You know what fantasy stories don't use enough? Different measuring scales, and confusion caused by them. Because before the metric system, practically every place and culture had their own measures for weights, lengths and distances. It would be fun to add that into a story for added realistic cultural confusion.
The average dwarf is four or five feet tall, but not in human measures. Yeah they're still shorter than humans but the dwarf foot (and the namesake measure of length) is bigger in proportion to their body. "Is that in dwarf feet or human feet?" is a common question to hear on construction sites, wherever human carpenters and dwarf masons are working together.
A dedicated local Common Misconception Historian has a pet peeve about the whole "princess Featherblade was only 12 years old when she led the attack on Marshland Halls" -myth, because the historical recordings on the human side are off. While she was remarkably young, that myth came about back in the day when humans were still trying to apply "dog years" to elves, and in an elven life span, 120 years is not a direct equivalent to a 12-year-old human.
A whole culture whose smallest unit of weight loosely translates to "about as much as an apple", and varies from region to region depending on the size of local apples. These people are famed for their alchemists, whose uncanny ability to simply measure their ingredients by heart, making their recipes essentially impossible to replicate. This famed skill is a matter of survivor bias - the ones that don't have that knack ten to explode into fine mist.

hi I'm adopting my au hard rules RN
this new mlp infection au has me in a grimdark chokehold. so much so that I slept with the lights on last night!!! I've been sifting through so much content. My favs have been from Chloe Alonzo (etc.etcetera) and Ariel (grimskelegirl).
With that being said I've decided to set myself some hard rules for my personal headcanon!! I want to work on some self-insert art with my oc FeatherBlade, so here are some of my thoughts on the universe:
Tumblr media
How it started: Swamp Fever (canon to the show). A small population of Hayseed Willow trees (unnamed within the show) has made root in the everfree forest near the bog. Flash bee habitats are dying and the Everfree population has been MIA. Unfortunately, as one of the few pollinators immune to swamp fever, the Hayseed Willow trees have been on the fritz. Have you ever noticed how the bog always seems a little different every time you visit? The tree's aren't just changing every time you wander near them, no, they're entirely new trees from the last time you were there. Previously overlooked due to the originating population being from Hayseed Swamps, it's been observed that Hayseed Willows have a much faster lifecycle than typical trees. Due to the lack of abundant pollination, the Hayseed Willows have been producing more pungent spores in the face of dwindling repopulation within the Everfree. "Deemed unsafe due to the threat of swamp fever, the Hayseed Willows lack studied materials. Desperate times have given us reason to look into them further. Any information is useful information. Ponies are dying, we need to find answers. These new conditions have had... detrimental effects on the larger mammal and mammal adjacent populations surrounding the area (ie ponies, bears, gryphons, manticores, etc). A spore based infection hasn't been observed in cold blooded creatures (ei dragons, kelpies, serpents, various reptilian and aquatic species). Pure avian species getting infected hasn't been observed either, their resting body temperatures tend to be higher than mammals. Could infection rates be linked to host body temperature? Does the spore infection have to grow and evolve to combat the host's immune system fever response? Conclusion unknown." The rest of notes here are scattered. Everything seems to be written with extreme haste. Regarding the mane6: Twilight: Healthy. Stuck in Canterlot hospital both due to quarantine and studying. No progress, pulling samples from infected and any known immune ponies she can find. Twi has suggested case-controlled studies in allegedly unaffected species. This idea has been highly protested, though the ponies in protest no longer seem to be... There's been various creatures being moved to and from the hospital lower levels in completely blacked out boxes. Much of staff has no idea what she's doing down there anymore. Rarity: Healthy? Currently at sweet apple acres with the apple family. The boutique was quickly breached by infected ponies. Fashionable doesn't always mean functional, and the same applied to the boutique's exterior. Rarity was hurt in a scuffle trying to rescue opal, though infection not likely. She and opal are safe. Sweetie bell is currently at their parent's home in Canterlot. Rarity hasn't been able to contact her as the phone lines are down. She's worried about her safety, but has been told the Canterlot quarantine procedures have been successful. Pinkie Pie: Healthy, too op to get infected. She made it to the Pie family rock farm. Everyone is currently safe. Ghastly Gorge has been a great natural barrier between them and Everfree forest. No infected have been sighted yet, they've all been freely roaming the farm property without worry, but it's getting too quiet outside.. Apple Jack: Healthy. Locked down at the apple family farm. Rarity, Big Mac and Apple Bloom have all been healthy and safe indoors. Granny on the other hoof is losing it. After what looked like a small surface bite with no skin breakage, they thought she would be ok. But she has since gone mute and wanders aimlessly around the house. She hasn't been seen eating or drinking anything but shows no sign of fever or infection progression. Big Mac made the decision to lock her in the barn after an incident that put the family at-risk. Apple Jack has been observing her whenever the coast is clear outside.
Rainbow Dash: Infected? Dash has been trying to convince Canterlot guards to let her in to see Twilight. Due to visible bite wound, they haven't let her in. Dash has grown neurotic under stress and hasn't given up trying to break in. She doesn't appear to be worsening but her agitation has been subject of debate on her progression. There's been talk of escorting her to the hospital but no official action has been made. Guards are growing tired of keeping her out on top of keeping the rest of the infected at bay. How long until they tell Twilight she's here? She's hurting herself trying to break in.. Fluttershy: Healthy. Under strict protection of Discord at his home. The level of chaos down in ponyville has struck fear into his softened heart and he refuses to let Fluttershy get hurt. Discord know's a thing or two about chaos but not even he could conjure up such an outbreak. It's unnatural, but caused by nature? That's exactly what's scaring him. She's been trying to convince him to let her help. Her communication with the wildlife may be what Twilight could utilize to advance in her studies. Not to mention how worried she is about the animals at the cottage. The two of them might be exactly what Equestria needs right now.. next post: royalty at canterlot + what's going on at the crystal empire, timeline on how far things have spread.

head empty just villain keigo kidnapping dabi’s/shouto’s girlfriend just to be a menace in their lives and once he notices your confidence in your boyfriends he just threateningly cuts off your waist length hair until your neck using his featherblade by pinning you against the wall, and notices you fold. the weird part of it all was, keigo liked you a lot better when you were fiesty rather than now, scared of him. he doesn’t understand it in the first place why he’s feeling bad seeing tears in your eyes, why he feels so weirded out when his sharp senses indulge him about your frantic heartbeat.
villain keigo who decides to be a little nicer and not harm you physically anyways because he considers it outside his ethics. he has beef with shouto/dabi and you’re just here for leverage. you did nothing wrong to him & so, intimidating you by cutting your hair up was the only thing he planned — somehow regretting it working so well.
decides to be a little more nicer to you and getting in a hairstylist, who sets your hair up while you choke on sobs. villain keigo who does not understand why your sobs are being so heinous towards his heart. why your delicate sniffles cut up his heart and cups your face, mumbling, “you’re being so brave aren’t you? in a different place, alone with a fucked up guy?”
keigo who doesn’t want to let you go at this point after months and doesn’t even care about his beef with shouto/dabi anymore.

I wonder if people realize that the reason why the League was allowed to exist for as long as it did without violent suppression from the HPSC is only because of the threat of the noumu
So. We know from Nagant's backstory that anything capable of shaking up the status quo was quickly and covertly executed without much fanfare:
Tumblr media
In fact, the Commission was so indiscriminate in applying that rule that both villains and heroes are said to have died under her rifle.
The reason why not even heroes were exempt from this ruthless retribution is simple. The Commission, as an institution born to regulate the spreading phenomenon of vigilantism and the chaos that follows, wasn't created with the purpose of administering justice, but rather to do just that: regulating society. They're not cops. They're an odd mix between politicians and spin doctors. On one hand, their official role is that of overseeing heroics as a whole—issuing hero licenses, coordinating pro heroes, analyzing and administering the data that goes into the hero rankings, that sort of thing. But on the other hand, their less official and more prominent role is that of puppet masters of the hero narrative. They feed a favourable (for the heroes, that is) interpretation of events to the media, and have done so for years, in order to protect the citizens' faith in the status quo.
Tumblr media
This is why, for example, the truth of who Nagant actually killed to get thrown into jail isn't public knowledge. Letting the citizens know that she'd offed the Commission President would raise question. People would wonder why a fairly beloved heroine would turn against the institution that trained her. They'd want to know the motive behind the murder of such a prominent figure in the industry. In other words, revealing any specifics would not only expose their internal disputes to the public eye, but also, and most importantly, instill doubt.
That's what it always boils down to. The Commission exists for one purpose: protecting the hero system from anything that might make it crumble—be it doubt, social unrest, and last but not least the worst case scenarios themselves, mistrust for heroes and the reign of terror of villains.
The current arc gives us a bit more insight into that. What happens when the citizens stop trusting heroes as protectors? And what happens when villains shake up the population so much that hope and faith in things ever getting better starts to sound like a child's tale? Lawlessness is what happens. A second coming of the vigilantism era, where untrained and unregulated civilians take matters into their own hands to feel less vulnerable, to retain some control in the face of such uncertainty.
So we come full circle: all of this is why the Commission acted around the law so much, and sent Nagant against anyone who so much as thought of endangering the status quo, corrupted heroes included:
Tumblr media
Prehemptive killing for the greater good was not above them, either. Nagant says it best: it's a system with two sides to it. The "good" side, the glorious one that gets the spotlight, made of heroes as saviors and cool fighters who protect people from the bad guys... And then the dark side, the ugly truth that for such neat labels to exist, anything blurring the lines or threatening that artificial peace had to be violently shot in the head for appearances sake. So much so, that even "starting to talk about it" is considered a life sentence.
Enter the League.
This is where things get interesting, because the Lov seems to challenge everything I just went over, at least on the surface.
If it's true that even voicing discontent about the current state of things warrants a quick and covert execution... how come Shigaraki&co could merrily call themselves The League of Villains and put out a whole Manifesto of Everything Wrong with the Hero System without getting their throats cut by a featherblade two days later?
At face value, it might seem like such suppression methods are a thing of the past. They were true once, but now things aren't as dire as they used to be.
Except... This isn't true. It's become a lot subtler than a gun-themed heroine shooting people in the head, true, but... *gestures at Hawks and Twice's subplot* this is still very much a thing. Twice was killed for the threat his quirk at full power posed to hero society.
Tumblr media
He wasn't arrested and thrown into Tartarus. He was murdered on the spot for the crime of possessing a dangerous quirk. Not even using it. Possessing it. It couldn't get more obvious if it tried: it's a blantant parallel to Nagant executing that guy above. Again, not for the crime of acting on his subversive ploys. But for discussing them.
Let me clarify that I'm not digging this back up to spark another debate on Ethics and Choices. This fandom has seen enough essays on that already. I'm bringing up the example of Twice specifically because Twice was killed by Hawks, a Commission operative, on Commission's orders. This is significant because it's meant to say more about the institution that regulates heroics more than it does about the victim of their brainwashing.
It's an established unspoken rule that heroes don't kill. The story goes above and beyond to state this. No matter how vile villains are, under normal circumstances they're always captured alive. Take for example All For One. He's arguably much more dangerous than Twice. While it's true that Twice's quirk could potentially overthrow an army and thus throw the nation into chaos, the more doubles he makes, the frailer they become. His strength lies purely in numbers, but a single skilled pro hero was enough to overpower him and render him harmless. AFO, on the other hand, has his finger in every pie and doesn't just rely on a quirk (or five or a dozen) to be dangerous. He has a network of loyal henchmen, he has enough charisma to draw followers to him, and his power extends beyond Japan. It reaches all the way across the ocean and into America. He's feared on a woldwide scale. Yet, he wasn't assassinated on the spot. He was thrown into Tartarus, despite how clear it's now become that keeping him alive was a huge faux pas for the heroes. So why did they?
The reason is simple. It was All Might who brought him in, and not the Commission. We know that they too had their eyes on him,
Tumblr media
and it's not hard to guess what Nagant was asked to do if she were to find him. But All Might is no hired gun, and he doesn't answer directly to the HPSC. Thus, AFO got to live, unlike anyone else the Commission deems "a threat."
Now, while Hawks has less of a double life than Nagant, he's still expected to carry out orders for what the Commission decides is the greater good. Just like his predecessor. Since he was taken in as her replacement, the truth of the matter is that he inherited her role as the Hand of the Commission. He handles their dirty laundry, oftentimes against his will,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
because it is "necessary" to bring peace.
The only real difference between them is that unlike Nagant, his talents lie more in the reconnaissance and intel gathering fields, so we don't see him act as a hired assassin more than that single time. Yet, I want to underline that the spying he does is still on Commission's orders, and as such, it is instrumental to the Commission's agenda as much as Nagant's assassinations. Besides, the fact that Hawks struck to kill despite his private desire to save Twice further emphasizes that the HPSC hasn't changed overnight simply because their President changed. When an individual becomes too dangerous, too much of a threat to what they've built, the killing order can still be issued—and it has been.
But over time, their need for manifacturing an illusion of peace lessened. I'm not sure how Kaina's and Toshinori's timelines intersect since we aren't given clear ages for either... But... with All Might's rise to the top, organized crime took a beating and dropped at historic lows. As such, I assume there were less and less potential threats to the status quo, and society thrived in actual peace without a need for the Commission to kill people in the shadows.
In fact, organized crime is so outdated that when Shigaraki comes around and starts recruiting allies, what he gathers is a bunch of uncoordinated small fries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As usual Viz phrases things with zero sympathy for the villains and waters it down to "kicked around" but both the og Japanese and the official Italian translation here say "oppressed". These 72 people followed Shigaraki because they felt the allure of lashing out at hero society. It was a suicide expedition, attacking a school packed with pros, but they still did it. All of them except Shigaraki and Kurogiri were apprehended, with most of them swiftly defeated by a bunch of high school freshmen. We could go as far as calling this first attempt at a villain group disorganized crime.
So between Nagant's and All Might's combined efforts, people who are dissatisfied with hero society have all but stopped gathering together to express those complaints, or to plan an effective way to change things. Either by choice or by force.
This of course doesn't mean society naturally evolved into something everyone's satisfied with. We know from many characters' backstories that despite the front as an utopia, hero society is not devoid of flaws. Inequality and discrimination run rampant, and with them, an anti-establishment sentiment from all those people oppressed or overlooked by it. But by the current point in the story, when the League is officially created, the Commission successfully achieved their goal: making those sociopolitical fringes of the population so small and quiet—as opposed to the all-encompassing faith in heroism—that they've basically become irrelevant. A minority that still exists, but that can be silenced easily with the iron fist of the law if need be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then the League went and ruined that. They not only succeeded at spreading fear amongst the population, but they've also exposed all the cracks in the system, rendering it vulnerable. Where fear festers, doubt seeps in. And we've seen what happened when the League was left to grow stronger and stronger. They've eventually gotten strong enough to level cities alone, and they've put enough of a dent in that faith that civilians don't trust heroes by default anymore.
So why are they still breathing? Why did the Commission take the risk of letting them be, allowing them to gather more and more allies and cement themselves as the rulers of the underworld until they became strong enough to potentially destroy the hero system itself?
Tumblr media
The noumu. I'm telling you, it's because of the noumu.
No, but seriously. It's really because, at least at first, the League was a relatively small fry, compared to the threat of bioengineered superhumans. Shigaraki didn't leave enough of an impression on the police working on the case to suggest they believed he would make it far. They labeled him an unstable manchild, someone more fearsome on accounts of his ability to just throw noumu at problems than because he was fearsome himself. The only serious threat the League posed at USJ was thanks to that single noumu. Then there's Hosu, and Shigaraki only appears to unleash several weaker, white ones to wreack havoc.
By then, the Commission starts taking an interest in the Lov. We are told that Hawks was supposed to take part in the Kamino raid,
Tumblr media
but didn't because he couldn't make it on time.
Tumblr media
But interestingly, they also hint that this entire operation was rushed. Storming the place before they could get more intel on the League and on the noumu wasn't the plan. But a student was kidnapped under the pros' noses, and the school was in hot waters with the media for it.
Now, let's consider for a moment UA's status. As one of the most important hero schools in the country, and as the sole one that televises its sport festival every year as a big spectacle on par with the Olympics, UA has both prestige and power. Probably more than other schools, in fact, considering they're always everyone's first choice both when it comes to enrolling in it and when pros needs interns and manpower to thicken their ranks. UA is the dream of many starry eyed kids who hope to make it big in the industry.
Yet, all that prestige and status doesn't stop them from becoming a target for public blame. The fact that the media put the school under scrutiny for how they handled the crisis at training camp is not just bad press for the school. It's also bad press for heroes in general because UA is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the hero industry. They train the best students to become top of the food chain once they reach pro. There's a reason why Bakugou, obsessed with being the best, wanted to enroll in UA and not, say, Shiketsu. UA's name itself is a pun on the Japanese word for "hero" (UA, read as Yuuei, is eiyuu, hero, backwards).
Tumblr media
So a failure of the school is a failure that is capable of shaking the trust in heroism itself. And that's precisely what worries the Commission.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After all, we know from later arcs that they don't actually care about endagering students at all. In fact, they're perfectly fine letting kids be on the frontlines of a war without even informing their parents of where their kids are being sent to. So, to tie this back to the question by the journalist above, the Commission isn't interested in reassuring the families of their students that the kids are fine. All they care about is what they've always cared about: spinning a narrative where faith in heroes is justified by results. Since heroes always return from a mission with a victory in the bag, the trust that the public puts in them, and thus the HPSC by association, is well-placed and needs not be questioned.
Tumblr media
So when the attack on training camp happens and the heroes face one of their first real losses—26 wounded, 1 kidnapped—the Commission scrambles to fix this PR disaster. Despite the sparse intelligence they have on the League, and despite their own reticence, they greenlight the Kamino raid anyway. They think that what they have is enough to sate the angry media into trusting them again. They'll rescue the kid and thus save face. And if in the process they can apprehend the League and destroy a noumu lab all at once? Even better. But publicly, it's for the kid.
Except, it turns out that the lab was a decoy, and not the original place where the noumu come from. It was planted there as a distraction, or possibly as a storage unit for Shigaraki to use freely, but disposing of it doesn't neutralize the threat of the noumu science itself. And indeed, AFO'S appearance soon after proves just that. He comes with more monsters in tow, and has his own teleporting quirk to move them around. Basically, AFO was playing two moves ahead of the HPSC. And I think Kamino is where the Commission finally realized that, too.
So what do they do next? They show us their real agenda for the first time and plant a mole in the League's ranks.
The primary goal of Hawks' infiltration was always that of finding out the true location of Ujiko's lab. Getting close enough to the League to better get the jump on them when they're vulnerable was only secondary. The proof is that the raid only gets a green light when Twice makes the mistake of mentioning the hospital to Hawks.
Tumblr media
And Hawks dutifully relays it to the Commission. Thanks to this intel, they track down the clinic, send an undercover agent, snap a pic of one of the little noumu, and deduce that's where the secret, underground villain lair was all along. And the operation—which is notably issued by the HPSC itself, which entrust it to Endvr—is a go.
And you know what's even more telling? That once Ujiko is safely in hero custody and can no longer make minions for AFO... All the pro heros finally get the authorization to kill the League on sight.
So yeah. That was a really roundabout way of saying that the times where the Commission assassinates its enemies in cold blood are far from over. The League were just lucky to have AFO behind them to buy them time. But eventually, even that ran out, because the HPSC is not, and has never been, sunshine and rainbows and second chances

i think the average conception of human paladins in wow is short-sighted, uninteresting, and overdone. crusaders aren't an interesting archetype, imo. theologians, teachers, scholars, and mentors are.
the purpose for which paladins were created had been completed a while ago; the growing unity of the alliance races means paladins as a means of defending the people from orcish hordes or scourge legions are simply obsolete. i see a lot of paladin roleplayers hang onto that notion, though.
i couldn't make randyll former, my oldest active oc, interesting based on those ideals. he didn't need to be the sort of guy the alliance or church feels the need to send away to fight in miscellaneous wars because his zealotry made him a danger to his own people (the true nature of crusader-types). but he could be a mentor, a scholar, a theologian, and father figure.
randyll has two master's degrees from the university of ironforge (go rams!) in law and religious studies. he was a lawyer for a few years before ever becoming a soldier and eventually a paladin. when injuries sustained in his late 30's forced him away from theaters of war, he turned to teaching and mentoring to serve in another way.
randyll married his partner vetharion featherblade five years ago. now, randyll featherblade-former is 43 years old with two children. he mentors young paladins, teaches a few different classes at a stormwind university, and does cultural and linguistic research for the dragonscale expedition.

@kasouu asked: don't cry for me when i die.
Tumblr media
a long bout of silence in the breeze, only the slightest rustle of grass ; distant birds flapping their wings as if they know better than to stick around.
metal glints, dark steel's beveled edge pressed to marred throat - threatening to cut at the very hint of breath.                         ( hawks would've preferred it to be the                            longest of the featherblades ) the largest primaries had yet to return, though they'd begun to try. prosthetics only got him so far and though the appendages had done their best to sheathe the feathers, the very roots had decayed under that extreme heat. hawks had still yet to reach his top speeds since then.
「 that made you happy, right? 」
brows twitch, a barely-there movement over an otherwise bored expression. one might think this is a daily occurrence, the hero's katana lingering against the burned flesh of a man only clinging to life's tethers                                          ( and how hawks wishes it were ) for the second time, such a threatening display is made ; though the last, it would've been a clean swipe to the right, decisive, quick, faster than the speed of sound.                                                      ----           this? this would be messy, it would take effort, the sight of changing expression well memorized.
after a while, hawks had stopped making eye contact with the victims.
                                                                             「 is that a joke? 」
closer, closer still, the pressure is on. gloved palm grips the weapon so tightly knuckles blanch under the leather, fabric creaking with the squeeze. fingers dig against the ito braiding, threatening to fray the cord and yet still, quiet, quiet.                                  ( all had been quiet until he said that )
Tumblr media
" when you told me your name, "
feathers chitter and shake, their frayed edges clicking against each other with a fear hawks himself does not feel -                                THERE IS NO POINT IN FEAR! anxiety, nerves, all of it is a mere hindrance ; a hiccup in the path, tripping over the means to an end with something as ridiculously simple as ' being human '.
                                                        「 what's the point? 」
dabi - tōya - could've killed hawks in an instant. it didn't matter if tokoyami had saved him or not, but it mattered if endeavor saw the damage, right? it mattered if the only shot they have at ending this stupid war was hurt just a little more, if those burning claws sunk in just a little deeper, it's that same hindrance, that same hiccup                                          ( A DISTRACTION FROM THE END! )
" i was surprised. "
「 YOU are so much                                                            more human                                                                        than i could ever be 」
distantly, there's the smell of iron. for all the would-be quaking strength of grip in the world, there's not even a centimeter of give in hawks' steady grasp. everything is controlled, down to the tiniest glint in the eyes ; nothing is without purpose. he learned that long ago, had it forced down his throat under the heel of the commission -                               ( had it shoved into his veins by his father                                 constantly slammed into it by his mother )
『 NOTHING AND NO ONE                                 COULD EVER BE WORTH TEARS 』
" i was surprised by a lot that happened then.    but most of all, that you, of anyone -    let something like that control you.    ' sentiment got to you after all ', right?                           ----           that's what you said. "
steadily the blade is lowered in a fluid gesture, though no other steps are taken. in hawks' wake, nothing more litters flesh than a papercut’s worth of damage ; something terribly unnoticeable in the grand scheme that is tōya. maybe in some other life he would've needed more than a few staples to keep his head attached, but that universe is not this one.
" i was surprised -    by how disappointed i was.    the longer i thought about you,    the more i understood what saying that to me --                                       ----             meant to you.    what it would eventually mean to endeavor.    i didn't tell him.    hearing it from me would have been easier.    he could've processed it.    i could have told him -- but, i didn't. "
with a swipe off to the side, any traces of blood are shirked from the weapon and into the grass. steel slips against the saya, pushing into the sheathe as hilt rests against hawks' thumb -- ' clink '. worn feathers, when angled just right against the breeze, sound off in a chime-like whistle ; blending with the rustling of the trees. it was louder once, at least a crowded rumble. by now it's all dulled, crashing waves reduced to seafoam.
" i thought if i believed you were even a little like me --    that maybe you knowing my name wouldn't be so bad.    maybe someone who understood would know the    significance of it, then.    even for a second, even when i thought it would end there ;                                   ' it could be worse.                                             it could've been someone worse. My investment advisor and I had great fun looking this last month looking at the ESG scores of investment funds and trading out some of my long-held ESG AA-rated funds for steady-looking BB-rated ones. So the tools are already there to do this. You just have to apply them in ways their creators didn’t quite intend.

Tate Gallery Teams up With Minecraft
Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter
21 November 2014
The Tate Gallery will exhibit some of its most famous works in 3D in the virtual world of Minecraft. But is this a good method of absorbing art?
Have you ever thought about stepping into an artwork and taking a little glimpse inside it?
The Tate is inviting people to take a stroll around its art and browse.
There will be no security guards on watch.
It has collaborated with the developers of Minecraft - the online game on computers where millions of players meticulously construct fantasy worlds block by block to create 3D versions of two of its artworks in a brand new virtual gallery.
Andre Derain's 1906 painting The Pool of London, and Christopher Nevinson's painting of New York, Soul of the Soulless City (1920) are the first two paintings to receive this digital 3D transformation.
"Visitors will be able to see a white square that is the Tate Gallery," explains Jane Burton, Creative Director of Tate Media.
"You walk in with the painting in your palm.
"What you can now do is take a walk towards the painting and dive into it. This is where the adventure begins."
Enter the art of
Visitors will have the chance to engage with the painting's world.
You'll be able to ride a train to get an up-close view of the cityscape of Nevinson, for instance. You can also stop for lunch with builders as they rest from building towers.
Visitors should be cautious of pirates on the Thames when they visit Derain's photograph. They may also play with explosive paint pigments.
"You will engage in activities and challenges that relate to the themes of the art.
Jane Burton, whose children introduced Jane to the potential and power of Minecraft, says, "It's art history adventure,"
Adam Clarke, a well-known Minecraft creator, first suggested that Minecraft exhibits should be created.
He came up with the idea for Tate's IK Prize. This prize is given to an idea that makes use of digital technology to engage people in the arts.
Tate used the talents of other famous Minecraft builders, including Featherblade, Featherblade, Dragnoz and Featherblade, to create the worlds that were inspired from the famous photographs.
However, not everyone is convinced.
Perspective
These Minecraft creations will provide younger, new audiences familiarity with artworks, and when they see the originals in galleries, it will be as "seeing an old friend", says Times art critic Rachel Campbell Johnston.
The feeling of being recognized, "like seeing celebrities" is a powerful tool for art appreciation and encouraging viewers. Jason Otto
She continues, "But ironically the Minecraft works themselves provide a flatter experience."
"It feels more like entertainment than a meaningful connection to the painting, when 3D mapping in Minecraft replaces the illusionistic surface of real painting and does the work for me."
Digital opening
You can download the two works of Derain and Nevinson beginning Monday
Minecraft players have to pay a fee to join, however the downloadable maps and Tate's pictures are free.
With six more 3D masterpieces on the way, many will be keeping an eye to see how large the queues are on Monday when Tate's Minecraft exhibition opens its digital doors.

"You are challenged to explore the world of activities and challenges which are connected to the themes of the artwork.
"It's art, history, and adventure," says Jane Burton, whose children introduced her to the wonders of Minecraft. HYPED PVP
The idea to exhibit in Minecraft originally came from artist Adam Clarke, who is an established creator in the Minecraft community.
He suggested the idea for Tate's IK Prize, which is awarded to an idea that uses digital technology to engage people with the arts.
When the concept finally came to fruition, Tate enlisted the skills of other famous Minecraft builders such as Dragnoz, Kupo, Featherblade and Tewkesape to create the worlds that were influenced by the famous photos.
However, not everyone is fully convinced.
Perspective
These Minecraft creations will provide younger audiences a better understanding of artworks to enable them to see original artworks in galleries. Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Times art critic, says it will feel like "seeing an old friend".
The feeling of being recognized, "like seeing a celebrity" is a powerful tool to aid art appreciation, and encourage audiences.
She continues, "But ironically the Minecraft works themselves provide a more pleasant experience."
"It feels more like entertainment than an imaginative relationship to the painting, as 3D mapping from [Minecrafts] replaces real painting's illusionistic surface, doing the work for me."

The two pieces by Derain and Nevinson will be available to download on Monday.

It’s ‘rare’ that you find a steakhouse that’s great value for money with big portion sizes and perfectly cooked meat. Steak is usually an expensive meal out but @featherblade_ located Leigh-on-Sea in Southend serves melt in your mouth meat that you won’t believe the price of. Whilst the menu is simple, it doesn't matter, because they have perfected their niche. Ribeye steak was amazing couldn't of been cooked any better, the creamy spinach is to die for and the halloumi are yummy to. All came out quickly on warm plates and service was quick. We were spoilt for choice with the wine list, but went for a bottle of Rioja which didn't disappointed. We look forward to returning again. #steakhouse #steaktime #steak #leigh #Southend (at Featherblade) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClCjna6KZbr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
