Remus Lupin x Reader

After complaints from parents about their kiddies not learning anything, Professor Binns was finally (politely) forced into retirement. That meant for the first time in centuries there was an opening for a History of Magic professor. You jumped on the opportunity immediately, never expecting to actually get the job. You were young, relatively inexperienced, but you were a wiz at history of magic, you had always been, even in your time at Hogwarts not too long ago.

That’s why Dumbledore gave you the job. That and he was hoping that having someone young and relatable would inspire the students. And you hoped he was right, all you wanted to do was teach, from the time you were a young child. You sat nervously in your seat at the faculty table and looked around at all the young faces in front of you. You remembered being that young.

“I would like to introduce two new professors this year that we are very lucky to have. Teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts will be Remus Lupin,” There was some scattered applause as a man a few seats down from you stood up, waving slightly. He was a handsome man, definitely older than yourself, but his eyes were even older than that. He had light scars on his face that were illuminated in the candlelight. “And replacing Professor Binns this year will be the lovely Y/N Y/L/N,” You took your turn to stand, there was a wolf whistle from somewhere in the gaggle of students. You flushed slightly and Dumbledore hushed them, “She’s recently been in your shoes, so I hope you will all take her knowledge to heart. Now, enjoy the feast!”

You took your seat again, watching as the plates in front of you filled with delicious foods and your goblet filled itself to the brim with pumpkin juice. Merlin, you had missed Hogwarts.

The first week of classes flew by in a whirl. You felt like you were slightly out of your league and you were beginning to panic. The kids were not much younger than yourself, and you felt like they didn’t quite respect you yet, and you had no idea how to gain it. You didn’t want to hand out detentions, that wasn’t your style. You didn’t want them to hate you or fear you via punishment. You wanted them to like you and to understand you were there to help them.

One day between classes you were wandering the hallway, trying to clear your head when you heard a roar of laughter. You stopped, peaking into the cracked doorway. Professor Lupin was at the head of the class, and the students in front of him were laughing, grinning ear to ear.

“Okay okay!” He raised his hand and the laughter died down, “Next up, remember,” He flicked his wand and spoke, “Riddikulus!” The next student stepped up and Lupin opened the chest at the front of the room, and a Bogart popped out, taking on the form of a giant snake. You watched from the hallway, smiling to yourself.

“Remember, remember the spell! He called and the young girl looked at him worriedly before flourishing her wand and yelling out the spell. The snake morphed and changed and suddenly it was a giant clown, the students roared with laughter again. You remained watching, student after student went. They were learning, they were having fun. It was everything you wanted for your own class. Finally, a student stepped up, Harry Potter, you noticed. When his Bogart turned into a Dementor Lupin lept in front of him, and it changed into a full moon. You frowned. “Riddikulus,” He spoke, and suddenly it was gone, a balloon with the air let out from it. Everyone cackled but you continued to frown. Why would his biggest fear be the moon? “Alright, alright,” He announced, laughing, “That’s enough fun for today, I will see you all next class!” There were groans of protest from kids who didn’t go yet, but they all turned to shuffle out past you.

“Ms. Y/L/N, I didn’t see you there,” Lupin greeted you, gesturing for you to come into the classroom, you stepped forward.

“Sorry to impose, I heard laughter, I had to check it out,” You smiled politely at him, he smiled back.

“I hope we weren’t too loud, Ms. Y/L/N.”

“Absolutely not.” You assured him, “And please, call me Y/N.” He nodded his head, shifting around slightly.

“Of course, Y/N. You’re welcome to call me Remus, if it pleases you.” He was so polite it was almost comical. You took a deep breath getting ready to ask the question on the tip of your tongue, but Remus spoke first.

“How are you finding teaching so far?” He asked and you shrugged slightly, smiling sheepishly.

“Alright, I actually wanted to ask you.. For advice.”

“Me? I’m sure there are much more qualified people to be giving out advice.”

“Maybe, but none of them are new to being a professor. And your students seem to love you so much already. I want to know how you did it. Maybe over a cup of tea? I don’t feel like my students are connecting to me yet.” You explained and he nodded knowingly.

“It’s a hard gig, especially so young.”

“I feel like they think I’m just babysitting them,” You both chuckled.

“How about Friday after lessons? My office, I can give you all the advice I have, even if it isn’t much.” You nodded and smiled.

“Sounds lovely,” You checked the watch on your arm and nodded towards the door, “I have to go, it was good to finally meet you properly, Remus.”

“You as well, Ms.- I mean, Y/N.” You laughed, offering him a small wave before turning to leave the classroom, looking forward to Friday.

Friday rolled around faster than you thought it would, and you were grateful. You felt like your students were warming up to you, but there was still a disconnect. You walked to Remus’s office and knocked. A moment later the door opened and the man stood in front of you smiling softly.

“Hello, Y/N.”

“Hello Remus, how was your week?” You asked, stepping into the office. It was nicely decorated, and the bookshelves were brimming with literature, so much so that there were several boxes around the room with even more books in them still.

“Sorry for the mess,” you waved him off.

“It’s lovely, have you read all of these?” You asked curiously as you followed the man to his desk, sitting in one of the plush seats on the opposite side while he settled behind it.

“Most of them yes, there are some I haven’t gotten around to yet,” He admitted. You smiled, watching him conjure a teapot and two mugs over. He poured you each a glass. “How do you take your tea?” He asked, and you smiled sitting back in the comfortable chair.

“Just some sugar please,” He added a few cubes of sugar before setting the mug in front of you. “Did you go to Hogwarts?”

“A few lifetimes ago, yes,” He chuckled, taking a sip of his own drink, you stirred yours with your spoon waiting for the sugar to dissolve.

“Oh come on, hardly.” You laughed, “Is it as odd for you as it is for me? To be here and not be a student?” Remus nodded his head.

“Yes, it’s odd. Being here, being in charge, not being...” He paused, and eyed you slightly, “Not being a troublemaker.” That made you laugh harder.

“You were a troublemaker?” You pressed and he shrugged before nodding, his eyes glistening slightly.

“A bit, well my mates were, but they dragged me into everything,”

“Brilliant,” You snickered.

“What about you? All I’ve heard from other professors is how brilliant you were.” You flushed slightly, glancing away.

“I’m not that brilliant, I only ever really excelled in history of magic. And that wasn’t hard considering most kids didn’t even want to be there. But I love it, I love to read. And I would love for my students to find it even half as interesting as I do.”

“So make it more interesting,” He prompted, and you sighed,

“It’s not like defense, I can’t very well let a Bogart loose in the classroom,” You teased and it was his turn to flush slightly.

“I’m sure you could think of something more appropriate to the subject, you seem rather resourceful.” You sipped on your tea and hid your smile behind the mug.

“I will try,” You assured, “I think it’s hard for them to respect me, they look at me and they see their siblings, or older kids they attended school with. They don’t think of me as a professor.” Remus put his mug down and looked at your thoughtfully.

“I’m sure they respect you more than you give them credit for.” You shrugged, “Dumbledore would not have given you this position if he didn’t think you were more than qualified, just remember that.” You smiled and nodded your head.

“Thank you, I think I needed to hear that,”

“Of course,” You made small talk as you drank your tea, and you eventually put the empty mug down with a content sigh.

“You know, we should start a book club.” The man across from you chuckled, raising an eyebrow.

“A book club?”

“That was my polite way of asking to raid your little library you have yourself here,” You grinned and he chuckled again waving a hand towards the shelves.

“By all means, anytime you’d like you’re welcome to borrow. Or else they just collect more dust.” That was all the invitation you needed, Remus watched amused as you excitedly got out of your seat, going to the closest bookshelf, running your finger over the spines. You stopped randomly on one and pulled it off the shelf, looking at the title.

“One of my favorites,” Remus informed you, leaning back in his own chair as he watched you. “I highly recommend it.” You opened the book and read over the inside cover, smiling to yourself. Remus thought you had a wonderful smile, but he shook the thought from his head. You were way too young, too pretty for him. Besides, he had way too much baggage to be dating.

“I’ll take it then,” You decided, coming back to his desk, “Want to meet next friday for tea and we can talk about it?” You offered, unsure if you were overstepping.

“That sounds lovely,” You smiled and nodded your head, brushing your hair over your shoulder.

“Brilliant, I will see you around then, Remus.”

“Have a good day, Y/N,” With that you left his office, going back to your own to start on a new lesson plan. Something fun.

This week went by better, things were getting easier. The students were engaged, and seemed to be enjoying your class more and more by the day, something you were elated about. They were asking questions, participating, and doing their assignments as instructed. In your free time you read the book you had borrowed from Remus, and he was right, it was a wonderful book. Written by a muggle about magic, and it was fun and interesting to see how they believed your world would be. Somethings were almost accurate but most of it was.. What was the word? Fantasy.

Friday arrived again, and at the end of classes you made your way to Remus’s office, excited to see the man and to talk about the book. When you got there, Professor Snape was leaving and you nodded politely at the man. You never cared for him while you were a student, and now that you were a teacher your feelings hadn’t changed much.

“Y/L/N.” He greeted in a draw before brushing past you, leaving the door ajar. You knocked on the doorframe, popping your head in.

“Remus?” You called, and he looked up from where he had been rubbing his face with his hands.

“Hello, Y/N, come on in,” You entered the office, shutting the door behind you.

“Cheating on me with Snape?” You teased and he flushed.

“W-What?”

“I’m just joking,” You assured, coming to sit in the lovely plush armchair. You would need to get yourself one of these.

“Oh no, I know, I am sorry. He just stopped in to ask a question.” You nodded your head, tucking you feet up under your legs as you sat.

“I don’t think he likes me,” You admitted, “Not even when I was a student,”

“He doesn’t like anyone,” Remus assured you chuckling, “Not even when we were students.” He gestured with his wand and the teapot came over to his desk landing between the two of you were two mugs already sat.

“You went to school with him?” You asked, surprised.

“Yes, I unfortunately did.” You snickered at that, watching Remus pour you each a cup of tea, before placing sugar in yours and handing it over. You thanked him and took it, holding it in your hands, letting it warm you up.

“How was that?”

“He was mostly the same, we, he and my friends, never got on.” He admitted, “But don’t let my petty squabbles influence you.” You smirked, taking a sip of tea.

“Don’t worry, they don’t. I’ve never been fond of the man.” Remus smirked in return, nodding his head.

“How did you like A Wizard of Earthsea?” He asked, and you produced the book from your robes, setting it on his desk.

“Oh I loved it,” You gushed, and he smiled. He wouldn’t tell you, but he truly enjoyed having someone around who enjoyed literature the way he did. You talked yourself through three mugs of tea about the book, conversation flowing nicely. When it got dark you finally checked your watch.

“Dinner is soon, we should go to the hall,” He checked his own watch, disappointed that your time together was over.

“Pick another book before we go, if you’d like.”

“I’d love to,” You grinned, taking the previous book and returning it to it’s spot on his shelf. You looked around before settling on another one, holding it up to him. “Good?”

“Ah, you’ve got brilliant taste,” He grinned and you returned the sentiment. Months passed like that, fall turned to winter, but the tea and talking about books with Remus every friday remained a constant in your life. You loved having something to look forward to every week, and it was nice to have a friend.

You were on your way to your weekly meeting when you were intercepted by Severous Snape a few corridors away from his office.

“Ms. Y/L/N.” He greeted and you smiled meekly at the man.

“Hello, Mr. Snape?” You greeted, unsure what you were supposed to call him. His face darkened slightly, you guessed that was wrong.

“May I offer you some advice,” It wasn’t a question, you nodded, shifting from foot to foot. “I wouldn’t go around spending all your time with Remus Lupin, not if you like your job.” You blinked a few times.

“Excuse me, sir?”

“There are many things you don’t know about that man, dangerous things.” He continued ominously. You scoffed, that cardigan wearing man? Dangerous? “You’re a bright girl, I’m sure you’ve worked out his... furry little problem.” You frowned. You hadn’t.

“I don’t think it’s your business to be sharing his business, do you sir?” Snape glared down at you, and you did your best to hold his gaze.

“Just execute... caution.” He finished and with a flourish he was gone down the corridor and you were left alone with your thoughts. You went directly to Remus’s office, not knocking before you entered, face still screwed up in a glare.

“Y/N,” He greeted, “What’s wrong?” His face fell slightly. You shrugged, coming to sit in your chair across from him.

“Just ran into Snape in the hall,” You admitted. Remus didn’t say anything, but you could see he was nervous, “He told me to be careful around you, that you were dangerous.”

“Y/N..”

“Said you had a furry little problem.” You continued, glancing up at the man, who was pale as a ghost.

“D-did he?”

“Your Bogart...” The pieces were all there, right in front of you, “You’re always ill, once a month...”

“Y/N...” He stood up, eyes widening, “Please,”

“You’re a werewolf?” You whispered, meeting his eyes, and he immediately looked away from you. The question hung in the air for an uncomfortable amount of time. You took your wand out, Remus still refusing to look at you, and you conjured the teapot over, pouring yourselves each a mug. “How do you take your tea?”

“What?” He spun around, like he was surprised you were even still there.

“Tea, Remus, how do you take it?” You placed a few sugar cubes in your own mug then looked at him expectantly.

“Oh, uhm, milk, no sugar.” You nodded, pouring a bit of milk into his mug before pushing it towards his chair.

“I can’t believe I’ve never read this before,” You continued, placing the book on his desk and Remus slowly returned to his seat, hesitantly taking the mug. “Lord of the Rings, you said there were more of them?” You prodded, and he took a small sip of his tea.

“Several,”

“Brilliant,” You smiled, tucking your feet up under your legs in your usual position.

“Listen, Y/N...”

“Remus,” You spoke firmly, “It’s alright,” He waved his hand.

“No no, it’s not alright, Snape is right... I am dangerous.” You looked him up and down before smirking.

“I think I could take you in a duel,” He frowned at you.

“I’m being serious,”

“You’re not dangerous Remus,” You argued.

“I am, and ... and you shouldn’t be around me,”

“Too bad.” You shrugged, stirring your tea and taking a sip, “I rather like being around you.” He flushed, running a hand through his hair.

“Snape is-”

“A git, I agree,” You took another sip, eyeing the man over your mug, daring him to argue with you, he chuckled.

“Well yes, but he has a point.”

“He’s an arse, Remus, a fear mongering arse, He had no right to tell me that,” Remus shrugged his shoulders. He didn’t feel like he deserved this- you being so blase about this all. You should be running from him, screaming to everyone who would listen that he was a monster. But here you were, drinking tea with him, and discussing books.

One the last day of school you went to your dear friend’s office, having heard the rumors by now. You knocked on the door before letting yourself in. The bookshelves were empty, and nothing but one last box sat on his desk. You frowned.

“So it’s true,”

“Parents don’t exactly want their kids being taught by a monster, Y/N.” You frowned deeper.

“You’re not a monster, Remus, you’re a good man with a rotten condition.” He laughed bitterly. “You’re a good man Remus.” You repeated.

“Whatever you say, arguing with you is pointless,” He teased slightly and you smirked coming to him, putting your hands on the back of the armchair you had grown to love.

“It’s yours.”

“Sorry?”

“The chair,” You looked down, surprised. “Put it in your office, these are yours too,” He gestured to the box of books on his desk, “I think you’ll like them.” You gazed into the box before coming around the desk to throw your arms around the man in a hug.

“Promise me you’ll see me over the summer,”

“Y/N...”

“No excuses, take me out for tea, invite me over, talk to me about these lovely books of yours. We already agreed there is no point in arguing with me.” You chidded him. He hugged you back for a moment, letting himself breath you in before he pulled back.

“I will,” He assured you, and you nodded.

“Thank you Remus, for everything.”

“No thank you,” You smiled up at him before leaning up on your tippy toes to place a kiss on the man’s cheek.

“I expect an owl as soon as you’re home safely,”

“Yes ma’am,” You both chuckled, “and I will see you Friday, alright?”

“Alright.”

“Promise me,” You demanded and he held out a pinky finger, which you took with your own.

“Promise.”

Thank you! I have considered it. Short answer, no, sorry. I won't be selling patterns for the foreseeable future.

Ok story time.

Last year I prepped a pattern for someone for use in a PhD research project. I learned very quickly that pattern prepping for someone else is a very different skill than designing that pattern and making the plush.

My patterns are loose pieces of tape and paper with scribbled labels. In order to prep them I have to digitize them (difficult for pieces that are larger than printer paper), label them clearly, and then create comprehensive instructions.

The one pattern I prepped, one of my simplest, took me about six months to prep. That was mostly because, well, I hated the entire process. It's slow. It's boring. It's just not my cup of tea. (It probably would have taken me a month if I'd enjoyed it, even so. It's very time-consuming.)

What's more, pattern sellers need to be available for troubleshooting and answering questions, and I don't really have the bandwidth for that. Or time for the array of other issues that pattern sellers have to contend with on a near-constant basis.

Even if I did sell patterns, it wouldn't be for every pattern I design. My plush are more than plush to me--they're my art, my soul, and I'm not really keen on my exact design choices being recreated. So while I am utterly delighted to inspire and share my process, there are some things I'd like to keep within my own artistic voice.

My hat off to all the plush artists who sell patterns. They are true heroes.

It certainly didn’t stop Elain from inviting her, but Feyre on the other hand? She expressed no interest in Nesta’s sudden absence. In fact, Nesta imagined her sister breathing a sigh of relief every time she told her she wouldn’t be coming.

Something ugly planted itself within her after the events that transpired just two weeks ago. It churned in the pit of her stomach. It was as if her insides were being twisted inside out. And she couldn’t seem to place the emotion. Anger? Guilt? Embarrassment? All the above?

Either way, she was too busy to think much about it. With finals and her new job, Nesta’s schedule was jam packed every week. She wasn’t complaining. She savored it. She was never left alone with her thoughts. There was always something to do and since all the work exhausted her, she no longer had trouble falling asleep.

After applying to Rita’s, she heard back from them a week later.

Nesta,

Thank you for your application. It’s always exciting to hire a new employee, and I was especially ecstatic when I discovered you were Feyre’s sister. That little rag-tag group stole my heart.

After reading through your resume, I would love for you to be part of our little team here at Rita’s. I’m not one for interviews (they’re pretty pointless if you ask me), so just let me know when you’re able to start. My family and I are on vacation until the 29th. I’m looking forward to meeting you.

And with that, Nesta was no longer unemployed.

She started just a couple days following Thanksgiving. Rita had closed down the bar for the holiday, she and her wife leaving town for an annual vacation. According to Feyre, Rita only took off two weeks in the year. And since her family didn’t celebrate Christmas, those two weeks were reserved for Thanksgiving.

Nesta barely slept the night before her first day. She hated new places, new people. New jobs. It was all just… a lot to take in. But she showed up the next day, her anxiety hidden behind a confident stride and a professional attitude.

Right off the bat, Nesta noticed the welcoming atmosphere of the bar. It was a bit rustic, the wooden tables and chairs worn. The vintage bulbs that hung from the ceiling provided warm, dim lighting. The high chairs that sat in front of the bar counter were cushioned with plush, deep red fabric. Nesta looked around the walls to admire the art. She noticed upon closer glance that they all had names of local artists next to their respective work. The small space was elegant, inviting, homey.

Rita didn’t hesitate as she walked up to Nesta and gave her a hug. She stiffened, unaccustomed to physical touch of any kind – much less from a stranger. Rita seemed to read the room and retracted her arms with an apologetic smile.

“Forgive my wife,” a voice said from behind Rita. Nesta looked up to see a blonde woman smiling. Not at her, but at Rita. “She doesn’t have any sense of personal space.”

Nesta watched, amused as Rita stuck her tongue out at her wife. Turning back to Nesta, she waved her hand. “Forgive her. She’s just jealous.”

That seemed to be a good enough icebreaker as any. After being introduced, Rita led Nesta behind the bar. The next hour was spent training. Rita told her how she began her business, the bar’s signature drinks, and the other employees who worked there. Apparently, there were only four bartenders excluding herself: Emerie, Helion, Viviane, and Thesan. It had been an hour before open when Nesta had arrived and by the time the clock hit five, Nesta was pretty confident in her drink-making skills. But that wasn’t what she was worried about; it was more the whole “costumer service" thing. To say the least, Nesta lacked people skills. She had no problem calling people out on their shit, and she was going to have to learn how to keep her mouth shut in front of customers. Gods only knew how angry Rita would be.

That anxiety dissipated when one of the workers, Emerie, clocked in. She strode in confidently, her gaze unwavering as she approached Nesta.

“Three things you need to know. First thing, don’t ask me to cover your shift unless you’re dying or you win two tickets to a Beyonce concert, in which case I’m coming. Second of all, wear a lower cut shirt next time. Men are disgusting and won’t spare a look at you unless you flash a little cleavage.”

Nesta crossed her arms. “And the third?”

Emerie pointed to a board behind them, one that Nesta hadn’t noticed when she walked in. “We have a competition going on to see who earns the most tips. Lucky for you, we just started last week. The winner gets full control of the music for a month and as many rounds of drinks they can handle paid in full by the losers. So,” Emerie appraised her, “don’t fall behind.”

Nesta inwardly laughed at the woman’s attempt to intimidate her, especially considering she was a good foot shorter than her. Little did Emerie know, Nesta was competitive as fuck and she would do anything to win. Especially if there was alcohol involved. She smirked. “I don’t think that will be a problem.”

Emerie blinked at her in surprise. Nesta just held her stare.

Then, Emerie’s lips broke into a smile. “Oh, I’m going to like you.”

Since their first meeting, Nesta and Tomas had studied together about once a week. If Nesta was being honest, she would have completely forgotten about finals if Tomas hadn’t offered to help her study. Her mind was preoccupied with all the other shit going on in her life, and the only reason Nesta hadn’t yet failed that class was thanks to Tomas. She was baffled at his reputation as an asshole T.A.; he’d been nothing but resourceful to her since the beginning of the semester.

At least the job at Rita’s was going well. She liked all her coworkers for the most part. Helion was loud. Viviane was sassy. Thesan kept to himself. Emerie was her favorite. Nesta learned that she had been working there since its beginnings. Apparently, Rita and her wife took her in when she was young, and they’d been like family ever since. Nesta and her couldn’t be more similar. They would complain about customers before they even turned their back. Both of them were no-nonsense women who didn't tolerate bullshit. They were both suckers for romance novels and had a large distaste for country music. And most importantly, they bonded over their hatred for the same people.

It made for the perfect friendship.

But her job was only taking away time that she needed to utilize for academia. Despite Nesta’s efforts to study for the gods-damn exam, she wasn’t prepared in the slightest. During their sessions, she could barely focus. Tomas’s words went in one ear and out the other. When he gave her extra work, she rarely did it. Her mind was scattered; it was as if she was sleepwalking through her days. Wake up, go to class, work, study, sleep. Rinse and repeat. Nesta was exhausted.

So, with the exam just three days away, Nesta didn’t have any other options. She couldn’t fail this course and jeopardize her education.

Her plan was simple. T.A.’s had access to exam answers. Tomas was a T.A. All she needed to do was get those answers from him in one way or another.

The idea had been swirling around in her head for the past week, but she’d always shoved it to the background when it surfaced. After all, it was her last resort. Nesta didn’t cheat. In fact, she despised when people took credit for doing jackshit. It was hypocritical, and yet...

I can’t fail. Not again.

It wasn’t like it would be hard either. She didn’t have to do much to get Tomas’s attention. That first day she'd introduced herself after class, it was impossible to miss the way his eyes flicked down to her chest every few minutes. Add to that a lip bite and a suggestive glance, and those answers would be hers.

What could she say? Men were simple like that.

It was Tuesday, Nesta and Tomas's last study session before the exam.

As Nesta sat at the table eating dinner, which consisted of a cup of coffee and a granola bar, her phone vibrated beside her. Picking it up, she saw Tomas’s name flash across the screen as she received his text.

Hey – my roommate had to borrow my car so I can’t meet you at the library. How about we study at my place?

Nesta smirked. Gods, he made it so easy.

What’s your address?

Nesta retreated to her room and opened her closet. Glancing at the time, she hurried as she grabbed the most provocative outfit she could find. She threw on a lacy, long-sleeve bodysuit that molded to her every curve. Stepping into a skirt, Nesta had to shimmy her hips to pull the tight fabric up, covering only a couple inches of her upper thigh. With a couple flicks of her wrist, she adjusted her makeup and fluffed her hair.

Nesta spared a glance at the mirror. She grinned.

There was no way she would be leaving his place without those answers tonight.

Nesta shoved on a pair of booties and gathered her things. She quickly shut the bedroom door behind her.

“Ooooh!” Elain peered over the couch as Nesta beelined for the front door, her heels clicking loudly on the hardwood floor. “Special occasion?”

Nesta didn't respond.

But Elain didn’t take to being ignored.

Nesta watched as she pulled herself off the couch and faced her with a sly grin. “Hot date?”

Nesta rolled her eyes. “I’m going to Tomas’s to study for my exam.”

Elain nodded her head, shooting a look at her that said, Sure, you are.

Nesta ignored her again, not slowing down.

“Should I expect you to return tonight?”

“Mind your business, Elain. I’ll be back in a couple hours.”

“Be safe!” Elain called as Nesta hurriedly walked out of the apartment.

When Nesta pulled into his gravel driveway, there weren’t any lights on, save for one on the first floor. She noticed his parked car.

Weird.

Nesta didn’t bother questioning it, though. Her stomach was already a bundle of nerves. Fidgeting in the skintight skirt, she tugged it down an inch so the neighbors wouldn’t look out the window and catch a free showing.

Gods, what am I doing?

Every step she took closer to Tomas's house, the further her heart sunk. It's not like she wanted to do this. But Nesta didn't have any other options. She was stuck between a rock and a hard place, and she was the one who put herself in that situation to begin with. So it was going to be her who got herself out of it.

You're going to hate yourself if you do this, a voice warned inside her head.

She shoved away the thought.

Even though her heart raced as she approached the front door, her strut was strong and confident. She didn’t falter for a step.

Nesta released a shaky breath and composed herself. She knocked once and the door was already opening.

“Nesta,” Tomas greeted her, eyes roaming over her body. He wore a polo shirt and sweatpants. She wasn’t sure if she shivered from the numbing winter air or his raunchy gaze. Nesta stifled the urge to zip her jacket all the way to her neck. “I’m glad you made it.”

Nesta pushed past the desire to say fuck it. To just go back home and accept the fact that she was going to fail. Instead, she plastered on a charming smile and giggled softly. “Thank you for inviting me.”

He led her inside. As she followed him, she caught a whiff of something strong. Vodka? Rum? She wasn't sure. But it was coming from Tomas.

Why the fuck did he drink when we're about to study?

They walked past the kitchen table. Nesta faltered.

“Aren’t we going to study here?”

Tomas looked over his shoulder with an easy smile. “I figured we could do it in my bedroom. It’ll be more comfortable anyway.”

He didn’t give her a chance to respond as he kept walking. Nesta followed him reluctantly. She wanted to seduce him, sure, but there was no way in hell she was going to fuck him for the answers. She wasn't going to go that far.

“Welcome to the man cave.” He gestured to his room.

Nesta rolled her eyes inwardly. Man cave? Really? Gods, men are insufferable.

When she took a step in, she was assaulted by the overwhelming scent of men’s cologne. She stifled the urge to cough. His room was cramped; there was barely any space to walk. The comforter was brown, along with his pillows and walls.

Nesta hated brown.

The one thing she noticed was none of Tomas’s textbooks were out. In fact, his backpack was shoved in the corner.

“So where -"

Nesta was cut off when she felt Tomas directly behind her.

She spun around to face him. That's when she noticed his eyes. They were red-rimmed and glossy.

He hadn't just had one drink. He was drunk.

“Damn, girl," Tomas leered, taking a step closer to her. Nesta took a step back, trying to keep distance between them. "I thought it was going to take a little more effort than this to get you into my bed, but then you showed up dressed like that."

What the fuck?

“I think there was a misunderstanding –"

“Oh, trust me, I don’t think that’s the case.” Then Tomas's arm was around her waist, pulling her flush against him. Nesta tried to back away, but he only held her closer. His grip was tight. Too tight to shove him off.

“Tomas, no – “

“Aw, you don’t mean that, baby. I see the way you look at me.” His mouth pressed against her ear, his hot breath enough to make Nesta gag. “You’ve wanted this for a long, long time. Just as long as I have."

Nesta scanned his room frantically. There were no windows. His bedroom door was closed. And locked.

That’s when she started to panic.

"Can we just talk for a minute?" She willed her voice not to shake. Maybe if she remained calm, tried to reason with him -

Nesta cried out in pain as Tomas pushed her onto the bed. Hard.

"Please, stop!"

Tomas paid no mind to her pleas as he straddled her waist before she had the chance to get up. Nesta could only look at him with wide eyes as he loomed over her. Fear crawled its way up her throat at the look he was giving her. He placed a damp hand on her hip, his nails digging into her skin. He slid his hand further up, past her stomach until -

No, no, no nononono.

Tomas palmed her breast over her shirt, squeezing so hard that tears spilled over Nesta's cheeks. She tried to kick her legs but he was so heavy, too heavy. His weight was suffocating, her breathing was rapid and her heart was pounding and she squeezed her eyes shut and tried to think; what should she do, what should she do, what should she do -

His lips slammed down on hers. Her cry was silenced. Tomas tried to shove his tongue into her mouth, but Nesta kept her lips closed as she squirmed underneath him and kicked her legs. But he remained on top of her. He wasn't budging.

"Open your fucking mouth," he growled against her lips. Nesta sobbed as she kept fighting to get him off her. He kept moving his mouth against hers, forcefully trying to open her mouth until Nesta bit down on his lip as hard as she possibly could.

Tomas reeled back with a hiss and touched his lip with a hand. When he withdrew it, blood shone on his finger. He glared at her. "You bitch."

Nesta didn't see his palm coming until she felt the sharp slap on her cheek, her head snapping to the side from the sheer force. The wind was knocked out of her. She felt paralyzed, helpless.

Nesta was motionless under him as his mouth dragged along her bared neck. He sucked on her skin hard even to bruise. Another sob escaped her clenched teeth. Her fists were balled tightly, a scream trapped in her. Bile rose in her throat when Tomas rubbed himself against her. She felt his erection press hard against her stomach, and she nearly threw up right there. His hands fell to the fabric of her skirt as he began to hike it up to her hips.

Something within her snapped.

Nesta didn't know what happened next. All she knew was her fist was burning with pain and she was shoving Tomas off her, sprinting for the door, racing through the house. Adrenaline was pumping through her veins as she heard Tomas yell her name behind her but she was too fast. He was too far behind.

She didn't stop running until she fell into the driver's seat of her car. She didn't bother buckling her seat belt as she peeled out of his driveway.

Sometime along the way home, Nesta stopped shaking. Her tears dried. Her heart stopped pounding. Her thoughts disappeared until she was left only with a silent mind and an empty feeling.

Nesta stared at the road in front of her, and she happily invited the feeling of numbness as it flooded into her body.

INSIGHT :

To the casual observer, Mathieu is easy to know. Overbearing sometimes to the point of being tyrannical, he is not one to cross and one that most wouldn’t dare to challenge. And to some degree, this is true. Mathieu likes what he likes and as long as others can understand and accept that, he can be agreeable. As long as everything goes in his favor, he can even be, on rare occasions, amiable. Over the years that he’s invested not just in Le Théâtre personally but in the other theatres that populate Paris, he has come to command respect and have his opinions demanded to be heard. Having no need for theatrics or exaggeration (though he does love both equally) to warrant others’ attentions, Mathieu doesn’t need a headpiece to be heard. Instead, people will listen to him just by the quiet understanding that he is the boss, that he is the one in charge, and that what he says goes.

Through this way, though Mathieu can characteristically be a quieter individual, it is a strength on its own. When he speaks, it’s because he has something to say. As director of the theatre, he has no time for frivolity - especially with those who aren’t his favorites, those lacking in work ethic, or others he deems too weak either by their economic privileges and pampering or by their simple inability to handle his demands. That having been said, Mathieu has also been known to have a temper when things don’t go his way. And in this way, being quieter doesn’t make him a doormat and silence his opinions. Goodness knows he’s got plenty of those and he is all too happy to share them with others whether them want them or not, whether they work for him or not.

And so this is what Mathieu is known for - going to work, reigning others with his absolutist ways, and then slipping to the bars to drink himself unconscious. And why wouldn’t people think of him that way? After all, Mathieu has worked hard to ensure that people know nothing else of him or would believe anything different.

In actuality, how Mathieu portrays himself is just the tip of the iceberg for what lies beneath. A man of secrets, Mathieu is a hoarder of not just others’ secrets but his own. Though he profits off of learning the valuable secrets of others, it is his own that he guards most preciously. As it is, his acts of “inebriation” are just that - acts; a talent that he’s long fostered through his many years in the theatre industry. In fact, this is one reason that the Chaneys value him as his private, disingenuous ways appealed to Annabella from the start. Not often privy to being brash and unnecessarily chatty, the Chaneys know that he can be trusted to obtain and hold their secrets.

HEADCANONS :

At his core, Mathieu is a theatre kid through and through. Despite his father’s frequent protestations growing up, Mathieu would often ignore the other neighborhood children and instead opt to sit indoors and listen to his mother’s opera records on repeat. Similarly, athletic team try-outs were neglected in favor of auditions for the school and community theatre plays. And at fourteen, Mathieu’s young dreams came to fruition as he accepted his first job as an usher at Le Théâtre de nuit, using it as a chance to ingratiate himself with the directors and actors as well as see all the productions for free. The fact that Mathieu is now the company director of the Théâtre is a surprise to none and came from years of him knowing with absolute clarity that his place is and always will be with the theatre.

Just after Mathieu had started to climb the ranks at Le Théâtre, he was devastated when it closed in 2002. Not wanting to give up in the industry, however, Mathieu came armed with his experience gained at Le Théâtre to other Parisian and French theatres. In those 14 years of Le Théâtre’s closure, Mathieu became incredibly well known in the industry and sought after. For this reason, he was eagerly welcomed back with open arms as Le Théâtre’s company director once it re-opened.

There are a plethora of secrets to uncover at the Théâtre, not only those revealed by the cast and crew but also those of its patrons. As a quieter and oftentimes introspective individual, Mathieu picked up on the art of eavesdropping and exchanging said secrets for cash in his pubescent days as an usher. Being one of the theatre’s youngest employees, he was believed to be innocuous; their beliefs were a mistake that opened doors for Mathieu. And that ultimately gained him an opportunity into the Chaney organization. Though his methods of extracting secrets have altered and matured with age, Mathieu is still one not to be crossed as he can usually always be expected to be privy to valuable information and have a trick or two up his sleeve.

In retrospect, though it worked out for the best for Mathieu, his initial introductions to the Chaneys could’ve ended in his demise. After all, Lisette was a company member of the Théâtre. And with the recent police notes of the missing woman linking Lisette to the casino as a footnote (a fact that he picked up from another one of his “inebriated” chats with a cop), Mathieu took it as his own personal duty to uncover more information. It didn’t take much for him to fake drunkenness as his per usual and gather enough intel to hazard a bet as to why Lisette might have been frequenting the casino recently. Armed with this knowledge and deciding whether the police or press would be most profitable, Mathieu was stalled by Annabella’s men. Though he was pressed and, for a short while, thought that his days on earth might be dwindling, Annabella was ultimately impressed by his resourcefulness, gall, and the opportunities he could afford to the Chaneys - he could be one of their emissaries, especially as it concerned the theatre, but also could help gather valuable intel.

If pressed for honesty, Mathieu would stubbornly insist that the theatre was the love of his life. However, buried beneath his insolence is Mathieu’s vulnerability and embarrassment at being forty and having no true understanding of himself in regards to romance. Though he is pansexual homoromantic, this is a fact that Mathieu has yet to comprehend. Aware that he will sleep with any individual for the right price and pleasure, it is the “romance” aspect of his life that Mathieu continues to have issues grasping.

QUESTION ONE :

What was your childhood like?

The question itself was simplistic. Though it was a common foundation for small talk and a barefaced attempt to form a tenuous connection, it seemed to be a markedly inappropriate and probing first query to Mathieu. Running his tongue along the inside of his upper teeth, he looked heavenward, praying to a god he didn’t believe in for patience he knew that he’d never possess. As he did so, he let his breath out in a sharp, short burst of a laugh, punctuating the sound with an amused snort as he shoved an unlit cigarette into his mouth. “Sure you want to start with that one?” he murmured, his enunciation dampened by the click of his lighter. “Or would you rather want to know which religion I subscribe to? Hm, politics, maybe? Whether I think Trump is a good leader for the colonials or if I supported Brexit?”

Through a deep drag of his cigarette, Mathieu reveled in the heavy, uncomfortable silence that lingered. If these were the questions to start, he had some questions of his own that demanded answers. Not bothering to turn his face, he pushed the smoke through his nose, his cold, blue eyes staring straight ahead. “Next question.”

QUESTION TWO :

Where is your favorite place in Paris?

There were plush, cherry seats in rows, as far as the eye could see, capable of seating hundreds. In a canopy above them, gold-plated balustrades were supported by colossal columns covered in elaborate filigree. Secured to the ceiling hung a brilliant chandelier, the lights surrounding it thrown off from its crystals in kaleidoscopic festivity. The best of it all, red velvet curtains parted on a black, inky stage. And to make it a home, the people that filled it; not just the cast and crew but the audience, the patrons, that made all of his stress, aggravation, and hard work worth it.

All of this Mathieu imagined, the answer coming to him well before he spoke it aloud. A soft smile playing at his lips, he cleared his throat abruptly, an attempt at a casual dismissal to try to bely his obvious sentimentality. “Le Théâtre,” he mused quietly, the light on his cigarette burning low, temporarily forgotten. “I suppose it’s always been.”

QUESTION THREE :

What would you say is your purpose in life? If not something permanent or long-lasting, what is it at the moment?

The butt of Mathieu’s cigarette glowed incandescent as he ground it flat beneath the heel of his shoe. It was times like these that he embraced being a chain smoker as he fished inside his coat for another smoke only to be met by disappointment. Long, pale fingers rifled through the empty cigarette box and Mathieu paused, sighing heavily as he braced himself. Moments passed in contemplation before he trailed his fingers through his hair, resigning himself to the question.

“Mother always said to tackle the dread,” he stated curtly. “To take on our greatest challenges with a brave face. And I suppose that’s what I’m doing, isn’t it?” As always, Mathieu was a dealer in secrets and there was always a question for a question. “I enjoy what I do and I suppose that’s more than I can say for most. But there’s always going to be obstacles, always going to be people to try to stand in my way and keep me down. And my purpose is to make sure that I accomplish all that I’ve in mind. With the theatre, the Chaneys, and everything else. ‘Cause if I don’t fight for what I want, then nothing will ever happen. If I’m not my biggest advocate, who will be?”

EVERYTHING ELSE :

As Mathieu raised the baton and held it, Carlotta’s voice rang true and clear across the stage, rising effortlessly over the exhausted, tremulous notes of the choir. As always, she was the only one in this scene to hold her end, to deliver her side of the promise without fault or deterioration despite working through lunch, despite the fifth run-through in a row, despite everyone else’s lack of perfection. He sighed, forcing his breath through clenched teeth, suspending the baton unwaveringly as he considered the entirety of the scene, the totality of the disaster in front of him.

There were faults to be acknowledged everywhere, his steel blue eyes leaving nothing unnoticed. The throaty gasp of Piangi’s understudy, the trip of a dancer downstage, the stitches of Carlotta’s seams fraying at the edges of her sleeves, and the not-so-subtle whispers and chewing of stagehands in the rafters. And behind it all, in the very back of the stage, where Mathieu had expressly told them not to cross during rehearsals, was Acel. Though they were carrying the documents he’d told them to bring him, they were clumsy and out of place, a sore thumb in the midst of his rehearsals. Mathieu snapped.

Dropping his baton abruptly, the choir shorted and wheezed in blessed relief at the same time his voice pealed out, sharp and succinct. “Stop, ladies and gentlemen!” he shouted, a simple request that everyone was eager to follow. “Everybody stop and look what Acel is doing! See what he’s doing, in the middle of a scene?” He paused for emphasis, made sure all eyes were on him. “Don’t fucking do that, he is an idiot!”

Though he meant it in all seriousness, he allowed everyone to laugh; there was nothing quite like humiliation to drive a point home. Casting his gaze toward Acel’s, he locked eyes with them, let the anger between them drive an electric thrill down his spine. Once Acel deviated off stage, Mathieu allowed himself a moment to collect himself before readdressing his stage. “Once more, from the top!”

HOW-TO GUIDE: DEPRESSION CARE PACKAGE WISHLIST

If you have depression, you should have one of these. I’m serious. If you don’t already have one, log into Amazon and start one now. This post will help you build one.

What it is: An Amazon wishlist of self care items

How to use it: Share it with people who care about you

That’s it!

Example: Here is a self care wishlist I made last summer. You should see that it’s sorted by “priority.” I’m not really using those categories as intended—instead, I used them to sort the list into a few different themes.

Category one: Hygiene and Making-Life-Simpler

This is stuff that helps make the day-to-day easier. What could make your life better? Maybe it’s bag clips so your chips stop going stale. Maybe it’s a new garbage can so all of your junk mail can go straight in the trash without stressing you out. Here are some things that help me:

Dry shampoo: If you have depression and have never tried dry shampoo, I super recommend it. Ten seconds of effort for less greasy hair is a lifesaver.

Febreze, Face wipes, deodorant: THEY WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER.

Paper plates (these ones are cute and space themed, because I like space): Even when you’re too depressed to do the dishes, you still need to eat. I get a lot of anxiety about dirty dishes, so having paper plates around on bad days makes a world of difference in how willing I am to actually have a meal

Laundry pods: I usually just use liquid detergent, but the perceived easiness of laundry pods (even though it is, like, thirty seconds of difference) makes me that much more likely to do laundry.

Category two: Healthyish Food

This is all about simple, nonperishable snacks. Stuff that takes zero effort or preparation. I try to keep a variety of zero-effort foods in the house.

Don’t put things on the list that you don’t enjoy eating, even if you feel like you “should” add them. (For example, granola bars are a staple for some people, but I don’t really like them. No granola bars on my list!)

Moon cheese: I’m not 100% sure how this is made, but I think it’s just freeze-dried cheese curds. It’s basically like eating weird, lumpy cheese crackers. I’m not making this sound very appetizing, but it’s actually super good and I love it.

Jerky: Be careful with this one, because jerky isn’t totally nonperishable. There’s actually a fair amount of moisture left in it, and mold is a possibility. But, it’s an easy protein to keep on hand. I don’t eat a lot of meat, so I put some non-animal jerkies on my list.

Dried fruit and veggies: I really like the texture of freeze-dried produce, so I have a lot of that on my list. But regular-dried is also good. Again, you just want something that you’ll enjoy eating, that isn’t complicated to put in your mouth.

Category three: Pampering

This is your bubble baths, your scented candles, your beauty products. I don’t go in much for bath and beauty stuff, generally. But I’ve found that if I treat it as a once-in-a-while special thing, I actually kind of enjoy it.

Reusable hot packs: These ones are shaped like animals and very cute. If you are a person who gets menstrual cramps, I highly recommend them!

Bath bombs, bubble bath: I’ve never tried bath bombs, but I guess they might be fun? A lot of people seem to like them.

Skincare and beauty supplies: Will treating your skin nicely make you feel better? If it will, add these! If it will not, do not add them! (I mostly just browse Korean beauty/skincare and pick the cutest ones.)

Socks and underwear: All of the ones on my list are space-related, which has the twofold purpose of 1. being space stuff, which I love, 2. making it way less weird to have underwear on a wish list. (YMMV! Don’t put anything on your list that makes you feel stressed!)

Category four: Treats

Cookies and candies, tea and cocoa! I don’t eat a ton of candy, so most of the items in this section are only mildly sweet, but that’s just my taste. I basically just browse the gourmet food section of Amazon and add things that sound yummy.

(Anecdotally, people really like buying gifts from this section.)

Category five: Toys

Fun things that, on a good day, would make you happy!

I’ve got some books that I’ve been wanting to read, some art supplies, some small things that just seem fun (a night light that looks like the moon, a pizza cutter shaped like the starship Enterprise, etc.)

Other ideas for this category: Accessories or tools for your hobby. Plushes from your favorite fandom. Maybe DVDs (are those still a thing)?

I also throw one or two expensive, pie-in-the-sky items in this section. I don’t expect anyone to buy these for me, but it’s fun to want things sometimes, you know?

Tips for an effective list

(aka things that make it easier for people to buy you stuff)

Add items at a variety of price points. Make it easy for this to fit in someone's budget, while also having options for folks who want to buy you a nicer gift. Most items on my list are $10-$20, but there are a couple outliers.

Add items from a variety of categories. You don’t need to use all (or even any) of the categories I talked about here, but it’s a good idea to have a wide range of items. People have different gift-giving preferences!

Choose Prime-eligible items. This isn’t always possible, but it’s a good idea.

And finally: MAKING A WISHLIST IS NOT GREEDY OR SELFISH!

Even if it doesn’t always feel that way, you have people in your life who care about you. They want to help you! Having a wishlist gives them an easy way to do that.

Speaking as a person who sends care packages to people, having a wishlist to choose from is WONDERFUL. (I actually asked one of my friends to make a care package wishlist this week so I could buy something to cheer them up.) It guarantees that I’m giving them something they want or need, and as a gift-giver, that is what I want to do.

You’re not forcing anyone to buy you things. You’re not being demanding. You’re admitting that you’re struggling, and you’re offering a way for loved ones to help you.

Also: I’m doing pretty good right now! I put this list together as an example and a resource, not out of need. If you want to give me a gift, please reach out to someone you love and give them something, instead.
