This is kinda a part two to this post here, about Ballister’s scar. Specifically I wanted to speculate a bit on Ballister’s relationship with Queen Valerin when you consider the fact that he was a mistreated and vulnerable child when he met her

Like. Look at this moment here

She’s reassuring him. She genuinely believes in him, and it’s clear from the knighting ceremony, when she specifically lowers her voice to tell him how much she’s been looking forward to this moment that her intentions around him a pure. She wants to change things, she wants to give this kid a chance, and she’s killing two birds with one stone by making him a knight

But like Nimona herself says, question everything

Look a little bit closer at this image — the queen is well dressed and already had a statement prepared. Ballister is dressed in rags and looks like he hasn’t even been given the chance to wash his hair. He looks surprised and a little scared when the media erupts with questions. And I don’t think this was the Queen’s doing, necessarily — odds are the Director was the one who was supposed to prepare Ballister, and chose not to, because she probably knew that while the Queen wouldn’t judge him for looking like the homeless kid he was, the media would. Still, it shows that while the Queen has overall say on Ballister’s future, she doesn’t have a lot to do about his present

Ballister says he loves the Queen, but it’s hard to tell if he meant he loves her like you’d love a family member, or if he “loves” her like someone who has been raised to not question authority “loves” said authority. He took a deep breath and looked to Ambrosius during the knighting ceremony, not to her. She realistically probably wasn’t super involved, even if she wanted to be — she had an entire kingdom to run, other knights to knight, and likely spent her days making progressive decisions that were controversial with the conservatives in her kingdom. Plus, if she had been super involved, it could’ve increased bias against him, like she was favoring him above everyone else — Ambrosius seemed overall not sure popular among the knights, and while they respected his authority when he was put it charge, there was definitely a vibe that they resented him for being the “Golden Boy” descendant of Gloreth.

Let’s compare Bal and Queen Valerin to Comic!Ballister Blackheart and one of the Queen’s inspirations, Dr. Blitzmeyer (the other was the king, who was a basically prop that was referenced heavily in relation to Ballister as someone he should kill before dying off screen).

Blackheart and Blitzmeyer end the comic opening a lab together, working as co-scientists. Blackheart clearly thinks of her as a friend, but she thinks of him as a fond colleague for most of the comic — she’s happy to offer help in the form of exposition, and she helps him save the day by giving him a McGuffin That You Just Gotta Read The Comic To Understand, but part of her is worried he’s a rival scientist that wants to steal her ideas. She still welcomes him in her home and offers him team. When he’s at the end of his rope and needs a comfort hug, she awkwardly indulges him

She’s surprised when he puts her down as his emergency contact

Dr. Blitzmeyer is a quirky scientist that hangs out on conspiracy forums and probably practices witchcraft for the sake of scientific study. Queen Valerin is a warm and progressive monarch who makes controversial decisions. And they make big decisions regarding helping Ballister

Remember the reluctant McGuffin handover?

She’s weighing the odds of him lying to her and stealing/tampering with/destroying it, hesitating before trusting him. If she had said no, a lot more people would’ve died in the comic, but she had no way of knowing that. She was barely interested in looking out her window and just worried the thing she spent years on would be wrecked

Now, the Queen — we don’t see her weigh the pros and cons of letting Bal become a knight, but she had to. And consider what she was presented with: a homeless kid with either no family or an abusive one judging from his scars and bruises. He had no adults in his life to protect him. No one to tell her no, making him essentially a child soldier might not be in his best interest. And he jumped a fence into the middle of a knight training session declaring he wanted to be a knight, basically coming to her — essentially the perfect candidate for her semi-social experiment

I can totally see her in another world letting this kid into her home and giving him tea and comfort, but I don’t think she could here. While she meant good, she took in a kid with nothing to lose and gave him everything to lose (a home, education, likely his first friend, safety), while also putting him under unavoidable social pressure. And she did it while the only adult figure other than her in his life, the one who would actually be involved in his upbringing — the Director — openly and defiantly failed him from the get go, and protested letting him join the knights to her face

Y’all I adore Queen Valerin, even if we only got her for like five minutes. Even if it’s in a speculative sense I like that she’s a good person while morally gray actions. She very much improved Ballister’s circumstances by giving him a home and the opportunity to pursue his interests. She clearly cared about him. She’s also a politician who, even if unavoidably, lowkey set him up to be a scapegoat without a backup plan and no outside support

one thing i noticed (and loved!!!!) in nimona is the different eye-shine shapes. specifically the way they changed as the story progressed, specifically focusing on ballister and ambrosius

in this first scene their eyeshines are a very similar square diamond shape. they still share it right after the part where ambrosius cuts ballister's arm off

however immediately after, when ballister falls through the hole in the platform we get a brief shot of his face:

later we see ballister creating his new arm, and immediately after when nimona knocks on the door we see his eyes again, and the shines are completely square. not really any ambiguity to it, the tilt of them is entirely gone

ballister isnt super consistent with this, but from here on his eyeshines remain mostly square. there are a few moments when they tilt again to resemble how they were in the first scene, eg. when he's telling nimona he's not a villain, and when she reminds him that ambrosius cut off his arm and he tells her its complicated, as well as more later that i wont get into now

BUT!!! a bit later, when he and nimona bump into ambrosius as they're breaking out of the castle,

wow look at that they match again! ballister's are a bit more square and ambrosius's are more elongated, but again they have a very similar shape! however immediately after...

the first screenshot here is when he says "did you see the way he looked at me?" to nimona. the second is right after he says "he really thinks I killed the queen." by this point you probably can tell where i'm going with this post

also this is the part where i just now noticed nimona's upper earring on her left ear is a star hoop :) very neat

nimona snaps ballister out of his daze (square again), makes him promise he wont freak out (still square) and then he rides off on rhino-nimona (square). when he sees and almost runs over ambrosius in the hallway, the brief seconds he's looking at him, his eyeshines tilt again into a diamond. no screenshot of this one because it's hard to get the timing right on motion shots

when ballister wakes up back at the lair they're square again

when he's looking at the photo wall (at ambrosius's photo specifically) i expected them to become diamonds again, but here they stay square! i am quickly realizing this post is mostly an excuse to stare closely at ballister's big baby seal eyes

in the photo ambrosius's eyeshines are triangles which isn't a shape we've seen on him before. i dont think this really means anything though its just neat

skipping to the part where ambrosius says he'll be the one to hunt down ballister, his eyeshines are triangular here too, in person this time

during his declaration to "find ballister, and bring him to me" however his eyeshines are briefly diamond shaped again

back to bal. in the subway, both nimona's version of ballister and the real ballister have square eyeshines.

in the next scene where the knights are looking at the subway footage, ambrosius's eyeshine shape has changed again:

they are now long triangles. my eyesight isnt awesome so the first time i watched this part i thought they were hearts :) but theyre triangles

i dont have it in me to rewatch the entire movie for this post so skipping to way later when ballister is trying to convince ambrosius the director is the one behind the queen's murder. the lines said are important here too

the line bal is saying in that screenshot is "it doesn't matter. you shouldn't need proof. you know i'm not a murderer." then:

AND THEN:

during their nacho meetup at the [checks notes] tavern? bar? nacho place? whatever. their eyeshines are square and triangle respectively

[ID: three consecutive shots of their conversation. Ballister has square eyeshines; then Ambrosius has triangular eyeshines; the last picture is of Ambrosius putting his hand over Ballister's prosthetic one. /end ID]

their shapes remain this way for a while until a key moment where ballister looks at nimona's rampage and realizes he fucked up BAD

it's not clear in the screenshot but the fire in the background is ALSO diamond shaped which probably means nothing but again, is pretty neat

and then yeah basically from there their eyeshines stay the same shape to the end of the movie including the epilogue. i cant add any more images to this post though so i will have to stop here!!! just take my word for it. their (i say their but i really mean ballister's, because ambrosius doesn't get any more good eye shots after the beginning of the epilogue) stay their respective shape until the very end

"wow, nik, this post was beyond pointless" you might be thinking and yeah maybe!!! this may be all coincidence and i may be looking for things that are not even remotely there!!! but guess what i sat here for over an hour taking screenshots and putting this post together so by god i WILL see it to its end

my idea is that the changing eyeshine shapes represent their paths splitting and then coming back together again. at the beginning they have the same eyeshine shape; they're together, they understand each other, they think the same way. (this is a good time for me to note that the director's eyeshine shape is also a vertically oriented rhombus.)

then the betrayal happens. ballister kills the queen, ambrosius cuts of ballister's arm. they still have the same eyeshine shape here; but then ballister falls and ambrosius doesn't fall with him. this is where they separate - this is the betrayal

after making himself a prosthetic ballister's eyeshines are a different shape, more clearly now. he is apart from ambrosius, they're no longer a unit. however his eyeshines still appear as diamonds occasionally, namely in moments where he's with or thinking about ambrosius (or the institute, im mainly thinking of the "im not a villain" line when he's thinking i'm still a knight, i'm still good)

ambrosius's eyeshines are still the same diamond-like shape. when he and ballister see each other again they briefly share a shape again. it's not as similar anymore, and they're not the same as they were. there's still this rift of betrayal between them. but in that moment they're having, well, a moment

in the closet when he's thinking of ambrosius's betrayal (did you see the way he looked at me?) his eyeshines change between square and diamond

then cut to ambrosius, who's eyeshines are also a different shape now: when he's formalizing his betrayal to he and ballister's relationship, officially declaring that he will be the one to hunt him down. but there's a moment where his armor is being put on where he looks down with guilt and diamond shaped eyeshines

i dont even want to talk about the subway footage part because i still keep mistaking the long triangles for hearts which is killing me. killing me DEAD. if his eyeshines were really hearts when he was saying things like "something doesn't feel right, he hates freestyle jazz" i think i'd just explode or something. moving on

during the confrontation at the institute, before ballister tries to pull out the phone and is telling ambrosius he has proof, ambrosius's eyeshines are diamonds! just like in the beginning! i think here it's more representative of how he wants to believe ballister, despite the director whispering in his ear not to, how he badly wants for all of this to be a misunderstanding and for proof that ballister didn't betray the institute, didn't betray him. he doesn't want to lose his best friend (and more)

but ballister's eyeshines are square here- like he says a few seconds later, "you shouldn't need proof." he's being betrayed again, ambrosius doesn't believe in him after all. but even when pointing a sword at ballister he looks at him with diamond eyeshines. when nimona begins doing her thing his eyeshines are triangles again, like he and ballister are fully diverging paths again

you get the idea. their eyeshines are representing of their emotions about, and relationship with each other. so then why don't they go back to the diamond shape at the end of the movie? why are their eyeshines different even when it's clear that they've made up, they're happy now, things are different?

well i DO have an explanation for this. things are different now! they're no longer under the thumb of the institute (is this a good time to mention again that the director's eyeshines are also diamonds), a section of the wall is down, the kingdom is different! it's changing!

and so have they! the way i'm choosing to read into this, is that they're not the same people as they were at the beginning of the movie. they're not both brainwashed into thinking the same way, having the same ideology where cutting off your boyfriend's arm instead of disarming him isn't only justifiable, it's what's expected. now they're their own people, who aren't under constant pressure of a legacy or an institute. they've grown! and now it's okay that they don't think the exact same, because they love each other, and are now capable of loving each other like this

tldr this movie is great i love it here :)

obviously this might all just be a coincidence and im just overthinking it lol but whatever i spent this long reading into it i might as well hit post

hey if they made a Nimona tv series or something...

what if another kingdom's ruler came to visit for diplomatic/trade reasons

and the ruler was an asshole. let's call him King Dick

he saunters in like he owns the damn place

and takes one look at Bal and goes "ah, yes. this one"

straight up gets down on one knee and proposes

Bal obviously says no, a bit flustered and awkward

King Dick brushes this off

meanwhile Ambrosius is glaring at the king

the other knights are getting a bit nervous

Ambs is well known for being protective of Bal

he also has a history of biting

but he keeps his cool and jealously casually puts his arm around Bal

King Dick does not like this

for like, a few days or so he makes a point of trying to woo Bal

keeps bringing him flowers, offering him riches, interrupting dates with Ambrosius

who eventually gets sick of it

so he challenges King Dick to a duel to leave Bal alone

King Dick takes it has being for Bal's hand and accepts

Ambs just wants to beat the king until he either leaves Bal alone or stops moving

whichever come first

(he's hoping it's the latter)

on Bal's end, this whole thing has been a pretty uncomfortable experience and he doesn't necessarily like Ambrosius being jealous

on the other hand, two rich, important guys are fighting over him, and in all fairness to King Dick he's actually pretty attractive in a smarmy Gaston-like way and a pretty good fighter

it makes him feel special

so he's just enjoying the show for a bit while he waits for Ambs to win

Nimona has just spent this entire plot laughing her ass off and egging Ambs on

she's just having the time of her life

like whatever the state of her relationship with Ambs at this point, she definitely considers him the better option for Bal

anyway King Dick is actually doing really well holding his own against Ambs and eventually they fight to a standstill, neither will yield

Bal's fed up. with the fight and with the king

he's tried to be polite for the sake of diplomacy but he's had enough of being harassed

so he gets between the pair of them

grabs King Dick as though he's gonna kiss him

and head-butts him as hard as he can

(bonus points if the king's wearing a helmet)

then he turns to Ambs and tells him to come get cleaned up

Ambrosius.exe stops working

he kinda nods vaguely and follows Bal to get some medical attention

Nimona loved the whole thing

she's a bit concerned how Bal did that tho

like she's seen him to it before how does he not have a concussion??

now she wants Bal to get checked out too

King Dick eventually wakes up and threatens war if Bal doesn't marry him

everyone's worried until the rest of King Dick's government officials arrive

it turns out King Dick's kingdom is run by a parliament

his family have been powerless figure-heads for generations. he has absolutely no power or authority to declare war

meanwhile the officials are begging for forgiveness for their king trying to steal Ambrosius' (currently the highest authority in the kingdom) boyfriend

everything gets sorted without issue after this

tho King Dick swears vengeance

WHEN THE LASER NEARLY HIT BAL, AMBROSIUS TRYS TO KNOCK IT OUT OF HIS HANDS BEFORE HE GETS EVEN MORE HURT AND HE ENDS UP ACCIDENTALLY CHOPPING OFF HIS ARM 😭🤧

Then the chandelier falls and everyone thinks he died, (including ambrosius) but... just like in the movie, there was a space below where he could escape and run into the forest to the random ass tower he has in the movie 🤓

Ballister stays there for a bit trying to figure out who tried to kill him with the 'murder wall'. While Ambrosius is...uh-

Nimona found the tower... (completely by chance i swear)

Not expecting to find Ballister trying to figure out who "murdered" him-

they become friends and stuff like in the movie 😦 (I'm lazy)

Maybe Nimona thinks he's a villain due to...well...the 'evil lair' and his *cough* emo clothes-- *cough* (thats just an idea tho :>)

Nimona: NO! You are not going to risk your life just to tell your boyfriend you're okay! Heck, for all we know, he could have been the one that tried to kill you!

Context: Ballister wanting to make sure Ambrosius is alright, and Nimona not wanting to risk Ballister actually getting killed this time (sorry I'm kinda rushing this i have to go somewhere soon 😭)

Ok so another au idea but story barely changes because this post focuses on Todd. I had small conversation with someone in one of my post made my brain go explode and remember the small scenarios I have with my own nice Todd and it made me giggle cause of the friendship.

In this au, Todd's relationship with Ballister started rough because the boy is insensitive and doesn't realize it.

He was always left confused as to why Ballister seemed so mad everytime they run into each other until Ambrosius (they're friends here) tells Todd about his problem of being rude to others without realizing it.

Upon knowing this Todd feels guilty and plans to apologize to Ballister, before also realizing that he must have done the same thing to Ambrosius a couple of times as well, so apologized to Ambrosius before looking for Ballister (Ambrosius helped him apologize to Ballister).

From then on, Ballister had two best friends who protects him from the bullying and the hate.

Todd developed a crush on Ballister, but soon discovers later that Ambrosius has a crush on Ballister as well. They would have become rivals if Ambrosius didn't share the fact that he(Ambrosius) had been crushing on Ballister before the three of them became best friends.

Todd felt bad knowing that Ambrosius had hid his feelings for so long while he just developed it recently, so he gave up and helped Ambrosius instead.

Cut to Todd's terrible wingman skills whenever Ballister is around. It always results into Ambrosius glaring at him while Todd just smiles and gives him a thumbs up.

Ambrosius: *whispering* "wuh- Todd! what are you doing?!?" Todd: *whispering back* "trying to get you alone with Ballister!" Ambrosius:*whispers angrily* "WITH A RUBBER CHICKEN AND A SANDWHICH?!?"

Surprisingly it works and Ambrosius has no idea why but he'll think about that later, and he'll also thank Todd about it.

At some point, Todd tells Ambrosius that he also had a crush on Ballister but gave it up so Ambrosius could have Bal instead. Made Ambrosius feel bad but Todd reassures him that its fine, and that it would hurt Ambrosius more if he(Todd) would end up with Ballister when Ambrosius had been crushing on him for years.

Soon Ambrosius and Ballister made it official, which made Todd happy for them. Despite the change of relationship, the trio stayed close and would always include Todd.

Except for date nights of course.

As a result, Todd became their child. Always keeping an eye on him and making sure that Todd doesn't accidentally insult someone without realizing it was an insult and to translate what Todd meant to others.

Ambrosius and Ballister would say "mean word/s" to let Todd know. And Todd would correct himself.

Will also add that Todd has the habit to just not continue or pause when he speaks because he assumes that others know what he is talking about, so Ballister and Ambrosius has to always give him a sign to let him know he needs to explain more.

No idea how the story would go in this version because I only focused on the silly Todd moments. Have two scenes that I thought of: Knighting ceremony Ambrosius helped Ballister into his armor, adjusting his shoulder pads in place to secure it. Ballister turned around, smiling at him as if to tell him thank you from his smile. Ballister was about to speak when suddenly an arm was placed over his shoulder which a bit of force which took him and Ambrosius by surprise.

"Hey Ballister, I know things were really tough for you back then, and I really thought you don't belong here." Todd finishes and lightly punched Ballister's shoulder. They were silent for a moment, expecting Todd to continue but didn't.

"And?"

"And what? You proved me wrong and now you're going to be a knight." Todd answers , feeling confused before realizing why both of them seem to look like they were anticipating something.

"Oh, did I do it again? Sorry." Todd apologized, taking his arm off of Ballister before moving to rub the back of his neck sheepishly.

"No worries. it's all right" Ballister reassured him with a smile.

Punchable face "I don't need a si-" "Every villain needs a sidekick"

"I'm not a villain-"

"WOAH! sick murder wall!" Nimona exclaims, excitedly hoping over to the said wall with pictures of people and evidence. "Are these your next targets?" "What?" "Who do you want to kill first?" Nimona asks, tapping her fingers together in a sinister way. Her eyes dart around the pictures on the wall before settling on the picture of Todd with a smug smile on his face. She gasps before pointing towards it. "THIS ONE! This one looks extremely punchable!" Nimona clenched her fist with an excited grin as she pictures herself beating the punchable guy. "Don't say that! He's actually really nice!" Ballister said, clearly offended about what she said about Todd. "Well, he can be insensitive but he's just not aware of it sometimes- wait no- GAH, THAT IS NOT A MURDER WALL!"

I got bored so here's a few things I noticed in Nimona that either made my day or made me cry or made me question everything I know. No in-between.

Also, yes, I know, almost everyone already pointed most of this out, but I just had to do it as well. It was destroying my brain. This is gonna be a long one too.

Nimona Spoilers!

The Director, not the Queen, being the one to give Ballister his sword for the first time, showing how much she truly worked to show Bal is the true villain, probably acting with him as she would any other knight all throughout his training and caring for him, making her betrayal that more hurtful for Bal.

Probably everyone expecting Ambrosius to be that classic "Noble asshole who's gonna make Bal's life hard just because he's a commoner" but instead not only is he kind, and goofy and himself around him but they're DATING!

At the beginning, they make out how most people aren't accepting of Bal being a knight, but in reality, we only see three people disagree with it, and the whole kingdom cheers for him when he's knighted (until his sword kills the queen that is)

Ambrosius slightly swinging his dangling feet when he's sitting with Bal. (Not that important but I just found that cute)

The first time we really see the clear difference between commoners, nobles and Gloreth's descendant is when they're putting on their armor. Nobles = Grey, white and gold. Gloreth's descendant = White and gold. Commoner = Black and grey.

Todd coming in, we haven't even heard of him at all so far, and yet we all hate him immediately because of how much of an asshole he is.

Also, Ambrosius' reactions and facial expressions when Todd is insulting Bal. Just, it's cute. Protective BF Ambrosius.

Bal knowing his sword doesn't feel right.

The Director telling Bal "Today the kingdom will see you for who you really are." Foreshadowing that they will see him as a queen-murdering villain and that she's the bitch who framed him.

"Wait, what do you mean? You think I'm her favorite?" Clearly not. She hates you. But that doesn't matter because we love you and your wet kitten eyes <3

The Director having the fucking audacity to look horrified. Also, the sword fired 2 shots. Does that mean she was hoping for someone else to get hurt/die?

Ambrosius looking fucking horrified, scared and confused as he looks down the hole the thingy made falling down as he watched his boyfriend(?) walk away, clearly in pain.

Nimona's "It ain't that kind of kingdom. And it ain't that kind of story." being a parallel to what Bal says at the end.

One of the first things we hear when Nimona approaches the thing talking about Bal is "Not since Gloreth's monster has anything been so hated." So Nimona basically learns that someone is hated as much as her.

Bal canonically being able to take care of an amputated arm and build a prosthetic, but also him canonically listening to Grrrl Like is just funny to me.

Imma stop there because this is literally just the first ten minutes. Might make another one though!

ok i see everyone's "ballister and ambrosius as nimona's parents" stuff but i'm going to raise you this

Ballister and Dr. Blitzmeyer as nimona's parents

I know there's the Gay Dad au sanctifying ambrosis as nimona's dad but he seems to get frustrated with Nimona more frequently than Ballister and I kinda got the sense that adopting her was mostly Bal's choice. Don't get me wrong, ambrosius has moments where he enjoys himself and he loves her, but I don't think he's thrilled abt the idea of her being here forever. He gives "good at babysitting but needs to give the child back at a certain point" vibes and obviously he can't do that when it's his kid

However in the Everything Is Fine au (the one where they all live in the cabin in the woods) Blitzmeyer is Nimona's guardian and they move from the city to the woods together, eventually moving in w Bal and Ambrosius.

Besides this au I don't think Blitzmeyer and Nimona ever interact, but I thought it was very interesting how the one time they do, she's also Nimona's guardian (I believe that's the word ND Stevenson uses, not "parent.") Already in this one picture, they look happier than Ambrosius did lol

I'm sure movie ambrosius would be much more willing to try and get to know nimona but what if the sticking point is with her this time? She can't get over what he did to both her and Bal, he reminds her too much of Gloreth, she's still wary of anyone that was that ingrained in the institute, and a million other things. She knows he's really trying and feels bad about everything but bc of all she's been through, she's not quick to trust people who betrayed her. Especially if she's only had bad interactions with them until this point. She avoids/shuts down his attempts to connect with her and is generally closed off and angry when he's there. It's like a kid hating their new stepparent lol Both Bal and Ambrosius know it's nothing personal, just the defense mechanism that's kept her safe from people like ambrosius for so long, but it still hurts. Eventually, he gives up trying to reach out to her and figures maybe she'll come to him or maybe they just won't be as close as he hoped.

Now, Bal's weird science friend is someone more Nimona's speed lol Blitzmeyer has somehow remained almost completely immune to institute propaganda, doesn't really care abt breaking things (the law included) if it can further her work in some way, and is just kooky enough to appeal to Nimona. She lets nimona help in the lab and doesn't mind the million questions she asks because that's just another opportunity to talk abt her work. They go on some adventures getting stuff for Blitzmeyer's experiments and really bond. Eventually they become pretty close and Nimona frequently goes out of her way to see Blitzmeyer.

One night late in the lab, Bal mentions that Nimona really likes her and Dr Blitzmeyer is like "really? no, not that much." And Bal's like "no, really that much. About as much as she likes me actually." And then with creeping awareness they both slowly look at each other with the realization that they're co-parenting now and actually have been for a while. After the initial freak out, they keep going almost like normal but throw in an outing every other month or so. They'll take Nimona for ice cream or some other casual thing and she's none the wiser that they've figured her out. One night as they were coming home from a movie or smth Nimona says, "I'm so glad we did this, I love spending time with my two favorite people." Nimona keeps walking but they have to stop to silently freak out to each other a bit lol

The only problem is that they frequently get mistaken for a nuclear family on these outings. And it doesn't help that Bal and Blitzmeyer often refer to each other as "my partner." (They open a lab together at the end of the comic and I think they would as well after the movie, so they are literally business partners and lab partners. But I like to hc them in a queer platonic relationship as well, so the word "partner" has a double meaning here. Ambrosius is Bal's romantic partner and Blitzmeyer is his platonic partner. They all talked abt it, it's all good.) Every time this happens though, Bal has to explain that they're just friends and he actually has a husband back at home. Some people go "ok, 'just friends,' sure. wink wink nudge nudge ;)" or "ok... does your husband know...? That you... and her...? ok, ok." It makes Bal angry when this happens but neither him or Blitzmeyer cares enough to actually do anything about it. Nimona just laughs at the stranger's confusion at their unconventional family.

Anyway, they're just two friends who somehow found themselves raising a 1000 year old shapeshifter together lol Ambrosius is disappointed Nimona didn't like him as much as he hoped but now he can just stay home and vibe lol

I’m bored and it’s late for me, so here’s some Nimona headcanons.

Ballister is ambidextrous.

Ambrosius is the big spoon while Ballister is the little spoon.

Nimona loves to scare Ballister and Ambrosius by changing into each other, but there’s like a 50/50 chance they realize it’s actually her.

It took Ballister awhile for him to fully trust Ambrosius.

It also took Nimona some time to trust Ambrosius.

Sometimes, Ballister has nightmares about the Queen, Ambrosius cutting off his arm, etc.

Ambrosius has nightmares about him cutting off his boyfriends arm, not believing him, etc.

Nimona also has nightmares about Gloreth and everything that has happened to her. They’re all traumatized.

Sometimes, Nimona, Ambrosius, and Ballister go out to dinner.

People often stare at them.

The three of them are basically famous and well-known because of what they are.

Ambrosius is used to it, Ballister is nervous, and Nimona is chaotic.

Ambrosius would wait for however long it took for Ballister to trust him.

Ambrosius fell first and Ballister fell harder.

They can all play various instruments with Ballister knowing drums, guitar, and piano. He also knows how to sing. Nimona knows how to play the electric guitar, and Ambrosius knows how to sing and play the harp.

Ambrosius tries to sleep in while Bal wakes up at the ass crack of dawn.

Nimona AU - How to train your Dragon

@kestrel-wylde I kinda went nuts here...

During a dragon raid, the chief of Berk, Valerin's husband died.

They were both alternating battling dragons and helping their people.

When Valerin found her dead husband's body, she saw that he'd been burned badly.

Then she found that the reason his arms were tucked into himself was because he had been doing his best to protect a small bundle in his arms.

It was a baby. Since his parents seemed to have died in the raid as well, Valerin had decided to take the child under her care and adopted him since she and her husband haven't the chance to conceive yet.

Time skip to the future.

Ballister was an only child to his biological parents but if he ever did have siblings, he would've been considered the 'runt of the litter', as he didn't seem as well built for a Viking child his age.

At least, compared to the other Viking children his age.

Maybe Valerin and Ballister has a better relationship than Stoick and Hiccup did in the start of this AU story.

The conflict for Ballister is getting the village to accept his as the chiefess's scion and future chief.

Maybe when Ballister finds out and starts training Nimona, his reason for wanting to keep the secret is as to not make his reputation worse. [I don't know yet how he ends up injuring her like Hiccup did Toothless in the movie]

I just added my OCs for more character dynamics, like the original team had in the movie but feel free to use them or not or make your own OPs for the AU hahaha 😆

Some dialogue ideas...

Ballister, voiceover as a narrator: [Tomorrow, when training begins, I'm going to prove myself and show that I can stand at par with the others. Aerin Shieldstone, Connor Silverlock, Todd Sureblade, Abigail Swiftfeet, Atticus Valorarm and...]

Ambrosius was running away from some dragons, and he jumped over some barrels as a Zippleback launched a fireball at him.

Ballister, in a dreamily way: [... Ambrosius...]

Avoiding the impact of the blast, Ambrosius used the remaining leverage from jumping over the barrels to backflip away and ended up landing unto Ballister's arms...

Ambrosius, grinning: Good looking out, Bal.

Ambrosius pinches Ballister's cheek affectionately before leaping out of his arms, grabbing his axe and a bucket to see if there's anywhere else he needs to be...

Ambrosius: Look alive, Bal! Let's get rid of these beasts! Ballister, grabbing a sword: Right behind you, Ambs!

Trainer: Behind these doors are just a few of the many species you will learn to fight! The Deadly Nadder! Atticus, mumbling: Speed: eight; Armor: sixteen. Trainer: The Hideous Zippleback! Atticus: Plus eleven stealth times two. Trainer: ...The Monstrous Nightmare! Atticus: Firepower: fifteen. Trainer: The Terrible Terror! Atticus: Attack: eight; Venom: twelve! Trainer: CAN YOU STOP THAT?! Trainer, sighing: And the Gronkle. Atticus, more quietly: Jaw strength: eight. Connor, smirking: Someone's done some advanced reading... Ambrosius, chuckling: Only about a lot, too Atticus, smiling sheepishly: I read the book seven times. Ambrosius and Connor: Wow.

During training with the Gronkle to avoid getting hit...

Aerin, keeping his eyes on the Gronkle's location: Todd, keeping his eyes on Aerin: So, I moved to my parent's basement. Todd: Got some weights in there, you should come over some time to work out. Aerin, barrel rolls away: Todd, calling out to him: You look like you work out!

Then, the Gronkle hits a shot on the spot Todd was standing at...

Aerin and Connor - my OCs, besties Atticus and Abigail - OCs I remembered reading from your fic 'Love At First Fight', I just gave Atticus a temporary last name. Unless, you know, @kestrel-wylde wants to make it final haha I didn't write Abigal yet since I don't know much how to write the character. Atticus is based off the otter knight from the movie, so I kinda headcanon him as someone nerdy with animal facts, so I made him like Fishlegs here.

(Ballister doesn’t get framed AU. Needed to write this for mental health purposes. A little suggestive nsfw-ish and nightmares under the cut.)

“Let a new era of heroes begin with you.”

Ballister bowed his head again as the sword was slipped back into his hands. He put it back in its sheath where it belonged. Ballister smiled and nodded to the Queen as he stood. He went to stand in his spot beside Ambrosius. For a moment, he wanted to kiss his boyfriend in front of the whole kingdom, but held himself back. That felt like the kind of grand gesture that should be talked about beforehand. He felt something touch his hand and glanced down to see Ambrosius gently weaving their fingers together. For a moment he thought he might cry at such a simple action during a huge event where anyone and everyone could see. A descendant of Gloreth holding the hand of a commoner… no, he was holding the hand of a knight.

“I told you they’d love you,” Ambrosius whispered.

They smiled at each other for a moment before turning back to pay attention to the rest of the ceremony. Their hands staid linked until the very end.

Laughter rang out as Ambrosius tackled him to the bed. He was already nipping at Ballister’s throat and pulling at his shirt.

“Darling! Darling, wait—“

“But I want to make love to the sexiest hero of the realm!” His lover pouted.

“The honor is all mine, trust me,” Ballister said through his laughter. “But there’s something I need to do first.”

Ambrosius got up and sat on his knees, waiting patiently for whatever Ballister was going to do.

“It isn’t much,” Ballister said, taking something from his bedside drawer. He sat up, gripping something in his hand. “But I made them for us using metal from some of our old armor.”

He opened his fist and showed him two rings. One was black with a band of gold running through the middle, the other gold with black.

“Bal?” Ambrosius’ voice was shaking.

“Will you marry me?” Ballister asked, looking up at him with hopeful brown eyes.

Ambrosius kissed him and tackled him to the bed again.

“Was that a yes?”

“Yes! Of course it’s a yes!” Ambrosius said through the strange mixture of tears and laughter.

They wiped the happy tears away and put the rings on each other. This was followed by even more happy tears and sweet kisses that lead to… well…

Ballister was still shaking and sweaty in Ambrosius’s arms. His breath was slowing down from the swift, short panting that had echoed each thrust from his lover.

“I love you,” was whispered in his ear.

“I love you, too,” he whispered back.

~*~

Ballister woke up gasping for breath. His body involuntarily gave a violent jerk waking up Ambrosius, too.

“Bal? Bal, are you okay?”

He loosened his grip and ran a soothing hand over Ballister’s right arm, the dark skin warm under his fingers.

Ballister nodded, a little shaky. He wasn’t a stranger to nightmares, but this one felt different. It was like he could truly feel the pain of having an arm severed from his body. He raised his right hand to his face and opened and closed it in front of his eyes, trying to convince himself it was still flesh and bone.

Ambrosius nuzzled the side of his neck and kissed just behind his ear in an effort to soothe his new fiancé.

“It wasn’t real,” Ambrosius whispered against his neck. “You’re okay. You’re safe with me.”

Yes. He was safe with Ambrosius. Why would his sleeping mind ever tell him otherwise? His love would never do such a thing…

Ballister nodded. “Y-yeah. Just a dream.”

“Can I get you anything?”

“No, just…just hold me.”

“I’m already holding you,” a soft chuckle in his voice.

“Tighter. Please.”

Ambrosius did as he was told, curling against Ballister’s back. Soon they fell asleep again, the dream fading from Ballister’s memory before morning.
