Hey, I have read one of your recent posts about Oscar Isaac, and I wanted to ask about the acceptance of someone who's Jewish only on their father's side. Is it that crucial?
I'm asking because my partner is Jewish, while I'm not, but we both really want our future kids to carry the Jewish culture too. Do you think they will be excluded from the community or there can be some problems like that?
I think it generally depends on the denomination and community itself. If you raise your children jewish and you're apart of the community, i think they'll be considered jewish. either way, a lot of people will consider them jewish, but some denominations won't which is why it depends. ethnically, they will always be jewish. a jew is a jew is a jew. being considered religiously jewish has its own set of rules depending on the kind of judaism you'd like to practice. i'm not super knowledgeable on a lot of technicalities, so take this with a grain of salt, but it really all just depends.

Comprehensive Biography of Yuan Yi
Yuan Yi, styled Boye (袁遺字伯業; d. Summer 193), was a civil official who was the Grand Administrator of Shanyang Commandery. He was a member of the prestigious Yuan clan of Runan. He fought against Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shu. His army eventually killed him.
Ancestry
Yuan Yi came from Ruyin, Runan. He was described as a older cousin of Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu, but Yuan Yi's pedigree was never recorded.[1][2]
His father was not recorded in history. However, his mother was known to be from the He clan of Chen; therefore, Yuan Yi's distant cousin of that side included He Kui.[2] The Bo (伯) in his style name suggests that he was the eldest son, and that he had at least some brothers.
Life
Yuan Yi was renowned for his scholarly and moral behavior. Zhang Chao of Hejian recommended him to Zhu Jun for a post, adding about Yuan Yi,
"His virtue is the best among the world; he is tolerant in governing the times. He is loyal and fair as well as brilliant and upright; this was indeed intended by Heaven. As for his innate knowledge of books, he has studied carefully the Hundreds Schools [of Thought]. He has ascended high [to gaze afar] and can recite poetry. To witness such a famous person, if you were to look at this generation, they would be far [from his ability]—incomparable!"
It was never recorded what Zhu Jun did, but he presumably recruited Yuan Yi. According to Cao Pi, Cao Cao held Yuan Yi in high esteem. Cao Cao said of him,
"Those who have matured yet still study diligently are only me and Yuan Boye, that is all."
Yuan Yi was probably fond of books, as evidenced by these quotes.[1]
He was initially Prefect of Chang'an,[1] but was later was appointed Grand Administrator of Shanyang; it is not known whether Dong Zhuo was the one who did it.[3]
Guandong Coalition
Yuan Yi joined the Guandong Coalition against Dong Zhuo along with his cousins, Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu.[3]
In the second lunar month, Dong Zhuo moved the capital from Luoyang to Chang'an. Yuan Yi and his nominal lord and fellow member, Liu Dai, stationed their armies at Suanzao alongside fellow members Qiao Mao and Zhang Miao.[4]
Death
After the disbanding of the Guandong Coalition, Yuan Yi joined Yuan Shao and presumably left his post.
Around Spring 193, Cao Cao was pushing back Yuan Shu down into Yang Province.[5] Coincidentally, the Inspector of Yang Province; Chen Wen died, allegedly either by illness or by Yuan Shu's hand. Yuan Shao soon appointed Yuan Yi as Inspector of Yang Province to fill that vacancy but while Yuan Yi was heading there, he encountered Yuan Shu's army. Yuan Shu refused to recognize Yuan Yi as Inspector, either declaring himself the Inspector or appointing his subordinate, Chen Yu, instead. Yuan Shu promptly defeated Yuan Yi.[1][6] Yuan Yi and what was remaining of his army fled back to Pei Commandery. He was soon killed by his army.[6] The reasons are unknown, but they might have resented a civil official such as Yuan Yi being involved in military affairs.
Personal info
Name: Yuan Yi
Style name: Boye[1]
Death date: Around Summer 193[5][a]

Blood Moon Sky: A Work In Progress
My gothic novel-inspired project starring Amsel and my self insert, who I’ve decided to name Vincent (even though he’s basically me). I’ve been working on this project quite a lot as of late and here’s what I have so far.
(Trigger warning: brief mentions of intergenerational trauma, dysfunctional family relationships and death in childbirth)
The novel is divided up into four parts, titled Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue.
The “Something Old” section is more like a prologue to the main narrative, as its entire purpose is to set up the lore of this fictional world, explain how vampires work and explore the lineage of the Bloodmoon family. This section also provides Amsel’s backstory, how he’s regarded as a harbinger of doom by his kin due to a prophecy stating that “the end will come” when he, the seventh son of a seventh son, is born and his subsequent exile from nearly all of his kin except for Micah, one of his brothers.
The “Something New” segment switches to Vincent’s point of view as he’s backpacking across Germany in search of the perfect material for his novel. As he travels into increasingly remote territory, he begins to hear rumours of vampires from the locals, who urge him to turn back while he still can, but he loses his bearings while in an allegedly haunted forest and encounters a pack of Strigoi, the evolutionary cousins of vampires, who are basically like bloodthirsty bat/ape monsters (think the Crawlers from The Descent).
While running for his life, Vincent hears a voice guiding him to the safety of a castle, the sight of which frightens the strigoi away. When he enters the castle, Vincent discovers the owner of the mysterious voice: Amsel. Vincent is fascinated by his rescuer, wondering how he was able to communicate telepathically. Amsel offers to let the author stay for a while until he’s ready to return to civilisation. The two become friends and this becomes a romantic relationship.
“Something Borrowed” takes things up a notch, as we see these two at their most vulnerable, not just physically, but emotionally, too. Vincent opens up about the prejudice he has faced due to being transgender. Amsel also reveals that he is a dhampir, as well as another reason why his father and most of his brothers despise him; they blame him for his mother dying in childbirth, which they take a sign of the aforementioned prophecy due to vampires being pretty much immortal. He also doesn’t understand why he’s half human, unlike his brothers.
Throughout these chapters, a lot of time passes, as Vincent and Amsel grow closer and more intimate (Vincent pretty much moves in with him). They develop a soft BDSM dynamic in which Vincent learns to trust someone else and Amsel learns to trust himself. Towards the end of this segment, Amsel plans to propose, but Vincent has to abruptly leave and return to civilisation (the reason why is still very much a work in progress). Shortly after he leaves, Amsel basically spends each night yearning for his return. When he hears a knock at the door, he rushes to see if Vincent is back, only to be greeted by none other than Micah! *cue dramatic music*
The final segment, “Something Blue”, begins with Micah, who is an accomplished scholar in vampiric history, revealing a discovery he made to Amsel after tracing their family history. It turns out that their mother wasn’t a vampire, but was actually a dhampir as well (albeit only due to distant human ancestry, but a dhampir nonetheless), which not only made her mortal (although still immortal in a biological sense) but explains why she passed away after Amsel was born.
With this revelation, along with several others, the prophecy is recontextualised: the ominous statement “The end will come”, doesn’t mean the end of the lineage, but instead the end of a curse that plagued that bloodline; the cycle of abuse. As Amsel is trying to process all of this, a currently unspecified event reveals that Saul, Amsel’s oldest brother, has captured Vincent and his holding him hostage.
Here’s where the plot gets a little fuzzy, as I haven’t fleshed it out that much yet, but in essence, Amsel and Micah come to the rescue, narrowly avoiding a sticky end at the claws of the strigoi, where Amsel finally stands up to Saul and the rest of his family, calling them out for the torment they inflicted on him as a child, how Matthias (Amsel’s father) and Saul let their grief and prejudice blind them and how they perpetuated the Bloodmoon Curse.
Most of them begin to rethink their actions, helped by Micah’s revelation of the prophecy’s true meaning, but Saul instead doubles down on his malicious mindset, revealing that he drank some of Vincent’s blood, thus initiating the painful process of transforming into a vampire. Vincent tries to escape despite his weakness, Amsel and Micah protect him and a fast-paced chase scene ensues as Saul telepathically commands the wild Strigoi to attack the heroes.
Specific events and their chronological order are currently a little unclear, but essentially, the chase takes them outside into the sunlight, which turns the Strigoi to stone, Saul is defeated (haven’t decided whether or not to let him live yet) and Vincent’s transformation seems imminent. He and Amsel have a heart to heart as they hide from the setting sun, swearing that they’ll love each other no matter what. Amsel proposes to Vincent, who accepts. They mention the phrase “till death do us part”, to which Vincent replies that they’re probably past that point. He becomes weaker as the transformation begins to play out and he and Amsel kiss.
After the sun sets, however, a blue moon rises and its enchanted light (angelic beings called Moonfolk play a part in this story too) heals Vincent and transforms him back into a human. The curse is lifted and Amsel and Vincent prepare to get married, with Micah giving them his blessing (no pun intended). The fate of the rest of the Bloodmoon family is left ambiguous, but ends on the hopeful note that the next generation, Amsel’s nephews and nieces, will break the cycle and pave the way for a more stable future.
The final chapter focuses on Amsel visiting his mother’s grave, telling her that the curse is broken and that he and Vincent are about to be married. He tells her he loves her and bids her farewell, placing a white rose on her grave, before flying off to his castle, where Vincent - his future husband - is waiting for him.
Ofc there’s other details and snippets of lore that I haven’t mentioned in this summary but that’s more or less what the plot entails and I’m very happy with how it’s turned out. Still needs to have a few plot points smoothed out and some expansion on the characters, but I think it’s not too bad at all, if I do say so myself. I’ll be working on it more in the coming months.
Also there’s a footnote revealing that Vincent and Amsel co-wrote the entire novel. Just thought it’d be a neat detail.

Okay so here is this extremely weird extremely fucked up bit of family history I found while trying to untangle my strange Appalachian family tree. I may delete this later if I feel like it provides too much information but I’d like to hear your thoughts on it. Buckle up, this one is a wild ride.
My great great great great grandfather was thought to be indigenous. He lived under the name Joseph Sparrowhawk and he was allegedly a chief. This goes beyond the stereotypical reductive claims of distant Native ancestors so many people have because of the context and evidence. My great great great grandmother Sarah was white. They met around 1810 and had 9+ children together but the law would not allow them to marry. Sometime around 1840, he was forcibly removed from Appalachia and sent to Oklahoma via the Trail of Tears. Sarah could not support the children and they ended up going to different homes. She died in 1859 at 66, never having any recorded legal marriages. He died in 1868 at the age of 86 in what would become Oklahoma.
Those 9 children had many children of their own and I’m somehow related to much of the population of western Virginia, West Virginia and western North Carolina. The problem is, none of my extended family has any DNA markers indicating any indigenous ancestors. The DNA inclusion would be in the last 200 years so it should indicate a 1% ancestry. Nobody has that. I can’t find anyone in any of the branches of the family who does, none of their descendants. Looking into it further, I can’t find any evidence a man named Joseph Sparrowhawk actually existed. He only appears in family trees and family journals, there are no photographs of him, just one drawing.
This raises so many questions that there may never be answers for. First hand accounts indicate that yes, Sarah was in a domestic partnership for 30 years with a man who claimed to be Cherokee and lived under the name Joseph Sparrowhawk and he was the father of her 9 children. Her children were legally listed as several different races despite having the same father, some were listed as Black, some as white and others as having mixed ancestors. DNA tests indicate that yes, most of us have some very distant African American ancestors but we cannot be sure where the DNA came from.
So, was Joseph Sparrowhawk Black or partially Black and faking his race to avoid anti-Black racism? Was Joseph Sparrowhawk the alias of a white man pretending to be indigenous as an excuse not to marry Sarah, did he simply abandon the family and leave for Oklahoma on his own volition? Is it possible Joseph Sparrowhawk did exist and was indigenous but was not the father of Sarah’s children? Or, and perhaps strangest of all, is it possible he never existed and that Sarah pretended she had a partner to excuse the fact all of her children had different biological fathers? The implication that Sarah was not mentally sound is something that comes up a lot. She was known to be “free spirited” and she was a psychic by trade.
We cannot know for sure if Joseph Sparrowhawk genuinely existed and if he did exist, was he living under an alias and a fraudulent identity? This happened in the early 19th century and it’s likely we’ll never truly get answers. It’s so mysterious and the implications are all so disheartening. I wish I could say this was the first strange weird find in my journey to untangle my huge messy Appalachian family but it’s not.

Pro-Choice Author: Solving Cold Case of Infanticide Presents "Slippery Slope"
I recently read a book for pleasure that I thought would be unrelated to abortion, and found myself with content for the Secular Pro-Life blog. (This keeps happening to me!) Allow me to introduce The Lost Family: How DNA Testing Is Upending Who We Are by Libby Copeland (2020). As the title suggests, The Lost Family is primarily concerned with family secrets that come to light thanks to consumer DNA testing services like Ancestry and 23andme, and the emotional impact of those surprises — including for extended relatives who never submitted DNA samples and receive shocking revelations out of the blue. It is certainly a worthy topic, and Copeland does an admirable job combining personal narratives with scientific explanations that make sense to lay readers. Copeland also discusses the new frontier of forensic geneaology, which uses familial DNA connections to identify human remains and solve violent crimes. The growing number of DNA profiles collected through consumer DNA testing services has proven to be a valuable tool for law enforcement, most visibly in the Golden State Killer case. Although no one doubts that getting killers off the street is a good thing, policymakers and ethicists have concerns about informed consent; after all, people who get a 23andme kit for Christmas are probably not thinking about the possibility that their DNA might be used to incarcerate a distant relative. I'm sorry, did I say no one doubts that getting killers off the street is a good thing? Turns out that depends on the age of the victim, as this disturbing, euphemism-filled passage describes: Thomas Murray, the Hastings Center president emeritus, told me he supported the use of genetic geneaology "to prevent the most extreme sorts of harms," so long as there are "good guardrails" in place to make sure police don't use these tactics for lesser crimes. . . . And yet, not long after I spoke to Murray, news outlets reported on the use of genetic geneaology leading to the arrest of a South Dakota woman "charged with murder for allegedly leaving her newborn in a ditch thirty-eight years ago." Several genetic geneaologists expressed concern about a slippery slope, about the kinds of crime this powerful new technology was being used for, and about the implications of such cases for women's reproductive and bodily autonomy. Let's break that down. By "women's reproductive and bodily autonomy," Copeland (who is pro-choice) of course means abortion. Her implication that leaving a helpless newborn in a ditch to die is a "lesser crime" echoes the notion that infanticide is merely a fourth-trimester abortion and should not be penalized. And where Copeland recognizes a "slippery slope," pro-life advocates should recognize welcome scientific progress. Science proves that human beings in the womb are living individuals. Once the right to life is restored, scientific advances can provide an avenue for justice when those individuals are victims of violence. Enter the Black Siblings!
This is like, a rough sketch of the main characters that I created for my thingy, idk.
Okay, this totally ignores the fact that Regulus literally DIED when he was still in his Hogwarts years as a Death Eater, but they are Regulus’s children. In an AU where Regulus survived the cave’s deadly traps and was able to run away to France. He married a pure-blood witch in France, Elodie Levefre. Regulus was, suspected to be dead, thus the possibility of him having two children.
Background: Regulus Black II was born on 1961 and allegedly died in 1979 (18 years). After his escape from England and into France, he never abandoned his identity (plot hole lol I just want to keep the Black name intact) because at that time Voldemort was not an imminent threat to other countries and he does not have a lot of followers in France. When Voldemort ‘died’ in 1981, Regulus was 20, WITH TWO CHILDREN LOL. Anyways.
Their home in Paris is at the 7Th - Faubourg Saint-Germain Paris, Il, 75007 France. Same tactic used in the 12th Grimmauld Place, it’s invisible to Muggles. (Reference: https://www.sothebysrealty.com/eng/sales/detail/180-l-85031-zl2tsv/exceptional-private-mansion-in-paris-7th-faubourg-saint-germain-paris-il-75007) I saw this property and was IMMEDIATELY like yes, this is definitely somewhere I can see them living in.
Cassiopeia Black; the first child out of the three Black siblings.
Cassiopeia is a very ambitious, narcissistic, intelligent lady. Named after the The Queen Constellation, Cassiopeia’s personalities fit her name very well.
She has a strong leadership spirit and is not afraid to speak her opinions. Cassiopeia is blessed with fair skin, blonde hair and the classic Black eyes.
Her patronus is a Black Swan.
She is actually Sirius Black’s daughter, that was taken care under Regulus as Sirius had to go to Azkaban.
Cassiopeia was born on 15 March, 1978 (Aries) , with a fling Sirius had with a Veela. She knows the truth about her biological father, but she loves her family nevertheless.
Very fluent in French, and she almost went to Beauxbatons but she insisted on going to Hogwarts as she wanted to go to the same school as her father (this works because UK citizenship can get passed on to a child that was born to a British parent).
Sorted into Slytherin.
She won’t hesitate to use any means to achieve her goals, even if it does include facilitating her Veela powers (which, let’s make it immoral).
Cassiopeia’s dream is to become a professor in her favorite subject, Herbology. She has an aptitude for floras and has her own mini garden in her own room back in France. Her favorite plant is the Venomous Tentacula because of its reputation and fear it spreads amongst people due to its aggressiveness.
The only sibling that is not in a Quidditch team, but a fan of the sport nevertheless. She doesn’t go to matches if it’s Slytherin vs. Ravenclaws though.
Carina Black; the second child out of the three Black siblings.
Carina is a calm, and although she thinks of herself as an introvert, she tries hard to be social with other people because she knows that connection will be very useful in the future. She’s very ambitious and she’s not afraid to use any means necessary to reach her goal— which is to be the youngest Minister for Magic.
Born on the 25th December of 1979 (Capricorn), she enters Hogwarts at the same year as Harry’s. The Sorting Hat has a hard time on deciding whether or not she should be in Slytherin or Hufflepuff, but due to her being proud of her Black ancestry, she chose Slytherin.
She does not agree with most of the family values such as the pure-blood mania, however, she is still proud of being from the most ancient and noble House of Black. She never once got ashamed of being from the House of Black.
Her patronus is a Dragon.
She is Regulus’s first child, and although she may not be the oldest in the three siblings, she is still protective over all of them and have a tendency to take leadership positions. This results in fights breaking out between her and Cassiopeia.
Carina is blessed with the whole Black family trait, something that she is very much proud of.
She can speak English, French, Italian and German, and she loves traveling.
She plays Quidditch on the Slytherin team as their Beater.
Corvus Black; the third child out of the three Black siblings.
Corvus Black was born a year after Carina, on 16th of September 1980 (Virgo). Corvus is also blessed with the Black family traits, minus his golden eyes, that he got from his mother.
He is the only sibling that is not sorted into Slytherin, as he was put in Ravenclaw after a long deliberation (5 minutes). Knowing the Black family history and disagreeing with its values, he is quite ashamed of his heritage and thus chose Ravenclaw.
He dreams of being a journalist and writing his own book someday, although he’s still not sure what the book will be about.
His patronus is a Magpie.
He is very a very curious individual, and his room back in France can be called a library more than a bedroom. His favorite book is History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot, and he would read the book every month despite knowing all the lines by heart.
He is also a fan of Quidditch and plays for the Ravenclaw team as their Keeper.
Corvus is less assertive than two of his sisters, which may be an effect of growing up with both of them bickering with each other all the time. He would rather spend all of his time indoors cooped up with his books or play Quidditch.
Fluent in English, French, Italian, German, Greek, Latin, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. A super duper smart guy basically.
My story follows on Carina Black, and follows the HP timeline. The siblings come back to France every holiday, and despite the whole school knowing their name starts with Black, everyone just assumes they’re very distant family members of the Black family who branched out to France. Draco, hearing this, tells Narcissa on this information. Narcissa knows that Regulus is still alive, but doesn’t say anything as she loves him dearly and wishes for him to be safe from the Death Eaters.
Like for real, this is basically fanfiction at this point but I’m just writing this so I can go through Harry’s journey all over again as a character inside the universe. This is kinda my first time writing so it’s obviously going to be a mess.
