Faux Fur Sources

I sometimes get asked where I get my faux fur fabrics, so here's a list of sources, and a little about each. They are US based unless otherwise stated, and I have purchased from all of them.

BigZFabric

A great affordable place to get both realistic and solid faux fur. I use a lot of their animal and wolf furs, as well as their half-shag/beaver (1/2") and short shag (1"), but they have lots of cool things. As a company they're great about listening to the needs of their customers and several fur and minky lines are a direct result of community requests.

Howl Fabrics

My favorite place to get solids, which come in matching beaver (1/2"), teddy (1"), shag, and luxury fox. There are sometimes realistic furs in their fox section as well. They also recently started carrying minky. They're a great small company to support!

Mohair Bear Making Supplies

Where I go for realistic faux furs in small quantities, as you can buy anything from 1/16th all the way up to by the yard. You need an account to purchase, but it's super easy to sign up. Based in the UK.

FakeFurShop

A huge selection of faux fur, both solid and realistic, high quality or economical. Based in the Netherlands, so shipping to the US is painful, but worth getting what isn't available in the US. This is my most expensive source, aside from specialty things on Etsy.

Honorable Mentions:

FursuitSupplies: They have some good quality solids. I don't use them too often because they're so popular that the things I want are rarely in stock.

Fur Addiction: Based in Australia, they have some neat high quality stuff sometimes.

Etsy: There's a ton of faux fur and other fabrics available on Etsy, sometimes some really unique stuff. You just have to search for it.

Less Used

Mendel's: sometimes carries different things, but sadly with Shannon Fabrics discontinuing faux fur, their selection has fallen drastically.

Fabric Depot: Some weird niche stuff, but sometimes I get something interesting from there. Some of my old furs are from them before they shut down and then popped back up.

SY Fabrics: Some old stuff on there which is neat, but they keep messing up my orders and their return window is too small to matter. But may still be worth the gamble now and then.

Fabric Empire: lower quality furs, but much of what they have can be found on BigZFabric.

Joann: I have one locally that I've gotten a few things from. It's really hit or miss though.

Fabric.com: this site no longer exists, sadly. I list it only because it's where I got a great number of my furs over the years. It sounds like they may eventually be absorbed into the main Amazon site, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm not a fan of supporting Amazon anyway.

Don't forget to check your local small business fabric shops! As well as second hand stores for faux fur pillows and coats in good condition. Sometimes cheap blankets from discount stores work great as well.

Update! General costuming.

I’ve spent a big blow on EVA foam. Black and white with like 6-8mm thickness in big sheets. I heard of TNT cosplay supply before years and finally i will try their product and see if its worth that 50$ bucks.

No need to buy another fur for Thwok (Yet…). The fur ive gotten doubles as two colors depending on its shave. See it below? I don’t have a pic of the actual shaved test Square but 🤪

I was thinking also that my play-fur quality blanket ive recycled could be used for very fun and whimsical fur! Its white and incredibly whispy n’ floaty.

Along with some fursuitsupplies fur from years ago in white, black and red. ( scraps tho.) and some beautifully soft and shiny teddy-style fur in black i nailed at joanns a long time ago too! (Scraps too.)

I’ve mocked up some monsterous creatures with these colors in mind. (Mostly if i have remaining fur from thwok. ) To make sweet monsters. See below.

I prefer the general shape of “Strudel” monster. The big eye and four ears are quite cute! I also want to possibly in the future, make a creature with mask-vision through nostrils, mouth, etc.

also here's the fursuit design if anyone's curious! i'm wanting to start twitch streaming and ended up super attached to him for some reason so i've been working on live2d rigs for him and want to make a fursuit of him so i can use my webcam on stream. his white is obviously white but i think ivory will work better considering his toes are white lol

If it’s a couple months that’s fine, cos it’s not the first component I’m making, but if it’s oos for ages on end I better start looking for another source. slowly gathering materials to make me a fursuit head of my raptor 'sona, and when looking to get more buckram from that fursuitsupplies site, I see they offer custom (template based) design face masks for like, 17 bucks.

pay another 20$ and you can get a full custom design.

......if I had 40$ right now I'd be extremely tempted to get me a face mask with Cuddle's snoot/mouth on it

Did the shave test for Pele puppet 2.0's fur choices, and yup, going to go with just the Fox and Yeti because the fox shaves down wonderfully (the undercoat is still super thick and very soft even after shaving). By the way, the Fox fur is the Black Luxury Fox Faux Fur from FursuitSupplies , and the Yeti fur is one I picked up from etsy (seller seems to no longer be selling on the site)

Sorry beaver, you just aren't the right type of fur for this project.

My swatch collection is finally complete (for now)!! This represents probably ~$400 of swatches, from the main companies I buy from. It's much easier to flip thru these to find what I need to order rather than browsing 6 catalogs. I'll add more swatches as new furs are released! It also has curbed my desperate desire to buy cool furs since I can touch them and look at them here XD So that helps a LOT. I need to work through all the fur I have right now...imo i have too much! I buy from other companies too but rarely so it's nice to just have all these.
