Luke and Mara’s relationship is SO FUNNY. Literally everyone else is like: “What are you doing? Why are you concerned? Luke, she threatens to kill you every time you speak with each other, please-“

I love the Luke was so concerned when he sensed that Mara’s ship lost power in the second book. Han describes it as Luke acting like Mara is his best friend rather than the woman who has repeatedly threatened him with murder. And after it’s all over, he does save her! He gets them to pick her up and they take her to Coruscant to heal and none of that would have happened without Luke’s influence.

Luke is so fond of Mara, despite having met her all of three months ago. All of their interactions involve murder threats and dangerous situations, literally none of them have been postive interactions, but Luke is so pleased to see her! Just! All the time!

Luke agrees to break Karrde off of Thrawn’s ship because Mara asks (no further requesting necessary). Luke breaks Mara out of her house arrest on Coruscant because he wants her to go to Wayland with them. Luke defends Mara constantly whenever Han (very reasonably) questions whether or not they should trust her. Han and Mara and Luke himself all ask “What if this ends in Luke’s death?” and Luke’s answer is always “¯\ _(ツ)_/¯ Guess I’ll die then.”

(Luke is basically like “If I die, I die. The Force wills it.” I think he and Qui-Gon were soulmates-)

I like that Luke finds out about Mara’s past in the first book but only ever brings it up in the third. And Han is like “She was the EMPEROR’S HAND, and you didn’t think that was worth mentioning???” and Luke just: “The past is in the past.”

Leia and Mara also have a fun relationship though. Leia speaks to Mara for the first time and Mara, right as Leia is leaving, is like “I’m going to kill your brother. Did he tell you that?” and Leia just: “No, he didn’t mention that. May I ask why?”

Leia consistently is like “Well. Luke trusts this person. I trust her too.” Which is almost exactly like Wedge “Luke vouched for them so I trust them with my life” Antilles.

“If Luke trusts them, I trust them.”

Leia is always like “I know you’ve said you want to kill my brother. But, from what he’s said, you had a lot of opportunities to kill him. And he’s still alive. Are you sure you want to kill him?”

And Mara is just like: “Shut up.”

Han is the only one who is like “I don’t think we should trust this person who wants to kill Luke” and Luke is always like “Why not?”

But really what gets me is the final scene SPOILERS when Luke gives Mara Anakin’s lightsaber. And I know Mara thinks it’s him not-so-subtly telling her that they can both move on from the past, but all I can see it as is Luke seeing Mara like he saw Anakin. He sees them both enslaved to the Emperor and brainwashed and hurting and he ultimately saves both of them. But, Anakin never got to use his lightsaber again, after he came back to the light. So, giving it to Mara, who was in a very similar situation as Vader was, is such a good way to honour Anakin’s memory and every time I think about it - two people manipulated by Palpatine who find their way back after years and years of abuse, both using the same lightsaber at opposite ends of their life - I kind of want to cry.

And maybe I’m looking too deeply into it, but I love this scene. I love Mara asking why Luke is giving it to her and Luke saying “I want you to have it.” I love Anakin’s lightsaber finally being used in the light again, I love it I love it I love it- I’m crying again

Okay so i have a folder on my phone where I put pics of boys I like (usually actors or rugby players lol) and somehow i have gathered 57 (FIFTY-SEVEN!) pics and gifs of Joe Keery and didn't realise I had that many.

The rules (that I totally made up years ago) say that if you have 10 or more pics you need to make a folder.

How did this happen without me realising?

I have nearly 1k pics of Dacre in a folder, btw, and nearly 500 gifs (and a separate folder for Billy/Harringrove fanart (over 400 to date). And I've been collecting pics of Nicholas Galitzine.

But the amount of Joe Keery just blindsided me.

That beekeeping post in infuriating because I have literally never once in my life encountered an actual vegan that genuinely believes any of that nonsense? There are MANY vegans on this platform that REGULARLY share information and sources and they are routinely ignored. That person was most likely a child or a troll tbh. And OF COURSE that's the one people spread around. Despite the fact that the quinoa thing was 1) never even about child slavery, and 2) the one big criticism for it was a single article that was swiftly and repeatedly debunked. There's nothing particularly evil about quinoa. There's nothing even particularly vegan about quinoa! And the agave comment is also ludicrous because you know what MOST agave is used for? Tequila! But no one ever cares until they can make vegans the problem. Because it feels good and validating to perpetuate that caricature of veganism. If you can say clearly the vegans are idiots who don't understand anything, you can help those posts spread misinformation and wash your hands of it and never think about it again.

OTW’s Legal Chair is Pro-AI and What That Means

traHoooooooo boy. Okay, so for those who don’t know, OTW shared in their little newsletter on May 6th an interview their legal chair did on AI.

Most people didn’t notice...Until a couple hours ago when I guess more high profile accounts caught wind and now every time I refresh the tweet that links the newsletter that’s another 10+ quote tweets.

The interview itself is short, was done in February, and...Has some gross stuff.

Essentially Betsy Rosenblatt agrees with Stability AI that its fair use, and believes that AI is “reading fanfic”.

To be EXTREMELY clear: Generative AI like ChatGPT is not sentient. No AI is sentient, and Generative AI are actually incredibly simple as far as AI goes. Generative AI cannot “read”, it cannot “comprehend” and it cannot “learn”.

In fact, all Generative AI can do is spit out an output created out of a dataset. Its output is reliant on there being variables for it to spit back out. Therefore, it cannot be separated from its dataset or its “training”.

Additionally, the techbros who make these things are profiting off them, are not actually transforming anything, and oh yeah, are stealing people’s private data in order to make these datasets.

All this to say: Betsy Rosenblatt does not actually understand AI, has presumably fallen for the marketing behind Generative AI, and is not fit to legally fight for fic writers.

So what does this mean? Well, don’t delete your accounts just yet. This is just one person, belonging to a nonprofit that supposedly listens to its users. There’s a huge backlash on social media right now because yeah, people are pissed. Which is good.

We should absolutely use social media to be clear about our stances. To tell @transformativeworks that we are not okay with tech bros profiting off our fanworks, and their legal team should be fighting back against those who have already scraped our fanworks rather than lauding a program for doing things its incapable of doing.

I have fanfic up on Ao3. I have fanfic I’m working on that I’d love to put there too. But I cannot if it turns out the one safe haven for ficwriters is A-Okay with random people stealing our work and profiting off of it.

this scares the shit out of me too, but chances are, this fear is whats hindering your ability to give your body what it needs - a refresher. a palette cleanser. go sew. go make music. go sculpt something. garden. read a book, fuck it WRITE a book. cook. help someone cook. give yourself a goal without worrying too much about how to achieve it. have fun doing it. make people smile - youll make yourself smile along the way and youll forget all about the fear.

creativity isnt limited to just talent. you can do whatever you want. you can learn whatever you want. that fear of forgetting your passion will go away if you occupy that space with something else just as enthusiastic.

you might not have the energy like i do anymore. you hate the cycle, and so do i. everyone goes through it - but the great thing about the cycle is the fact youll always loop around. and in your lowest, most gutwrenching times when u cant even pick up a needle or look for inspo without comparing yourself or saying why cant i do it like they can - you can. and you will. you just have to give yourself a chance. and that chance starts with a long nap, your favorite video essays or lets plays, and letting your mind and body rest for a little bit.
