grace and frankie season 7
I don't know if I'll turn any of this into actual meta, but I'm gonna write down my initial thoughts on the final season in no particular order
I loved the very end so much, and I loved that they didn't draw out the suspense of whether or not they'd choose each other and figure out a way to be happy together forever. The story offered, quite literally (and via Dolly Parton!?), the hope of a truly permanent togetherness.
Fully cried about Robert's memory loss. Too close to home. I'm rarely that invested in Robert and Sol's storylines, and I still couldn't care less about their stupid theater, but the entire memory thing was written and acted beautifully and it even made me hate Peter a little less.
This is hands down my favorite season in terms of how they addressed the issues with Grace's alcohol and drug consumption. Those things are a part of her, and it was clear for maybe the first time that Grace is fully aware that these addictions are a part of her. Her being the one to talk to Coyote about his near-relapse was brilliantly done and the kind of scene I used to long for from this show and have long since come to the terms with the fact that we'd never get. But we did. I love that Grace is firm that she doesn't want to go to an AA meeting with Coyote, and I love that he respects that. And I love that she does listen to him about what he observes, and acknowledges that turning to these pills is the wrong choice for her, and eventually changes the behavior. I have never believed Grace would ever quit drinking, and the conclusion to this part of the story made total sense to me for her character. In addition to Coyote, I really liked that a lot of different people commented on stuff related to substance use in a way that was honest but typically relatively non-judgmental.
Grace's parents. Grace's dad. God. Her dad was a completely different person than anyone I pictured for her parent, and I absolutely loved the way they painted that character entirely through Grace's memories. While Robert is suffering memory loss, Grace is simultaneously tapping deeply into memories she was too afraid to touch. 7x5-7x16 were just so much deeper than a lot of what I've come to expect from the show?
I really hated the writing in 7x1-7x4, and while I still don't LOVE how much time we spent on everyone on this show apparently always starting or promoting self-owned businesses while also being deeply in a life of crime or just about to start.......the writing itself was so much better in the 7b episodes than the 7a eps.
Grace is cool now. She has evolved. She's still got fences and rough edges, but she's more self-aware, and more aware of how she wants others to perceive her. Not how she's afraid of being perceived (as anything but the perfect WASP wife), but how she, the real her, "the Grace that she is with Frankie" is perceived. She says yes to the adventures. In some ways, this entire 7b season was like an extended Say Yes night.
Coyote and Jessica are the best side characters, and certainly the best of that generation of characters.
They painted together! And that will make it more possible for Frankie to mourn the way she used to be able to paint when she had full use of her hands. GOD.
I can't believe it's over and I'm so incredibly relieved I liked it. Grace and Frankie fandom has been and will continue to be such a lovely spot, and I'm so grateful for the friends I've made and experiences I had because of this show. I don't think the writers and showrunners always made the best use of the characters' time from a plot perspective, and I think there are shows out there that are more consistently beautifully written, but everyone who created Grace and Frankie truly made a gorgeous reflection on love, the ability to change and grow at any age, and the unfairness and inevitability and poignancy of the passage of time.

I'm super late on requesting something for the DVD commentary meme, but if it's not too late how about this passage and the scene that follows from "you will continue to need": "Grace wakes up cold. The duvet is down around her waist and her back is bare to the morning breeze. She rolls over, ready to chide Frankie for stealing the blankets, but Frankie isn't there." Thank you!
oooh, i am happy to talk about this bit!  first i have to give a big shout-out to ellydash: it was her suggestion that the final scene take place outside, which really crystallised for me what i wanted it to do and be and mean for grace and how i wanted to show her growth over the story.
the fic opens with grace awake in bed, not getting up; she gets an alert from the dating app that unsettles her; she wants to escape, alone, to the beach but has uncomfortable coffee with frankie instead; and then she returns to her bedroom and lets fear drive her into action (replying on the dating app).  this final scene is very much in conversation with everything that happens there.
grace wakes up alone - as she did at the beginning, and as she too often did when married to robert - but she’s not lying in limbo; she’s woken by frankie reaching out via text.  i wanted grace to have that moment of separation so it wouldn’t feel like she’d need, going forward, to have frankie right next to her at all times; that’s obviously not healthy.  but what she does need is to not feel abandoned.  frankie’s not physically present, but she’s still there for grace.  in fact, she’s there before grace needs her, because her act of communication is what wakes grace.  and though texting isn’t exactly an extremely intimate medium, it’s enough as a part of their whole: their exchange brings up reminders of the night before, reinforces that their dynamic hasn’t changed, causes physical reactions (grace blushes, squirms, smiles), and is the catalyst to grace getting up.  instead of abandoning the phone as she did in the opening scene, she uses it to bring them together.
she goes outside not as a search for solitude, but as a way to connect, and the coffee isn’t an afterthought or something to keep her hands busy, but a gift, one she’s stable enough to doctor with cream and sugar for frankie (as opposed to needing to flee frankie’s enjoyment of food in the earlier scene).  instead of thinking of how frankie gets in her way (frankie’s hair all over the kitchen counter), she only sees frankie’s beauty (her messy hair, again, also calling back to the night before in bed, makes grace beam).
their conversation over coffee is, again, a little uncomfortable for grace.  but in the beginning, it’s uncomfortable because she doesn’t really want to be honest, to expose herself to frankie.  at the end, she’s entirely willing to be honest with frankie; it’s the rest of the world she’s not so keen on.  instead of separating herself, though, she relies on the physical intimacy she’s developed with frankie to enable further emotional intimacy.  and instead of making a decision out of fear, she decides to be brave.
in the first scene, she ran away to safety and privacy and then chose an act - using the dating app - that was basically compulsory heterosexuality in a nutshell.  she was trying to rebuild the kind of life she was expected to want and that she wanted other people to see her succeeding at.  at the end, her fear is still of being visible - “in front of the neighbours and God and the early-morning La Jolla beach jogging club” - but she’s acknowledging that she has desires of her own, and more, she’s speaking them into being and acting on them.  (it’s important that frankie models this for her, but that the change comes from grace.)  she’s still grace - she still won’t go outside and be entirely exposed, she insists on brushing her hair and wearing tinted sunscreen - but she’s being honest with herself, and with frankie, and she isn’t making herself hide any longer.  she’s letting herself be open and happy.
oh, grace. :D
thank you for asking!
(happy to eventually answer more of these, if anyone wants)

Y'all if you're not reading @ellydash 's "Anyone who has become" on AO3 then what are you doing with your life. The most recent chapter actually killed me. I'm hoping the next one resurrects me. It's a fuckening experience yall. Read it. It's the definition of "grace Hanson is a gay disaster".

3. The best character you’ve written for: Grace is a character that I imagine is really, really hard to write and I think that you capture her internal world AND her external actions in ways that are compelling, thoughtful, and true. I always appreciate an author who makes me think about a character in new ways, and you've done that for me with Grace!
8. What I like the most about your writing: I love how grounded in day-to-day moments and actions your fics often are. Puzzles and smoothies and bedtimes, quiet moments that wouldn't necessarily be worth making art about except that they're sharing those moments, they're sharing a life they've fought so hard for, and that makes every day, and every moment, worth illuminating.
Oh wow, thank you so much. Grace Hanson my beloved! It really means a lot that you would say that—my G&F stories are about very, very tiny life things for a reason, and I am incredibly grateful that you get why they are that way and what I wanted to do. <3

Sooooo......
I'm picking up an old idea. Dusting it off. Rethinking some aspects and hoping the fandom will like it. We'll see and I'll hope for the best.

Grace’s excuses for not dating men are flimsier than mine: “he never gave me that adavan” in a very imaginary hallucination I had. hmm, must remember to use that one in the future.

UH, GUYS
Autostraddle’s got a March madness for best coming out — AND THEY INCLUDE GRACE HANSON?????
Tumblr media
I love that summary ^^ even though I think Netflix /Kaufmann and co are a bunch of cowards probably don’t see it that way.
She’s a #15 seed up against a #2 — Erica Hahn from Grey’s Anatomy — so the odds don’t look great but seriously IT IS AN HONOR JUST TO BE NOMINATED even if we all know grace is a disaster lesbian not a bisexual

Answer 20 questions
tag other people you’d like to know better
tagged by @thesewomenrulemyworld   :)
1. Name:
Nope, not here. I’m happy to share my name with Tumblr friends in private, but I have students and if they happen to stumble across this blog I’d rather them not know it’s mine.
2. Nicknames:
People call me Boss Lady and I LOVE it.
3. Zodiac sign:
Sagittarius, and I’m textbook.
4. Height:
5′6′’
5. Languages spoken:
Just English fluently. I know a little Spanish and a smattering of curses in various languages.
6. Nationality:
USA
7. Favorite fruit:
How do I pick a favorite fruit!? Strawberries, if I must.
8. Favorite season:
Fall has Halloween and Thanksgiving and my birthday and sweater weather. Fall wins.
9. Favorite scent:
Anything rich and spicy or marketed as a “mandle.”
10. Favorite color:
Green is my signature color. :)
11. Favorite Animal:
DOGS
12. Favorite fictional character:
I never thought I’d identify with a character as much as I identify with Grace Hanson, but then lesbian!tumblr introduced me to the gay disaster known as Bernie fucking Wolfe (and also to the knowledge that even British soaps are better than a lot of American TV). I’ve never related to a character more in my life!!! If I think about movies or literature I’ll be here all afternoon, so I’ll leave it at those two.
13. Coffee, Tea, or hot chocolate:
TEA
14. Number of blankets I sleep with:
Lots.
15: When was my blog created:
A year and a half or so ago? I had another blog years ago that I deleted, but had to come back after coming out to talk about lesbian things and Grace & Frankie and Jane Fonda’s face. Turns out there’s a nice little literature-loving corner of Tumblr that likes to discuss those very things. :)
16: Favorite subject:
I always adored my music and literature classes throughout high school and college. I’m not a lawyer but am a law nerd, so my favorite courses relevant to my course of study were business law related.
17: Currently watching:
Nothing!! No time! I work, I play a little, I go home and read a little poetry because I’ll fall asleep too quickly to get very far with a novel. I have quite a queue lined up for when things calm down a little.
18: Favorite band:
This is an impossible question. I’ve been listening to The National a lot lately.
19: Instruments played:
I’m a pianist and I sing. One time I played the violin in a performance of a friend’s composition because it was open strings and his real violinist bailed at the last minute.
20: Favorite book:
Another impossible question. I read Mrs. Dalloway when I was in high school (independently) and it was the novel that opened my eyes to what words can do.
I’m supposed to tag people but I never do. If you’re reading this and wanna do it, consider yourself tagged. :)
