Dark Royalty Core Playlist
People seemed to really like the Beltane playlist so I thought I’d post more of my playlists! I started making this one when I learned that the Dark Royalty Aesthetic was a thing, and I am so happy that it is a thing! It’s now one of my favorite aesthetics, and it got me into more traditional classical music. This is intended to be a “master playlist” -- some of these pieces are taken from oliviaalee on youtube, but many are favorites of mine.

virtual technology and accessibility for hard of hearing and visually impaired
Tumblr media
Cal State Northridge (CSUN) Center on Disabilities hosts their 35th Assistive Technology Conference next week, but with a host of cancellations due to coronavirus travel concerns, there have been calls to make the conference virtual. I didn’t know about the conference until I came across (via) a discussion on the difficulties in making online sessions accessible by Christian Vogler whose research includes the 2013 joint paper “Mixed Local and Remote Participation in Teleconferences from a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Perspective.”
I’m so glad I’ve learned about this conference! They will be livestreaming their keynote on Tue March 10th
Last year’s keynote was by Johanna Lucht, first deaf engineer at NASA to take an active role in control room during crewed fight test.
From 2017′s conference, presentation slides are available for a bunch of talks, including
Sidestepping Ableist Language By Ashley Bischoff
Beyond the Tick box: Getting Accessibility Buy In By Rebecca Nancarrow
A Multidisciplinary Approach to Universal Design By Stein Erik Stokjerra and Anders Skifte
Social Media and Accessibility By Gian Wild
Tumblr media
[Screenshot from the Youtube video of Johanna Lucht’s keynote]
I also was curious as to what is current research in this field and downloaded the latest Journal on Technology and Persons with Disabilities Scientific/Research Proceedings. One of the papers was Implementing ‘The Enclosing Dark’: A VR Auditory Adventure (p 153)
In The Enclosing Dark, your adventure takes place in complete darkness. Only through auditory cues and haptic feedback are you able to traverse the invisible landscape in which you wander. Will you avoid the unseen, but heard, creatures in the dark, or will you choose to fight them head on? The choice is yours as you make your way through The Enclosing Dark. Discussion By utilizing the built-in audio and haptic systems provided by current VR systems and building a user interface and targeted in-game training, we created a virtual environment (VE) free of visual components that is fully accessible to BVI [blind or visually impaired] gamers.
One of the game’s haptic features is so very cool
Our butterfly-fluttering pattern does not have specific auditory sounds that play in accompaniment as the soft fluttering produces no sound. Instead, if the player is very still in an area where the underground butterflies fly, a butterfly will come and land on one of their hands. To replicate this experience, we created a pattern that alternates between a very short, less than one-quarter of a second, vibration pattern that starts at -23 dB, rises quickly to -22 dB, then drops back to -23 dB followed by a -96 dB pause for one half second, which is followed by vibration that stays at -23 dB for an even shorter moment in time and then returns to -96 dB. This pattern repeats itself a total of three times before the complete vibration pattern ends.
You can hear a play-through of the game at the designer Aaron Gluck’s site
The Enclosing Dark is a VR Auditory Adventure. It started as a thought experiment what a game for someone who is unable to see would look like. The game contains no visual input, but instead relies on auditory and haptic feedback to navigate through the game. In addition to the game play, a menu system was created that also does not make use of any visuals, but instead works on both voice recognition and verbalized information through controller manipulation.
The object of The Enclosing Dark is to explore the darkness in which the player finds him/herself. Through this exploration the story of what is going on is uncovered. The player also is able to make many decisions throughout the game leading to new areas and finally to one of multiple endings.
Lastly, I just downloaded Accessibility requirements for ICT products and services by European Telecommunications Standards Institute 2019.

The Thing:Artbook - Who all is in this thing??
So, who all is involved with “The Thing:Artbook” you ask? Well, I am here to give you an answer. Listed below is the list of all the artists who have a piece that is included in the book. Some of them have more than one, some produced more than one, but we had to make hard decisions about inclusion.
When we started out on this project, an idea conceived last year in May, and once we had secured the approval from Universal Studios to move ahead, we had hoped to make it a book with primarily comic industry folks because that’s who we knew. Once we started to reach out to folks with information about the project the response was so positive, we decided to branch out a little and include some illustrator friends and designer folks. Again, the response was so overwhelmingly positive we decided to invite whoever we thought we could get on board. Then, people started coming to us as word of the project began to spread. We were blown away and humbled by the caliber of talent who have agreed to be a part of this book.
We hope you will be pleasantly surprised and excited as you go through the list below and see the participants listed. You will probably have heard about many of them already, but hopefully there will be some surprises as well.
The “The Thing: Artbook” will go live for pre-sales Tuesday March 7th at  7pm est at the link below.
The book is expected to ship the first week of July 2017.
