A Doonesbury cartoon strip by Garry Trudeau, reproduced in Rashid Khalidi, The Hundred Years' War on Palestine. The cartoon referenced the activities of Israel and its allies in Lebanon against Palestinian refugees and other civilians in 1982, but it remains just as relevant now.

♫ Midnight Train To Georgia ♫ (Redux)

This song, written and first recorded by Jim Weatherly, was originally titled Midnight Plane to Houston.  Who knew?  I’ll let Mr. Weatherly tell you the story … “The song actually came about after a phone call I had with Farrah Fawcett. When Trump nearly ran for President in 1987
In 1987, Donald Trump teased his fans with the prospect of running for US President but then pulled away as Tony McMahon discovers
It’s a terrifying thought but in 1987, a 41-year-old Donald Trump considered running for President as Ronald Reagan completed his second term in office. Reagan, a former Hollywood actor and governor of California, had been a charismatic if divisive figure. Even in the 1980s, Trump was regarded as a grasping narcissist by his enemies. But he had a fanbase as the newspaper letters columns in 1987…

(Note: I preface this by stating my condemnation of the murder of innocents by both sides; anyone's death diminishes us. I agree with the statement by UN Secretary General Guterres that
"...The events of Oct 7th did not happen in a vacuum, and needed to be understood in the context of 56 years of Israel's "suffocating occupation" of Palestinians", further stating, "the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the appalling attacks by Hamas. And those appalling attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.")
In July and August 1982, during the Lebanon War, "Doonesbury" creator Garry Trudeau* ran a series of strips in which Roland Hedley, Foreign Correspondent for ABC's Wide World of News, went to Beirut in order to report on the emerging situation and ask some searching questions of PLO leader Yasser Arafat (mostly to do with his personal appearance).
The strip was subtle in tone, criticising Israel's actions while highlighting the plight of the people of Lebanon and Palestine, and I thought it might be useful to reproduce some of them here, to be interpreted in the context of the Israeli war on Gaza (copyright of Garry Trudeau is acknowledged).
