when u tell someone who hasn’t had to apply for a job in a while “the interview process is like 6 weeks atp” they don’t believe you but a lot of employers will wait like 2 weeks to follow up, and they always need to do multiple rounds of interviews which takes a week for each round, and then there’s two more weeks of dead silence before you hear back. sometimes you’ll apply for something in january and they will call you up in the summer like “hey you still want the job” it’s crazy. they’re out here putting desk clerks through two phone interviews and two in persons at two different locations. they make the pages interview TWICE and they also have to do TWO sorting tests!! that job pays well below minimum wage, it’s a job meant for retirees and high school students why do you interview them like it requires a mlis

For those who don’t spend all their time on TikTok like I do, ‘beekeeping age’ refers to an attractive older man, usually in 40s/50s. Some of these guys technically don’t apply but we’re putting them in anyway!

Age: 31

Yes, he’s only in his thirties, but Aizawa has the vibe of a retiree. He looks like someone who should be muttering “I’m too old for this shit” at any minor inconvenience. In fact, he often does. He’s said it several times today. 

Most especially when you looked over at him and told him that he looks like he’s ‘beekeeping age’. Now, as a teacher, Aizawa isn’t as out of step with popular culture as he might like you to think he is. Even if he doesn’t really bother with social media himself, he has twenty students who are all hooked to their phones like it’s a dialysis machine. He picks stuff up just by proximity, and it’s not the first time he’s heard the phrase ‘beekeeping age’. And while he might have a vague idea of what it means, he’s not just going to let you get away with calling him that. 

He looks straight at you, lifts an eyebrow and asks, “What does that mean?”

Which leaves you floundering a little, because you have to explain to Aizawa that it means you think of him as an attractive ‘older’ man. 

While he’s the furthest thing from vain, he finds himself a little bit offended.

“What the hell do you mean ‘older’? I’m thirty-one.”

“You have to admit, Shouta, you do give off the vibe of a grizzled older man.”

“I’m too old for this shit.”

Yagi Toshinori/All Might

Age: 55+

Toshinori’s the only one who really qualifies for this trope, and naturally, he has absolutely no idea what you’re referring to when you tell him that he’s beekeeping age. He grins uncertainly at you.

“I’m…not sure if that’s a compliment or not, but I’ve always thought that beekeeping looks like a relaxing hobby! As long as you’re not allergic!”

Of course, you take a little pity on him and explain that it means he’s a hot older guy. 

“Oh, are you referring to a DILF?”

Once you’re done spraying your coffee or whatever you were drinking everywhere, you demand to know where Toshinori heard that word and if he knows what it means. Let’s be real, Toshinori doesn’t run his own social media and doesn’t know squat about memes.

“Oh, a charming young lady walked up to me at a signing once and informed me I am what the young people call a DILF. Still can’t get anyone to tell me what it means! Slang these days! Ha!”

I dare you to try and get Toshinori to refer to himself as a DILF in front of Aizawa. Just for the hell of it. 

Maijima Higari/Power Loader

Age: 41

Higari can’t catch a break. Not only is he very short and look a couple decades younger than he actually is, leading to a lot of unfortunate misunderstandings, now he has some whippersnapper calling telling him to go start a beehive. 

He’s probably the only one on this list that actually knows what it means. I feel like because he’s so in line with cutting edge technology that he’s pretty on top of social media as well? He doesn’t seem like the type to lose step with the rest of the world when it comes to these things. So you don’t even have to explain what you mean when you tell him he’s beekeeping age. 

“Buzz off.” 

Sasaki Mirai/Sir Nighteye

Age: 38 

At first Sir Nighteye thinks you’re making some kind of joke. He stares you down, looking rather menacing even while his mind is turning over the phrase ‘beekeeping age’, looking for the pun or the play on words. When he can’t find it, he finally has to admit defeat and ask you gravely: 

“What does that mean?”

Sir Nighteye’s a little put out when you tell him it’s about good looking older men, because he doesn’t consider himself particularly old. Pacify him by telling him that he just gives off the dignified air of a mature man. He might scoff, but he’ll be somewhat more mollified. 

“I suppose I can accept that as a compliment. Although I think you ought to come up with better jokes. That one didn’t even contain a pun.”

I like to go to model train conventions because normally you'll have like, $400 streamlined super rare locomotives that are in perfect condition that some 70 year old retiree will go nuts for seeing that run in his 1-1 recreation of his Nebraskan suburbs. And while that's the bread and butter of this kind of hobby there's always some old little toy train that's a bit chipped and is missing a footladder or was painted by a 90 old year retiree and thus has gotten the Union Pacific colors wrong or something and doesn't run and a sticker indicating that it's Fucked Up And Thus Pathetic and goes for maybe about five halves of a penny and listening to them talk about if 3D printed ballast spreaders are any good (spoilers: they work but ballast is a pain in the ass).

And I like to take those poor tiny things and give them a nice little home. "Oh it doesn't run right" says the guy with a train hat gussied up with more pins than a yaoi fangirl's convention tote. Doesn't matter to me. I put them up on a shelf of honor and string them up alongside little LEDs so I can have something nice to look at. Sometimes being wanted isn't about what you're originally expected to be.

kuya: wanders the marketplace, and often sees those anti-aging creams with LOFTY claims to their power... he always mocks them and insults the intelligence of all the vain people clamouring to buy the stock. later that day you will see kuya at home, trying those very same creams (procured illegally, of course, because why pay for anything ever) and pretending like he's zero percent interested in the results

rei: in the same situation will just as quickly mock the creams but unlike kuya he'll mean it and will NOT be caught applying the gloop all over his face later. "lmao it's just sunscreen who even believes this shit"

yakumo: i like to give him sneczema sometimes. i know it's implied that everyone in gay gacha has perfect skin forever *waves hand dismissively* BUT

imagine that he loves working with his hands but the sneczema can flare up if he's too rough on em, so he compromises by wearing his gloves. protect that vulnerable skin, yaku!! [insert pun about scaly skin]

His SR clothing material seems soft. Aesthetic reason: slippery smooth like the idea of snek. Practical reason: coarse textures can aggravate skin 😔 only the silkiest coverings for a scaly boy...

i mean. yaku prefers the wet cave environment so we gotta keep an eye on his humidity. too dry and he'l'l turn into a wafer (like in Solaria that One Time)

Some ideas about Paul's family:

Option 1: Jon Matteson Fmily Tree - full-transparency, the Jon Matteson family tree has never really been my personal favorite, or at the very least, the idea of Paul specifically having a big chaotic extended family has never felt very "Paul" to me. Paul has always struck me as such a solitary entity in Hatchetfield, or at least until Emma shows up. That being said, I won't deny that the idea is fun. That being said, I think if we're gonna go with the whole Paul is Richie's uncle thing, I don't think he's literally the brother of one of Richie's parents. I think "uncle" in this case is used in the general way a kid refers to an adult relative, and he's more of a distant cousin. I don't really know how to explain it, but I simply cannot picture Paul with siblings. Overall though, to me, I think I prefer the idea of Gary and Boy Jerry being Richie's uncles, and Paul is just kinda separate.

Option 2: Generic Retirees - I've mentioned this in another post, but something about Paul having no relatives in Hatchetfield even though he's lived there his whole life there feels very "Paul" to me. I suppose you could conclude from this that his parents are dead, but seeing as he's only in his early 30s and that implies his parents probably died kind of young (probably somewhere in the 50s-70s range depending on how old they were when Paul was born and when they died), I like the idea instead that the explanation is the most boring one possible; they retired in Florida. Their names are Arthur and Martha Matthews, or something similarly generic. They are the most boring 60 year old couple imaginable. Arthur likes to garden. Martha likes bird watching. They have no other hobbies. They visit Paul a couple times a year. They are constantly trying to convince Paul to move to Florida. They are the Matthews family. They are boring.

Option 3: Crack Theory Time - This is insane, and I don't really believe this theory, but the idea came to me one day and I the thought wouldn't leave my head, so I need to share it. So the idea behind this is Paul is such a singular entity that it's almost enigmatic, or at least it would be if anyone cared that much. Paul never talks about his family to anyone. He never really thinks about his family, and he feels like he's been on his own for a long time. That's not to say he doesn't remember having a family. He had a mom. She was nice. It was a shame she passed away 15 years ago. And when he starts dating Emma and she asks about his family, that's all he has to say. "I had a mom. She was nice. It was a shame she passed away 15 years ago." He remembers having a mother, but he doesn't really remember anything that specific about her. He's not sure why. He never thinks too deeply about it. He's not sure he can properly recall her face unless he's looking at an old scrapbook. It's strange, though. As soon as he puts the scrapbook back on the shelf, it's like he forgets again. All that really sticks is he had a mom. She was nice. It's a shame she passed away 15 years ago. It's not like he didn't love her, of course he did, she was his mom. And she was a good mom too, he's sure of it. One thing he does remember though, is before she died, she had a long talk with him. He can't remember about what exactly, but he knows it was important. He's pretty sure she was saying goodbye. If you've watched nightmare time, you may have guessed where I'm going with this. I don't really know where this idea of mine that Miss Holloway is Paul's mom came from, it just kind of seemed like Paul being a mysteriously solo entity in Hatchetfield makes sense, and this seemed like an interesting explanation. It also would tie into the fact that Paul might have a slight latent resistance to the LiBs. In tgwdlm, Paul has a whole musical number where he resists the Hive while being infected, while the only other times anyone gets infected on stage, it's a matter of seconds. Paul is also one of the only adult characters who sees through Tickle-Me-Wiggly; even Emma thinks Tim would want a Wiggly "more than anything." Do I think this is all some insane foreshadowing? Absolutely not. This seems extremely unlikely to me, and a product of my own over-thinking, but it sure is fun to think about anyway. (Also, I've never seen anything about this online before, but if this is an existing fan theory, please let me know. The Miss Matthews theory, if you will)

Option 4: He Doesn't Have One - Paul does not have a family. He is just Paul. It's not important for Paul to have a family because they are not relevant, and therefore, they simply do not exist. This also seems very possible to me, and tbh feels appropriate, both for Paul, and for Hatchetfield. I mean heck, according to Curt Mega his shopper character in Black Friday is literally named "Shopper No. 4". Paul just straight up not having a family because he's Just A Guy™️ feels right.

i'm so mad about the illiberal rightward swing in certain states recently specifically because florida and texas are inherently fun places to visit if you don't go to the tourist traps. they're actually great despite the fact that they suck. but Unfortunately some people have decided that fascist bioessentialism is awesome so you can't go see cone shells (from a safe distance), miles of sand dunes, and the biggest magnet lab in the world, OR big bend national park, wild mustangs, and really questionable outfits. they are fundamentally interesting places (having lived in both). but a lot of texas used to be like king of the hill! florida used to be full of retirees and crackpots of all political stripes and hobbies! and now it isn't really possible to live like that.

of course, states like missouri and co. are having an awful time too, but florida and texas being so culturally unique (oklahoma and georgia, for example, are culturally very different) means that there's a huge cultural panorama that enormous swathes of people are not gonna be able to experience for decades, if not longer. and i think that's just sad.

This is my dear friend Henry. He is an old man but he still likes playing with the wand toy and running around the house. He is scared of everyone and everything and would love nothing more than for me to stay in bed all day so he can sit next to me. He likes looking out the window, yelling into the void, and crunchy food.

And this young lady is Calamity Jane. She was born with an eye condition, and had surgery to remove them, so she is blind. It doesn't matter to her; she sprints around the house, climbs up on things, and finds all the snacks just fine. If she doesn't get mandatory cuddle time everyday, you will hear about it. Her favorite activities are playing with the crinkleball, looking out the window, and crying in the hallway because she is pretending she doesn't know how doors work.

Henry is a retiree who lives on a quiet little island in a quiet little town. A quaint fixture, reclusive but kind -- even helpful sometimes -- he used to be an accountant, and a good one, and now does friends' tax returns for free. While elderly, he stays active by going for walks on his property and digging in his little garden where he grows his little vegetables. Or giant ones. He's one of those old guys who grows an enormous turnip and then poses with it for his grandkids to post on Facebook, from where it goes viral. His manner of dress is eccentric, his facial hair is very charismatic, and he has a jolly laugh. He yells at seagulls.

Calamity Jane has many active hobbies that keep her busy -- hiking, jogging, climbing. She also enjoys reading while sitting outside, where neighbors sometimes come to visit. Her actual job is as a social worker, helping people remove obstacles to their well-being, whether those are difficulties accessing mental health care, affordable food and housing, or LITERAL DOORS, HOW COULD YOU. She is an outspoken advocate for social justice and societal change. Why doesn't everyone have equal access to food, water, crinkle balls, and cuddle time?! She is fiery and joyful, and has the best underbelly ever known to humankind.

hi! i'm mill and i'm a whump writer. i've been writing since march of last year, and this is my second year participating in WIJ!

my writing masterlist is here! the main thing to check out is my main series, Kane & Jim, about a vampire whumper-turned-whumpee whose former victim takes care of him after he's tortured by vampire hunters.

i really like nonhuman whumpees (especially vampire whumpees). for this event, i will be devoting 5 of the writing prompts to my main series, and the others will apply to 5 whumpees of varied species: a borrower (tiny whump), a vampire unrelated to my main series, a fairy, an alien, and an immortal.

i also have a g/t (giant/tiny) sideblog @smallsday, where i blog about characters with size differences. there is a g/t event going on this july too, GT July, and while i won't be completing GT July like i will with WIJ, i'm going to combine a few prompts and some of my WIJ pieces will also function as GTJ entries. yay for tiny whump!

I played Academic Games for most of my academic career and finally won a first-place trophy in Propaganda in my final year at Nationals (Hilariously, one of the games I used to hate). I was also part of a pickup team that challenged the reigning champions in 3 of our 4 games. I can make a lot of our regular meals without having to refer to recipes much. I am actually a strong swimmer. As much as I love series, I find it's easier to share a movie with a friend, and I love my friends! It's why I got a huge sectional! So many of my friends don't live near me, so I travel a lot now.

I've had many an old friend, though! I have lots of best friends of more than 10 years! My parents are still going strong at 36 years and are having the best time as retirees. I've dated a best friend; it didn't work. I give advice to friends, but it's usually because they ask. I am mostly made of online friends, and I even met some last week!

It’s time for some quilt posting!

I visited my family in Alberta last week and was determined to spend some quality time not sweating my ass about my inbox. (Being on satellite internet helped a lot.) And come hell or high water I was going to finish something.

I set out to finish handquilting the giant beast I have— thinking I would just post up on the back porch and stare at the ground squirrels while working— but that was not in the cards. Because my mother has been learning to quilt as well.

You see, my mom has been learning quilting in fits and starts over the years. A table runner here, a rag quilt there, but not really a focused effort beyond making someone a gift or destashing the mountain of polar fleece she has on hand from making us kids clothes in the nineties and early aughts.

It wasn’t until my severely burnt out and depressed self came home for Christmas this past year and asked her to teach me to quilt that she also decided to learn conventional piecing quilting. She wasn’t able to teach me, but she shared her craftsy login with me and we stared down a bunch of YouTube videos together. She also drove me through the icy Alberta freeze to the quilt shop in Canmore and gave me two sizeable lengths of fabric she’d taken in from my Oma to bind and back the Frankie and Momo quilt I made in January.

Since then, she’s been motoring along on quilting projects and gifts at the rate that could only be maintained by a retiree determined to destash her, my grandmother and my oma’s lifetimes of built up fabrics. My mom, also being one of the rare people in this world with an honest-to-god pension, learns any new hobby by buying gadgets and toys for the hobby.

This is all to say: My mom has an accuquilt. This is a little crank power fabric die-cutting machine that is very very cool. And after using it to zoom through the cutting for a little sawtooth star block I got it in my head that I could probably do a simple start-to-finish quilt while I was visiting. (I wanted to play with the toy more)

(Yes I know that this is very silly and wiggly, but I was testing things and goofing around so be nice)

So it was off to that Canmore quilt shop again, in much nicer weather. And I dug out some coordinating colours from their sale section for blocks, backing and binding for less than thirty bucks. I then fed all the twoonie priced fat quarters through the diecutter and wound up with more than sixty charm squares in about half an hour.

That’s pretty fast— all my cutting at home happens on a coffee table and wrecks my back. She’s also got one of those fancy Stripology rulers so I was able to cut my entire binding in literal seconds. It’s witchcraft.

Put together a simple repeating layout and we were off to the races!

My mother also has a fancy new sewing machine with a start-stop button, thread cutter and more feed dogs than god. So I was able to zip through assembly WAY faster than on my ancient hand-me-down brother machine from the eighties. (Who I still love)

The whole quilt top was together before I knew it, and I’m getting less and less clumsy with my corners every time I do this so I was really happy. Used a Hera marker to make guides for the quilting, which surprised me by how well it held up to handling. I can probably recreate the effect with a clean butter knife at home!

Quilted the whole thing in rush and sewed the binding on in the car on our way to and from dinner. I somehow managed to not get carsick doing it too, it’s astounding. Im really happy with the results even though it’s a very simple design. This is the fastest I’ve done a whole little blanket like this and I’m glad I got so lucky with the sale fabrics available.

(Lucy also gave her approval once we got home yesterday, even though she wasn’t there to supervise.)

Her mother Esmanur was her direct descendant and her father was a famed businessman who travelled often. An old love of John had returned and, after much deliberating, decided to end the relationship. It ended amicably and, after healing from the heartbreak (she had been used to him being there) they became good friends and, though Shreya never knew Theo’s secret, came to like him and understand why John loved him.

Shreya and Kevin went to the same year and had similar ambitions, making them good friends. They had a special connection, though Shreya was caught up in her crush with John, thus never saw Kevin, but from time to time, she’d have heart flutters when he smiled at her.
