Another reason why Episode Nagi is a shoujo manga
One thing from Episode Nagi chapter 21 hit me hard. I mean the moment when Nagi was thinking about how Reo believed in him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No one had ever placed hope in Nagi before. He himself has also never shown any initiative before. Nagi didn't seem like a person who would do something or be motivated to act because he believed in himself.
It wasn't until he realized that someone believed in him. Thanks to this faith, he began to act. And when there was no one around who believed in him, he was left with faith in himself.
However, Nagi would never believe in himself unless someone (Reo) believed in him first. Without it, he would still remain passive and do nothing with his life.
When I noticed this dependence, I immediately thought that a similar philosophy was presented in Fruits Basket (shoujo manga).
I'm specifically talking about story of Kisa, who had problems getting along with her classmates. She received a letter from a teacher who briefly advised her to like herself first so that others would like her.
Tumblr media
However, Yuki did not agree with this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When someone likes you, you will like yourself.
When someone believes in you, you will believe in yourself.
In both cases, the entire change depends on the other person. The character won't do much on their own because they need some motivator to influence them.
In Fruits Basket, this should not be surprising, because it is a shoujo manga that will focus on interpersonal relationships.
However, for example, in the main series of Blue Lock, where Isagi is the protagonist, the main character does not really need anyone's help for his development, because he is his own cause. Isagi does everything himself. Yes, he uses the help of others, but it is not perceived that way. He didn't need anyone else to believe in him to believe in himself. (Yes, this could be an example of his initial relationship with Bachira, when Meguru immediately began to have great hopes in Isagi. However, I don't see it as "Oh, Bachira believed in me, now I believe in myself! I wouldn't have gone this far, if it weren't for him.", because Isagi very quickly began to notice his own possibilities, which he was entitled to himself).
But Nagi is not like Isagi. He couldn't do anything on his own. He needed someone who would believe in him. If it weren't for Reo, his life would have come to a standstill. He would have no reason to believe in himself or work on himself.
Nagi is more like a shoujo protagonist who needs the presence of another person to initiate his development. He doesn't necessarily need this person all the time in order to continue to develop, but he certainly wouldn't be able to make any changes in his life without their constant presence in his mind.
And Episode Nagi (compared to Blue Lock) does not focus just on the independent development of the main character, but also devotes a lot of attention to his relationship with another person.
I'm not saying it doesn't exist in Blue Lock. It's just more emphasized in Episode Nagi, in a shoujo manga style.

The fruits basket ova/movie is such a weird thing for me.
On one hand, I'm excited for everything after Katsuya's death and Kyoko's grief and baby Tohru's issues and the bonus content we never got in the manga.
On the other, I really wish they found a way to change Katsuya's age or Kyoko's age. Because, damn, it's so uncomfortable.
I'm also still on the fence about taking those chapters away from the anime and make it its own thing considering it was huge for Kyo as well since he is in the middle of his character development when that happen in the manga and he is the Narrator.

There’s such a tragic inevitability to how the YukiKyo rivalry evolves. In a way, it’s the ultimate manifestation of the curse: these two boys who could have treasured each other, helped each other, loved each other were driven into a rivalry that neither of them really wants. And yet they end up playing into each other’s worst insecurities: Kyo affirms Yuki’s belief that he has no value and is unworthy of love, and Yuki affirms Kyo’s belief that he is inferior at everything... when neither of them has any idea of the wounds they’re inflicting. They’re both manipulated into hating each other and putting each other down, when together, they could be so strong and each give the other what they lack.
In the end, the curse is all about not having the power to decide your destiny - ‘when people love each other, but can’t be together.’ And that is why it is a terrible, twisted thing. In the end, breaking the curse is about reclaiming your own destiny, choosing the person you love of your own free will. That’s why the relationship between Shigure and Akito can never be genuine until the curse is broken, and Shigure can choose to love Akito. There is no real love without free choice.
So if Yuki and Kyo had ended up together, it would have been the ultimate poetic justice, proving once and for all that the weight of the curse and a predetermined destiny doesn’t control them any more.

Yuki from fruits basket (furuba)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see how he had a miserable childhood, his parents and his older brother were never there for him and he was basically a tool for his family’s "traditions." We see yuki’s childhood, and it fills us with dread seeing how no one was ever there for him. How misunderstandings between kyo and yuki started because of the ridiculous and toxic family traditions and those misunderstandings will probably never be mended, which is often how real life works. A lot of things don’t get fixed and it hurts when you try to move forward, it almost makes you feel guilty for wanting to live a better life. At school, yuki is treated by girls (I'd say fetishized) as a prince, and everyone simps for him lol. But machi, a new side character, one day calls him an airhead and she truly get him. She can look at him and know the loneliness in his eyes. She can't understand herself, but she has insight for others, especially yuki. She sees through his facade of pretending to be cool and prince-like. Yuki knows this and goes out of his way to be there for her. They are both child-like, but also deeply insightful. Both have had miserable upbringing and a toxic relationship with their parents, but that is not the main reason for their bond. They love each other for who they are and are willing to stay beside each other, and understand that healing takes time. That you can't "fix" each other, or find true love after which your problems vanish.
Tumblr media
This is what I love about the show, yuki’s realization that his love for tohru is the way you would love a mother. He understands this himself, which is truly impressive. “everytime I need you in my life, you have come.” His deep desire for motherly love is fulfilled with tohru’s selfless care and support. He cares for her a lot, but soon realizes that this is not romantic love. This is similar to how we recreate familial patterns from our childhood with our significant other, trying to ‘fix’ that pattern, to finally make it right. But this usually ends us up in emotionally unfulfilling realtionships because we are actively seeking out those toxic patterns and not realizing that we are doing so. Relationships built solely on share of trauma are likely to be volatile. To understand the difference between different types of love, to self-reflect, to forgive those who have immensely hurt you, and to still hold yourself together- to live a good life despite everything, is what we see yuki conquer.
The student council is a place where we saw the maximum development in him- he rages, he cries, he apologizes, and he forgives. When he lets it all out, he is truly able to change to become a better version of himself. This is truly inspirational for people who come from abusive households or those who simply did not have a good childhood. That you can also live a good life. Changing for the better and being vunerable around those you love can be very intimidating because our childhoods have taught us otherwise. But despite everything, just like yuki, we can live a good life. I don't think people realize how much this affects those who grew up relating to yuki, and seeing him overcome his trauma and move on in life can be so so hopeful to look at.

I know the movie is a prelude and whatever isn't in the manga (even if it's kyoru related) is probably going to be high school Kyoru or Kyoko/Katsuya related but I'm really hoping we finally get to see Hajime (and maybe Mutsuki) actually animated (and maybe get his sibling' names)
