Sun's gone Down

Ashton wakes to their vision obscured by sunflowers.

When he gets his eyes cleared, he sees they are all covered in sunflowers from head to toe. He sees the crater. He knows what happened.

He wants to fucking scream and rage and bring this whole fucking tunnel down around them because that was his littlest soulmate that blew themself up because they thought that's what they were made for. Because they still thought their life was worth less than everyone else's.

Instead they sink into the ground, let themself flow and rotate and slide through the rock until they're standing upright at the edge of that fucking crater littered with twisted scraps of sunflower-yellow metal. They hadn't noticed before, but gliding through the earth doesn't knock their soul blooms loose. It's a shitty ass fucking consolation prize.

Ashton's eyes roam the wreckage, searching for–

There it is. That stupid fucking Changebringer coin.

He yanks it out of the fucking wall it's wedged in, acting like some fucking stupid sign that they have to keep fucking moving. Like they don't fucking already know that. They can't, won't let FCG have died in vain.

They're also not leaving any piece of FCG behind.

Everyone pitches in to gather up what's left of their soulmate. It's not a proper body, not a whole body, but fuck it. Surely there's some sort of resurrection magic that can make this fucking work. FCG managed to bring Chet back from death during the fight, so even if resurrection magics still aren't working on Exandria, they know where the backdoor between home and the fucking moon is. They can drag someone through to do the spell, bring FCG back.

It's not over. Ashton won't let it be over. Not yet.

And I'm gonna stop there and let Taliesin really show us how fucked up Ashton is from loosing FCG and what they're going to do about it. But I will say I choose to believe Bells Hells will at least try to get someone to resurrect FCG. And the most likely candidate to get it done is the Reincarnate spell because it's way, way cheaper than True Resurrection (1,000 gp of rare oils and unguents and a piece of the body vs 25,000 gp of diamonds and a sprinkling of holy water), and thus more likely that allies or Bells Hells can/will bank roll/supply it, and Reincarnate is the only other res spell that doesn't require a full-ish body to work. Now Resurrection "closes all mortal wounds and restores any missing body parts" (and costs 1,000 gp of diamonds). But it isn't clear on how many missing body parts it will restore. Though given FCG is practically scrap metal, I'm gonna guess it's probably more than Resurrection will cover. So again, resurrection options for FCG are True Resurrection and Reincarnate. And Fearne can cast Reincarnate (5th Level spell, babee) as long as they get the components. Whether Sam will allow it to work is another question entirely, but a true blue Pinocchio Arc for FCG could be cool and fun and might convince him to let it happen. We, unfortunately, have to wait and find out.

I do very much believe that it's been a good thing that we decided for Encyclopedia Exandria not to have fanart. It's nice to have illustrated articles, but doing so with fanart creates its own challenges and issues (even ones aside from nuances of permissions).

Choosing to include fanart on the wiki creates a sort of subtle popularity contest, especially when one approaches artists to ask for permission based on what one just sees around. It creates this vector where the art that is included is largely based on what platforms the editors use and what artists are popular on that platform or known within those editor's circles.

Visual reinterpretation of the character (or other subject) is a lovely thing, but I often question if that has a place on a wiki, in other words in a collection of official information about and official interpretations of that character. At best, yes, including fanart showcases the breadth of representations of this character throughout the fandom; at worst, it magnifies a specific vision of the character that is only passingly related to the character as they are or it gives a wrong impression of how they are depicted in the work itself. (I think of how Asha Greyjoy was often depicted in fanart as a sexy dolled up pirate babe, thus illustrated on the wiki for a while.)

I also often find that when a wiki allows fanwork to be uploaded and placed into articles, there's eventually a phenomenon where some editors spend more time curating an art gallery than they do maintaining the articles themselves or some treat the content of the articles as just a wall on which to hang the art. On occasion, an artist will join the wiki out of sole interest in it as a platform for their art; it's fine for an artist to want to be seen, but it isn't appropriate to treat a wiki as a venue for that. There's always a risk here of pulling focus away from the wiki's actual goal.

Illustrating a wiki with fanart also muddies the line between what's official and what's fannish, and I always feel nervous about not making that delineation clear. A wiki's goal is to collect information about the subject as it is in the official or related (non-fan) works. Is using fanart to illustrate articles in the spirit of that?

I’m really enjoying what Christian is doing with F.R.I.D.A and their attitude toward the gods, like babe your deeply subconscious Aeorian bias is showing (do they even know that about Aeor?).

The way that they have chosen to rationalize it, too - ‘oh don’t you think the gods must be so sleepy, really it’s our fault if you think about it, it’s actually a kindness if we…kill them all I guess?’ - gives me the same paternalistic hubris vibes as Zerxus’ approach to Asmodeus, as though the GODS lack any agency over a situation they have just found themselves in.

Regardless of what the gods are - truly divine in some way, manifestations of the faith of their followers, a species of superbeings from beyond the stars who got Kal-El yellow sun powers from Exandria and then picked up Traveler-style cults, something else or some combination - it’s fascinating.

Perhaps one of the most mysterious characters, even to herself, Camellia is the sorcerer of this party, receiving powers from the Shadowfell for reasons unknown. She is not to be feared though, only when she's angry and her wings of the Fallen are shown. Calm in her own nature, Camellia tries to make a peaceful conversation between the Dark Powers and the Light, trying to prove that there is, yes, a common ground between two realms.

With a past full of regrets, she found herself in Rumblecusp where she found some solace in the arms of Mar, as we know today as Tonitrua Pasternikas, her ex-wife. Those were good times, with sweet oblivion to not remember of past mistakes.

Luckily enough, that solace would follow her in the form of the Chaos Clover, who embraced her true self without fear and accepted what is and what will become of her. Slowly coming to the process of trust and finding herself, having good friends as family is the best wish someone could ask for.

Fun facts about her: Camellia has grown around several music instruments and now has learned to master the Ehru, a Marquisian art her mothers taught her before. She's the flower girl, always with flowers on her hair and flowers to give others. Also, in mechanics, Camellia has the Stress Points due to PTSD, adding to the cool mechanics on this campaign. AU where Percy de rolo never makes his pepperbox. He simply made a pocket watch. At first, that's truly all it was. He made it as a promise to his family and himself that he will never lose as much time as they did. He swore it. Come to find Orthax in his dreams, promising he could gain back his families time through vengence.

So Orthax possessed the Pocket Watch, that Percy has come to endearing call "The Keep" seeing that it it was a physical reminder of his keeper of time. Percy came to find that it did so much make than just keep his time, it altered and adjusted it, it changed his time, it placed him in periods of time in the future and in history.

Percy saw numerous lives of his play out thousands of times. He saw one where he builds his pepperbox, he finds one where he was arranged to marry a lovely elven woman of Syngorn before anything terrible had happened, he was shown one in which he loved that half-elven woman's brother instead, he witnessed so many Percivals live through nightmares and dreams, yet he was still without his happy ending.

Of course, no matter what timeline he was on, fate would always exist. Percy would come to meet Vox Machina after he got thrown into a jail in some pre-calamity era. They all came numerous different points in history. The twins, who Percy came to know well from his views of other Percivals, arrived from a more modern version of Exandria, carrying advanced small mobile devices he learned where "smart phones". Pike and Grog admitted they didn't know what time they were from rather that they knew they were pirates and knew they belonged in any time with an ocean and stars to guide them. Scanlan said he was from an apocalyptic future, he only went on to explain he spent his time there playing songs and telling stories to bring a light to a somewhat dreary world. Finally, Keyleth, told them she was from far before any of them, the concept of Calendars and dates weren't particularly relevant to her and her culture.

The group shared they were merely going along with whatever their lives threw at them when a cracked golden stop watch was thrown at their feet. Each of them had one. It was exactly like Percy's— except each had a slightly unique crack to its glass. (Vex's and Vax's had entirely missed a half of the glass, each piece matching the other's). Percy's was completely intact.

They also shared how the moment they twisted the notch on the side they shifted to a new time. First it was Vex and Vax who arrived in Keyleth's time. Then those three to another— supposedly unamed person's— time line, and then another where they met Scanlan. Those four plus the notably unnamed person, then moved to Grog and Pike's Scanlan. (Percy put together this is when the unamed person— who Keyleth slipped up and said was actually named Tiberius— had died while they were out at sea.) Then they all appeared here— well not before they found themselves bouncing from time to time saving people from the occasional apocalypse or evil dictator by killing him as a mere babe.

Percy found the group curious but was reluctant to tell them any of his story, much more so with his own name. Vex, who's voice had comforted him in many versions of their world, had taken the oppurtunity to simply call him "Dear", "Darling", or "Dearest". Percy had of course seen the other five in his selves' memories, and of course they mean everything to the lonely boy who only witnessed lifetimes through another's eyes, but of course he cared the most for the Half-Elven woman with her endearments before him. So he accompanied the group.

They stuck with him even once they learned his name, his past, his construction of The Keep, and while he told them of his hopes to go back in time and change the death of his family before it happened. They all decided they'd help him even though he tried to dissuade them from doing so.

So they kill the briarwoods, the orb under the ziggurat never appearing, percy de rolo never went grey at seventeen. Yet— Yet he was still here, grey hair and all, because he had severed himself from his own timeline, and so had his friends.

Orthax was amused with his thinking that he simply had to take vengence on the briarwoods— in one timeline. That one they fought wasn't even his true one. Vox Machina, excluding Percy, the ones with broken watches that weren't cursed with the presence of Orthax fought, and won against the smokey demon. In truth, it was Vex, who crushed the glass under her thumb who truly saved him.

There, on Percy de Rolo's watch was five cracks. Five cracks that exactly matched the ones his friends had (One cracks for both the twins seeing as their watches were merely matching halves of glasses).

"I... must have— some other version of me must have sent for you. He must have known I wouldn't make it. There could have been— several of me who sent their watches to each you. Pelor— I must be a complete failure if I had lost myself so many times." To which Vox Machina crowded around him and held him close and instead thanked him for bringing them together and trying again and again no matter what to win and succeed.

Vex held his face in her hands and said "Darling, I do not think you failed any of those times. I think... I think you just pushed your plan for success along its way. You're too smart to accept failure." n she kisses him on the cheek and Voc Machina agreed with her, patting Percy on the back, kissing his forehead, punching his arm playfully, or even playing him a song of a hero. he was that hero.

Yeah I dunno "I was going to be a clock-maker" still hits hard.

I really wanted that bunny to be Morrighan from EXU Kymal, but listening to the description of her appearance, I'm wondering if Verna isn't related to Morrighan in some way. She doesn't remember anything but the name of the being who shoved her to Exandria, after all.

Of course, I can't come up with a reason Bunny Babe would have left the Crown Keepers and ended up with Joe, but connecting plot threads isn't my job. Stranger things have happened. (The fact that this would give Dorian an excuse to come back hadn't slipped my mind, either.)

Some totally relatable GM Moments

Part 1 of idk how many I’ll be sharing.

“Totally watching porn”

This one is (tangentially) related to Matthew Mercer talking about Marisha Ray walking into his home office while he was planning game stuff during the Exandria GM Roundtable.

My SO and I live together. Much like Matt with Marisha, I live with my SO and he is one of my players. Unlike Matt, I don’t use the “You saw nothing!” line. Instead, I make up a “totally believable” explanation for the minimizing.

Once, I minimized all my windows when SO walked into my office while I was working on worldbuilding and campaign planning. He asked what I was up to. “Uh, nothing! Just...watching porn!”

SO: “So you wanna take a break from watching and head to the bedroom?”

Me: [still trying to cover up what I was working on] “Uh, sure.”

“Spoilers”

Almost all of the people I geek out about ttrpgs with play at one of my tables. I routinely have to censor myself talking to them because I want to tell them about the things I have planned but I can’t spoil the plot for them.

So, I keep lists of who I can tell what to. “Player A: plays in Game1, Game3. Can discuss Game2. Player B: plays in Game 2. Can discuss Game1 and Game 3.

“Staring into the distance”

Much like the Exandria GMs, I also get struck by inspiration for game stuff at random times, especially when there’s worldbuilding involved. My SO once caught me staring a a pot of boiling pasta.

“Babe. Are you okay?”

“Huh? Wha--? OH SHIT.” I proceed to test the pasta for doneness. Turns out, I’d been staring into the boiling pot long enough that the ravioli finished cooking. I was considering the impact of the deities on my world and why I have to kind of rework some stuff for Mark 3 of this world.
