Merlin BBC UK TV Show - Opinion Piece Part 19 - Gauis’ Longevity

While watching the TV show, I was surprised to notice the extra-ordinary long life span of Gauis.

Despite being the oldest recurring character in the series, he outlives Uther, Lancelot, Gwaine, Morgana and even ARTHUR!!!!!

Like For Real?

The more I think about it the answer lies in the Season 1 Episode 13 - Le Morte D'Arthur .

A quick Synopisis

In this episode, Arthur is mortally wounded by the questing beast. Merlin goes to Nimueh to bargain his life for Arthur’s. While Arthur recovers it is Merlin’s mother Hunith whose life now hangs in the balance. Merlin decides to exchange his life for Hunith’s but Gauis reaches Nimueh before Merlin and bargains his life instead

When Merlin meets Nimueh, he sees Gauis lying unconscious presumably dead.

Merlin angrily shouts, saying he bargained his life for Arthur’s, not Hunith, Gaius or anyone else. Nimueh says the Old Religion does not care who lives or dies, only the natural balance of life and death is restored i.e Life pays with Life

They engage in a magical battle; Nimueh injures Merlin who tells Nimueh: “You should not have killed my friend!” She is then struck by lightning summoned by Merlin, and dies.

Gaius awakens because Nimueh’s death has compensated for his own.

Nimueh was a priestess of the old Religion. It was she who impregnated Ygraine ( Arthur’s Mother) using magic which lead to her death and the beginning of Uther’s persecution against magic users. However despite being older than Merlin she appears to be the same age as him. This proves that her aging process is very slow and/or she has a very long life span.

Since Nimueh’s death revived Gauis, he ends up inheriting her lifespan and/or slow aging process.

This could explain how Gauis seemed to recover quite well despite being brutally tortured in the Witchfinder episode. A man of his age could not have survived or not recovered as well from such an ordeal.

I think the Merlin creators were inspired by this plot from Harry Potter.

Potentially MAJOR spoiler for death in Domina S2 found in trailer

Watching the Italian trailer for S2, we see a shot of Illus and Julia drowning a woman. I was looking at the casts instagrams earlier, and immediately noticed that the woman they were drowning was wearing an incredibly similar outfit to one worn by Hannah Chinny, Antonia, on her instagram.

Not only does the outfit match, but so does the head piece, bracelet, and sandals.

Why would Julia and Illus want to kill Antonia? I don’t know. I imagine it has something to do with Domitius. With the way they both know how abusive Domitius has been to Antonia, they may feel that she will eventually crack under the torture and tell him that Illus was the one having the affair with Julia.

If this is actually true, I feel so sad for Antonia 😭😭 What do you guys think?

This post will seek to classify the personalities of some of the main recurring characters of the TV show using the Ennegram Personality Model.

It is a rather simple system and helps provide basic understanding of the characters core traits, desires, fears & motivation.

This system classifies 9 broad personality types.

For the sake of being concise, this post will only focus on 7 characters who I think can be accurately described using the model.

They will try to become somebody noteworthy in their family and their community.

I really think the Merlin writers just plain hated Merlin 😭

Kid has had to watch so many people he loves die like his girlfriend, his dad, most of his best friends (poor thing had to see Lancelot die twice) and his best friend/soulmate and will outlive everyone and be alone until Arthur rises again.

The fact that he probably never went back to Camelot hurts too because Gwen probably thinks she lost her best friend and her husband, Gauis basically lost a son and Percival and Leon have lost their brothers (including Merlin because he’s their little brother)

Just a few days ago, I made my soulmate realise how similar Uther and Gauis's relationship to Arthur and Merlin's are.

I myself didn't realize it until I read a fanfic that pointed it out and it just became a whole 'wtf noooooo!' moment lol.

Similarities:

Both Arthur and Uther are stubborn men that wouldn't listen to Merlin and Gauis despite them having a feeling that their friend is right.

Merlin and Gauis are loyal to their royal counterparts to a fault — even when their royal counterparts have caused them so much grief, pain and never ending spiralling masking lies as well secrets.

Both royal men won't admit they care for their non-royal friend until shit happens to said friend.

Both Arthur and Uther will eventually say they regret not listening to their loyal friend after things go south from ignoring given advice. (Example: Uther not heeding to Gauis's warnings about the price of using magic for Arthur's birth, Arthur ignoring Merlin's warnings about certain people or dangers despite eventually always finding out that Merlin was right)

Others see these two pairs as close friends

Merlin and Gauis will do everything they can to protect and remain at the side of their royal counterparts

So yeah. Though, I must say Arthur may treat Merlin much better than how Uther treats Gauis despite the many similarities and have pardoned Merlin much more than Uther would have to Gauis.

Not to mention, Arthur for all the times he deserted Merlin's advice, he does trust Merlin more than a prince/king should trust someone so there's that.

While there are many similarities, there are also many differences between these two relationships.
