Day 22: Mistletoe

"Now you."

Scully eyed the amber liquid impassively. Without looking at Mulder, she palmed the shot glass and tossed back the drink without a thought. The rush of warmth that followed it was both weakening and empowering. She hadn't let go like this in a while, and it actually felt good.

"If I didn't know better I would think you were trying to get me drunk Mulder."

He smiled what Scully secretly referred to as his Oxford smile but said nothing. He tossed back his own shot, finishing with ease and flourish. He methodically poured another and pushed it to the center of the table. Her turn.

The little hangout on Cuba’s south beach was bustling in the late hour. It was Christmas time, mistletoe and paper lanterns hung from the ceiling and the air was smoky and thick. It was her first time out of the country with her new partner, and while she was not sure if drinking on the job was SOP, she wouldn’t be mentioning it in her report.

She reached for the latest shot, favoring Mulder with a challenging stare.

But for once, he wasn't looking at her. His eyes were trained on the front entrance, on the bulky, dark-clad figure walking in. Suddenly, he stood and was at her side in a second. He grabbed her by the arm, pulling her up. When she protested, he leaned into her hair. "Manny's here," he said into her ear. "Oh, and I forgot to mention this, but you're my dance instructor."

She looked at him with open disdain. "I can't dance," she said through clenched teeth. If looks could kill, Mulder thought he might be dead on the floor.

Mulder gave her a tight smile. "Just follow my lead," he said smoothly.

They were in Cuba to expose a man claiming to have technology for sale…alien technology. Mulder knew he was a fraud (for once, she mentally amended), but suspected his ties to the U.S. government and maybe even the Syndicate went deeper than what appeared on the surface.

Mulder pulled her onto the dance floor, crushing his body against hers. Her legs were rubbery from an hour of drinking, and Mulder's proximity only worsened matters. The room was hot, and he was too close. Much too close.

The music started and he opened up their frame. It was the cha-cha, she surmised, and absolutely terrifying. "Mulder, please." Scully looked at him with such desperate pleading that he almost took pity on her. Almost. Instead, he led her through the steps with such mastery that it looked like he was the novice. "Up here, Scully." She was looking at the floor. "Into my eyes.”

She met Mulder's gaze and found herself steadied, relaxed. As instructed, she focused on him. She noticed with fascination how his eyes vacillated from hazel to brown to grey and back again. After a few moments, she could not feel the floor or hear the music; there was only Mulder, and she was tethered to him. The ease of it unnerved her, the comfort of the space between them, his hand warm and fingers splayed across her back. Overwhelmed, she pulled away from him, nearly stumbling, and instantly regretted that last shot. "Dammit, Mulder, why can't you just slow dance like everyone else?"

He laughed then and drew her close. "Whatever your pleasure Scully."

His eyes portrayed a sort of dark charm as he encircled her. His hand smoothed down her back, stopping to rest firmly just below its usual place. She prayed silently that he couldn't feel her tremble. The other hand slipped beneath her hair, the lightest of touches, yet his cool fingers on her delicate skin produced a tight coil of warmth low in her belly. Her heart beat faster. Seemingly of their own will her hands moved up across his broad shoulders, returning the embrace. Mulder was both supple and strong, and his shoulders beneath her hands felt like coming home.

With her head on his chest, she didn't have to look at him; it was her only salvation. The security she felt when she was this close to him was disturbing. Wordlessly, they swayed to the music, the alcohol's effects only augmenting Scully's sense of peace. Her eyes slipped closed.

His chin brushed the top of her head, settling there as they began to sway. The smallest sound from him reverberated through their bodies, something akin to a low purr, and the shockwaves of that little moan began to threaten her fortitude. He nuzzled her ear.

"You're not a bad dancer Scully."

It was the first time he'd ever lied to her. His voice, deep and rich, was the same timbre of that little sound, and she caught the heat and scent of him full force. Scully could feel his breath stirring the tendrils of hair at her neck, little puffs of warmth as they swayed rhythmically to the music. His lips brushed her hairline, the gently slope of her forehead, and she openly shivered. The soft chuckle that elicited from him was delightful, and he tightened his arms around her to quell the quiet tremble there. The feel of that sound from him was something she could get very used to, she realized. She imagined her resolve unraveling in ribbons at her feet.

Mulder withdrew, wanting to see her face, and Scully inwardly frowned at the loss of contact. He cupped the back of her neck with one hand, the other still around her waist. He looked into her eyes.

It dawned on her then, with her body nested perfectly into his and with the warmth and strength of his arms around her and his soft eyes searching her face, that she wanted him. She wanted Fox Mulder, the FBI’s foremost criminal profilers and now the black sheep of his graduating class, her partner, more than she had ever wanted anyone. It was an admission that both freed and disturbed her.

"Get your hands off me," she protested weakly. She pushed against him, but it was no use. Her face was flushed and she was breathing rapidly.

"I'm afraid I can't do that," he murmured into her hair, "unless you want to get us both killed. Manny has at least two men watching us."

She looked then and she could see them clearly. Two imposing men in dark clothes stood near the other exits. They tried to blend in with the relaxed, celebratory atmosphere, but failed miserably.

She wrapped her arms around him then and felt him instantly relax. Secretly, she smiled at her power and wondered briefly how else it might be manifested with him. Just as she had begun to contemplate specifics, a boisterous voice broke her revelry.

“Marty, you old gigolo, you always had a weakness for the ladies." Manny clapped Mulder on the shoulder good-naturedly, a gesture Mulder simply ignored. "As good as any weakness to have," Mulder countered coolly. Scully wondered briefly if he was annoyed by the interruption.

"Manny, this is my dance instructor, Ann. Ann, Manny, the most nefarious womanizer you will ever have the displeasure of meeting."

Manny chuckled as he took Scully’s hand to his lips. "You've just described yourself Marty," he said in a thick Cuban accent. "Let's get a table, shall we?"

They dined on spicy fish with rice and black beans and fresh fruit. Manny talked freely about the purchase of his contact and the purchase of alien technology, a coded circuit board that supposedly should allow aircraft to fly much faster than previouly thought possible.

"I'm interested in meeting Sergei," Mulder said casually. "When will he be arriving in Havana?"

Manny looked guarded, uncomfortable at the mention of the man's name, Scully surmised. Probably some bad blood between them despite their history. Scully could detect fear in the man's face. She was beginning to understand the duplicitous nature of the criminal relationship.

"Tomorrow." He took a swig of water around his mouthful of food. "I'd like you to deal with him through me, Marty."

Mulder remained impassive. "Out of the question," he said firmly. "You know I meet all of my contacts in person." Scully mulled that over. Mulder had something once about the first meeting with someone being the most important. He wanted to size Sergei up, catch him off his guard. She wondered briefly if he had done the same with her.

"Marty, this man is a small fish in a big, unfamiliar pond. You would gain more access to him by being less approachable." Manny fingered his large gold watch. "Make a statement."

Mulder cocked his head, seemingly in thought. "You want to be the intermediary," he said smoothly. "Make a profit from my business transaction. Don't you think you've made enough money just by having skin in the game?" His eyes narrowed.

Manny's eye twitched. Scully could feel the presence of his henchmen where they stood blocking the exits at strategic points throughout the establishment. She suddenly realized with some surprise who Manny was afraid of. Mulder.

The man laughed heartily, poorly masking his apprehension. "Marty, you do me a disservice," he said with a nervous laugh. "I only mean to make things better for you. If you want to maintain your position in Havana, you have to be more strategic." His eyes flitted to Scully, down to her breasts, and then back at Mulder. "Don't get distracted."

She could feel Mulder tense, his jaw tightened. Scully couldn't decide what had angered him more, Manny telling his cover how to run things, or his lascivious little glance in her direction. Whatever it was, he was livid in that very Mulder way of his. His eyes were smooth, but there was a darkness there. His full mouth was pursed.

"You mean only to make things better for you," Mulder said darkly. Scully had no idea who Manny thought Mulder was, but Mulder was playing it to the hilt. Suddenly Mulder stood, reaching for Scully’s hand. "I will meet with Sergei in the morning. We may not meet again."

Manny swallowed then, fully examining the implication of Mulder's words. Manny said nothing as he watched the two walk arm in arm into the night.

“What the hell kind of assignment is this?” Bakugou complained as he, Kirishima, and Todoroki arrived at a kindergarten not far from UA, “This is stupid, it has nothing to do with being a hero.”

“Well, Aizawa sensei wouldn’t have assigned it if it wasn’t somehow relatable to hero work,” Kirishima disagreed, “Anyway, this is going to be fun! I love kids.”

“I hate kids…” Bakugou grumbled; that wasn’t true, he just didn’t want anyone to know that he secretly wanted, like, ten of them.

“It doesn’t matter what any of our personal feelings are about children, or this assignment,” Todoroki said, sighing, “Our job today is to watch over a class of kindergartners, most of whom have already manifested their quirks. At first, it was hellish; because they were new people, the kids went nuts, behaving worse than usual because of their interest and excitement over these new people.

“Hey, you guys wanna see what our quirks are?” Kirishima said, loudly enough that all of the kids looked to him and stopped raising hell.

“Good plan, Kirishima.” Todoroki said, looking to the red head and smiling slightly.

“Yeah~!” A chorus of twenty seven tiny voices replied, excitedly rushing to the front of the classroom and sitting down in front of the three teenagers.

“Who’s quirk do you wanna see first?” Kirishima asked the children, who were all looking up with wide eyed, excited looks on their faces.

Most of them pointed to Todoroki, which wasn’t surprising to either of his companions, since he looked very unique with his half white and half red hair and the burn on his face.

“My quirk is Half-Cold, Half-Hot,” Todoroki explained, “With my left side, I can create and use fire, and with my right, I can create and use ice.”

The kids all made exclamations of excitement and awe, and he lit his left side on fire first to show them the flames before extinguishing his flames and showing them his ice by creating a thin layer of ice on the floor in front of the kids.

“Whoa, that’s so cool~!” Quite of the children exclaimed in unison.

“Man, my quirk isn’t gonna wow them now,” Kirishima grumbled, frowning slightly, “You wanna go next, Bakugou?”

“Why not?” Bakugou responded, “Alright, you little brats, you wanna see something cool?”

All the kids were tense with anticipation, ready for a show, and excited for what was going to happen next. All of them were thoroughly impressed by Todoroki, they couldn’t wait to see what other flashy quirks the other two teenagers had.

Bakugou grinned as he began to set off explosions from his palms with varying intensity, and all of the kids were impressed; wows and whoas echoing through the crowd of small children.

“Well, now that you’ve seen the cool ones, I guess it’s my turn.” Kirishima said, feeling slightly self conscious; his quirk was useful, he knew it, but it wasn’t flashy like Todoroki or Bakugou’s, and even though Bakugou had told him on several occasions that he was strong and that it didn’t matter, he wanted to impress the kids, and he didn’t think he could do it after them seeing his friends.

Kirishima activated his quirk, hardening his forearms and hands before punching his fists together, and the class went nuts, even more than they had for either of his classmates, and a couple of little boys rushed over to him and asked excitedly if they could touch his hardened skin.

“You really think it’s cool?” He asked them as the kids rushed over to him all shouting about how badly they wanted to touch his quirk and see him use it more, “Well, if you wanna see more, I guess I can do some stuff.”

When it was time for recess, all the classes went outside, and Kirishima broke rocks that the kids threw at him, Katsuki exploded the bits that flew off in random directions to prevent them from hitting people, though he did let one chunk of a rock hit Midoriya, and Todoroki made a little ice field for their group to slide around on.

Of course, that wasn’t all they did while they were outside, and Bakugou took the rowdy kids out on an adventure around the edge of the playground; he’d dubbed his group the Bakugou Katsuki Hero Agency, and all the little punks were his sidekicks. They really enjoyed this game, and it made Bakugou happy because it reminded of him when he was their age.

Kirishima played tag with his group of kids, and when they got tired of that, they played hide and seek. Kirishima let himself easily be found, and he pretended he was having a hard time finding some of the kids, just so that they’d have fun; he was having a blast, he adored children, and he thought that this assignment was probably more fun than it should have been.

While the other two did that, Todoroki got together with Midoriya and the two of them engaged the quieter and quirkless children at the sandbox. Midoriya understood exactly what the quirkless kids were going through, and he did his best to comfort them. Todoroki was a quiet, somewhat awkward person, so he was able to really connect with the quieter kids who were shy, and he managed to get them all to be somewhat chatty. He was grateful for Midoriya joining him, but it also gave him the opportunity to chat with Midoriya about the assignment.

When it was time to return back to class for lunch, Bakugou took charge of the class, bossing the little ones around. It surprised his partners how good he was with the kids; he was being bossy, but he wasn’t being mean to them, and he had a smile on his face almost the whole time, except when one kid talked back to him and he threatened to blow up their stuffed animal.

“Man, this is really fun!” Kirishima said as he, Bakugou, and Todoroki sat a the front of the class and watched the little kids eating lunch at their desks, “What do you guys think?”

“It’s alright,” Bakugou replied, sucking the last of the juice out of a juice box he’d taken as a tax from the one kid who had talked back to him, “Finally, people who respect my authority and don’t question me.”

“You really are good at getting them all to behave, it’s kinda scary since you’re so bad at behaving yourself,” Kirishima remarked, grinning when Bakugou shot him an angry glare, “But, maybe it’s cause you know what they’re like that you’re so good at putting them in line.”

“They also like his quirk, it’s impressive to them,” Todoroki chimed in, taking a bite out of his sandwich, “There’s also something to be said for the fact that Bakugou is a natural leader… They can’t help but follow someone so assertive.”

“See? It’s not just cause I can be a dick.” Bakugou told Kirishima, waving his empty juice box at his friend.

After lunch, it was story time; story time was the time where the kids would begin to settle down before taking their afternoon nap, and the teenagers split themselves into groups, each taking on the nine children they’d assigned to themselves earlier in the day.

Kirishima told them stories about things like how he’d manifested his quirk when he was their age, which made the kids laugh, and what classes at UA were like. Todoroki repeated stories his mother had told him when he was small to get him to sleep. Bakugou told them about all the adventures he’d been on when he was their age, talking about his friends from back then, and actually speaking fondly of Midoriya for the first time in his entire life, much to the surprise of his peers.

Todoroki’s group was the first group of kids to get settled in for nap time, they were the first ones asleep, he sat at a nearby desk to keep an eye on them. Bakugou’s group was the second group down, and since it wasn’t technically against the rules, he decided he was also going to nap. He had a pile of kids surrounding him as he slept, and the one little boy who’d been talking back to him earlier had curled up against his side and was snoozing contentedly.

Kirishima’s group was the last to get to sleep, but they had been lying down and behaving so as not to disturb the other kids who were sleeping already. Kirishima quietly told them more stories until they were all unconscious, and then he himself lied down to rest a bit. He was just closing his eyes, he told Todoroki.

Nap time lasted longer than it was supposed to, Todoroki didn’t have the heart to go and wake everyone up; Bakugou liked sleeping, and he tended to be a grumpy riser, so Todoroki would let Kirishima handle it, since his quirk could withstand Bakugou’s explosions.

Although, before Kirishima had the chance to wake Bakugou up, Bakugou’s Hero Agency Side Kicks took it upon themselves, begging to climb on him and poke him.

“Bakugou nii-chan!” The kids repeated, shaking him and gently beating on him to try and get him up, “Get up!”

That same little boy from earlier pulled on Bakugou’s hair, and Bakugou immediately snatched him up and began to tickle him mercilessly. There was no escape for the little punk, he was going to suffer for daring to touch his hair.

“Anyone else want a piece of me?” Bakugou asked his minions, “I’m not afraid of you punks, I’ll get you! Fight me!”

This led to Kirishima, Todoroki, and their kids watching on as Bakugou fought off nine small children on his own, getting his revenge on them for waking him up in such an annoying way.

“He’s a natural at this.” Kirishima remarked as they watched; Bakugou really did look like he was enjoying it, “I wonder if he’ll let them win.”

“I think he’s gearing up for that,” Todoroki said, watching as Bakugou allowed three kids to dogpile him and push him down onto the floor, “He is a natural, I can’t say that I expected it.”

The mob of small children covered Bakugou from the waist up and began to playfully beat on him and jump on him as he cried out jokingly.

“Kirishima, save me, I can’t… Make it much longer!” Bakugou shouted, “They’re too powerful, I can’t… Villains! Betrayal!”

“Nah, man, you’re on your own with this.” Kirishima replied, laughing.

“Some friend you are, Weird Hair!” Bakugou barked, sitting up and knocking all the kids off of himself.

“I thought you were man enough to take them all on,” Kirishima responded, a cheeky grin on his face, “You’re really asking for help right now? They’re just kids.”

“I’m trying to entertain them, damn it, help me!” Bakugou snapped.

Kirishima knew that, he just wanted to mess with Bakugou a bit.

“Red Riot Hero Agency, let’s go save Bakugou!” Kirishima declared, raising his group of children to action.

The kindergartners were having a lot of fun, and so were Kirishima and Bakugou. Todoroki took his kids to the quieter part of the room and worked on coloring books with them, complimenting their art as they worked on it, and even accepting some drawings the kids did of him. It warmed his heart that they liked him enough to draw little pictures of him.

When it was time for the teenagers to leave and report back to UA at the end of the day, Kirishima didn’t want to leave, and the kids didn’t want any of them to leave either. Bakugou was exhausted from how rowdy the group of kids he’d been with were, but he’d enjoyed it, so he was ready to leave. Todoroki was also ready to leave, mostly because he was eager to get his report done while it was fresh in his mind.

When they got back to UA and turned in their reports, Aizawa revealed the true purpose of the assignment:

“There was no point in it, I just thought it would be fun to see how you interacted with little kids.” Aizawa said, shocking everyone, “But the fact that most of you returned in better moods than you left in, and that you found your own meanings in the assignments is a good thing. As a hero, you’ll have lots of small children looking up to you someday, it’s good to know that you all can handle it, and not everything you do will have an obvious purpose, it’s good to find and create your own meanings in things, seeing what others don’t see.”

Astral Chain Review - Anime Police Academy

Seeing Astral Chain in motion may be what catches your eye, but the graceful execution of attacks is something you have to experience for yourself. Astral Chain delivers gratifying, kinetic, and inventive combat that goes beyond genre conventions–and it retains that excitement from start to finish. Couple that with an attractive art style brought to life through fluid animation and cinematic-style cuts in battle and you have yet another standout action experience from developer Platinum Games.

As an elite cop on the Neuron special task force, it’s your job to investigate the ever-growing presence of the otherworldly Chimera that threaten the world. Catastrophic incidents are abound as Chimera spill in from an alternate dimension, the astral plane, but of course there’s more to the phenomenon than meets the eye. To get to the bottom of it all, you simultaneously control both your player-character and a Legion, a separate entity with its own attacks and abilities–think of it as a Stand from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. This dynamic is at the heart of Astral Chain’s combat.

Astral Chain’s sense of style bursts at the seams with each battle.

It takes time to get the hang of it, but once you do, working in tandem with a roster of Legions feels seamless. You earn Legions over time, accruing a total of five, and each one offers their own set of skills and cooldown attacks to upgrade via a skill tree. While they can be sent into the fray to perform auto-attacks, swapping between them effectively to juggle specific abilities creates the satisfaction of tearing down the monstrous Chimeras.

Initially, there are so many variables at play that it can be daunting. You have chain binds to lock enemies down for a few seconds, timing-based sync attacks that unleash devastating blows, and showstopping sync finishers that top off the wild spectacle (and replenish your health to boot). You can even get creative with combos, like utilizing the AOE stun, gravity pull, and crash bomb–all from different Legions–to concentrate a ton of damage on. Even an unchained combo lets you briefly unleash two Legions at once. And if that already seems like a lot to handle, you’ll also have to consider executing special attacks from directional inputs when it’s best to use them.

When you dig deeper into Astral Chain’s systems, you see some of its lineage–particularly the chip system of Nier: Automata, the game which Astral Chain director Takahisa Taura was lead designer on. That system manifests as Ability Codes that you equip on each of your Legions to grant them specific buffs and perks, which can significantly change how they function.

Astral Chain isn’t about running head-first into fights against monsters that seek to destroy you, though. You have to be smart about positioning, dodging, and the limited energy of your Legion. Enemies are more than just fodder; they can overwhelm you with sheer numbers, size, or speed. Some may require you to meet certain conditions to defeat them, forcing you to use non-combat abilities in the midst of the chaos. And bosses come at you with unforgiving attacks that’ll test your skill as much as your patience.

You have options for creating your own cool anime cop, it’s too bad they never really talk.

With a multitude of factors and challenges at play, combat places much more emphasis on devising the right tactics for the right situation. Astral Chain provides a tremendous box of tools that are effective in their own right and an absolute joy to use.

If there’s a fault gameplay-wise, it’s that movement can sometimes feel imprecise–don’t expect the same buttery smoothness of Bayonetta. For example, the Beast Legion’s mount mode winds up in an unpredictable direction, and the pistol combo forces you to flip backward. It may result in falling off ledges or unintentionally getting in harm’s way. Thankfully, it’s an occasional frustration that doesn’t detract from the core experience.

Astral Chain delivers gratifying, kinetic, and inventive combat that goes beyond genre conventions–and it retains that excitement from start to finish.

If you watch gameplay carefully, you quickly see how slow-motion, camera cuts, and subtle audio-visual cues in combat serve to signify opportune times to make your move. These flourishes are also how the game cements its bold sense of style. Popular manga artist Masakazu Katsura lent his hand to lead the character designs, resulting in some of the best-looking anime cops around. And when your bombastic actions in battle are matched by visually-striking momentum and tenacity, it delivers a unique thrill that makes Astral Chain special to see in motion.

Further complementing the game’s grand spectacle is its soundtrack. The groovy house tune heard in the police headquarters is infectious and the somber guitar melody at the stray cat safehouse hits like a reprieve from the chaos that envelops the world. Tense instrumentals and hard-hitting rock remixes of songs seamlessly bounce between one another during some combat missions. Unrelenting metal tracks propel boss battles and an ethereal Nier-like theme plays in the astral plane. Sprinkle in some J-rock worthy of an anime OP and Astral Chain rounds out the musical spectrum to great effect.

Astral Chain isn’t just about flashiness and stylish action, though. You’re given room to breathe between combat scenarios that comprise its chapters (or Files, as they’re called). Structurally, it’s somewhere between the traditional open world of Nier: Automata and segmented stages of Bayonetta–chapters funnel you through hub areas where you’re free to take part in side missions or explore for optional activities. Not everything is laid out on your map, so it takes some detective work to unveil all the hidden content.

Astral Chain’s shortcomings don’t overshadow what it does best. It’s an incredible execution of a fresh take on Platinum Games’ foundation, standing among the stylish-action greats.

Investigation scenarios are peppered within the main missions, where you analyze the environment and talk to locals to solve the mysteries at hand. Piecing the clues together properly awards you with a top rank, and it’s no sweat if you get things wrong. You’ll often jump into segments of the astral plane, which feature the more intense fights, and these areas incorporate light puzzle/platforming elements that ask you to use Legion powers in different ways.

The activities you undertake outside of combat aren’t exactly groundbreaking, but they provide enjoyable ways to engage with Astral Chain’s vivid world. It’s a welcome variety that also helps the pacing from chapter to chapter. Astral Chain never sits on one particular element for too long; it knows when to move on.

Investigation is just one way Astral Chain breaks up the pace.

Now, style doesn’t always equal substance. The overarching plot touches on the conventions of evil authority figures who abuse the power of science for their own agendas, and it also relates to the nature of how you’re able to wield the power of Legions, which are tamed Chimera. However, these themes are hardly explored. Rather, Astral Chain relies on cliches within its story and exposition. As a result, the more pivotal moments feel a bit less consequential. While some anime-esque tropes are just plain fun to see play out, others are borderline nonsensical even in context.

While you choose to play as a customized male or female cop on a special task force, your sibling–who’s on the same team–becomes the narrative focal point with fully voiced dialogue. Your own character is relegated to being an awkward silent protagonist. It’s disappointing because Astral Chain has so much stylistic potential to build from in order to give its lead character a distinct attitude. I can’t help but see it as a missed opportunity, especially when both characters are voiced when they’re your partner. In the end, the narrative presents stakes that are just high enough that you’ll want to see it to the end, and, thankfully, every other part of the game remains outstanding.

Astral Chain’s shortcomings don’t overshadow what it does best. It’s an incredible execution of a fresh take on Platinum Games’ foundation, standing among the stylish-action greats. And its own anime-inspired swagger makes fights all the more exhilarating. You’ll come to appreciate the calmer moments in between that add variety and offer a second to relax before jumping back into the superb combat. After 40 hours with Astral Chain, I’m still eager to take on the tougher challenges, and I’ll be grinning from ear to ear as I hit all the right moves, one after the other, while watching it all unfold.
