These Freeguild Cavaliers have been a journey. Over a month from primer to painted, no small amount of cursing over broken flagpoles and missed details, and a mental exercise of finding a variety of colors that work within my existing Greywater Fastness scheme. I’m so, so glad to be done with them. While I think they’re gorgeous miniatures and they’re a delight to assemble, painting them is genuinely one of the most challenging and laborious processes I’ve encountered in all my years in the hobby. Thanks to Games Workshop for the review copy.

New Freeguild Steelhelms give me some big Ankh-Morpork City Watch vibes. Like even just the humans already feel like a very motley crew.
Tumblr media
Like, I could very easily make a City Watch army or at least a Warcry team. An Ironbreaker for Cheery, a Troggoth for Detritus, and boom, City watch.
(Maybe get a gnoblar head for Nobby)

Monke pirate with big gun (:
Converted from the powder monkey that comes in the empire/freeguild handgunner set. Going to eventually use him as a Ratling for my feudal guard.

Productivity is the name of the game this week, I've busted out 4 models!! I don't understand how I did it or why all I know is that I did 😌
First up is a terminator Librarian , fun sculpt with a dynamic pose really impressed with how many runes they managed to squeeze onto this large man, I also tried my hand at trying a skin colour that I've not done before, turned out pretty well I think 🤔
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is the terminator captain, I spent longer on the cloak that the entirety of the model like, why I thought putting flames inside the cloak where you won't see them I'll never know
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With them 2 done I thought I'd finally finished the space marine half of the leviathan box, then I found the terminator teleport beacon, I decided to make it feel more salamander and places it in a lava pool 🤘
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also had an excursion to my local GW and found they're having a small Painting comp, so with a few pokes and strokes I knocked out this guy in record time, can't remember the model name but I know it's a free guild mini 😅
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's been a bit of improvement in my speed painting skill, but this is mainly down to practicing and not comparing my final product
Remember y'all, paint the grey, practice a bit a day if you can and don't compare, as comparison is the thief of joy.
Til next time rock on 🤘

Not sure if I intended this to be a full redesign/modernization of the Warhammer Steam Tank or simply a "spiritual successor" for the Mortal Realms, but regardless - This is my design for the "Ironweld Steam Tank.
A mobile & reliable war machine who's turned the tide of many a battle for the ever-expanding Dawnbringer Crusades. Though requiring regular maintenance & incapable of traversing more rough terrain, these mechanized beasts more then make up for it with their heavy armor, inbuilt Ironweld Great Cannon, & engine-powered transportation. This marvelous creation serves as a monument to human & duardin ingenuity, craftmanship, & cooperation towards a unified home within the Mortal Realms.
I've actually had this drawing done for awhile now, but procrastination will forever be my enemy.

Painted up my empire steam tank finally. Its not quite done, but here's the new scheme I'm doing for my cities. Its based on the Blackstone legion from for honor.
That new manticore hero has a helmeted option that really reminds me of apollyon, so I figured I'd run with the idea.

The new marshall is gonna be a conqueror, and the steelhelms are gonna be based on the minions in the background

Cities of Sigmar thoughts
I know we haven’t seen everything yet, but I’m starting to worry that the Freeguild/Empire army roster is going to go from
Wizards (8 Lores of Magic)
Swordsmen
Spearmen
Halberdiers
Crossbowmen
Handgunners
Knights (Lances + Shields)
Knights (Great Weapons)
Mortar
Cannon
Hellstorm Rocket Battery
Hellblaster Volley Gun
To
Wizard (Metal)
Swordsmen
Handgunners
Knights (Shields)
Cannon?
Like AoS models have such better variety than 40k, but they lack so much wargear options. The new Cities of Sigmar models seem to have a great deal of cosmetic customisation, but what does that mean if over half the unit loadouts are cut? I thought with the Freeguild Marshal we were going to get more options.
People say Space Marines are the best selling army, but there are actual reasons why. Space Marines have tons of units and weapons, you can bring a new army to the table every time. Even if you only want to play your favourite playstyle each time, you can probably find a Marine subfaction that does it well. I worry that the Freeguild meanwhile are 1) going to become incredibly repetitive to play, and 2) attract less players by casting a smaller net of possible playstyles.
Furthermore, and this is more subjective, I’m not sure if I like how the models look. The details aren’t bad, I do like them individually, but there’s too much. I like an army where the units get progressively more detailed the more elite they become. When even the most basic units are at a 10, there’s nowhere to go, and I feel like the heroes are just going to get lost.
I kind of wanted the Freeguild to just be updated Empire soldiers, similar to the Seraphon. Instead they’re a redesign. I wanted GW to make the basic Empire soldiers for the Old World in nice plastic, then FW could make resin cosmetic upgrades for the different Empire provinces or Knightly orders. But that’s not how it’s going. As it is, the Cities of Sigmar update has gone from something I was super interested in, to something that’s not for me personally.

Sending 2023 out with a bang! The Ironweld Great Cannon, kindly provided to me by Games Workshop for review. A delightful model to build, often comfortable and easy to paint, but one that definitely benefits from subassemblies.

I first thought Seraphon or Freeguild for AOS, but some have pointed out this matches some early art for Catachan weapons?
