paper towel into six strips. Place each strip so it has one end in a cup with colored water and the other end in an empty cup.
Tumblr media
Link all the cups as shown. The colored water will immediately begin “walking” up the strips from the colored water to the empty cup.
Within a few hours, the empty cups will have the mixed colors of orange, green and purple!

My 4 year old is really interested in math right now. Do you have any recs for fun picture books about math concepts?
DIRT CHEAP by Mark Hoffmann, about a young entrepreneur, with money concepts
JEFFERSON MEASURES A MOOSE by Mara Rockliff, about measuring things (as well as history! and animals! but there is a lot of measuring)
MILLIONS OF CATS by Wanda Gag - a classic, about, well, millions and billions of cats!
ONE GRAIN OF RICE by Demi - a folktale about exponential growth. (I have not read this in a long time and I am not vouching for whether or not it is problematic in a cultural appropriation-ish way, I have no recollection of any particulars, I just know it's about exponential growth!)
INFINITY AND ME by Kate Hosford - About infinity!
THE RABBIT PROBLEM by Emily Gravett - about rapidly multiplying rabbits
LEMONADE IN WINTER by Emily Jenkins - about two kids counting money (that's the subtitle even!)
There are also a fair number of nonfiction biographies about a diverse range of mathematicians, coders, etc, that encourage the "math is cool for all kinds of people" idea -- because sometimes when kiddos start school, they get the bad idea that "math is hard" or "girls don't like math" or whatever implanted in their heads. So might be nice to preemptively block that!
