day 4: friends and family

got a couple of recs today for the lovely byler fic rec week event!!

The Pact by @starsarefire824! this has been such a fun, interesting, and complex exploration of madwheeler that i’ve personally been really grateful for. i think a lot of times fanon can kind of become ingrained in the minds of a fandom to the point that in some areas, you don’t see a lot of exploration and divergence from what the common fan consensus is. i feel like the madwheeler dynamic is one that kind of suffers from this, but starsarefire’s exploration of them, specifically in a situation where both are bi and are trying to confess their feelings for other people, has been such a breath of fresh air. everything feels really plausible for the characters, plus it’s just been fun to read about Max and Mike trying to make things work out between them and the people they love and having it all go horribly wrong. like, yes, they’re miserable, but there is something inherently funny about Mike and Max being exiled from the party and only having each other to hang around. so, yeah, it’s got a fantastic plot, interesting character exploration, and a nonlinear narrative, which i’m always a huge fan of, so definitely check this one out!

i think there is someone (you love) by @lookslikefireflies! this is by far the best El pov fic i’ve ever read - the author understands her on a different level than even the duffer brothers do tbh. it’s got some good byler angst/emotions in it, but what i loved most about it is (once again) the El characterization, and the relationship between the Byers-Hopper siblings. i cannot recommend it enough

i could be brave by @ghoultaffy! this one was just a fun one-shot of Mike coming out to Lucas. i read it a while ago, but it still sticks out to me as a good example of a coming-out fic :D
