In the run-up to Thermidor, as a treat punishment penance Frevolutionary sort of Stations of the Cross, I'm making my way through Colin Jones's The Fall of Robespierre: 24 Hours in Revolutionary Paris. It's riveting, the way live updates on a disaster are riveting, which is to say it's agony because I know what's coming and I can neither stop it nor look away.
Anyway, this man, Jones - I'm wondering what the Frev Commune thinks of his book. I'm getting a distinct whiff of hostility towards Robespierre from him, over and above the viewpoints of the historical figures he's discussing. I accept that Jones is largely narrating witness accounts of 9 Thermidor so there's naturally going to be a certain anti-Robespierre tone to much of the book, but Jones provides meta-narrative as well and he uses a lot of gay-villain-coded language about Robespierre (he's fussy, he's thin-skinned, he's waspish, he's pedantic, he's vain, he's priggish, he's melodramatic, he's hysterical, etc etc etc). There's also a lot of Ruth Scurr-flavoured condescension, e.g. Robespierre is all talk and no action, he's pompous and self-righteous, he's hopelessly disorganised, he contributes nothing to the CPS, he's a mediocrity with delusions of grandeur, he's a controlling paranoiac and basically deserves what he's getting.
Idek guys, is this book just Thermidorian propaganda? I'm at 16:45 on the fateful day and it's so grim, but the author seems to almost enjoy it.

For the ask game, potentially controversial: Voltaire x Rosseau
Tumblr media
😵‍💫
Spent like an hour thinking where to put them and I still don't know. They're not even actually compelling they just give me a lot of emotions because I hate them. Rip to all the frevolutionaries writing about them cuddling in Heaven or whatever but I'm different.
It's not even enemies to lovers since Rousseau always pretended to be too good to respond to him. It's just one-sided pathetic obsession and not even in a hot way. Being told Candide was a response to him and saying he didn't know because he'd never read it? Devastating. If I were V I'd simply never recover from that (almost quoted Fritz's dad here whoops).

Samsung Galaxy F23 5G’s New Colour and Innovative Features Makes It a Perfect Buy Under Rs. 15,000
Samsung has introduced a new #Frevolutionary colour option for its Galaxy F23 5G smartphone in India. If you had to be stuck in an elevator with a french revolutionary, who would you pick, and why? who would you not pick, and why?
I feel like my most logical answer should be Robespierre, because he is the frevolutionary I talk about the most and being stuck with him would be useful for writing my novel. Also I think he'd be fun to chill with But to be honest I think Camille would be my actual choice. I really do love him, even though I don't post about him nearly as much as Max, and I think we could have a lot of fun together stuck in an elevator.
I definitely wouldn't pick Danton. I mean the dude pisses me off enough the way it is. I certainly wouldn't want to spend any extra time in an enclosed space with him. Plus he was a pretty decently sized guy so I couldn't even beat him in a fight. I wouldn't really want to be in there with SJ either, simply because he would be very boring and stiff or very dramatic and annoying about the entire situation and I do not have enough willpower not punch him.
I'm not the fence about Marat and Augustin because I would love to learn more about both of them and I feel like hanging out with Marat would be a wild time. But also I don't know enough about them to confirm that they would be a good choice.

Top favorite frevolutionaries?)
Aww! Cute question! It's hard to pick some, given that probably we all have our favourites in different categories, but when it comes to simply digging up stuff about the guys, those will be my top ~5.
1. Fabre d'Églantine, personal favourite. Calling him a revolutionary can count as an offence to anyone who ever tried to participate in the revolution, but he is a fascinating person with countless entertaining stories. You simply cannot get bored while reading about him and his adventures.
2. Robespierre brothers, ex aequo. While the elder one needs no elaboration, Bonbon is definitely someone to stand with him on the list for several reasons. Fun loving, dedicated, simply cannot be disliked, and along with Couthon the best proof that robespierrists were not boring prudes. Absolutely love reading about them both and the Mary Young bio gets reread often in this house.
3. Theroigne de Mericourt. This crazy woman is simply worth dying for. Daring, free, strong and beautiful, she is everything you can love in the world. Cannot imagine this list without her, absolutely legendary, absolutely based.
4. Hérault de Séchelles. This gentleman is worth studying. He was simply so cinematographic, both as a touching and fascinating story of a devoted revolutionary and a light romance telenovela. 12/10.
5. ...Collot and Billaud, as one unit. While I can never say they are my favourite revolutionaries, given how much time I spent reading about these guys and looking up sources, I believe they sadly deserve a spot here. At least I can make fun of them.

I follow a bunch of frev accounts and you. And it really is something to have everyone talking about the frevolutionaries on my dash and then you just say something about Sade and that's it. I love it. You're the Sade Guy.
