Basically the sole reason I can't participate in game jams is that like 90% of them have a firm "no posting bug fixes during the judging period" rule these days. Like, I understand why that rule exists – i.e., avoiding the drama which inevitably arises when making a ruling on what counts as a bug fix versus what counts as a substantive revision – but if I tried to abide by it I think I would actually, physically explode.

What is Josei Jam?

Josei Jam is an annual visual novel game jam held from May 1st to June 30th on itch.io with the goal of making games meant for women! A game jam is an event where participants have a limited amount of time to make a game- sometimes these have themes, but the only theme for Josei Jam is to make a game for women.

While our sister jam Otome Jam requires entries to be a romance game with a female lead and at least some male love interests, Josei Jam allows participants to make stories with boys love, girls love, and even non-romance! As long as the game is intended for women, you can enter it. You can learn more on our FAQ.

If you’ve never made a visual novel before, we have a list of resources & guides to get you started. We also have a Discord server where you can find people to work with and share your progress.

Story

Diana, a Senior Game Designer from Mad Lobster Interactive, deals with burnout, night terrors and work harassment at the hands of her narcissistic boss, Godric, on a daily basis.

One morning like any other, without paying any mind to her already busy schedule, Godric tasks her with mentoring their new employee: Enya, an upbeat and passionate newbie who's yet to see the struggles of the game development industry.

Very much at her wit's end, Diana has to make an important decision that may affect not only her career but her life as a whole. Will she mentor Enya in her own way and get to know them better? Or will she be at the service of Godric and her own inner demons?

friendly reminder that ZACK JAM is starting in a little over two weeks!

One day, the users of the Art Without Blood Discord server came to a striking revelation: many of them had characters with Zack-adjacent names. Zack, Zachary, Z, Zecharias...oh, what a marvelous assortment of Zacks! These are so many, but there aren't enough! We need more Zacks! We need to fill a whole room with Zacks, let them roam free on the fields and graze on our grasses!

ZACK JAM is very simple: 

You must make a main character of your game named Zack...to some degree. Will their name be Zack? Zeck? Z? Zakk? Zacharias? If it feels "Zack" enough, it's enough. 

This doesn't have to be the player character! Just any main character, as long as this Zack is a focal point to the game.

You must use one of three audio tracks that will be created by musician and voice actor Zack Valence. These tracks are to be determined.

Additional rules!? There have to be some!

You may work on as many projects as you want.

NO games made with "AI" assets will be allowed, such as games with AI-generated visuals or prose. If your game has this content, it will be disqualified.

You may start before the jam begins, but feel free to challenge yourself to making a game in a month.

Games featuring NSFW content are allowed. Please properly tag them before submitting.

A new Zack does not need to be created. You can use an old Zack. Or maybe a Zack from the future.

This won 3rd place in the Jame Gam jam and I'm so proud of the work we did over 4 days!

I learned a lot about UI design and CSS, most proudly the skill of creating an image map. Mouse over the images, if you're on PC, to see descriptive text and click for (slightly buggy) links.

We worked great as a team, with creative contributions coming from each of us to collaboratively create our concept. The jam themes were "unintentional side effects" and "butter chicken" so we brainstormed up the idea of memories lurking everywhere, even in unexpected places like a takeout menu.

Our artist's art inspired our writing and helped give me ideas for gameplay based on the art they were making - for example, the main room of the apartment was an early concept sketch. I realized we could base the game navigation around images like this to give us a lot of clickable elements with limited art resources. This meant our artist could focus their limited time on [spoiler].

Our writer helped bring [spoiler] to life while also fleshing out the sad little world with extra flourishes, which were easy to implement due to the ease of twine!

For code, I used a lot of <include>, <replace> and <div>s to display game elements and .random() to create variety. (Sugarcube)

This is the jam release version. I will be eventually updating the game with more interactive elements and an extra demon eventually.

⚠️ Important warning: this game contains depictions of emotional abuse and destructive behavior. It also has horror themes. This is designed as a cathartic game experience for people who have gone through situations like this, but please be careful playing in case it triggers trauma. ⚠️
