something im starting this year is a very self-indulgent, "my year in review" thing where i list 7 video games i enjoyed this year + 7 movies from this year that i liked because as time goes on i feel like i'm getting worse and worse at determining what i did and when i did them so this is basically just a place for me to journal the things i enjoyed this year for future reference.
all the movies are 2022 releases but since i'm hardly ever on top of current video game releases. my games list is gonna be all over the place. im mixing them up. feel free to read if you want yippee it's meant for me but since its being posted publicly ill write em all up as little recommendations. going in no particular order other than alphabetical and alternating between a movie and a video game i liked this year. also why 7 of each ? because 7 is my favorite number fuck you
The Batman
-hmmm. thoughts. congratulations to our second gay batman, robert pattinson. ok this is only half a joke. i love the riddler being a twitch streamer terrorist i like when media modernizes older characters it's funny. gotham truly felt like a shithole in this movie. soundtrack fucked. can't fight city halloween was on my spotify 100 wrapped
Tumblr media
Inscryption (2021)
-i fucking suck at this game, i still have not beaten the trapper and as i understand theres like 2 whole other parts of the game to go or something??? so no i have not beaten it yet. but i have also sunk an unholy amount of time TRYING to beat it and i didn't get sick of it. it's a very dark but very entertaining card game and it has a free demo. even if you don't like card builder games i think you should try. it has a very unique atmosphere and premise
Tumblr media
Bullet Train
-yes i liked the cringe brad pitt action movie. fun fact this was actually specifically tailor-made for me in a factory! it has a large cast of assholes trying to kill each other and it's funny and wacky and i love the directing. that sounds so fucking nerdy to say but i want to be a film director so im gonna say it. the directing of the action sequences especially was really impressive to me because there's only so much space/movement your camera can (believably) achieve when filming in a small, rectangular, ever-moving box like a train and i think mr david leitch did it very well. also tangerine and lemon funniest characters in an action comedy ever
Tumblr media
Milk Inside a Bag of Milk Inside a Bag of Milk (2020)
-i kind of don't want to say much about this on the off chance someone reads this and also decides to play a game on this list but. listen. play it. it's like a dollar. it's very short, it's about a girl dealing with mental illness, and that's all i'll say about it.
Glass Onion
-mr benoit blanc u are so fruity. but ohg this was fun. it was fun! and it was especially more fun to rewatch it and see all that i missed and the small moments that they weren't really trying to hide from you. i enjoy the concept of being gaslit by a movie. also janelle monae is always so fun to see act
Tumblr media
Paradise Killer (2020)
-honestly, there is so much i hate about this game. the sprites are awkward. the voice acting is bad. the platforming is abysmal. yet it's still here because i think its world is genuinely insane and unique and it knows the exact type of vibe its going for with all these terrible people in a vaporwave reality and it achieves it and also its a murder mystery and i like those. give it a try
Tumblr media
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
-yeah we all know her pussy slaps. there really isn't anything new for me to add. it's funny. it's got good action. michelle yeoh best actress award NOW!!!!!
Tumblr media
Pathologic Classic HD (2015)
-yea this one is kinda cheating. i started it last year and got like 2 hours into it and gave up and then did a bunch of other things but i finally figured out how to get my controller hooked up to my laptop this year and i played it. 100%'d it. its proudly displayed on my steam profile.
Tumblr media
look at that. awful. horrible terrible plague walking simulator 0/10 am playing again
Tumblr media
Nope
-i love jordan peele. i love keke palmer. i love daniel kaluuya. this movie was made FOR MEEEEEEE it was very slow and tense and i know a lot of people complained about the slow pace of it but the build-up made (SPOILER) reveal all the more terrifying. speaking of terrifying, the scene where everyone (SPOILER) is the scariest thing ive seen in years and i think i have claustrophobia now :) also akira homage <3
Tumblr media
A Short Hike (2019)
-this one was soso cute and relaxing :) it was very funny and had a cute artstyle and i beat it in like 1 hour. not a very big commitment but its charming enough to want to come back to
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
-ummm. so. puss in boots??? that shit slapped????????? it had NO reason to be that good. like obviously the animation has been spiderverse'd which SLAPS but the they put their whole puss(y) into this movie and they didn't have to. it's good. all the characters were SO fun, literally all of them. i love the stupid little dog. he is my scrimblo. go check it out if you haven't it is NOT the soulless cash grab i thought it would be
Tumblr media
Slime Rancher (2017)
-so like, conceptually, this game is weird as fuck. a first person shooter where you suck up little jellies and feed them and harvest their poop. its insane. its also very relaxing but also very ...management-y, like the way stardew valley is where its technically very relaxing but you are doing SO much to maximize ur profit for the day. i love that shit. look at those things. theyre adorable
Tumblr media
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
-ohg. knumckles
Tumblr media
SOMA (2015)
-ok so i don't actually get scared that often BUT here is a mike secret. ocean shit SCARES me i do not like anything set under the ocean and the fact that this game takes place underwater freaks me the fuck out. i dropped my 3 hour save file to switch to little baby for bitches mode after 3 hours not because the monsters themselves are scary but because emotionally i cannot handle monsters on top of a deep sea setting. also the story was really good you should play it

Honestly? Pretty much everything in this anthology sounds good, but here's the three I'm most excited for:
Far Sector: Enduring Farewells Writer NK Jemisin and artist Jamal Campbell reunite to provide a new epilogue to the award-winning Far Sector. According to DC's release, 'Enduring Farewells' is "set at the end of Green Lantern Jo Mullein's 12-month probationary duty, Green Lantern John Stewart arrives at the City Enduring to help wrap up her tour, and escort her back to Oa." The new epilogue is also said to act as a bridge to Geoffrey Thorne's 2021 Green Lantern run.
.
The Signal: The Light that Shines This new Signal story, by writer Brandon Thomas and artist Khary Randolph, sees Duke Thomas transported to an alternate future Gotham, where he is Batman. The story is said to be a "spiritual successor" to 'The Second Signal' from 2021's Batman: Black and White #6.
.
Bloodwynd: Pit Stop Writer Lamar Giles follows up his work on Static: Up All Night with this new Bloodwynd story, drawn by Sean Damien Hill. 'Pit Stop' is set after 'A Superman For Hell' from Action Comics Presents Doomsday Special #1, and sees Raphael Arce discover "the true history of the Bloodwynd mantle and his family's connection to the Blood Gem".

this is a truly insane article written by some right wing lunatic however. i would bet money we see less female nominees and winners going forward at all the awards that went gender neutral, and obviously any award show making the choice for gender neutral categories obviously does not care about the risk of shutting women out, but they have to be aware of it?? so i wonder if by being overly conscious of it, women will end up being nominated equally, if only at the beginning.
the spirit awards have been nominating more women lately, having awarded women best director two years in a row and in 2020 having nominated mostly women (4/5!). however 2020 was a pandemic year and was unusually diverse across the board, 2021 was more normal, but still affected by the pandemic disruption (in 2021, three women were nominated. that first happened in 2018). the spirit awards has given best director to just four women in its entire history though. the los angeles critics circle has awarded only four women for best director as well, but with jane campion winning twice (in 1993 and 2021). the gotham awards have awarded considerably more women, 11 total, although they awarded 5 of those before the category had a slate of nominees (which seemed to start in 1997) and there are several moments where many years pass without a female winner. they’ve only nominated a female majority twice, and only once if you exclude female directors that co-directed with men (2004, lori silverbush was nominated alongside her male co-director michael skolnik). in 2021, four women were nominated (none with male co-directors) and maggie gyllenhaal won, but again, last awards season was still impacted by the pandemic. so we shall see but i refuse to pretend like this is progressive lol

bea’s villano lyric analysis!
based on my own opinions and some conversations i have had with others/their theories
i still have the same opinions about the way in which ant is releasing this
I know I could’ve stayed but I couldn’t find a reason / so I left you with a rock on my hand and i ran with my demons
he left her because he wasn’t settling for a failing relationship and felt that he could make them both happier by leaving
Hay tantas cosas [so many things] between us that were left unsaid / so you kept the truth about me locked up in your head
Social media + the press were making so much noise about the breakup that was pro-Jasmine that she never said anything because it wouldn’t have been true (hence why she may not have released any music)
Don’t worry / put the blame on me / let’s leave it here
Why am I the villain / continue with the story that I am the bad guy
By not saying or doing anything at the time when she had the upper hand, she was silently agreeing with the general public that he had seriously wronged her - no reason to shift or correct the narrative if it’s in your favor already
I don’t care if they hate me or look at me weird / I don’t stop it anymore / the role of the hero is expensive to me
He gave up trying to resist public opinion because ultimately that’s not why he was angry and there was no option to justify himself
You was Harley Quinn / I was the Joker
He uses this metaphor to show what people were thinking of him: that he was an abusive partner who manipulated her into trusting him until he stabbed her in the back
But hid behind the heels and dress to make up for that poker face you would put on
This could possibly be talking about the 2021 gotham awards and her parading around with her friends and singing “my man” but it could also be just about how she moved to la, started attending a bunch of events, and didn’t look back
All that shit you did wrong / I hope you had a good time on that pedestal you stood on
One of his best lyrics ever I think - he wants to know if inflating her ego to surf the pain was ultimately beneficial for her. Adding fuel to the fire by having someone from your camp tell the press that he ruined the wedding that was 2 weeks away just to make people extra mad? Yeah.
We did it all / New York to Miami / now I’m really finna ball
He moved away and is free now to do what he wants
Dolce and Gabbana while I’m dancing with the stars / and we can keep it secret how I really put you on
Ever since they split, he’s been very successful by booking a marvel role, starring in one of the most successful movies of 2022 at the box office, and attending the met w tommy hilfiger and then multiple campaigns and a full collection. Meanwhile she has no new projects lined up and is relying on her friends to keep her supported. Besides the fact that it’s quite obvious she got signed to CAA through him, he alludes to the fact that he supported her throughout the relationship both financially and career wise. Some of her roles such as monsters & men and honest thief were gotten through him and it’s highly likely that he used connections to secure other projects for her, but she would never admit to this because her schtick is being a strong independent woman who lives free from a man’s support
I got new friends / it’s iight I tied up all the loose ends
I think this confirms what we’ve all been speculating - he made clear which of their mutual friends he wants to associate with and now he’s moving on
Now the way I’m moving call it new sense / thank you now I’m back to feeling like a human
He was done with the relationship almost a year before they broke up because they were going through a rough patch and she refused to communicate and instead lashed out at him and pushed him away. He gave up on trying to fix it because she wasn’t willing to work it out and instead shifted his focus to his career. And this was after he had gone to therapy specifically to stay with her and had begun working on his problems for her, but this didn’t matter because she was evidently spiteful and refused to return the favor when he needed her to contribute to the relationship. So ever since, he had been just going through the motions of their relationship while she had regretted her actions and was consistently praising him online and attaching herself to him while he barely acknowledged her. He finally decided that he wasn’t in it anymore and left, and since then he has felt less like a robot and more like a person since he is making the decision to be around people who show up for him like he does for them.

Poison Ivy #1 and #2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poison Ivy issue #1 reveals Ivy in the middle of a suicidal mission, one in which she plans to take humanity with her. Writer G. Willow Wilson in her take making references towards horror, film and TV properties Annihilation or Hannibal. Well, I’m a reader. Annihilation the Nebula Awarding winning ecofiction book by Jeff VanderMeer, part of the Southern Reach series, I am familiar with more than the loose movie adaptation. Still parallels abound with philosophical questions of nature, identity, being, destruction, transformation and horrors mingled with beauty. Artist Marcio Takara has really gone above and beyond in the details for the comic. The coloring by Arif Prianto is particularly worth attention giving each place and shift on this journey its own sense and distinction. Lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou from dialogue to written excerpts and more shifting and distorted as need be. Even many cover images are uncanny, to name one variant by Dan Mora, made me recall VanderMeer’s novel.
Tumblr media
However, I’d argue the real sense of terror is the more than one crisis that the comic evokes. This isn’t just about the environment and harm to it reaching a certain point, but to Ivy herself. And this crisis she’s in (alone) is clearly not just physical but another psychological one. Which makes the issue acutely painful and debatable in taking an also homicidal, even at times strung out, route as that’s a common yet problematic portrayal when it comes to figures grappling with mental health issues in media.
The method at play for this apocalypse first teased back in 2021 in the Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant comic entitled “Ophiocordyceps Lamia” as well raises questions. In Batman #124 “Photosysntheisis” Ivy is diminished in her abilities, desperate and leaving Gotham. Next, details yet untold, in Colorado with quite the deadly weaponized spores of pathogenic fungi bottle marked with an esoteric rune of much interpretation. Continued in Poison Ivy, dialogue speaks to a psilocybin light show, again Prianto’s who is the colorist for the series key, page and panels a full rainbow. Eden in Gotham as well a verdant, rave sort of palette. Now fungal life in DC’s universe is also alien in source, part of The Grey not The Green. (Nor in real life are fungi easily categorized in terms of plant or animal, instead a kingdom of their own. Raise your hand if you happen to love mycology like me.) Though, mushrooms and the like can still be in Ivy’s wheelhouse. Even used previously to this way back in 1995 with similar body horror inducing visuals in Shadow of the Bat Annual #3. (The latter incidentally has one of my favourite quotes from Jason Woodrue about Pamela that she’s “A peculiarly deadly mass of contradictions!”) It’s all part of a strong impression we’re going back, not just to Seattle and her origins (Woodrue included), but in general.
As various creative teams have also depicted through the years Ivy and her powers, sometimes under different influences can reach from local to world shaking results. A recent example just months ago the seemingly once again whole Ivy ended up saving Gotham during Fear State. Similarly, one can look to many more comics where, unless Ivy’s not all herself or under influence, her targets are specific— the elite, exploitative, predatory, and abusive. Nor when it comes to matters of unsustainability, are workers really her enemy. So, the level of indiscrimination in these recent issues, initial victims being lowly workers, helpful motorists, livestock and ranchers, farmers, harassers she can best and knows she could leave alive for now, infecting a packed diner of customers young and old, two cops (after a woman who again reminds of Harley), repeatedly the end goal to encompass an extinction of all humanity, are more conflicting and worrying events.
It’s a lot of horror but then the first page of the miniseries also tells us this is a love story. Yet, what kind is uncertain. (Here’s where I’ll write you’ll must tread carefully elsewhere for any analysis of Hannibal.) We see again the further estrangement of Ivy and Harley also involving the Gardener, in previous Batman issues. But Harley isn’t far from Ivy’s mind. In “Ophiocordyceps Lamia” Ivy spared a woman who reminds her of Harley. And Ivy’s reminiscing and romanticizing still, at the bleakest moments. DC Comics readers know in the main comics this non-monogamous couple has for years at this point basically been broken up. Ignoring recent success like the Harley Quinn Animated Series and Eat Bang Kill Tour comic. (There is a cute reference to Frank, the carnivorous plant, on Harley’s shirt btw.) Additionally, to end this Pride month the show graced with their own special #Harlivy emoji. Too 2021’s Pride Anthology with the Harley and Ivy poked fun at the all the back and forth. The couple also returned for the 2022 issue with an entry showcasing the pairs insecurities and strong points rather well. And a special variant with the two for the anthology as well seemed as popular as ever. It should not go unacknowledged a lot of people, including those part of the LGBTQIA+ community, put in the work to have comics and covers realized for DC Comics to mark Pride. (And yes, as corporations do always court money. It’s a little convenient where Harley & Ivy do or don’t show up and how.) For Poison Ivy #1 Kris Anka contributing the Pride variant with the oh so striking dark look of a more fungal Ivy with rainbow flower head piece.
Tumblr media
But if you were looking and ordering issues as I was its worth noting the DC Pride Month announcement didn’t mention about Ivy’s comic book being one where “humanity had its chance”. There has been of course debate on whether a genocidal comic arc is appropriate to be included. I do have to say with the increasing rise in fascism and hostile climate for LGBTQIA+ people a villainous genocidal and suicidal queer woman character in conventional American comics is a choice. One I wouldn’t probably think about as much if superhero comics had the maturity so to speak that gave readers a plethora of opportunities to feel not only entertained but seen. The latter is something because of the numerous facets of one Pamela Isley’s character many, many different people have felt. And how to generations now she’s a figure that has been embraced. Sometimes we need the villains. Sometimes those villains appear that way because of the status quo they challenge and upend. Where when we also ask ourselves how far gone the world is— are we going to endure that sort of world anyway. Ivy before has too been a voice arguing for a sense of awareness and urgency. There’s a panel in #2 that riffs a popular webcomic meme.
Tumblr media
This indictment of complacency however is undercut as other megalomaniac motivations of Ivy’s are revealed wanting to return to the godlike power of Queen Ivy.
Tumblr media
Then there is also the topic that over years & iterations I’m familiar with Poison Ivy has appeared more reliably as vegetarian/vegan. Wilson breaks with an overwhelming number of past portrayals by numerous creative teams in this respect too. The main cover of issue #1 by Jessica Fong the first stark indication. An image of Ivy in a restaurant overgrown with plants, mushrooms, and transformed victims, on a table a rare-cooked steak, knife and fork in hand juices dribbling as she wipes her lips. Wilson herself appears of the opinion a veg eating Ivy is the result of “someone didn’t think that through all the way” along with this thread with a review declaring the fan debate over Ivy’s diet settled by DC. But more significant than opinion is the manner this carnivore Ivy is argued in the comic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ivy’s words are offensive and contemptuous of the very question and idea otherwise. There’s a further fallacy in the argument that has Ivy disparaging not just some rich consumers lacking awareness but, the whole of vegetarianism/veganism. Along with deflecting the complexity of the subject of and agave, and its uses that have long history and challenges beyond vegetarian purposes to also include effects of climate change. It’s a missed opportunity to make greater real factual points about industrialized food and systems along with prejudice that factor into these arguments, vs. individuals.
More than a merely misguided protagonist, to make the character of Ivy ‘that bad’ it necessitates her being that wrong. This Ivy has crafted an ecofascist manifesto, as a narrator not only nonlinear but unreliable. Another madwoman, tool for suspense, perhaps engaging readers on a deeper level. Yet part of it is all too serious, and as some readers do it will be taken at face value. For a character murdered, reborn, split and reformed many times remember—could even some corruption, breakdown or doppelgänger ostensibly clarify this time. Because again is that question why this, why now?
Since The Cycle of Life and Death in 2016 where Ivy very much had a life, at work not just as a scientist, solving her colleague's murders, gained daughters, and had friends, fans have been waiting and asking for Poison Ivy to get a solo comic again. Speaking for myself this new miniseries is something with her name on it I have a hard time recognizing. It appears not only openly dismissive of some of the character’s key traits and creatives who contributed to Ivy’s growth but antagonistic towards people involved in certain activism, concerned with the climate crisis, or involved with the food on their table. All I can gather right now is this Poison Ivy miniseries is one to avoid so far if you’ve been drawn to and followed Ivy’s character development over the years.

Chadwick Boseman’s Wife Shares ‘It Has Been The Most Challenging Two Years’
Shannon Dawson
Tumblr media
Source: Kevork Djansezian / Getty
On Nov. 1, Chadwick Boseman’s wife, Simone Ledward Boseman opened up about her late husband’s life and legacy during an emotional interview with Whoopi Goldberg on Good Morning America.
Holding back tears, the 32-year-old widow sat down for her first interview since the death of the late Black Panther star. She went into detail about the actor’s quiet battle with colon cancer, calling the difficult period “the most challenging two years” of her life, according to PEOPLE.
Chadwick Boseman’s cancer diagnosis began to“spiral” during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It seemed like, ‘Is this a crazy coincidence?’ That we get to actually be inside, we get to be here with family, you know, together, and everybody in the world is also experiencing this togetherness in the midst of this awful, scary, unpredictable time.”
In order to keep the severity of his health status out of the public eye, Simone said that she and his family kept their circle tight. Sadly, in August 2020, Boseman died at the age of 43 after a four-year-long battle with colon cancer. News of the Marvel star’s death, “shocked and devastated” the world, given that two years prior, he made history by becoming the first Black superhero to join the Marvel universe following the release of Black Panther. Boseman played the almighty King T’Challa in the blockbuster film.
Simone Ledward Boseman is still mourning the loss of her husband
Now, nearly two years after Boseman’s untimely death, Simone is still struggling to come to terms with the loss of her husband.
“Some days, I’m doing worse than I’m really willing to acknowledge. Other days, I’m doing better than I feel comfortable admitting,” she said.
Boseman’s legacy continues to live on through his scholarship program at Howard University, which is the actor’s alma mater. In 2021, the university’s college of fine arts was renamed in Boseman’s honor.
“We have four scholars. One of them graduated this past year, and was very proud to be the first graduating Boseman scholar of the first graduating class of the Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts,” Simone said while referencing Shawn Smith, a recent Howard graduate who said Boseman’s powerful acting legacy “paved the way” for his educational success.
“I can’t believe that I was so lucky,” Simone said tearfully of her late husband. “I can’t believe that I got to love this person, and I also got them to love me too.”
Chadwick and Simone were together since 2015. E News reported that the couple quietly married in 2020, shortly before the actor passed away.
Last year, while accepting Boseman’s Tribute honor at the Gotham Awards, Simone told the audience that her husband always “made a practice of telling the truth.”
“He is the most honest person I’ve ever met Because he didn’t just stop at speaking the truth, he actively searched for it—in himself, in those around him, and in the moment,” she continued, before adding:
“The truth can be a very easy thing for the self to avoid, but if one does not live in truth, then it’s impossible to live in line with a divine purpose for your life. And so, it became how he lived his life, day in, day out. Imperfect, but determined.”

Just great. Not only do women have less roles in movies but now they will have to compete again men in award categories
The Independent Spirit Awards were the latest Hollywood voting body to go genderless with its awards, announcing on Aug. 23 that the best lead actress and best supporting actress awards were being retired forever.
Instead, there will be only “best lead performance” and “best supporting performance” awards handed out to a gender-diverse pool of 10 nominees in film and scripted series categories at the ceremony, scheduled for March 4, 2023.
To make up for the two eliminated categories, a new category, honoring a “breakthrough performance in film,” was added — for a total of seven total acting awards presented, down from eight previously.
This move follows similar ones made previously by the Grammys (which went genderless in 2012) and the Gotham Awards, which made a similar move in 2021.
“It’s something we’ve been discussing for a while,” says Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent, which mounts the Independent Spirit Awards. “It’s come up over the last two years as something for us to consider, both at the staff level and the board level.”
Welsh says the reasons for the decision are twofold. First, Film Independent sees acting as no different from the various other disciplines that contribute to filmmaking. “For almost 40 years at The Spirit Awards,” he says, “we have recognized writers, directors, producers, cinematographers and editors very well without any reference to their gender. … Why aren’t we evaluating actors just on the basis of their craft, like every other award category that we’re giving out? It just seems like it’s reflective of the cultural moment that we’re in.”
Secondly, the new categories offer a more inclusive space for gender-nonconforming nominees. “The non-binary population really has no place at an awards show,” Welsh says. “You’re required to choose if you want to be identified as male or female. The Spirit Awards are a welcoming, inclusive ceremony. It’s about freedom of expression. And if people can’t freely express who they are and we’re requiring to come to the show and identify in a way that they’re not comfortable with, that just seems plainly wrong.”
Welsh acknowledges concerns were raised internally about the elimination of the female categories — a move that could be construed as running counterintuitively to the post-MeToo and Time’s Up Hollywood landscape.
“That was certainly discussed,” he says. “And there’s a very legitimate concern that Hollywood is obviously not a level playing field when it comes to women in the industry. … But I don’t think the way to address that problem is by holding on to sort of antiquated award categories. I don’t think that’s the solution.”
For Kirsten Schaffer, CEO of Women in Film, a group that since 1973 “advocates for and advances the careers of women working in the screen industries,” the genderless awards show trend is something to applaud.
“The work of Women in Film, particularly in the last few years, has been to advance women and gender nonconforming people in the industry. And so this is definitely a way to do that,” Schaffer says.  “All of the actors who identify as non-binary or don’t fall cleanly into a gendered category now have an opportunity.”
“I applaud them for trying something new,” she continues. “Sometimes I think the thing that’s going to level the playing field for women is to change the dynamics around gender. So that if we all moved in direction of gender nonconformity or nonbinary-ism, maybe then we wouldn’t have such a problem.”
Like the Gotham Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards are chosen by committee, meaning winners are chosen internally and can be adjusted to avoid a lopsided number of, say, male-identifying winners in any given year.
Schaffer says she’ll be observing the results carefully to see how the rules change plays out. “It’s important to ask the questions and have the conversations and I think it’s also important to keep an eye on it,” she says. “If it ultimately hurts women, then I hope that they’ll readjust.”
As for the Academy Awards — which are voted on by a body of over 10,000 members — in a recent media scrum, new Academy CEO Bill Kramer said the organization is “conducting due diligence” on gender neutrality, “but there’s no plan right now to activate that.”
Women may represent half of the global population in real life, but fictional film worlds get by with just a third.
The latest It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World report from San Diego State’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film has found that men outnumbered women onscreen by a factor of 2 to 1 in 2021. This proportion held steady across the shares of lone protagonists (31 percent), major characters (35 percent) and all speaking characters (34 percent), with less than 3 points of deviation from the year before.
“Despite the major disruptions in the film business over the last couple of years, onscreen gender ratios have remained relatively stable,” Martha Lauzen, the Center’s executive director, said in a statement.

Seven percent of the films sampled — the 100 highest-grossing movies in the U.S., according to Box Office Mojo — featured more female than male characters, and 8 percent achieved gender parity. The remaining 85 percent of movies released last year were majority male.
More than half (57.6 percent) of 2021’s major female characters were white, down from nearly three-quarters (74.4 percent) the year before. Black women represented 16.4 percent of major female characters (up from 13.2 percent in 2020), but the increase in BIPOC representation was mainly boosted by Latinas (12.8 percent) and Asian women (10 percent), who each had a 5.7 percent share of the pie in 2020. (There were no major MENA female characters in film last year, and 0.4 percent of major female characters were Native American.)
The study notes that if Latino- and Asian-centered movies like Encanto, In the Heights, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Minari are excluded from the analysis, the share of Latinas and Asian women as major characters falls to their 2020 levels (5.3 percent and 6.7 percent, respectively).
“These findings suggest that the increases in Latinas and Asian and Asian American females in major roles are largely due to their presence in a handful of films,” said Lauzen, “rather than their integration in a wide variety of films.”
It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World also qualitatively analyzed character portrayals, finding that women featured onscreen tended to be younger than men. Their character goals tended to revolve around personal life and their relationship status was more likely to be identified than male characters, who were more likely to have work-related goals and an identifiable occupation. The report also conducted the same analysis on a sampling containing every film that appeared on the Digital Entertainment Group’s weekly Watched at Home Top 20 list in 2021.
