I have been rereading my way through this amazing fic, as the author just dropped out of a long writing hiatus to try and finish it with the...unfortunate amount of spare time some of us have on our hands right now. It is absolutely a favourite of mine--the writer has the most amazing grasp of the characters, and their knowledge and love for kitchen work is so evident. It does have a lot more smut than i normally toss out in a fic rec--there is is sex and it is...uh...detailed. There’s also some problematic consent, which the author mentions up front. And a lot of alcohol.

And food. Oh god, is there food. I am having deeply erotic thoughts about food.

Anyway. yeah. this is brilliant and makes me miss kitchen work so hard, in all it’s glory and horror.

Javert Fic Rec List

I started composing a Javert fic rec list like a couple months ago and I only just realized I never posted it. So here it is. It was originally intended to be a general Les Mis fic rec list but as I looked through fics I realized I only really gave a shit about Javert.

Valvert fics:

The Subject of a Heart--Javert sold his heart to a devil years ago. Now the time has come to pay his debt.

Catharsis--Javert and Valjean go all out, beat each other up, rant about their feelings and have extremely dub-con (verging on non-con) sex.

Patchwork Justice--Superhero AU, Javert the cop does not believe in vigilante justice.

Inspector Javert and the Eighth Wonder of the World--Basically, Javert takes on King Kong.

Genesis 6:11--Modern AU, Javert goes to talk to an imprisoned Valjean and gets caught in a riot.

Hell is What You Make--Dark fic, non-con. Dark!Valjean kidnaps Javert as revenge for Toulon.

A Fine Thing for a Cold Night--Javert reports to Madeleine while injured. He gets found out.

The Things We Do At Midnight--Idk how to summarize this one except it’s literary and angsty dubcon Madeleine-era fic.

La Loterie de Saint-Valentin--In Toulon, guards claimed prisoners on Valentine’s Day as their own. Montreuil-sur-Mer has a similar, if less...awful...practice.

Let’s Go Break the Law One More Time--Modern AU where Valjean is an odd mix of vigilante and art thief and Javert doesn’t even like art but is devoted to catching him.

Javert/Chabouillet:

The Protege--In Paris, Chabouillet takes Javert on as his underling.

where the bartering chips fall--Incomplete, but basically Javert and the Paris police take on a kidnapping ring.

The Last Temptation--When Chabouillet finds out Javert attempted suicide, he decides to save Javert through the power of BDSM.

Andre’s Burden--Chabouillet takes Javert on as his protege, but political corruption causes them troubles.

Javert Gen:

Between the Dog and the Wolf--Post-canon Javert is alive and working undercover. He and Valjean are thrust together by chance. (Might be Valvert endgame, I don’t think I ever finished it because it’s 90k.)

The Interview--Related to Between the Dog and the Wolf. Javert wants a job with France’s secret service. First he has to interview with Vidocq.

Career choices--A conversation between Javert and Montparnasse.

M-sur-M police station revisited--Javert & Fantine gen, Javert is a bit of a better, or at least kinder, police officer.

Gadjo--Javert encounters some Roma and remembers his past.

Fate Intervenes--A surviving Javert runs into Marius.

The Javert--Literally a Lorax AU.

It’s a Wonderful Life, Javert--What would happen if Javert never lived? On a lonely bridge in Paris, he is about to find out.

Montreuil Prison Study--Valjean and Javert set out to test whether a prison can truly maintain humane conditions.

Worms--An old enemy buries Javert alive. Technically a little Valvert, but not much.

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG, you guys.  :D  :D  :D  THANK YOU.  I’m glad you liked it!  And @pilferingapples and @midautumnnightdream, to answer your questions, I have vague ideas of making all of these stories interconnected into a larger AU, and yes it’s intended to be canon era-ish.  As for whether it’s a magical AU or not, I think the answer to that is also “ish”?  ;D  It will probably get more magical as I go, but I’m aiming for the same kind of magical realism that Alice Hoffman and Moira Fowley-Doyle manage so well in their works.  So, I guess we’ll see.  ^_^  But, thank you again, everyone!  It’s nice to know I haven’t entirely lost my writing ability over the last several months of inactivity.  ^_~

OH.  And pilf, YES, that is exactly what I was going for with Cosette and Fantine.  That kind of “is it?/isn’t it?” kind of vibe.  Where there might legitimately be something odd going on in the woods... or it could just be Cosette’s child-logic trying to help her through her mother having left her behind.  I left it ambiguous on purpose.  ^_^  I’m planning to delve a bit more into that in later ficlets.  At least that’s the plan as of now.  ;D

A, E, and F?

A. If you could rec a piece of music to accompany one of your fics, what would you pick? Why?

One less obvious one I listened to for Sailing By Orion’s Star was called “Wooden Toy Sword” by Heather Alexander which is just perfect.

If we’re talking instrumentals, the best ones would be “A Nation of Thieves” from the Black Sails soundtrack and “Davy Jones” from Pirates of the Caribbean. And also “What Shall We Die For” from Pirates. All have The Right Feeling about them. 

E.  Who’s your favorite main character you’ve written?

I really loved getting to write Fantine in SBOS because I’ve not written her until I did that AU and it was lovely to get her down on the page! I would like to write some more of her. 

I also wrote my first one-shot focusing on Bossuet and Enjolras’ friendship for Ace Amis Week in “Shining Bright” which was really nice because I hadn’t written much of them before. 

As far as OCs go, it’s a tie between Astra and Michel. 

F. What stories are you planning for the future?

I have some fic ideas planned! One is a Javert-centric fic based on a Christmas Carol, although if I don’t finish it before Christmas it may be less Christmas focused, but it’s the idea that he doesn’t jump off the bridge (Cosette stumbles across and stops him) so he stays stuck in his weird mental place and is visited by three ghosts (Enjolras, Valjean, Fantine). Featuring the idea of him having an underling in the police force who looks up to him and Javert does not even notice. 

I also have a two-shot fic planned where Enjolras runs into Javert during his reconnaissance, realizing Valjean didn’t in fact kill him. Again, a sort of bittersweet one, someone stop me. 

I also have another more vague idea where Enjolras and Prouvaire get arrested at the barricade and something happens to where the rest don’t die, Enjolras and Prouvaire get away from their guards and spot Not Dead Yet Javert in the river and save him and then bring him to Bahorel’s apartment where the other Amis are hiding and Bahorel is like “..did you bring this cop to my door what the heck guys” Somehow this ends up with Valjean and Cosette involved as well, but I’m not sure on details yet. 

I also have some more Pirate AU one-shots I’d like to do, to go in the deleted scenes series. Some of them possibly after the end of the fic. 

One the filing the numbers off SBOS front and turning it into an original piece, once I’m done revising the three existing books I have some notions toward potentially moving beyond three and turning it into a series. Kind of an alternate history kind of idea, we’ll see if I can come up with stuff!

Sailing by Orion’s Star is a fantastic pirates!AU fic that is literally responsible for me being back in the fandom (and, indirectly, like 8 other people now). It’s quite historically accurate, epic in scope, gives good weight to the M-sur-M trio’s narratives ( Fantine gets to be badass !! and also raise Cosette !! ), and overall it’s just an amazing fic.

It’s unfinished, but the sheer joy of Bahorel being there to do what we all want to do (punching Tholomyes and treating Fantine how she deserves) is just amazing. It’s sprinkled throughout with historical and geographical details that show off Amarguerite’s penchant for research. It’s just a joy to read!

Also, it’s a shining example of the True OTP of the Les Mis fandom, Tholomyes/Getting Punched

A Shower of Sparks @minstr3lsong: A CANON ERA MAGIC AU SERIES which is seriously fantastic. It’s emotionally thoughtful and the way the world-building fits into canon era SO WELL. 

Hang Up Your Brightest Colours by ColonelDespard: A wonderful one-shot between Courfeyrac and Grantaire, discussing Enjolras and whether or not the Amis will grow old. Seriously, a beautiful work, I cried. 

A Regrettable Encounter by @oilan: A delightful fic full of antics with Bahorel, Prouvaire, and Combeferre as they have a pretty Romantic adventure. 

Nearly Historic by @amarguerite: “Something would have to go very, very wrong for Courfeyrac to be in line for the family title-- and it does. Courfeyrac wisely uses his newfound privilege to punch Lafayette in the face. “ The summary speaks for itself but I almost cried laughing, this is so perfect. 

en l'année 1830 by @smithensy: A great series focused on the 1830 barricades. My favorite piece is “a pale imitation of the soul” which focuses on Enjolras and Combeferre after Enjolras is injured and it is GORGEOUS go read it.

The Case of the Missing Romantic & Solidarity in Solitude by @fixaidea​: Two wonderful companion hurt/comfort pieces focusing on Enjolras and Prouvaire.

Alliance and Progress by @oilan​: A wonderful canon era piece focusing on Enjolras and Courfeyrac.

A Reflection of Starlight by AutumnGracy: This isn’t the corner of fandom I am most often in but YA’LL this fic is INCREDIBLE. Long, well-plotted, and with some of the best characterizations of Valjean and Javert I’ve seen. A Post-Seine fic where Valjean saves Javert’s life. WIP, and a slow-burn fic. 

The Last Wasted Generation by @feuillyova​: A WIP WWII and Cold War AU with seriously incredible research!

Sub Rosa by @robertawickham:  “In 1830, Cosette buys a fan, and has a short conversation about mothers and motherlands. In 1833, she tries to buy another.” Everything robertawickham writes is wonderful, but this is one of my absolute favorites.  Her Less Miserable AU verse is also great! Featuring Fantine and Bahorel and what-ifs. Fraternite is also one of the best “how the Amis all meet” fics of all time.

Students of the Rebellion by @treblemirinlens: Star Wars AU series featuring the whole Les Mis gang.

Some Friendlier Sky by @amarguerite:  “Courfeyrac falls through the roof of no. 7 Rue de l'Homme Armé, taking down not only the ceiling, but the carefully built walls Valjean has constructed around himself and Cosette. Wacky hijinks ensue.” One of the BEST fics. All of amarguerite’s fics are incredible and witty, read them all, but this is one of my faves.

Peace of the Wild Things by @ariadneslostthread​: Power Trio modern AU sick-fic, a classic favorite by one of my favorite people.
