A follow-up to Hollywood Candid showcases 145 images of stars taken during intimate or irreverent moments, in a volume containing many never-before-seen photos and complemented by personal reminiscences.

he pathos of Old Hollywood emerges in this dazzling collection of black-and-white photos from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Celebrity photojournalist Garrett captured his subjects at nightclubs, industry soirées and parties-an in-between world where stars tried to enjoy their private lives while still very much on public display. Garrett maintained a studied reserve toward the celebrities (he made a point of never addressing them by their first names) and his photos have a appealing mixture of intimacy and detachment as the celebrities drink, laugh and carouse while tricked out in formal wear and immaculate hair-dos. He is especially fascinated with Hollywood divas like Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Leslie Caron and Ava Gardner; his photos show the warmth of these vibrant personalities while hinting at the strain they suffered in maintaining their glamorous facades. The photos are accompanied by piquant reminiscences: of the wise-cracking Zsa-zsa Gabor shoving her way into every picture frame, the lovable Jimmy Durante shoving his way into oncoming traffic, and the thuggish Milton Berle shoving hapless underlings out of his dressing room. In one tense picture worth a thousand words, a vampy Lauren Bacall embraces Van Heflin while her husband, Humphrey Bogart, looks on ("I heard Bogey say, in a chilled tone, 'Van, that's close enough'"). In these lively, unlacquered but sympathetic portraits, celebrities emerge as flawed, human and never entirely free of self-consciousness.

Y'know, I think you and a lot of people mistake House for being homophobic, racist, sexist, and transphobic (maybe a little more credit to that one, but if the show was being made in more modern day we might see otherwise). None of them remotely realize,

He's being edgy.

He's purposefully getting a rise out of people because he likes getting people angry at him.

If you listen to what he says when he ACTUALLY means what he's saying, he's actually progressive, especially for the time. He calls the HIV guy's dad a bigot because he thought he hated his son for being gay. He told the football player "you won't need to play sports now to get a good career" when his skin started to discolor to white. He literally said "white, skinny, pretty people make all the rules in society" at one point. All of his actions prove that he believes women are just as capable as men are, if not more so in some cases, especially with Thirteen and Amber. He's FIERCLEY pro choice and doesn't even try to hide it or pretend otherwise.

And while he definitely has some pretty terrible stuff going on with intersex/trans people, the show frames him in a bad way for doing so.

House is a horrendous person in a lot of ways, but he's not ACTUALLY a bigot. He just likes to pretend to be because he hates it when people like him and tries to push them away.

i watched the new live action atla show with some college friends and lads it's so bad. they made several transparent changes to make the characters "more sympathetic" except it completely removed all conflict and flattened half the cast! sokka wasn't allowed to express outright, clearly-signposted-as-bad sexism and yet this version of the show is MORE SEXIST than the cartoon!

#it is babyish and embarrassing. #katara wasn't allowed to get mad @ sokka bc yelling is for boys. katara didn't steal a scroll bc she can't b unsympathetic & needs protected #sokka has to be a buff warrior and not be rude to suki so it's a hollywood two straight people stand next to each other moment.

went back and listened to the episodes on david bokovoy's personal experience with religion, and man, it's funny just how different the stuff that people twig on in their experience of faith is--for bokovoy, even as a scholar of biblical criticism, it really isn't the truth claims of the LDS church that were ever a problem for him. like his academic career definitely primed him to move from a more orthodox, small-c conservative theology to a more expansive one (and he remains a pretty spiritual guy in general from the sound of it), but the thing that really started to fuck him up was the church's insistence on beating the anti-gay-marriage drum, starting with proposition 8, and culminating in the 2015 declaration about the children of gay parents not being welcome in the church unless they denounced them.

and it's a little infuriating to listen to him talk about how he feels about the LDS church after all of that--this whole "the leadership are good people deep down, i just disagree with them on this." like, come on, dude. i get that you're a straight guy whose experiences with mormonism have been generally very positive, but you are also self-aware enough to talk with compassion about LGBT people, about the experience of having a gay daughter, about the way in which people raised in Mormonism who are gay or even just a little bit nonconformist in some aspect of their life can have a really brutal time of it, and yet you cling to this idea of the organization as having some noble core, some inherently good quality that is only failing in its ultimate expression. he even talks about the experience of watching a movie that dramatizes the way different faith leaders came together during the civil rights movement, and having a moment of acute discomfort remembering that at the same time the leadership of the LDS church was still racist as hell in its teachings and policy

like, you should not be afraid to admit that the LDS church fucking sucks! it's always fucking sucked! most organized religion fucking sucks, and the organized religion that doesn't fucking suck has mostly gotten there by virtue of progressives splintering off and forming organizations that retain only a general flavor of the awful bullshit they grew up with and none of the core dogmas. i don't know of a human organization from the beginning of time that rigidly patrols boundaries of identity politics and creates structures of authority based on spirituality that didn't rapidly collapse into tyranny, a grift, or both, except the ones that were already that from the beginning.

and this, i suppose, is my disappointment with even the very open-minded progressives that John Dehlin interviews, which is that they want to redeem an organization that i think is fundamentally unredeemable. no particular shade to mormonism here--I think the Catholic church is also fundamentally unredeemable. hell, if i knew more about tibetan buddhism, i'd probably think that whole hierarchy was fundamentally unredeemable as well. the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints cannot become progressive on LGBT issues and honestly pursue truth and cease to misrepresent its history and spend its money on helping the poor and needy instead of conservative political campaigns and exploiting eighteen year olds to do morally questionable missionary work in third world countries without ceasing to be the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and its leadership knows this. for the exact same reason the Roman Catholic church can't go "lol you know what, our bad, this Pope guy isn't all that he's cracked up to be" and remain the Roman Catholic church.

i mean ultimately bokovoy doesn't go to church anymore; he says that the 2015 declaration was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back, and even if it was revoked tomorrow, it's not like he'd start going back. i assume he's not tithing anymore either. and he seems like a generally very gentle soul who wants to see the best in people, and i don't want to get on his case too much about that, because i admire that. but man, i think it's kind of disappointing to watch someone as apparently smart and compassionate as he is work himself into knots to excuse the behavior of the leadership of an organization like that when the simplest explanation is just that these people are assholes on a fundamental level and always have been.

And I'd like to officially say that the claims were wrong! I did not cry at specific moments, thank you very much. ...I cried at ALL THE MOMENTS, from the first seven minutes with Luis until a little after the "is it Thursday yet?" of episode four. I am absolutely dehydrated and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I just love how carefree mulder and scully are in david’s episodes, it’s a side of them we so rarely got to see… 😔😔😔

yeah, me too. david writes journeys for mulder, with clear morals and arcs. the unnatural is about valuing “life on this planet,” finding space for joy and connection in the midst of blinding pursuit. amor fati is about commitment to your purpose, realigning to who you are at the core, who you were as a child. the promises that you made to yourself then. hollywood a.d. is about legacy, what we leave behind: does it matter if it’s warped, or if it’s nothing, so long as we loved and were loved well?

david’s episodes are classic hero’s journeys, active lessons for mulder as a character. but these are all things that scully already knows, so she gets to be passive and lighthearted and wise. they aren’t having anything beaten into them; they’re growing through storytelling, through play, through identification. they’re growing through watching a movie at 3am and rambling to each other. they’re growing through eating gross fake ice cream and reading old newspapers on a saturday morning. they’re growing through swinging a baseball bat, hips before hands, all night under the stars.

#this is why i love his dancing zombies at the end of ‘hollywood a.d.’ so SO much #mulder sitting out on the grass spiralling about how the dead are thought of and spoken about and the things that impact legacy and memory #things that are so deeply important to a man who spends his life chasing ghosts. who lost 2 family members that year #and scully is just next to him giggling and holding his arm like…they’re dead mulder! they don’t care! #eyes lit up waving that bureau credit card at him #and the way he’s just like….sigh. okay. #and gives it up and takes her arm so they can go out #when the music starts playing and you can still see mulder and scully holding hands in the background #and the zombies all get up and dance <33 #one of my favorite moments of the show. they’re happy. and that’s something. #and that’s what i love about david’s eps because who gives a fuck where the zombies came from! #who gives a fuck if the baseball player was really an alien! who gives a fuck who the boy on the beach was! #it doesn’t matter. it’s so metaphorical and just there for the lesson. and the lesson is always loving and beneficial for the characters #asks
