I thought I'd be prepared for my first big argument with my boyfriend, but I think that's because I thought our first big argument would be like, about who's going to do the dishes, or pay the bills or whatever. I wasn't expecting it to be me finding out he's a full on conspiracy theorist who's part of an existential threat against my basic human rights after two years of nothing seeming off until that point 🙃

The maga-packed US Supreme Court decided this week
* to protect bigotry under the guise of religious beliefs
* ended Affirmative Action
* struck down Biden’s plan to extend studen loan forgiveness
This is codified bigotry. If your beliefs require you to be a bigot, it’s time to question your beliefs. Bigotry being legally protected is pushing the US back to the Jim Crow era. The decisions regarding Affirmative Action and student loan forgiveness is part of the deliberate, systemized goal of maintaining oppression perpetrated by powerful, rich white people. Making it even more difficult for anyone but privileged, powerful white people to get an education and opportunities, to be able to afford college. It’s an attempt to keep the deck stacked against everyone but themselves. It’s anti-egalitarian. The far right goes to war daily against LGBTQ people, against PoC, against women. In supreme court decisions, in the vile bigoted laws they try to enact locally. In their public statements. In their tweets
Seeing the first amendment being waved around as an excuse to allow protected bigotry makes me sick to my stomach.
Call it what it is. FASCISM. BIGOTRY. DISCRIMINATION. CLASS WAR.
Please vote. It matters who is in office, on the national and local level.

Notice: I hate MAGA-hat Republicans, but
If I see you mocking them for being fat, old, sick, mentally ill, tall, short, or disabled -- for any reason other than their actual political beliefs and actions -- you will be Blocked. Even if it's in a comment on someone else's post.

The Canadian Miracle
Tumblr media
"The Canadian Miracle" is a short story published today by @tordotcom; it's set in the world of The Lost Cause, my forthcoming @torbooks novel.
I'm serializing it on my podcast! Here's part one.
Tumblr media
Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.
— Fred Rogers (1986)
It’s a treat to beat your feet on the Mississippi Mud.
— Bing Crosby (1927)
I arrived in Oxford with the first wave of Blue Helmets, choppered in along with our gear, touching down on a hospital roof, both so that our doctors and nurses could get straight to work, and because it was one of the few buildings left with a helipad and backup generators and its own water filtration.
Humping my bag down the stairs to the waterlogged ground levels was a nightmare, even by Calgary standards. People lay on the stairs, sick and injured, and navigating them without stepping on them was like an endless nightmare of near-falls and weak moans from people too weak to curse me. I met a nurse halfway down and she took my bag from me and set it down on the landing and gave me a warm hug. “Welcome,” she said, and looked deep into my eyes. We were both young and both women but she was Black and American and I was white and Canadian. I came from a country where, for the first time in a hundred years, there was a generation that wasn’t terrified of the future. She came from a country where everybody knew they had no future.
I hugged her back and she told me my lips were cracked and ordered me to drink water and watched me do it. “This lady’s with the Canadians. They came to help,” she said to her patients on the stairs. Some of them smiled and murmured at me. Others just stared at the backs of their eyelids, reliving their traumas or tracing the contours of their pain.
“I’m Alisha,” I said.
“Elnora,” she said. She was taller than me and had to bend a little to whisper in my ear. “You take care of yourself, okay? You go out there trying to help everyone who needs it, you’re going to need help, too. I’ve seen it.”
“I’ve seen it, too,” I said. “Thank you. I hope you don’t mind if I give you the same advice.”
She made a comical angry face and then smiled. She looked exhausted. “That’s all right, I probably need to hear it.”
My fellow Blue Helmets had been squeezing past us, trudging down the staircase with their own bags. I shouldered mine and joined them. Elnora waved at me as I left, then bent to her next patient.
I stepped out into the wet, heavy air of the Mississippi afternoon, the languid breeze scented with sewage, rot, and smoke. My clothes were immediately saturated with water sucked out of the ambient humidity, and I could feel myself pitting out. Squinting, fumbling for my sunglasses, it took me a moment to spot the group of angry men standing by the hospital entrance. Red hats, open-carry AR-15s. It was the local Maga Club. On closer inspection, a few of them were women, and while they skewed older, there was a smattering of young adults, and, heartbreakingly, a good number of small kids, holding signs demanding foreign agitators out of mississippi!
Bekka, a Cree woman from Saskatchewan who’d been my seat buddy on the helicopter ride, leaned in. “Straight outta central casting.”
At first, I thought she was right. Weather-beaten, white, unhealthy in that way poor Americans are, lacking access to basic preventative care. They looked so angry. Plus, the guns. But there was something else there, and I couldn’t put my finger on it until I spotted a sign being held aloft by a heavyset, middle-aged guy with wraparound shades and a sweat-sheened face: our lives matter too.
I knew he meant it in a gross way, but I couldn’t argue with it.

AITA for obviously covering my nose and mouth around smokers at work? (Tw for a very brief mention of sexual assault and mentions of bigotry)
To preface I'm fully aware that WHAT I'm trying to do is justified, I just don't know if the HOW is a problem.
Some context about my working conditions: I work in an outdoors location. I sit at a table at the front gate and check bags and permit entry. Where I sit is a fairly small open area at the base of a large set of stairs before the place people are actually coming to see. Smoking, drinking, etc is allowed everywhere on premise including the small area I sit at for eight hours a night. 90% of the patients drink (not the point of the post but to display how lax the type of event I work at is), and 50% of the adults MINIMUM smoke. The ticket booth is right beside my booth and people will stand there for up to 5 minutes on a not too busy night smoking as they wait. The customer base is nearly entirely white and almost 100% Republican. They wear MAGA hats, fly confederate flags, wear blue lives matter shirts, and try to yell at me about chemtrails if I don't shoo them away from me. I've been sexually assaulted, harassed for being Russian(?????????), called anti-trans slurs, have had weapons pulled on me, etc. And as I've said....... pretty much all the patrons are drunk. So I CAN NOT wear a mask for my own immediate safety. This is also not an every day issue as I work for an event specifically that only takes place once or twice a month
Now as to why smoking is an issue: I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. I don't remember exactly what part causes the reaction but I very quickly have a reaction to it. I assume it's something most every non smoker goes through experiencing second hand smoke: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, etc. It just happens to me VERY quickly. Now, if they don't have bags for me to check and just breeze on by after getting their tickets, I hold my breath for a quick minute until the air at least doesn't actively feel gross to breathe in. Minute is an exaggeration, because of a disability I have I can't hold my breath for more than 20 seconds. When people with bags for me to check come to my table and are smoking, I try to severely limit my breathing until it's done because I'm directly dealing with the customers and have to breathe. Where my methods might be asshole-ish come into play with the people who choose to stand around and smoke instead of leaving the area
I use my shirt/jacket to cover my mouth and nose. When it's cold I try to at least make it look like a keeping myself warm thing. It's not perfect, it's not like I'm suddenly immune to second hand smoke, but if they're only around for five minutes or so it does WONDERS keeping me from getting sick. I used to try harder not to be obvious about it, but going home throwing up and sneezing out tar for days after I work so many times has made me a bit more "idgaf if they're offended by it" sometimes. The thing is, I don't WANT to be rude about it though. My goal here isn't to cause a problem, which is the biggest concern with the customer base, but to just keep myself safe. When I try to just suck it up and take no measures to reduce the amount of smoke I'm directly inhaling, I've gotten so violently ill I've been unable to actually do my job. Admittedly I've never made a serious attempt to just ask people to not smoke around me, but in my defense it's because the response in the past has been for people to flick their cigarette ash at me and get up in my face. I think I might be too replaceable for there to be any kind of enforceable rule about not smoking in my direct vicinity
So I repeat: AITA for covering my face at work when people smoke right beside me? (And if so, any other solutions you could think of would be nice!)
What are these acronyms?

╭─► ❝Hey Lover!❞
Tao × Gender Neutral! Reader || Written by Diana (d1ana-m0nd) || Inspired by Hey Lover
Tumblr media
➢ Fluff && Not Proofread , Headcannons && Word Count 1,734
➢ You were suffering under the weight of financial struggles until a maga came along and held your family hostage. Who would have thought the person you would be double crossing is someone who you'd gain interest for.
➢ NOTE : The scene of you trying to sacrifice the troubleshooters is inspired by CSM and if ever I refer to the reader with She/Her pronouns please let me know so I can edit it out, thanks!
Tumblr media
HOW YOU GUYS MET:
Tao met you in the streets, you both happened to walk past each other that fateful day she didn't have work.
You were neither a sex worker nor a homeless person but she knew you needed help. She could tell from your eyes that you were living in fear with every step you took.
Despite being strangers, she approached you and asked if you needed help. You turned her offer down but then she ended up giving you the troubleshooters business card, to which you reluctantly accepted.
Ever since your encounter with her, you found yourself in a conundrum. She was right on the money that you needed help but, her help was something you didn't need… you weren't even sure if her help could be of use to your situation.
In the end, you gave in and decided to use her help but knowing people like her (To you, at the time she seemed like a loan shark of sorts who are preying after people with financial issues) you'll instead play her at their own game.
You hired the troubleshooters to help kill the maga who was threatening to kill your entire family. When in reality, you planned to use them as an offering to the maga in exchange for your family.
What you didn't expect was for her partner, Alma, to catch on to your lie through his sense of smell.
Out of guilt, you admitted to them everything. Both of them seemed used to being double crossed yet, they still gave you a second chance. Once they were done with the job, Tao didn't ask for a fee but she did ask you to work for Auntie instead.
"Why'd you offer them to work for Auntie's? They tried to kill us! How'd you know they won't do it again?" Alma interrogated his stoic female partner but she seemed indifferent to his questions.
"They won't." Tao reassured though, she isn't even sure about that herself, maybe she just wanted to see you again…
"Their cooking will probably kill us!" Alma screamed, though it sounded more like it was his problem rather than everyone else's.
HOW YOU GUYS ENDED UP FALLING IN LOVE:
Once you began working for Auntie, you were overwhelmed by their friendliness, everyone was so nice to you… The guilt of almost killing their friends was making it difficult to concentrate.
It didn't help that Tao and Alma went to the restaurant everyday, it was becoming more and more difficult to avoid them.
Until one day, Yaya had to take a sick leave, so you and Alma were forced to work together to cater to every customer. Unfortunately, you had to cater to someone you have been avoiding… Tao.
Her eyes widened slightly at the sight of you but quickly covered it up with a small cough. "I'll have the usual."
"I don't know your usual… this is my first time serving you." You said with a sheepish smile.
"Oh, right." She internally cursed, realizing she forgot that you have been avoiding her for months.
After that awkward interaction, Alma then began to go out of his way to make you and Tao talk more, because he was fortunate enough to witness you and Tao being awkward with each other.
Ever since he began working with you, he finally understood why Tao wanted to keep you around. You were hard working and you cared a lot about your family, you probably just stumbled upon the troubleshooters at the wrong place and wrong time, if you guys met in different circumstances. You three probably would have gotten along on the fly.
Since then whenever he was with Tao, he'd quickly ask for you to serve them before you could run off. If he's on shift, he'd tell you that Tao's table hasn't been catered to yet.
It was a slow process but you two managed to slowly become comfortable with each other - though it was mostly on your end because you were the one running away from Tao out of guilt and shame. Whilst Tao was trying her best to not make you feel more guilty than you already did.
Slowly but surely you began to gain interest in Tao. Even Auntie and Yaya noticed - only because you always did something stupid like stumbling upon your words or tripping when you see Tao walk in - though it took Alma a while to notice this. Well, he more or less found out about your infatuation for Tao because he asked you why you did those things around Tao specifically and you accidentally blurted out how you felt around Tao.
"[...] So yeah, she catches me off guard sometimes, y'know? Maybe I still feel guilty for what I did…" You rambled fidgeting with the rim of your apron, trying to figure out your feelings for Tao.
"I think I remember Yaya saying that's what you're supposed to feel when you are in love!" Alma happily exclaimed, which triggered a cold shiver to go down your spine.
You covered your face as you groaned. "That's even worse than I thought!"
Killing your crush on your first encounter? You sure made quite an impression.
After discovering your feelings, you made an effort to actively avoid Tao despite Alma and Yaya's efforts in trying to help you confess or get closer with Tao. Eventually, this did not go unnoticed by Tao, she wasn't bothered by your active evasion - she was irritated - which is why she ended up asking Auntie, Yaya, and Alma but they wouldn't budge. In the end, she ended up cornering you at the end of your shift.
You heaved a heavy sigh, tired from your shift obviously looking forward to falling face first onto the mattress.
"Long day, huh?" A familiar voice questioned, the very same voice that made your legs weak as noodles in hot water.
"Woah-" You jumped but quickly stiffened yourself. "Hey Tao! Didn't see you there."
"I don't plan on revealing myself to begin with, especially to my prey." Tao teased but you didn't catch onto it.
You cringed, recalling how you confessed to them that you planned to use them as offering to the maga in exchange for your family.
"I'm sorry…"
The female troubleshooter sighed then voiced her concern. "Have you been avoiding me because you still feel guilty about what happened in the past?"
"What happened in the past, stays there. We're in the present now. So let go of what's already out of reach."
Alarmed by her words, you began to ramble. "It's not that- I MEAN THAT'S PARTIALLY THE REASON! But, it's something else…"
"Is it because you like me?" Tao said with a smirk, which froze you on the spot. "If you thought you were slick, you weren't. And no, Alma didn't snitch on you."
"WELL THEN!" You shouted then began stiffly walking away. "I'm heading home now, I have other things to tend to!"
"Y/N, stop running away from your problems. I understand it's natural human instinct but, how would you know how I feel about you? Just because you expect the worst out of everything doesn't mean it'll happen." Her words punched you in the gut, you hated how she was right…
"Now, are you going to confess to me or not?" You could tell from her voice that found your predicament quite amusing and it irked you.
"WHY DO I HAVE TO CONFESS!? Why don't you do it yourself since it seems like you already have everything figured out." You huffed out of irritation, you faced her crossing your arms.
"Fine." Tao said, which caught you off guard. As she took slow strides towards you, it felt like a scene out of a documentary, a snake stalking its prey.
"I like you too. Now, do you want me to walk you home?"
HOW YOU GUYS SHOW AFFECTION TO EACH OTHER:
Words of affirmation
Most of the time you are too shy to compliment Tao but when you are in a dazed state, you tend to slip out a compliment or two.
Also, you don't really feel the need to share words of affirmation with her since she seems the type to be confident in herself and stands strong.
You, on the other hand, need a lot of words of affirmation, which Tao can cater to. She's oddly good at it. Most likely because she's had to deal with Alma and Nei, who always look forward to her compliments or words of affirmation.
Quality time
You and Tao neither have the time to spend together, including space since you both live with someone else.
Though not having quality time as much doesn't bother you guys but, you do check in on her from time to time including Alma in case they need something despite your financial problems.
Tao doesn't have the time to check on you but you guys try to cherish your time together at the Chinese restaurant you work in but Auntie always cuts it short, not wanting you to slack off during work hours, which Tao respects.
Physical touch
Believe it or not, you and Tao both suck at showing affection. Every time you try to kiss or hold her hand you either chicken out or Tao doesn't reciprocate your actions.
While Tao, on the other hand, is not comfortable with PDA. It's a different story when you guys are alone, she tries her best to be affectionate but there are times she withdraws due to her past.
Acts of service
You weren't the best cook, everyone knew that. But, what they didn't know was that you were determined, you tried to hone that skill everyday, just so you can prevent Tao and Alma wasting a lot of money on food.
Which is why they always find your food in their office, no matter how bad it is (though most of the time it's a hit or miss) Tao eats it because she knows you'll do better with your next dish.
Receiving gifts
Due to your financial situation, you mostly make handmade gifts for Tao since that's what you are mostly good at.
Tao gifts you things that you mostly need since you never tell her what you want, just what you need to keep your family afloat. But, when you do manage to slip up, she won't hesitate to buy it on the spot.

I’m not American so you can tell me to shut up if you’d like, but honestly the way some leftist Americans who reek of privilege and don’t seem to be living in reality at all, can still advocate for Joe Biden with their whole chests make me sick. How can anyone with a conscience stand to support that man? He just went on television and proudly claimed he was a Zionist, and in the same breath told the world that America is not a safe place for Jewish people. He is the fucking President and he can’t seem to make his own country safe for citizens, so he has to believe that an occupying force has to exist so that Jewish people can have somewhere safe. YOU ARE THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD AND YOUR COUNTRY IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE LAND OF THE FREE.
Donald Trump is a horrible person and we can safely assume he would be doing the exact same thing, only if he were the democrats would be condemning him for it. Meanwhile they are so blinded by their loyalty to being the opposite of MAGAs and republicans that they will blindly follow any leader despite them funding genocide of tens of thousands of innocent lives?? How does that President make anyone feel safe or represented. How does using your hard earned tax dollars to shed so much blood make anyone feel confident in a leader???? Your own money is contributing to this slaughtering and there’s nothing you can do about it. Except not vote for the man giving the all clear. And some people can’t even do that. Because people are under the illusion that this election is identical to the last one. It’s not. The Biden administration thinks they can win with the exact same “we aren’t trump” tactic. But supporting him this time around means you’re choosing to ignore the moral thing to do, which is not support genocide, which then comes with people attacking you because what the republicans have planned for their own country is sinister too.
I am sending so much love to those of you who have no fucking idea what you’re going to do in this election cycle, because what the fuck America? What the actual fuck are you meant to do? Evil is everywhere and I’m so sick of these (mostly) white rich liberals acting like if you don’t vote blue then you’re a maga antisemite or whatever the fuck else they’re saying rn.

Like my God, how stupid can you be??? Do you not fucking know what perfectionism is? Guess what? I USED TO BE A PERFECTIONIST. What got me to finally slow down and stop, was when I was in my first semester of college. Got sick and had to be rushed to the freaking emergency room. So believe me, I know what being a perfectionist is like. And it is NOT like what this fucking dumbass is saying.

As an American can I just say how fucking shameful it is how right you are that you can't depend on the USA
Like our leaders are making us into fucking fools who no one can trust cause oh... looks like we only honor commitments when we feel like it. The speaker can single handedly hold up aid for months by just not putting it to a vote, and the house can't even get it's shit together enough to sign the discharge petition to get it on the floor
It's just a disgrace, it's horrific and vile, and if all that weren't enough it's just plain stupid. America gets... fuck it gets so much out of sending military aid to Ukraine
It gets to fight a strategic rival without risking a single troop, it gets to dump old inventory where a lot of it was probably going to have to be decommissioned, we don't even send most of the money cause what that money actually mostly goes towards is restocking our own arsenal with new equipment which pays Americans wages we get to tax... the list of selfish reasons to help is almost endless and yet these pricks still fight tooth and nail to do the wrong thing
And once again, it makes us look like undependable allies cause we're fucking being undependable, and that weakens us so much strategically. Like even if you don't care about russia, it makes our allies in the Pacific question if they can actually depend on our support
Sorry, this stuff's just on my mind a whole lot, and would you believe that it's hard to find other Americans you can actually have this conversation with? So many smart people I know who in spite of that act like they don't have a brain in their head and just don't care
Meanwhile johnson is complaining that we need aid to Israel... well if that's what you want prick, isn't it nice that you have that sitting on your desk, already passed in the senate, and all you have to do it put it to a vote? Lightning speed legislation if you ignore the months you've stalled with it (and he's gonna send them on vacation yet again to stall more)
The fact one man can hold up the whole system, and the fact like 5 far right maga members can take the whole house hostage and the gop can't even muster the guts to sign a discharge petition... it's just sick, it makes the US into a fucking laughing stock and it's deserved
Can't even imagine if trump wins, mr wants to encourage russia to attack NATO allies. The fact that... that so few other Americans seem to care he said that, the fact that any one even considers voting for him as he sets all out political alliances on fire for his own gains... the hell is wrong with people?
Again, sorry. I just... this stuff eats at me sometimes. Just how fucking bad America is doing not just at being decent, but at serving our own interests
We could have put China and Iran in their place (something maga people claim to want) if when this invasion started we'd just dumped all out old inventory straight away, made clear we were loading up the pipeline with everything Ukraine needed, and basically said you don't fuck with the US industrial base
Might have even stopped the war, a lot harder to want to continue when you know the valve on the military aid was fully opened and then smashed so the artillery shells and fighters won't stop coming
Instead we rolled over and trickled things in, made ourselves look weak
Just can't stand it, just can't fucking stand how this country is run. Again, even if you don't care about the civilians killed in drone strikes, we should at least care about our own strategic interests
But we don't, far to many selfish scumbags, and russian stooges, and people who buy russian propaganda hook line and sinker
Anyway... hope you have a good day. Like I said, just know hardly anyone I can say this stuff to. No one seems to listen... and even if they did, I can shout all day and it's not like I can force johnson to act like an actual human being instead of toxic sludge in a suit
Just pass the damn aid, every last person with half a brain is begging you to including our generals
It makes me so frustrated and it's so damn shameful, a real stain on this country
It's such a shame that America has become an unreliable ally, I so much wish it was different. And it's bizarre to me how one speaker has so much power to block the voting of a bill. It's seems highly undemocratic to me.
Aiding Ukraine is the cheapest way to defeat America's number 1 enemy: russia. But decades of pro-russian propaganda has been so effective, it has infected American politicians and made them unwilling to stand up for freedom and democracy.
And I talk about the USA now, but here in Western Europe, we have the same problem. High on cheap gas, we have funded the russian war-machine for decades. That money has been turned into weapons and is now killing Ukrainians on a daily basis. And now we are too much of a coward to switch to a war economy.
Sorry, this stuff's just on my mind a whole lot, and would you believe that it's hard to find other Americans you can actually have this conversation with? So many smart people I know who in spite of that act like they don't have a brain in their head and just don't care
Oh same here. I can talk about this dire situation in Ukraine with only a handful of other people. Other people support Ukraine overall, but passively. And we need people to support Ukraine actively, we need more people to sound the alarm bells. But it feels like we're shouting into the void right now. Simply not enough people care.
I hope you have a nice day as well and thank you for standing with Ukraine.
