I just want the non-Finns to know that when Jere uses "good guy" to refer to both men and women, I am 100% certain it's because he's translating "hyvä tyyppi" into English, but the problem is that while Finnish is once again gender neutral here, English isn't. Gender neutral terms are generally difficult to translate into a more gendered language in a way that retains the same meaning and vibe.
He has a sauna whisk. A "vihta" or "vasta". Thwack.
In my webcomic; the whisk is used for banishing any sickness that has settled into one's body. A tool for spiritual healing. The elves created this technique.
And that's what it's used in real life too, just in a less spiritual sense. :)
Getting beaten with one is treated as massage therapy more or less. Silver birch (Betula pendula) branches are the go-to because they're sturdy and the leaves don't fall off as easily. Around midsummer the leaves are grown enough to make into whisk.
Personally never got into whisking at all though x'3
Based on Finnish lore, Tulikettu, also known as a firefox, is mysterious and whimsical at the same time. At night, his fur lights up like fire and as he trots across the snow, his tail sparks and creates the Northern Lights.
My firefox is doing a big stretch, with the galaxy and Northern Lights within him. Small backstitch detail is of the Vulpecula constellation, which is the "little fox."

Most of the people I have ended up talking about this, or tried to explain the point and meaning of vappu or juhannus to, have been from California or somewhere, and have usually been like: "Huh?".
As we say in Finland, "Suomen suvi on lyhyt mutta vähäluminen".
I've drawn Mikael with a train-theme a few times, I just like those two things together. Should draw a new one...
Although it only now occurs to me that a non-native Finn might not realise that he is in an overgrown train in this drawing.
This whole country has two types of trains: the other has red stripes, the other has green stripes. That's it. Like the one Mikael boarded on and now he's somewhere captive in time.
well there's some different coloured trains around the capital but they don't count
