not completely finished with s3 yet but i just finished To Catch a Mouse and i need a moment to dive into poppy and ian’s relationship dynamic because holy shit
i just think it’s so fucking interesting the way they view each other, because it’s clear they both think very highly of the other but they react to it in very very different ways
for example, poppy obviously has a lot of respect for ian as the mastermind of mq, and she shows it mainly in wanting to be like him. she looks up to him, both as a mentor and a friend, and wants to be where he is one day. she wants to design her own game, to have visions of great things like he does. she wants to be cool like him and control a workspace like him and joke around at his expense the same way he jokes around at hers. poppy wants so badly to just be like ian because she sees what he’s accomplished and thinks it’s fucking awesome. she thinks he’s fucking awesome, she has since she was a nerdy little 19 y/o MIT student bouncing in her seat to get to talk to him.
and ian has respect for poppy as well, but it’s surrounded in a thick, thick coating of jealousy. ian knows that poppy is insanely talented, he knows that mq would be absolutely nothing without her. she built the entire thing, but he can’t let her have claim to a single bit of it, not even a fucking shovel. he is terrified of poppy because he knows she’s better than him, she’s smarter, more talented, and has the ability to not only dream up a game but then actually make it. he thinks so highly of her that he actively tears her down with little comments every chance he gets, but as soon as she gets upset with him he steps back, gives her a little validation and a little encouragement, and manipulates the situation until she feels crazy for being mad. for gods sake, the man’s biggest fear in the entire world is poppy overtaking him, because he knows she could and very well just might, and his huge fucking ego can’t allow that to happen. it’s safer for him to control her, to keep her engineering his vision, so that she can never surpass him.
and all poppy fucking wants is to be like him, with a legacy of her own.
:/

oh my GOD i keep forgetting that in SBC's canon (bc i think abt the Mad Rabbit AU which is in a weird time limbo for both 'cosms) everyone thinks Phineas is dead. Like nobody knows he's alive until Alice arrives in StoryBrooke and tells people/creates a portal between the two worlds.
Can you imagine thinking you best friend is dead & that it's YOUR fault for 415 years and then a little blonde bitch just comes along and tells you he's alive?? and has been VIBING this whole time, living his best life??? how do you even REACT to that oh my god

Why are there Infinity Loops or Möbius Strips in Good Omens?
The infinity loop, it's the idea of something that is unlimited and endless, you know...
Tumblr media
In this post, I'm going to explore some of the symbols in the show that I think relate to this concept of eternity. For example, have you noticed that the infinity loop shows up amongst the symbols at the start of Season 1? While God's narrates about her "ineffable game" of her own devising, here it is on screen:
Tumblr media
Why do we see so many infinity symbols here? Where else can we see this same symbol?
Read on for the places I've spotted it in both S1, S2 and the book. I’m hoping you’ll let me know if I missed any, and what you think it all means!
Eternity in Good Omens
In the book, when Crowley is explaining the concept of eternity to Aziraphale, he uses the idea of a bird which flies every thousand years to the same mountain to sharpen it's beak. Here's the conversation, with Aziraphale's interruptions edited out (pg. 55 - 56 in my hardcopy):
“Just you think about it," said Crowley relentlessly. "You know what eternity is? You know what eternity is? I mean, d'you know what eternity is? There's this big mountain, see, a mile high, at the end of the universe, and once every thousand years there's this little bird—” “Okay. And every thousand years this bird flies—" "flies all the way to this mountain and sharpens its beak—” “Sharpen its beak on the mountain," said Crowley. "And then it flies back—” “And after a thousand years it goes and does it all again," said Crowley quickly.”
This story originally came from a folk tale called the Shepherd Boy. It's very short and you can read the Brother's Grimm version here.
If we take Crowley at his word, then eternity in Good Omens is represented by repeating the same thing over again, whether that's flying forever to the same mountain, or having to watch the Sound of Music "over and over and over and over and over and over and over" into infinity.
The Infinity Loop
The common symbol for infinity, ∞, was invented by the English mathematician John Wallis in 1655. Being an extremely popular symbol, it shows up in a lot of places, including the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. Several other uses are detailed on the wikipedia page.
So, where does it appear in Good Omens? In addition to God's monologue, we also see it during the S1 baby swap sequence as part of the Satanic nun's costumes. Here it is on the upside-down watches they wear:
Tumblr media
Here it is again on Newt's belt buckle in S1:
Tumblr media
Here's another possible infinity symbol on Newt's computer screen, when he's working at United Holdings:
Tumblr media
Outside of the show, it also appears on the merch released post-S2 (though a little bit disguised in the form of the snake wrapped around them). Included is the tagline of "The end was just the start".
Tumblr media
There are also two references to infinity in the book. Here's the first very near the start (pg. 14 of my 2015 hardback edition):
“He [God] plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, [ie., everybody.] to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.”
And here's the other, closer to the end, at the airfield (pg. 363 of my edition):
“Adam glanced up. In one sense there was just clear air overhead. In another, stretching off to infinity, were the hosts of Heaven and Hell, wingtip to wingtip. If you looked really closely, and had been specially trained, you could tell the difference.”
So, Good Omens makes a few references to infinity, which I find interesting in itself. But wait, there's more!
The Ouroboros
There is another symbol which also appears in Good Omens and also suggests a form of repetition - the ouroboros. The ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail and depicts an eternal cycle of renewal - an end which comes back to the start again. I recommend taking a look at the whole wikipedia page, which is quite fascinating:
Now, this would be a rather abstract representation, but I think this appears on the wall of Nina's cafe. Unfortunately, in my image Terry's name has been cut off, but it does say Terry and Neil within those segments of the loop:
Tumblr media
So we have the infinity symbol, the ouroboros... anything else? Well, yes, there is a third symbol for us to ponder over.
The Mobius Strip
Closely related to the idea of the infinity symbol is that of the mobius strip. To oversimplify things, the mobius strip is a object which is a continuous surface in a loop. At first glance, it appears to have two sides, but these are indeed all part of the same side (maybe we should call this "our side"?). As shown in the below gif, an object traversing the surface of the strip can repeat in a continuous loop.
Tumblr media
Where does the mobius strip appear in Good Omens? Well, it appears in the book. Here it is being used to refer to Anathema's broken bike wheel (pg. 92 in my 2015 hardback edition):
“Behind the Bentley a bicycle lay in the road, its front wheel bent into a creditable Mobius shape, its back wheel clicking ominously to a standstill.”
And again, describing the discussions of the Them, while Adam is coming into his powers (pg. 229 in my hardback):
“Serve everyone right if all the nucular bombs went off and it all started again, only prop'ly organized," said Adam. "Sometimes I think that's what I'd like to happen. An' then we could sort everythin' out." The thunder growled again. Pepper shivered. This wasn't the normal Them mobius bickering, which passed many a slow hour. There was a look in Adam's eye that his friend couldn't quite fathom—not devilment, because that was more or less there all the time, but a sort of blank grayness that was far worse.”
Not only does the word "mobius" appear twice in the book, but Neil has continued to be interested in such ideas, releasing the song Mobius Strip in April 2023 (as brought to my attention by @embracing-the-ineffable). The song is a meditation on the nature of time, magic and how things tend to repeat. In the song, the grandfather shows the boy a trick to creating a mobius strip using paper, tape and some scissors. Here's how the song concludes:
"I'm... Somewhere on the strip We all are, walking the sign of infinity into the darkness And I'm looking for signs of a life, in a memory Reflected in the mirror I'm a mobius strip We all are We only ever see one face It's the twist that brings you back where you started"
If you're unfamiliar with the idea of creating a paper-based mobius strip, here's a video on how it works:
youtube
Is the loop Aziraphale and Crowley?
To form a mobius strip, you need to cut the paper first, flip it, and then join the ends back together.
To me, this reminds me a lot of the S2 opening sequence, when we see the bridge disconnect, separating Aziraphale and Crowley on either side, only to then reconnect at another place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does this mean the bridge, and perhaps the loop, represents our ineffable duo? This merch sure seems to suggest so...
Tumblr media
That could be one interpretation of this sequence, though I'm sure there are others. What do you think? Does the loop say anything about Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship to one another?
Put it all together and...
In summary, we have at least three different symbols signifying some sort of repetition in Good Omens - the infinity loop, ouroboros and mobius strip. So, what might they mean? Why do you think it's been included, and so often? Even more importantly, have I missed any? There's endless details to be mined from this show, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are more.
I have a few theories, but nothing concrete yet, so I'm really interested in hearing everyone's ideas!

Okay but but hear me out, what kind of ritual or sacrifice do I have to make to whatever entity that allowed for Good Omens S2, RWRB, Heartstopper S2 AND young royals S3 to be a thing to negotiate the next tragic and chaotic pairing to be one Simon Oliver Snow and one Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch on our screens?? Bc… pretty pretty pretty pleaaaaase. Its beyond a want it’s a cosmic need.

I saw your friedrich and edwina creations and im hooked! do you have any hc for them??
Our Friedrich x Edwina tag
Tumblr media
Thank you anon! I’m gonna focus on their first encounter.
CONTEXT
After s2, the ton avoids Edwina and there’s lots gossip about her (she’s not the angel she pretended to be, she’s why Anthony chose her cold sister instead etc).
Edwina is broken and no longer believes in love. She still longs for true love but thinks she’ll never experience it.
Friedrich wasn’t keen on meeting anyone, especially someone chosen by his aunt. But he caves when the queen promises to leave him alone after this.
Charlotte doesn’t tell him anything about Edwina’s past in case he gets the wrong idea.
THE ENCOUNTER
To escape the gossip, Edwina ventures in the fairy tales section of the library. Her Appa and Kate used to read them to her and Edwina was hoping the nostalgia would numb her pain and transport her to fantastical lands.
Friedrich sneaked out of the castle in civilian clothing for a moment of peace before the ball. Knowing books to be a worthy distraction, he slips into the library.
While browsing the shelves, he saw a petite woman struggling to reach a book. He handed it to her. It’s a copy of  Grimms' Fairy Tales.
Fred stares at Edwina in awe. He's well acquainted with beauty, being part of the highest echelon of society yet he's never felt breathless like this.
Edwina was frazzled. The perfect debutante should regale herself with high-brow classics or books on matrimony, not a children's book. But Edwina wasn’t a debutante or perfect anymore, was she?
Snatching the book away, she tried to hide the cover. She couldn't bear a stranger mocking her fondness for fairy tales, a trait shared with her late Appa. A connection she clung to. She couldn’t let him tarnish that. “Thank you, sir. But I am not a lady in distress and your assistance was uncalled for. Good day” she snapped.
Friedrich gaped at her, giving Edwina the chance to appraise him. He was strikingly tall with golden locks framing a handsome face. A navy jacket hazardously thrown over his shoulders with a loose wrinkled shirt underneath. Edwina had no inkling of his rank but she should have heard rumours about him. Maybe he was a worker? Maybe he wasn’t from here? Maybe he didn’t know her?
As she turned to leave, the stranger stuttered in a German lilt “what is your favourite Grimm brothers’ tale?” Shocked, Edwina stared. So he was not from here, just like her.
Anger forgotten, Edwina's heart went out to him. It was not easy integrating the ton, an insulated community that did not look kindly upon foreigners. Edwina was spared some of its judgement thanks to Kate’s rigorous training and Mary’s lived experience. Did this man have similar connections and resources? Did he have family here? Did he miss home?
“Miss?” whispered Friedrich, uncertain. Edwina’s eyes softened. The man suddenly looked out of place in the shadows of towering bookshelves. Face haggard and eyes sunken. Had he been sleeping well? Edwina could not sleep a wink the first few weeks and would crawl into Kate’s bed at night.
Flustered by Edwina’s stare, Friedrich bashfully smoothed his hair and shirt.
“I apologise for my unseemly appearance, my lady. My travels have left me weary and I did not expect company.”
“No sir, the fault is all mine! You caught me unaware and-”
“there is nothing to apologise for.” Friedrich interjected “I should have announced myself."
“I certainty did no expect anyone from the ton to frequent the library so early, or ever really.” Edwina joked.
“That is a fair and just assessment.” Friedrich acquiesced, eyes dancing with mirth. “But I am not from here. I’m a mere boy valiantly escaping the clutches of an aggrieved aunt.”
“How so, sir?”
“Well, she is all out of sorts about tonight’s ball and my imminent introduction to a debutante. I am dreading it all, to be frank.”
“She only means well and hopes for your success in British genteel society. But she wishes for your happiness above all else.” Edwina concluded with finality.
“I shall relay your unwavering faith to her, my lady. She will be pleased to have a follower in you.”
“I am merely speaking from experience" revealed Edwina. "I was so distraught before my first ball and so was my family! Yet my sister sat me down and soothed my frazzled nerves. Her kindness knew no bounds despite everything. Because of everything.” Edwina mused, eyes faraway and sad.
“Your are a living testament of her then, I have never met a lady quite like yourself... It is decided, I will attend tonight’s festivities with a willing heart. A failed courtship will not dampen my spirits!” announced Friedrich, steering the conversation away from Edwina’s family.
“A failed courtship?!” Edwina exclaimed before slapping a hand over her mouth. How rude of her!
“Indeed, My Lady. Fortunately I was mere infatuation but her rejection weighs on me still."
Edwina wordlessly reached for his hand and intertwined their fingers, desperate to offer comfort. His tale was hauntingly familiar except she was in love. She had to leave her love at the altar. To her sister.
Composure crumbling, she choked back a sob when a thumb fluttered across her knuckles. I am here. Edwina steadied her breath and chanced a look at the stranger. They were leaning into each other and his face was so close. Azure eyes shimmering with worry and… affection?
She yanked herself back. “To what do I owe the pleasure of this encounter, sir?” she hastily stuttered.
Friedrich’s fingers flexed around thin air, mourning Edwina’s phantom touch. It had felt so right. Her touch cajoled his soul and left his senses in disarray. He yearned. Yearned to hold, touch and protect. To love.
“Sir?” a dulcet voice called.
“I-I came to find refuge. Before the ball. To escape reality. And I miss home.” spoke Fred in a stilted cadence.
“I see. Is there a particular book you’re looking for?”
“No, just… fiction will suffice.”
Edwina squashed her budding familiarity with this stranger. Love was not meant for her and he already had a lady in sight. This man was in need of friendship. He was trying to find his footing in a new country after fleeing heartbreak. Loosing sleep. Scouring the shelves at dawn for a taste of home. Edwina had judged him too hastily in fear of being hurt. She had to make amends.
“Are you familiar with the ton’s customs and moeurs, sir?” Edwina abruptly asked.
“It has been a while since my last lesson, My Lady. Why the sudden curiosity?” Friedrich asked quizzically.
“You must be nervous about tonight and being prepared always calmed with my nerves. I have a rudimentary knowledge of gentlemen’s etiquette but I can still be of assistance! I can be your dance partner? Or correct your posture? I know where the boutiques are too!” Edwina eagerly offered.
“That is very kind of you, My Lady. But I fear I do not follow.”
“There is no judgement here, sir. You must have noticed from my accent that I am a foreigner too. I know how it feels to reckon with the ton’s archaic traditions, the pressures of assimilation and the ton’s unforgiving scrutiny of foreigners. We are expected to be well-versed in everything that pertains to England to not risk social condemnation. The women more so then men. But It is primordial you make an impression at your first ball!”
“I… I see.” Friedrich’s mind was racing. She thought he was a foreigner who was about to attend his first ball! Pondering if he should correct her, Friedrich weighed his options.
He could reveal his rank, possibly humiliating the young lady. Or he could keep quiet and save her from mortification. Additionally, he enjoyed basking in her kindness and warmth. Not many were brazen enough to treat him like person. She was most likely married and he would reject his bridal prospect, never to see Edwina again. A white lie would not hurt, would it?
“I would very much appreciate your help. I am lacking in certain areas, mainly what the ton has to offer, My Lady.”
Delighted, Edwina forgot her book and she laid out a map of the ton to explain its key locations: boutiques, ballrooms, the palace etc. Friedrich was enthralled by her clear and often, humourous descriptions.
After two hours, their impromptu lesson came to a grinding halt as people started filtering into the library. Friedrich and Edwina became skittish, eager to avoid detection for different reasons.
“Sir I wish you and your aunt all the best tonight. If we cross paths, please act like we never met.”
“Why so, My Lady?”
“Associating with me could ruin your chances at happiness. It is not worth it.”
“Do you believe that?”
“It does not matter what I believe" Edwina bit back.
“From this encounter, you have done nothing to warrant that title. My opinion of you is dictated by your actions and words, not gossip. If we do have the fortune of meeting tonight, I would be honoured to dance with you, My Lady.”
Edwina was at a loss. Here was a man committing a grave social faux-pas… for her? Surely not. He was simply a man of exemplary character, nothing more.
“I would be honoured, My Lord” whispered Edwina. “And my favourite Grimm’s fairy tale is Rapunzel.”

Remember Khloe, the Musae in like S2?  What if Nick DID sleep with her?  And what if she was pregnant when Renard ran her out of town?
I can just imagine her having a girl.  Fast-forward 12 years, and that girl turns out to a Grimm--she’s an early bloomer like her grandma Kelly Burkhardt.  Khloe wouldn’t actually care that her daughter’s a Grimm, except half her lovers are wesen, and most of THEM certainly do care.  It takes all her enchantment to convince them not to behead her daughter, and detracts from the energy she can put into inspiring her would-be artists.  Clearly, this situation isn’t sustainable.  So she ships the girl off to live with her father.
The girl herself had, up until this point, no idea who her father was, much less that he was a Grimm.  Khloe expected her to be a Musae--she expected to be a Musae--so the fact that she had a father was pretty insignificant, right up until her eyes began turning rim-to-rim black.  Her Mom ships her to Portland with a friend, since Renard still prohibits Musae from crossing into his Principality under pain of death, and she gets dropped unceremoniously on Nick and Juliette’s doorstep (bc Nick/Juliette, sue me).
Nothing too exciting happens after that.
Juliette’s nonchalant about the new addition to their household, because by this point, she’s basically spent ten years cooperatively parenting Kelly Schade-Burkhardt with Adalind Schade.  The worst she does is jibe Nick as to when she can expect to learn about the rest of his love-children.  Also, if some of the local wesen were displeased to hear about Blutbud/Fuchsbau babies, they (and not a few Grimm), were even more alarmed at the prospect of Grimm/Hexenbiest children.  Since for safety reasons, neither Juliette nor Adalind could get a regular babysitter for their kids, the whole lot of them (and the Monroe/Calvert kids, because why not) grow up between their houses.
Beyond all this, the rituals that changed Juliette into a Hexenbiest bind her close to Adalind as a sister.  She shares the Schade family magic, and she even shares some genetics with Adalind--enough to be flagged as a cousin.  Hexenbiest always raise their children with close female relatives.  As far as Diana is concerned, Juliette’s daughters are her sisters.
Sean Renard also ends up babysitting.  Partly, this is because he wants to be close to his daughter and heir, and Diana and her pseudo-siblings come as a package-deal.  But it’s also because he can see the benefits of cultivating familial loyalty to himself and his daughter among a pack of baby Grimm and Hexenbiest.  And, he supposes, the Monroe/Calvert children aren’t an unwise investment either.  Their parents certainly proved their worth many times over in a thousand small demonstrations of skill and good sense.
The only person who ends up slightly annoyed with the whole arrangement is Nick’s son Kelly.  He’s pissed because, like his father, he doesn’t Grimm up until well past the point anyone expected it to happen--long after his father and Juliette’s kids Grimm up or woge.  Poor dude.
